That's just a problem OP is going to have to deal with, the decision comes with being a melee DPS. If he really wants to solve the issue, he can just play a ranged DPS, but apparently you need to be good at geometry to deal good DPS, according to OP.

DPS scales non-linearly for every class past the 3rd mob (the sweetspot for most classes to go full-on AoE) which results in less time taken overall to kill the same amount of targets.
Every class is capable of decent AoE to get this done in your 4-man runs. Every. single. one -- melee included.

While not everyone can be a BLM/RDM/SMN, every single class can adequately handle AoE.


If you want to clear room by room, in a tactical, controlled, manner -- go do it with people that want to do it like you.
Don't try and force or put down people who put efficiency over... whatever it is you're trying to argue.

I'm sorry that we've have been ridiculed for not doing big pulls to the point we have been, doing them the moment we load as people expect it.

1) blame the dps who tries to pull more. who tries to report us for MPK if we let them die.

2) blame the healer who tries to out pull us, who tries to report for MPK if we let them die.

3) blame the players who don't understand what "hi i'm new to a dungeon" means or who lack communication skills into asking for larger or small pulls.

we tanks are very sorry, but we can only take so much insult before we crack.


we don't do it to feel tough, we don't do it to feel empowered we do it from being forced to for so long.



joking aside, people can be rude in the game to tanks. I see it with my g/f who was a fresh tank when i met her 5 years ago. In her first post 50 dungeon AK, the healer insulted her to hell and high water all because my g/f wasn't speed pulling the dungeon. She was on ps3 at the time and did say it was her first time. healer stated she shoulda been a stain on the bed sheets. Stating she was bad because she didn't watch a video prior. (my g.f had no pc or smartphone at the time).

Almost every dungeon was her trying to be better, only for the dps or healer to run ahead and get more mobs. Forcing her to do something she was having trouble for. To this day she still tanks, and on and off gets hate from some dirt bag. I recall doing the SB castrum dungeon with the bane like final boss, the healer just up and let her die for no real reason. Too busy asking dps spells and not enough heals.

They didn't even apologies, or said it was a mistake just blamed her.

Luckily the youtube channel Work to game exists now which has been a huge help to her, and her confidence. And now she has better access to a pc, and even a smartphone. though she runs into a few bad apples, she still tries her best. She does enjoy tanking, just the insults she gets are not warranted.

Which is why i have limited pc access outside me going to work, she on it watching work to game videos trying to get better.

Hopefully its a DEAR HEALERS thread next :)

As a healer main for almost 6 years, I encourage tanks to pull more as long as they use cd's accordingly and know to sidestep aoe's. If I'm not healing, I'm dpsing. So I am always casting anyway.

you can do the same, if you want to pull up to each boss go with people you like, and of like minded intent.

also not ever melee has good aoe skills, monk being 1 of them. some melee do good some don't. SE has been slowly down grading aoe's to stop us from large pulling.

Monk has good aoe tho, TP lasts longer now then it did in HW.

The only thing SE's really done to curb larger pulls is put up more gates. Its still easy to melt mobs in a dungeon with most DF combos.

I main a monk, and I know for a fact that they can AoE adequately and, with some smart positioning, AoE well. There is still no excuse to not AoE when the situation calls for it.

not really if you look at raw damage from aoe vs single target not the tp. And look up spells/skills slowly getting the "more mobs hit, you deal less damage" effects. I have no issue with large pulls, i enjoy them as a smn. (dat bahamut damage yo) but you can't just sit back and ignore the changes SE have been doing, outside more and more gates.

pld has no issue with large pulls but some tanks (drk) has had a lot of their defenses neutered since SB launch. foresight was a big reason large pulls happen since it was a defense boost. now some tanks just have 1-2 damage reduction buffs.

did i say not to aoe? i don't recall saying that lol. I said some are better then others. monks single target damage is still better then their aoe damage. May want to read instead of jumping on the post. at 1 word.
