He has not; the cutscene you're thinking of is one where he comments on her mask, and she makes a big deal about not wanting to show her face for fear of negative reaction. So much for that I guess!

We as players know they are a draconic humanoid race because we have been outright told as such. The NPCs in game though quite possibly wouldn't automatically come to the same conclusion. Reptilian features to be sure but horns and scales hardly make you a dragon and the Au Ra are clearly not native. There are any number of races with animal features and except for glamour or complete transformations we haven't seen any humanoid dragons among the Dravanians.
My personal suspicion is that playable Au Ra are refugees from Othard. Yugiri did say that there were other ships apart from her own probably still out at sea. Have a few boat loads of Au Ra arrive and suddenly we have an Au Ra population on Eorzea.
Lore tidbit hidden in the LL thread:

I still wish I understood why they're playing Au Ra information so close to the chest. We're two and a half months from release, dudes! It's time to lay everything on the table! These people need to be introduced so they fit into the world!
We also got a couple Au Ra pictures with the new gear sets shown in the Live Letter:

I guess I was right in thinking that one clan (where yugiri comes from) is more social and thus more, while another clan lives on the fringes of society/ more isolated.
I wonder how the Xaela naming will be? Seems like they'll atleast use more atypical letters like X

Q1: Could you please tell us the naming conventions for the Au Ra?
A1: There are two clans: Au Ra Raen and Au Ra Xaela. Au Ra Raen have been closely related to the Domans for long time, so their names are somewhat Japanese-like. The Xaela on the other hand have led a nomadic lifestyle for some time, and they have a unique naming convention.
That interests me as well. We already learned from Roegardyn than there can be drastic differences between two subraces. One is adjective everyday object, the other is keyboard headbut. For some reason I imagine Xaela to use similar names to mi'qote, but with a lot of X mixed in. Maybe X and Q. Yeah Xaela are probably chinese mi'qote.
Speaking of which. How are they pronounced? Zaela? Ksaela? Sheaela?
Love that caster set in general.
Also worth pointing out: that's a new horn style for the ladies in that picture! Those appear to be fin-like horns. So that's yet another horn type.
I would presume "Zaela", knowing the way it's probably spelled in katakana. We'll need to wait for the actual katakana to know for sure, though.
I'm not sure on that front; it's impossible to say at this point because we know so little about them. I was certain the dark-scaled ones would be Dravanians, but now it's all completely up the air, especially with the revelation that they're "nomadic". So not just the names, but everything about their lore is currently up in the air.
(Ironically, paying attention thoughout 2.x, we actually have a pretty decent picture of Au Ra Raen society - they seem to have occupied generally higher tiers of society in Doma and were particularly a significant part of the Doman military, and may have had some connection to dragons, given that dragons apparently lived near Doma, too...)
@ StarDrake
Higiri (?) did say that Yugiri's people have suffered alot more at the hands of the empire than other Domans.
In regards to the naming, since Raen clans naming convention is closer to japanese, then perhaps the Xaela are more archaic japanese? Since they are more nomadic and more isolated
Raen = Rain
Xaela = Zay-La
JP pronounciation is Ren and Zera ( Considering JP uses R for a L and Z for a X it would be Xera )
I think the Xaela are going to be more like the Mongols, at least that's the way the Dark Knight gear rubs me.
If we're lucky maybe Fernehalwes is allowed to speak of them a little more now and will fill in the blanks. The wait for benchmark / further lore is killing me. I like planning ahead for my characters. :c
The Au Ra are based off a previous race it just isn't in any of the new game go back and look at some of the underground races in FFIV or there are more in FFVI also in FF Adventure 2 for classic game boy while it isn't exact it is close enough that it is not a leap to say they could be the same and given that they seem to want to tie all of the games together in one universe.
We don't have any written katakana on our end (it'd be there if you look through the JP forums) but we have heard the names spoken by Yoshi-P in the live letter.
It's not quite garaigo or wasei-eigo since they're fictional words, so I'm not sure what to call it. :P
I'd also like a naming convention guide, as I've a few ideas knocking around and want to know if any make sense for either a Raen or Xaela Au Ra...
What I'm curious about is their patron deity, seeing as the race originates outside of Eorzea. Do they even recognize The Twelve as gods, or have they their own pantheon? If the latter, how will selecting one of The Twelve in character creation make sense? We need far more information on the Au Ra than naming conventions.
All adventurers arrive to their starting city from "out of town". Where "out of town" is is totally up to you to decide. If you're worshiping an Eorzean deity, though, "out of town" probably still means "somewhere in Eorzea". You come from a clan of Au Ra that settled in Eorzea sometime in the past. There could have been Au Ra in Eorzea for ages, and you simply never ran into one. Or, perhaps, you DO come from out of Eorzea, but converted to the local religion. It's up to you to decide.
I have played all of those games and no, there is no Au Ra type race. You are thinking of Maduin from ff6 Im sure, he is an esper not a race. FF adventure 2 is not even a FF game. Its the very first mana game and it was released as a FF title in other regions to sell more copies.
Didn't keepers and seekers worship the sun and moon goddesses since before they came to Eorzea?
The only one I see is Terra's father ( which is an esper so it's not really a race ) http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb2..._-_FF6_iOS.png
Pure speculation, but based on the hints we've been given and in-game characters, I'm assuming female Raen Auri names are going to follow a <Japanese name> <Nounverber> pattern.
It's stated they follow naming conventions similar to Doman names due to close relationships with them; the only major non-Auri Doman characters with full names so far are "Oboro Moonrise," "Tsubame Sunrise," and "Karasu Redbeak." "Yugiri Mistwalker" follows almost the exact pattern, except adding -er on the end (instead of "Yugiri Mistwalk").
Not sure if anyone else noticed this or what the naming conventions for male Raen Au Ra or how Xaela Auri names will be like at all, but I wanted to throw it out there.
It's a good guess though that naming scheme though modified to be <elezen/miqo'te/lalafell/roegadyn/hyur name><nounverber/title> is used a lot too. (i.e. Yabi Two-tails, V'kebbe the Stray, Avere Bravearm, Edda Pureheart) especially when the NPC's full name is only used in solo Duties like class/job quests.
Miqo'te have been in Eorzean for a few centuries. They most likely adopted the Eorzean pantheon at some point in their history. With Au Ra there is no history of them in Eorzea until very very recent history and come from a different country (or countries) under the rule of a dictatorship that iirc doesn't believe in any form of gods (and probably enforces said beliefs on the peoples under their control).
I was hoping male Au'ra were about as tall as male elezen :O in comparison to female Aura, male Aura look very tall (compared to male vs female hyur or miqote who appear to be about the same height no?). I'm thinking about switching to a male Aura, but only if they're mighty tall and aaaaanggrrrryyyyyy looking.
Also, they would fit my name, dragons and all :O
