Wow, the artwork is gorgeous. I love her outfit :)
Post in here, keep bringing it up:

Since this thread is becoming something "unnatural", I'll leave with this.
I think Shiva looks great; I can tell they put a lot of time and effort in her look. A+ Dev team.
hmm real time shaders.. That would be neat to to have her sparkling
After every Shiva Fight your party will look like you mauled a pixie.. :D
(I like the model too, just doesnt feel very Shiva-y, but as you say there is still loads of ways they can modify the model)
- you bolded too much, hurts me eyes precious -
Thank you for bolding the pertinents. I was trying to say that, but I tend to get a little long winded. I agree as well, I find the overall change in design (color aside) to be refreshing and quite interesting. Then again, I was never a huge fan of the original Shiva design.
Sadly I doubt it'll happen when Yoshi said he's being cautious about this stuff lol. Probably wait till after Beta when they're likely more confident in their material. The last time they released 'HD/higher res/etc" for 1.0 stuff people chastised them for not using all the bells and whistles.

Less name calling, more sexy pixels.
Indeed, there's a lot of fans of the typical design much like there's a lot of fans of the typical Chocobo design that'd probably be on the fence/against a complete change in direction of chocobos suddenly grew arms along with their wings and were less bird like and more demon like. Some would like that though.
If I want a sudden change in delivery and style I'll go play the ending of Mass Effect 3 again... :P
FF is famous for iconic re-delivery (someone suggested we wanted something different.. for some reason.. lol)
Btw that chocobo could be a cool "added" mount but I'd flip so many tables if it replaced the original adorable chocobo :D
Oh calm down, I havent seen one nasty post on this blog yet, people have been thanking Ferne and the devs for the pics. People are just concerned about Shiva since shes one of the most popular summons in the FF games, clearly why shes been in all of them, and if not most.
And no one saw my other post :(? Does anyone even remember that movie?
Sadly, FFXIV community, you can't show concerns or be against anything without people attacking your posts.
Indeed, remember how people reacted to the chocobo song for XIII-2 when they thought it was the new song for all of them?
MMMMM MMMMMM I seem to be having some nasty thoughts.
People are entitled to their opinions and I understand Shiva is an FF icon. She can and will evolve though.
Twenty years ago, on 8 and 16 bit machines, making her blue to symbolize cold or icey made sense because it was simple and developers couldn't do a whole lot in terms of graphics.
But today is a different story. Graphics are super detailed and complex. Developers can do pretty amazing things.
Trust me, I totally understand people wanting Shiva to be blue. The character has years of history. But all things change.
Her skin being more pale and white doesn't bother me at all. Ice is not blue. I have not seen her animated or lighted or with whatever effects she might have. If they can make an effect where her skin looks like its coated in ice I think that would look awesome.
To each his own though, this is just my $.02.
To many people didn't understand what they were looking at. They should have just given us a greyscale model and the (HIGH RES) concept art.
The design is very cool though. From the primal group art poster, its possible that her hair might be textured to look like ice...
I think this is a brilliant design. It's still Shiva, but she has the whole bitchy ice queen thing going on a bit more this time. The crown is delicious. I'm sure she'll have some sort of icy aura around her anyway, but I think the pale skin works really well on its own.
To everybody being troubled that Shiva doesn't feel "icey" or classic despite knowing that the textures are just a placeholder and a modeler's aid, I decided to recolor an old, "classical" Shiva to this palette.

How icey does she feel?
EDIT: Just out of clarity, my point is to show how much difference can the coloring make. There's no reason to judge this Shiva for being not "cold" enough, when her skin is warmth and everything.
First, awesome recolor
Second, I dont like it at all ( as Shiva ) lol - actually it reminds me of yunalesca x yuna mix
I think it could be interesting if Shiva "normal mode" is semi human pale white ("Twilight White") but once she starts flinging Ice everywhere ill be damned If she isnt sparkling and frosty. lol
The blue cold color scheme is shiva's anchor point in design (that and a general clothless getup), like a warm red orange is Ifrit's.
Wow. This is now my favorite Shiva model of all time.
She looks like a goddess. I can't wait to hear her voice, and see her in action.
Curiously though, she does seem to have pale blue skin both here:

and here:

Judging by all the other Primals, I don't think they'd make her look too different from the actual artwork. I don't mind the pale skin if it's not blue, but I do wonder why they would show it pink and not grey.
Also, I can't wait to see how her hair is textured to look like ice!
I was reading that you can paint directly on to normal maps so I wasn't sure exactly what we are being shown.
The colors do look like this though:
http://wiki.polycount.com/NormalMap?...ngentseams.jpg
I'm not sure how I feel about that. Conceptually I like it, but from what I've seen, I haven't been terribly impressed by their Anisotropic/Phong shaders. They work fine on opaque materials, but translucent glassy structures like, say, Icicle Hair, are distinctly lacking still.
I guess I need to re-post this:
THIS is what she will look like.

The colors shown on the zBrush model were not the normal maps either, they were just reference or sub-object working colors for the artist.. The geometry will be used for generating the normal maps, but the colors we saw were arbitrary choices made by the artist.
Trust me, I have working knowledge of the zBrush normal-mapping pipeline.
Ah hah, thank you! :) I should have read the whole thread. Love that art SO MUCH.
EDIT: Hold on, was that an official dev response or just people speculating again? Either way, I don't see why they wouldn't stick to the art like the other Primals.
Oh c'mon xD I just (slopply) selected areas of the picture and shifted their tonality toward another color. It didn't take me more than 10 minutes. Thank you though :)
It was just to, exactly, prove my point. That no matter how good the base model is, if you throw weird colors on it it's gonna look weird. And if you judge by the (placeholder) colors, your brain is simply being deceived.
You said it yourself― this is the FFX Shiva that we all love. Yet with this palette she looks SO weird, despite her base model being perfectly fine.
Ferne said exactly on which particular program this model was being created on. And in that particular program, people with 3D modeling experience said, putting good textures is somewhat problematic. The textures we see now are most likely a visual aid for modellers so they don't have to stare at a confusing, completely grey model all the time.
Nophica's left nipple, people, he even -says- that it's normal map sculpt data. What in the hells is wrong with people's reading comprehension? This is why there's a drought of new information and-slash-or why we can't have nice things. He even -provided a shot of concept art we'd never seen before- as a "this is what this'll look like when it's done", for Althyk's sake.
Really, guys? Really?
I wonder if they had released a model with no texturing or colors at all (you know, that weird completely grey 3D version) if people would've have gone: "She's so grey! Why did they make her like that!?"
Prolly not, but it's really the same thing. Earlier I mentioned that I thought was hoping they'd make her blue/icy which is clearly their intent. This is just a preview of what's coming. Can't blame people for not knowing about 3D graphics and their creation process though - it's a designer kind of aspect that most people just see the final result of.
And I have the need to repeat that not everyone knows what a normal map sculpt data is. That caused the confusion.
Thanks to everyone who took the time to explain that particular bit though. The "reading comprehension" is apparently off on both sides. Really.

GOOGLE IS HARD D:!!!
Lol chill out.
I know what ZBrush is but I have next to zero experience with it. He could have said it was Mudbox, Maya, or any other software and people still wouldn't understand. It has nothing to do with reading comprehension and more to do with people not knowing about modeling pipelines. Thankfully we have a few fellow posters who do.
You guys aren't exactly being fair. Its not a matter of reading problems or people are lazy. But the average person will see a full color image as a finished product unless the technicals are explained.
