I agree with your sentiment about a society that does not want to read, but I just want to say that you are wrong about South American countries and 80% Literacy rating. In fact one of the lowest ratings in South America is Peru at 89% or so (Mexico is over 90% as well). We grew up in Colombia and have always loved reading, my little brother as well, so I can vouch for the next generation, but then again, we barely managed to escape the "Nintendo" age group of kids that grew up playing inside staring at a TV instead of going outside and playing.

Another problem with this "literacy ratings" is that countries like the United States only go and do the Census in neighborhoods where the people are for the most part at least junior high educated and then bloat their results, when in fact, the people who do not know how to properly use words like "There, Their, They're, Your, You're, etc." are those "educated" Americans.

I think your way off base bringing in literacy rates and what not. I wont argue with your numbers, because thats really low on my Give-a-sh*t-o-meter. I am pretty sure most people who play MMORPGs can read and write well enough for the purpose of playing the game (thats most not all). This is a cheap attempt to side-track the issue.

The real issue is not about how people need more imagination as one person in another thread suggested to me. It also has nothing to do with literacy or being lazy. This is a Triple A P2P MMO and its F@#&ing Final Fantasy!!!! I love to read, and do it quite often. I have to read and write a lot for work, and in the recent past for some continuing education credits. I also love reading fantasy novels, and go through about 1 a week. I love reading about an exotic fantasy world and using my imagination to build it in my mind's eye.

However, a videogame is a different animal, and this is an electronic form of entertainment. This is NOT old school pen and paper with D&D, and it is NOT a book. I will be paying for this game and much like a movie it is the devs jobs to entertain me with content and a quality interactive storyline. I dont even mind them using all text and no voice acting. Thats not the issue. I just don't want to read a wall of text that isnt even in game or even in game text that has no animated sequences with it. Those CS will give more life and atmosphere to the story. Last but not least (and I cant over emphasize this) this is a Final Fantasy Title and as such I will (eventually) expect both in-game and GC animated CS sequences as I expect them in all FF titles. The only way I would not expect this is if FFXIV had come out as a book and not a videogame.

Firstly, I'd like to give my input on this Easter event. I thought it was a good mini-story on its own. There was the beginning that told us about the event, the middle which was where bad things started to happen in which the players were involved in helping during the bad times, and then the ending of the event but with a small twist. The enemy started out to be the Spriggans only to find out later that it was these "hooded" man and woman to be the culprit behind the fiasco. But I'm pretty sure that even then, they aren't the "real" enemy. To me, this definitely sounds like a Final Fantasy story (even if it isn't the main story, or if it is tied to the main story, we don't know yet)

Now for the nay sayers, I really don't understand why these people are complaining. People complained about these events not being enough, "oh it only has bells" etc. Now they give us no bells and a story to go with it from beginning to end. Granted not all of it was in-game, which would have been nice, but maybe that is something to "suggest" the dev team so the next event they have planned, could be a bit more in-game involved, instead of complaining that this event was crap or whatever other negativity comments there are.

I don't care as long as the game is fun to play. Tanaka had a great vision but it is apparently hard to actually implement...plus I still have resentment towards Tanaka for how...I don't know how to phrase this...badly he left the game in shambles. It looks like he was really lazy with just about every aspect of the game. A vision is fine and all but the game wasn't/isn't even close to what his vision was.

I cant believe I just read every single post, hoping for some ppl's theories on what might be happening surrounding the event.

Nope instead I just read 128 posts about how this event sucked.

Devs please lock this thread and throw it away. Theres no reason to add anything else to this discussion.

Theory #1:

Jihli did receive the authentic Dreamer's Gospel, but completely misinterpreted it.
Others, who choose to remain in the shadows, know that the Gospel is authentic.
Jihli is considered only a minor threat because she misinterpreted the message so badly.
But she is still a threat because she still was a witness to something. Something significant.
If she passes what she knows to someone who CAN figure out the real message ... those Echo Pathwalkers for example ...
They can Echo into her recollection and find out what really happened that night she received the Dreamer's Gospel.
Clearly that cannot be allowed to happen.
Killing her would be too suspicious, raise too many questions, and invite further investigations.

I am displeased with it as well, but for the most part, we must help make this game become what it was supposed to be. Everyone has different visions, and it just doesn't work sometimes. People kinda have to think "inside" the box that has a label "Final Fantasy" on it, and not "Other MMORPG Ideas."

That is the bottom line here. Once we establish a common basis for our ideas, and after we start realizing what sort of ideas are being accepted and which ones aren't, only then will we be able to stay on the same page together and fix this game. :)

I totally agree, this game is still young yet, and Most of the Groundwork patches have already been implemented, Which is the main reason why our first real big patch is coming next month. Only thing really left now is The Battle system changes after that I would expect Content patches and hotfixes here and there till they finally release the PS3 Verison of the game, at which point after the first month of it being launched, SE can decide ok its time to Put a monthly fee on this game now that we fix it for the FFXIV community.

And what they are doing right now as far as Letting us play for free, Making this Game playable by the time we start playing, and also the big part, waisting tons and TONS of money to make this game right for us as were playing for free, SE should get some gratitude for the people who are sticking around. Not saying to praise them like there holy god and they do everything right no, but show a little appreciation for there hard efforts they are doing to make this game right =).

I high lighted that first part specifically. These are your own words. How is this any different from the "whiners and complainers"? In all honesty if we are going to call people whiners and complainers, doesn't that include pretty much everyone that has a specific vision for the game and are vocal about it? Everyone does have different visions of how this game should be, and thats why we have people disagreeing on these forums. However, everyone is in fact entitled to their opinion and can disagree with others. Just because they disagree with your opinion doesnt make them wrong or children.

The devs for better or worse created these official forums, because they wanted to better communicate with us (which I commend them on). This communication runs both ways. They give us info about upcoming features and what their plans are on a given subject, but they have said many times that they also want to hear from us the players. Is this communication working? Yes. Was it the best choice? Probably not. I see problems with arguments on these forums all the time, and I think that could have been avoided by not having forums and just having more Players Polls instead. From the other angle, while I do appreciate the devs communication, I do think that they hold back info a bit too long.

I definately agree with you on that second paragraph. However, that gets into my issue with this games lack of direction for so long. Now we have Yoshi-P, so I have been looking forward to great changes. The problem is that we dont have specifics and are often not told a general time-line on many things. Now we know that in mid-June we will have the beginning changes to the battle system, but the devs failed to mention how soon the rest of the battle changes would come. And with us being this close to those changes, there is no way that the devs don't know what the new battle system will look like (i.e. they cant make changes if they dont know what they are doing). Given that, I am pretty sure they already know how a lot of the new systems and any changes they make will work out, but they arent telling us????

Once we can get more specific information about what they will do, and not vague or cryptic answers, then we can all get on the same page. Because if Yoshi-P came out on a lot of the topics in one of his letters and told us how things were and what they were going to do, I'd have far less issues. Now I might disagree, but if Yoshi-P told us this is how it will be and you can take it or leave it, then that would be it. And a decent confirmation on things as well as a timeline if applicable. At that point I'd know how the game was going to turn out, approximately when it would have x, y, or z features, and a general layout of the direction of the game as well as a deeper understanding of Yoshi-P's vision. And if I didnt like it I'd either deal with it or leave. And I don't think I am the only one. There are many people that just want to know what this game's finished product will look like so that they can re-dedicate themselves to this game, resign themsleves to the way things are, or quit and move on to another game. And for those that might not exactly love the new direction, but are still willing to stay, you'd probably see far less arguments from them. The arguments you would see would be based upon a common basis for our ideas, and what sort of ideas are being accepted and which ones aren't in accordance with Yoshi-Ps vision.

The ones that are on here more often than the game are the ones that do all the whining yes. In game everyone is wonderful you are right about that, but one thing you can never forgot.. Cant please everyone.

You'll have to basically co-ordinate with other in your LS to make stuff you need, or fully embrace the nightmare by being all crafting professions.

I disagree. I noticed this game had a bad community way back in beta and nothing has changed. In-game if you're not able to do something with your linkshell then you're not doing it. People don't help randoms and rarely even speak to randoms. Just when they want something.

Well.. we get singing people in Ul'dah. XD And ppl answer to shouts, myself included, when someone has questions. I met a lot of ppl outside my LS without even partying with them, just talking or emoting lol

Most of the in-game event happened on the lodestone.

honestly I think this even was part of the larger event going on. That this easter event was the introduction to it. Since the easter story and the storm over gridania intertwine.

The way I see it both are the same event just 2 different stories. I took notice that both easter storying and the storm happen in gridania. And it will lead into a bigger event (such as the day of judgement when the impending darkness falls on the land, when the grand companies step forward again to aide in the fight against it)

Pretty much to see it, look at everything that happen as a hole. First the mithra and her cult following come along seeing gospels and handing out eggs, then in each city one of the sprigs goes rogue stealing them and you have to get them back. At the same time her cult followers talk of a darkness that was told about. Then darkness did befall our world with constent rain or stormy weather. And now this mithra had a failed ritualand having her memory wiped of her event by strange cloaked people.

Also for those complaining about event stories in a ff mmo, play ffxi. They did stories for EVERY HOLIDAY EVENT. One of my favs was the Dark Lillies story where you followed the ghosts of the witches and learned why they haunt those locations, why they became Dark Lillies. (laters years they got ride of the story since the ghosts got purified and added "actor" to march the same route )

FFXI Was and still is one of the best MMOPRGs Out there enough though the population wasnt as great as dare I say it "wows" but Wow didnt have the Immerse Storylines/lore as FFXI did, and FFXIV is starting to pick up on that in which it was lacking @ Launch

WoWs lore (if you can call it that) was based off an rts. ffxi had lore both ingame and around it. As does ffxiv. There is lore around the game. And honestly I wouldn't say it lacked it since it was just starting out, most story intros are not that massive.

Even when adapting books for the big screen, film-makers can't just put a black screen with a scrolling page of words up there and expect an audience to be engaged (unless they're George Lucas or some other idiot). Film makers have to make changes to fit the genre.

I think video game developers should do the same. A video game is meant to have a story, sure, but by general rule, the player of said video game is supposed to act out the story, or be involved in some other immediate way.

Reading about the lore of a GAME on a website OUTSIDE OF THE GAME doesn't really make much sense, from my perspective at least.

I have to ask so how many of you like playing Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls, Star Wars Kights of the Old Republic, FFXII, FFXIII?

I PLAY games, I don't READ games, and I couldn't be forced off game in order to know what's going on. I don't read for fun its not my thing, accept that, some people don't, and a game is not a reading material, its a game. SE knows people prefer to be playing than reading, they use full voicing, all game companies mainly do and then there is reading if you want to find out more (such as in FF games 10/12/13 etc) the main stories are narrated and they talk and have cutscenes and if you want to find out more you get to explore-optionally and read it.

I dont mind so much like the easter even though I wish more of the reading material was ingame, I hate being forced off a game to know whats going on ingame, it just doesn't make a lot of sense.

oh i agree that it should have occurred in game and used at least some means of visual storytelling, but to ask for voice overs is too much, and doesnt add anything to a story. Some of the best parts of last oddessy didnt involve voice overs at all.

Not to mention increases the cost greatly, and often has lukewarm results. (a lot of voice acting is poor and ruins scenes)
and lets be honest the rpg genre is built around a writing style narative, where they can show the thoughts of players, or how something made the charachters feel. A lot of cost/time for a very small gain.

One of my favorite parts in Nier is when the game turns into a text RPG. Black screen and text - just as you're discribing lol you just dont get engaged in it if you don't want to. I'd hate to see you back on the Text RPGs era lol

But I agree with you to some level. I would've loved to see a cutscene of the summoning but I wasn't expecting that, cuz this is just an event and they are focusing around more important stuff, while still keeping us busy and interested with this event. I loved it and I'm sure the next one will be even better :)
