Marriage feedback [inofficial Poll]

Yes someone on the first pages already noted that they should just drop the term marriage.

I think it would be the best way to do it.
Atleast the best i can think of so i hope the idea gets more attention.

Of corse someone will always be offended but i think many "marriage is sacred" people will be happy that their sacred ritual is respected while many of the "same rights for everybody" people will also granted what they wanted. (*edit: or "granted what they want.?.. uh sorry for the bad grammar. :/)

Also, I'm sure it has been mentioned before.. Religion is not the same in Eorzea and Earth. The christian god isn't present in Eorzea, nor the god of any other earthern religion.
If the term marriage isn't used and maybe the word "god" isn't said during the ceremony it'll work out well?
Players could "bond" while the crystals watch over them or something.

At this point we don't even know what the benefits of character "marriage" are. Shared gilpurse? Shared bed? Special ring? In FFXI it was mostly (imho) about the official, GM-hosted ceremony, a sort of RP, even for non-RPers.

I was trying to get a wedding date for over 2 years in FFXI and never got one. If they should make it easier to marry one.

I vote for it. Reasons are that i don't have anything against same-gender marriage in general. Also, it is just a game, I think that people shouldn't care about what that king of matters in a video game, or if they do they would be a bunch of extremists... Plus, a lot of players have characters which are not of the same gender than them. So it wouldn't even always be about homosexuality. And then, who would it bother seriously? As it has been said, square enix fanbase anyway certainly would have nothing against it, especially if both are girls...^^
I think they should just have put it discretly, maybe there would be a rucus now but if they didn't ask and speak about it, no one would have cared. And i think that even now, no one will stop playing the game or make a rucus because they did make it, some may not agree with it totally but i doubt anyone truly care that much.

Could be making it up but I thought the benefit was a free teleport to each other ring or something like it.

Polygamy would be a problem if there are benifits :P we'd just end up with a server where everyone married everyone lol

Benefits are pretty lame, imo. I, personally, have no interest in it. Let others "marry". I'd rather be out adventuring and battling monsters and enemies. I don't want to have to come home to a curfew just to make my ball and chain happy. Screw. That. Part of what makes being an adventurer so appealing is the extraordinary sense of freedom you feel as you travel throughout the world. Marriage means kissing your freedom goodbye.

I'm not really knocking people who are into that sort of thing. I'm just saying I really don't understand the appeal of it in an mmorpg. Well, other than role playing, and even then there are much more exciting scenarios that can be role played. I just... I don't know. It seems like unnecessary fluff to me. A better idea to add to this game is maybe the ability to unlock scenes from events that happened in the past that we don't know about. You know, like unlocking a scene in which we see how Louisioux became leader of the Circle of Knowing, or how Papalymo and Yda first met, or when the Emperor of Garlea decided to declare war. Something cool like that. Or maybe even a way to unlock a storyline for your character in which you become a villian! Or somehow wind up working for the empire! Now THAT'S all kinds of awesome sauce! And what do the devs come up with? Matrimony. lol

The creation of such things are not mutually exclusive. They've already set themselves on doing it, they've already put time and effort into it as it stands. Simply removing it now would render those resources wasted. In the development of a game like an MMO there is always time to add more, just because something like you describe isn't in at launch doesn't mean it won't ever be (and vice versa). Marriage as a feature does not mean that what you describe can never be created.

Wonder if they'll allow different race marriages, too? I think the mechanic should just be there and whoever wants to wed can. There doesn't need to be any real life politics like that inside of a video game IMO. I play video games to have a good time and get away from the real world.

DUDE, I could barely pinpoint what point you were trying to make with your post, lol. No offense, of course. Let me see if I can cover all bases here.

Firstly, I never said they should remove it from the game. They've already announced that it will be in the game, so that would disappoint a lot of people who, for some strange reason that I don't get, are actually looking forward to it. Also it would likely push back the release date, and Twelve knows I've waited long enough to play this game. I merely stated that, in my opinion, it really should not have even been considered in the first place. It seems like a lot of trouble brewing over an addition to the game that looks like a bunch of unnecessary useless fluff. No matter what SE decides to do with this, it's going to tick some people off, and it seems so unneeded and not worth the trouble in my eyes anyway so I wouldn't have bothered trying to put it in if I was the lead dev, or whomever makes this kind of decision. Now, calling it a "union" (as was suggested earlier in the thread), that would be a much better idea. Or simply not having it at all, even better. It's just a lot to go through for something not even remotely relevant to the story, gameplay, or anything else. Not to mention that, as I said before, I love the freedom that comes from being an adventurer, and being tied down to a marriage would be a bit of a bother.

Me either, not that I get away from the real world. I play video games to have a good time even I have a close friend since in XI and we are still not going to get married anyways. She doesn't mind about it at all because we both have female characters. lol

Marriage, Wedding, Wife, and Husband are 4 terms the game shouldnt use. Wife is a woman and husband is a man. If they use something like 'Soul Partner' it could be either as it relates to no gender.

i just wanted to note that my request about multiple character marriage is in no way offtopic here when half of the thread is about terms and words and not about SSM.
(for now i'll use the term soul partnership)

another thing that came to my mind is what's when a soul partnership is established and one of the two doesn't want that anymore?
will there be an option to break up the soul partnership?
or is it just bad luck then?
what kind of procedure would be for that?
is that the decision of one of the two or do both have to make that request?
what if there is no procedure and i just throw away the ring?
can i make a new soul partnership again?

you see... people fall in love. people stop loving each other. and people fall in love again.
especially when they're young.
and what can be quite precarious irl and all the questions above could be easily solved ingame
by just allowing soul partnership with multiple characters.

Breaking up should be somewhat hard - we dont want people running around getting 'married' just so they can collect teleport rings. (Also why polygamy wouldnt work, since everyone teleport to everyone... lol - unless you added like "main soul mate" and then lessers)


Also the discussion of words directly relates to SSM in FFXIV - it was to think of a way both logical to lore and friendly to all (lower conflict possibilities).

So "marriage" could still have other simple perks, and the teleport ring isn't guaranteed.

But going with the ring idea, I can see it happening like this, hypothetically:

• Form a 2-person party (M/F or whatever restrictions)
• Talk to a marriage NPC
• Complete a quest / view a cut scene
• Reward is a U/U ring for each player inscribed with the other player's name.
• Ring can be used to teleport to the location of the name inscribed on it.
• To get "divorced", one of the players throws away his/her ring.

This uses existing game features to keep "marriage" between two people and prevents multiple simultaneous "marriages".

And yet you have yet to even try to reply to my earlier suggestion. You want polygamy so that your alts can be married to the same person. Making marriage account wide solves that. Make it an option if enough people want a choice in the matter. Done.

i marked it with the 2 options you mentioned.

maybe i didn't get you quite right, but the result of both options - no matter how much work it would be for the devs - would be the same:
we've got more than 1 character married to the same person.

the only difference i see in those 2 options is that in option B we only have one ceremony and in option A we have more than 1 ceremony.
i was never speaking of marrying more than 1 person in the same ceremony.

so where's the big deal with allowing more than 1 soul partnership or w/e.
the gay minority here wants to be heard, but what about bisexuals as example that don't want to choose between man and woman, but a relationship to both genders?

(oh and everyone please forget about that damn teleport ring. when teleport to everywhere becomes as easy as Yoshi-P recently announced that'd be quite useless anyways.)

In that case, what you probably want is the ability to marry someone regardless of what gender they are, male or female. (Then again, that's what people who want SSM want as well, so whatever.) I think you're suffering from a gross misunderstanding as to what being bisexual means. Being bisexual is not defined by having more than one partner each of different genders, it means you have no preference over either gender as a mate. And if SS bonding is allowed in the game, I'm pretty sure bisexual people will be quite satisfied, as they can pick their soul mate from either gender.

So, your argument is not for bisexuals, it's for polygamists. Because they're the ones who will not benefit if a relationship such as the one you described is not enabled. Bisexuals should be fine.

Yes, I know you can be bisexual and polygamist at the same time. But I also know there's a stark difference between being bisexual and polygamist. I don't think polygamy is going to work, because of the perks that come in this game from having a soul mate. I also think that having a mate is going to be defined as a special bonding between two people in this game. I just don't see polygamy requests working out too well.

I think it's fine to have SSM in the game. I mean we are in 2013 it's not much of a big thing now a days. Personally I feel that people should love who they want to love and not be judged by people. Again that's just my opinion. Further more it is a game that supposedly supports customization to the players liking. I think if SE is going to implement something they should implement it across the board so that all players can play the way they wish to play or not implement it at all. I mean really what is the point of this "marriage" concept anyway? The game will be awesome even without this lol :) But if they do decide to implement this concept I think they should make it possible for SSM just as much as OSM. I think it's about being fair to the entire FFXIV community. ^.^

Oh, if only everyone thought that way. We'd have a lot less death and anger and a lot more happiness and peace in this world. Alas, they don't. Which is why it's best being left out of the game altogether. It can only bring trouble, no matter which way you go with it.

I think the problem after all is that SE made a big deal of it themselves.
If they had just implemented marriage as "a bond between two people" without defining their gender, maybe no one would have bothered saying anyting about it.
Or even if, they could have said "It's more simple that way, we'll just leave it like that".
But by actively putting a gender-check in there and telling the world "It's too controversial for us" they make controversial what otherwise wouldn't have been a big deal.

Like, you know, other gaming companies did it.

Remember that part in The Lorax movie when they're singing and that one guy goes:

"I say let it die!"

"Let it die, let it die"

"Let it shrivel up and die!"

I just want to enjoy the game..

Sounds to me like a can of worms.

I'm all for people enjoying their lives but I don't want every game I play, to have to come with these kind of choices.
If you really want to support same sex marriage, write your congressman/woman.
Get active in the real life community.

I think it is a horrible idea to include marriage at all. Either same sex or different sex.

I am heterosexual but I don't have any reasons against same-sex marriage. I talked to my sister and she said she wouldn't let her daughter to play this game even if it has same-sex marriage. Yeah yeah she's a Christian but that's just her opinion. :3

Well did your sister say its because of religion why she wont let her daughter play? They could be unrelated features - it makes statistics really shitty lol. "This person killed someone" "they played video games" "games made them violent", yeah they also ate food, slept, and had other real issues preexisting.

Maybe she thinks they are a distraction (/waste of time) or the daughter is too young to be playing with other people.
