Wow...just....wow...you all are very technical and are going really deep into this...wish I had something to offer. I am in Vancouver, WA and use Comcast cable internet and rarely have issues especially when I remember to reset my router once in a while. If I use my Ethernet cable I have almost 0 issues. Cannot wait to see what the end outcome of all this ends up being.

Would be a bit more telling if you just ran something more along the lines of tracert/traceroute. May have something to do with the recent storms. Have you checked stability along your route(s)? I've been getting 50-60ms response times fairly consistently since TWC shifted me to Cogent last week. The odd exception was a downed node in Atlanta last Thursday that was wreaking havoc (which they managed to correct by the time I got my oil changed in my Honda), and last night my modem rebooted a couple times.
If after about 15-20 minutes the server hasn't automatically "reset" your access so you can log back in, you should probably submit a support ticket. It may require manual tweaking of the character data -

I've also had this lag spike issue on NA server (Excalibur) since the latest patch came out. Usually happens around 7-11pm on weekdays like clockwork. I will assume it is because that is prime time when people congest the servers. Game is pretty unplayable during those times. Only this game I have issues with. Pretty ridiculous paying to have lag.

44ms, impressive. I'm on around 145ms and I never ever have lag or feel that I'm "behind" reality when I play. This leads me to believe the problem isn't their servers at all but something along the way.

Running winMTR, the problem seems to be at the final hops near the SE servers. I'm getting packet loss at 192.34.76.10, lots at 199.91.189.242, and a few even at the final hop of 199.91.189.30.
Been tracking it for a couple months now and it happens during prime time NA hours... -

If I remember right that is the gateway a lot of people come in through when on Level3 segments. Their car2 hops have been periodically flaking out for a long time now. Been especially bad for the FIOS users. If you are seeing Level3 in your route there is a good chance there are issues with either one of their segments or one of their exchanges.
Take a closer look at your numbers. Don't just track your packet loss...you need to also track your jitter as well (how much variance between ping results). Bad jitter can compound along a route and trigger discarded/retransmitted packets in this game---and if it results in more than ~250ms shift it really monkeys things up. -

I'm with Rias_Hellscythe. Since the last update, I have extreme lag spikes from about 8pm to 11ish pm EST. My ping is 44ms.. and i have no lag else where and I have never lagged before in this game at max settings... Now I get lag spikes even if i put it on minimum settings. I can't do coils during those times which is when I can actually get on and play and it is EXTREMELY frustrating... Fix it plz!!!!

Jumping in here also. Rubber banding since the last update in Mor Dhona, Raids, and large group gatherings.
I run Max settings and have never had an issue until the recent patch and now it is every run i do.

Since the update, I too have been having insane lag spikes where I never had them before. I've tried resetting router etc, and the spikes are still random - been getting them for several weeks now.
I have TWC and have the fastest connection they offer. Also able to run everything on max settings perfectly fine....but as of a few weeks ago, everything has been running smooth, then I get rubber band spikes, followed by the usual 90002 errors.
Internet on my Mac and elsewhere appear to run perfectly fine, but just seeing odd spikes on FFXIV, especially in instanced servers!

I've been having them as well. They started in instanced parts of the game, Aurum Vale, Etc etc. Then it bled into the actual game, and tonight I cannot log in to Balmung (NA) at all without being -immediately- kicked out. My internet hasn't changed at all, and I'm on the PS4, so there's no reason for me to be lagging. It doesn't happen on Siren (NA) I played on there for an hour just messin' around and testing it.
I've been watching this and have yet to see any dev activity recently in this thread - and I've been told by everyone "It's your internet, it's you're internet" even by SE and I've contacted my internet, and I feel like this is totally out of my control and it's frustrating as heck.
I really want to play the game, I pay monthly for it, have pre-ordered Heavensward, but now I'm wondering if I'd have been better off not getting it at all. I'm terrified at this point I'll never be able to play again.
I just want to know that the devs have seen this, and acknowledge this as a problem, which I suppose they have since it's been moved to Being Addressed/Currently Reviewing. -

Yea, I feel like ff14 arr has the worst servers out of all the mmos I have played. I think the .4 sec positional update is annoying by itself, but add that on top of the poor ping and game is almost unbearable. The game has become quite the success I think it's time to upgrade the hardware on the servers and add new servers for the west coast as well as in the EU.

Thing is is I've never experienced it until (Much like many people) the last update/maintencence/patch. It's game breaking, I'm trying to atma grind out in the world and it's kicking me off the server after having only played 5 minutes. There just isn't a way it's my internet, I've contacted them, and Squeenix support - and am waiting for squeenix chat support now. I -refuse- to play Heavensward with this lag. Either they fix it, or I'm done. And I fear, unfortunately, that I may not be the only one.

Okay, usually I do not double post - but there are some ports to forward that I got from tech support on chat today- and I thought I'd toss em' here. I haven't tried em' yet - but if they help you, and I hope they do - they'll be here. I'm on Balmung, and the guy told me these ports might not work for others on other servers, but if you're on balmung and are having this issue - these are the ports he'd given me to foreard.

Port forwarding is typically only useful if you have hard firewall rules blocking all traffic...something like you may see at work, but not typically something you find at home. Besides, those specific ports are normal everyday ports that may even be opened as a standard set with the SPI style firewalls commonly used at home. Regardless, they should be allowed by the stateful inspection feature--email app or browser requests the outbound connection on 25, 80, 110, or 443 based on what you are doing and once that session is established all packets in that session are allowed. For instance if 80 and 443 were blocked you would not be able to browse most normal or secure web pages.
What you likely need to do is make sure your security has exceptions for the XIV files and such so the game is handled just like your browser in that respect. After that, you should probably check the quality/stability of the route you are assigned to your lobby and world services (that route is assigned by the policies of your ISP and their routing partners). -

I really did all i could on my side. Contacted my provider etc. but everything is i would say, kinda perfect on my side. I also dont experience anything comparable on other mmos i play occaionally (some of them are even further away).
So it has to be on SE server side, or the providers in Montreal. Since it started not that long ago and i never had taht kinda lag before since 2.0 im pretty sure it has to be some kind of bug/error or whatever on SE side.
I'm already regreting preordering Heavensward etc. since the lag is gamebreaking.
And there still is no official answer or anything (please correct me if i missed it).
if that continues in 3.0 they def. lost me (or they provide us with new servers and free transfers - even though i doubt taht is the solution) -

Some is because of localized issues, some is due to peering issues (Level3, Cogent, TATA, TiNet/SPA, or their own ALTER.net business class segments). Need to get a good diagnosis of your route to narrow down the congestion so they can adjust accordingly.Quote:

I did play ffxiv just fine for years (ofc i didnt have the same ping like someone directly near the server but it was just fine, and no spikes).
It started like 2 months ago.
I didn't find a way to fix this. Then i also found more problems in other mmos. So i was... damn, must be on my side or something.
So i talked to a friend living close to me, who didnt have issues. so the provider wasnt the problem there either.
I then installed win 8.1. on another disk. And since then, the problem seems to be solved.
So MAYBE IT WAS SOME WINDOWS 7 FIX.
Give it a try - if you can or feel like it, maybe its also a good hint for SE -

I've also been having lag spikes. It's mostly just stuttering. It's especially noticeable during dungeons when at times it take 2-3 key presses to get an ability off. The animation will start and then stop half way or even complete fully, but the ability will still be lit and no damage will be done, forcing me to press the button again. I have roadrunner. I've tried lowering shadows to 1024, enable triple buffering and vsync and even tried standard graphics setting instead of maximum. Nothing seems to be helping.

I have been playing JUST FINE, from January 2015 - May 2015 and then ALL OF A SUDDEN, every day EST from about 8-11 pm I get massive lag. I contacted Verizon FIOS about it, and I contacted SE about it and you guys had to audacity to literally copy and paste your 'router troubleshooting guide' and tell me to CALL YOU, using YOUR TOLL SERVICE. No. No way. LOOK at all these people complaining about the lag.
FIX YOUR LAG. Verizon 'can't do anything about it' and frankly I have had it.

But... they can switch you to another peer to try to get you away from the congested segments. They don't HAVE to use just the one routing partner you are currently using. Ormuco peers with Level3, TATA, and Cogent (and a couple others). Verizon peers with those three also (they also have a peering arrangement through their own ALTER.net business class as well)...it's just a matter of convincing them to take action.
And yes... they CAN do it. Time Warner has been doing it for me for almost a year now. Was on Level3 through the weekend, and tonight I am on TATA. It can be done...they just aren't. -

East Coast, NY/NJ area, using Verizon FIOS. And since several months ago, been getting moderate to severe lag during peak game hours of 7-8pm. 1-3 second lag with ping latency and packet loss.
Trace routing revealed that there is one router somewhere after NYC that keeps dropping packets at that hop and it is the problem. Verizon, of course, can't do anything about it because they say its out of their jurisdiction or something. So hopefully Square can sort that hop out. This issue is pretty severe and widespread among the FF14 community. I think it is worth looking into.
Also, using a VPN, or something like WTFast, does provide a temporary bandaid, improves the connection during peak times by about 80%. However its not a permanent solution. That hop just needs to be sorted out.

I have been constantly lagging since the first weekend of Heavensward release. The hot-fix patch they released Tuesday (?) did not alleviate any of this lag I am experiencing right now. I have this feeling that since it is fourth of July weekend, people are crowding the server. But I can't really say where my problem is. My ping is around 120ms to NA server. I am on U-Verse, playing from Bay Area, California. I tried port forwarding, tunneling using WTF, public DNS without any real result. I sorta want to contact ATT but I do not know how I should approach them on this issue (especially if they are just going to say, "It's not our problem").

Cali has routes that can go through some big hotbeds for congestion. Generate/save some trace logs to the server your client uses (run resmon while logged fully in game to find it) as well as some other popular sites/services (another game or things like youtube, Netflix, hulu, Microsoft, etc.). You should get some that show both good and bad pathing that demonstrate the difference to your ISP---forward them to them. Once their Tier3 team reviews them they should be able to escalate some sort of fix.
As for the VPN...sometimes you need to manually choose a different tunnel to connect to. You can wind up hitting the same congested area(s) through a VPN. But that is the beauty of a VPN. You can change your route on demand to demonstrate the difference. That is ultimately how I got my ISP off their duffs. I showed them a good and bad VPN route, then showed them how bad theirs was. -

I play on PS4 and PSN has been giving me issues. Would going thru Sonys server give me lag spikes/ packet loss in FFXIV? BTW im on Time Warner Cable 100 mbps, I also know Sony throttles there speeds to, seems to be around 50-55mbps. EDIT: Have a new router still getting lag spikes/ packet loss.

I'm on PC and East Coast Verizon as well, and this is just getting terrible. The game, at peak times, gets to be completely unplayable, even solo. Its getting quite old now. Every since HW released its been getting worse and worse.
