The turning isn't a surprise.
Why do we always get so many duplicate threads? I mean you have to have seen the main page to post here.
I remember him saying that he wanted to do air and a water expansion, and that he was going to do water first because for some reason western gamers really love water stuff, but he prefers air. And than in a later interview he basically said, "you know what, i busted my ass off to remake this game, and i like air better so the first expansion is going to be in the sky, and if you don't like it than suck it!" ............. or something like that >.>. Thats how i took it anyways.
I still think he should do water (ironically I'm also western.. lol). But it makes sense in a way of progression though. He talked about player airships but it would feel like downgrading if you went from airships to player boats... lol
Also I want to upgrade my boat into an airship with the iconic propellers. Love me propeller ships lol
ARR Gridania looks amazing. It looks the same enough to 1.0 Grid to be believably the same place, but different enough to coincide with the radical changes that happened in the world and the time that has passed. Love it, love it, love it. I still don't regret having chosen Grid as my starting area.
Just stopping by to say the animations still suck. And I'm not going to keep it contained to one thread or whatever. I'm going to make a big stink about it, every time they show a video, and I see it, and the animations are still bad, I'm going to raise a stink about it so long as I still have access to the forums. That way maybe hopefully the mods around here will know that some of the non-apologists around here won't take this downgrade lightly, and they can relay it back to the devs.
Not even kidding. The animation is some of the worst I've seen in an mmo in a while. The pivot, the way they rebound-slide after a jump, the awkward halt, etc.
I hated on GW2 animations a lot (many of their animations still suck) but now, FFXIV looks even worse. FFXIV went from being unparalleled, blowing other games out of the water, to some of the worst in the industry. NOT ACCEPTABLE.
I expect the utmost quality from Final Fantasy. I expect attention to detail and artistry, intricately crafted minute details that the usual pleb wouldn't even notice or appreciate. That is one of the things that can set this game apart from the crowd, and they are compromising it, and people around here trying to defend SE are compromising it too.
You can say well the lighting looks better, so overall it looks better, so it's okay that the animations suck. SCREW THAT NOISE. I want better lighting and I want my impeccable animation quality back.
In other news I like the zone transitions. It's much more classy than having a gigantic warp portal for no effing reason (gw2).
let's just say, if you disagree with me then yes you are an apologist, while I am a troll.

Host: We can jump now! But what about flying and swimming?
Yoshi-p: I am more towards flying at the moment. Since it’s a Final Fantasy, and having airships and going to the skies sounds like a really nice idea to me. But this is all too soon to talk about.
I believe he mentioned it during this event. I'm not sure where in the video though.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_737h...ature=youtu.be
Edit: in response to casker, quoting you makes my post look to big :( rofl
You might be a troll (tbh cant tell/dont care :D haha) but there are people who whole heartily think its a downgraded version of the game JUST because of the stupid animations. That lets be honest with ourselves.. you aren't even going to be paying attention to while you're trying to avoid Amun's AoEs or battling through the crystal tower, killing behemoth, odin, levi, enjoying the new revamped hamlets/behests, etc...
Server stability: same or better for certain servers
Regional Servers(FINALLY): upgrade - 300-700ms just isn't up to standards
Graphic engine: upgrade - luminous's offspring (AMAZING)
Combat system: upgrade - increased pace, removed animation lock, fluid
Music: ok tbh I usually play my own in the bg but still, upgrade (soken lovers)
Content: upgrade - basically everything is revamp'd so everything is new content + "true" new content
Insignificant Animations: "downgrade" - removed or tweaked
Listed just a few fundamentals, of course there are plenty of other amazing stuff such as; basically new world, housing, jobs, FC's, Golden Saucer, content finder, bigger bust sizes barely :P, etc etc
And don't forget the reason for them to create a new graphics engine was also because it's easier and faster for them to add new content or equipment in future. I am pretty sure they are still optimizing the animation thing but don't put your expections too high. I love what I seen until now and I am looking forward for more information. The only thing I wish for this game is more Final Fantasy feel. I know they are adding moogle stuff, chocobo stuff and so on, but it should also feel like that. It should be unique and somehow different to other MMORPGs. That's all.
This is sounding like cognitive dissonance to me.
So, the animations suck now, well, animations are stupid and significant anyway! Who needs animations!
When trying to rationalize how to deal with the animations, instead of demanding quality, just say they don't matter.
I think that is sad.
Y'all are walking down a dangerous path. A path that does not lead to the game being the best it could be. A path that leads to the game being crap. A compromise here, a compromise there...
They may have made improvements elsewhere (some of that is up to debate) but that doesn't excuse a massive downgrade to 2007 free korean mmo animation. I expect trash tier from Elder Scrolls Online maybe, but not Final Fantasy.
Calm down I'm sure the animations are coming. Considering the fact that Yoshi-P has said more than once that the game will not be released until he's 100% confident it's ready. Alpha was to get some reactions out of people now they're going to fix things! I'm sure even the doors will open the right way. They have high hopes for this game they won't leave out simple animations.
I'll even bet that the instance barrier in that video is just a placeholder.
Harsh.
Constructive criticism is fine. But parading around with negativity only because you think it's the only way to get the dev's attention seems like wasted energy to me. (see Rokien)
And calling everyone else idiots because they seemingly disagree is just as destructive to your cause.
Edit: And before you reply, please consider that I do agree with some of what you're saying (after you take away the insulting words) - We should be critical about things we want to see improved. I made a topic saying as much, with an article to boot.
rofl "massive" downgrade because of the absence of them turning their hips when you pan the camera? Forget all the other fluid motions that are done when moving, emoting, executing weapon skills, riding on mounts, casting spells (animations that do serve a purpose.. to emphasize the actions being made).
Or the detail in the movements of our foes, random non-aggro mobs (albeit not as much as before when livestock would flock around you annoyingly), the amount of detail that went into all that is irrelevant..
No no, because of the hips not moving, that is enough to compare the entire animations of the game to a korean 2007 trash tier mmo...
Reaching a bit far mm?
casker; This is an alpha footage where it is still being developed. A look at the live letters and the gameplay shown there, you can see an improvement from there to current footage as well. So no, we're not saying animation doesn't matter, but as it's already being IMPROVED upon, newer details and more pressing problems should be the main focus.
I'm not saying you're wrong, but in terms of priority, animation won't be ranked very high, as it's not a make-or-break mechanic unlike several other factors.
I shall use the word 'compromise' but instead of a sacrifice in the actual animations, a sacrifice in the development of it while they focus on more pressing issues should be satisfactory, no? I'd rather they focus on the core mechanics instead of satisfying every whim there is, hence alpha.
Part of the Final Fantasy feel for me is pooping on the competition in terms of graphics. Like I said above, utmost quality and artistry, attention to detail. 1.0 did that and was its one saving grace.
Imagine, if you will, that 2.0 sucks. The one saving grace from 1.0 won't be there.
2.0 needs to be better. Not just "good enough." Considering its launch, more than any other game it needs to be more void of weaknesses and deficiencies. And you can say stuff like this is insignificant, but when you're a customer looking at buying one game or another, why would you ever choose low quality over high quality?
Not going to give them the benefit of the doubt here. I don't trust them not to screw up and I don't trust this community to keep them from screwing up.
C'mon, it IS just alpha!
You can troll if it's still like this in beta.
Just look forward and don't piss on every detail.
The whole "walking around" does look good and gosh it is not the point that decides if a game is crap or not.
I think I am the only one who liked FFXIV on it's release 2010 just because I got what I expected.
And where is the difference? I played this game 2 years and had fun and was looking forward for every single patch. And you also played the game but were always complaining.
Yeah I am not happy with some things they add to the game but as long as I like the whole game and the devs work to make it even better I can't really complain because of things like this. Just let them do their work, I bet they already took notice about your animation problem.
I pretty much agree with you though. For me it's always the small things that end up being most important. So the animation thing is actually a big problem imo but I can't see them just leaving such a fundamental thing out and expecting no one to notice or comment on it.
I just don't see Yoshi-P having that mentality if he really wants to resurrect FFXIV.
Well, to be honest, both are quite important towards a game. It's just that the priority of gameplay takes a higher precedent than graphics - if the core of a game is unplayable, no matter how good the graphics are, the game isn't worthwhile. Depending on graphics to make a comeback in a case of a failure is folly - there's no point in saving a game if graphics is it's only good aspect. Let them develop more pressing matters and core mechanics first, to ensure the game is playable to it's maximum potential. Then work on animations, graphics, lighting etc., the facade to disguise and hide the mechanics.
The point I'm making is that they ARE improving with each alpha footage they release. From live letter to current alpha footage of Gridania, the animations have already improved. So they aren't ignoring it - it's just not a main core mechanic to deal with at the moment.
Why wait to troll? Watch, come beta and the animations are still freekorea2007, people will still be mad at me for trolling the animation.
How about this, if they address it in the live letter I will calm down. Even if they still suck in beta but are fixed later. But if they don't mention it, I will take it to mean they are ignoring it.
That's what I meant. 1.0's fault was that the gameplay was designed after the realistic graphics were implemented.
You could look at the Alpha footage and see it as though they're doing it right this time. Polish will come, there's still months (6 months possibly!) before this game gets re-released.
Okay, deal!
I am sure they will not just ignore it. They want to make things better and if there is one thing they changed in the past two years and they already proved it, it's that they are taking notice of feedback from the community. At least more than in the past.
Deal. K, time for dinner.
I apologize if I offended people. :s
If it's beta and animations are still as they are, I would also be pretty disappointed. So I'll join your cause if that happens. Otherwise, alpha is really to make sure the game is playable first and fore most. Other aspects can slowly make their way in.
Enjoy your meal~
I'd rather sacrifice the animations for a beautiful world and good gameplay instead of the shitty copypasta world we have now. Any of you that actually prefer 1.0 to this must have Stockholm Syndrome.
I've always wanted MMO's to feature seasons. Even if it would be subtle, a change in colours, atmosphere, music,... .
I don't think we should be making excuses for this company or just easily accepting whatever excuse they come up with. But I also don't think that the whole game hinges on relitivley small features in the full scope of the design.
I think the animations do need to be better and we can't just bank on the idea that it -might- change later. The game might not fail if it isn't improved, sure, but I see no reason for quality to suffer in the hands of some of the most skilled artists in the industry. For a game as visually based in reality as this, things like momentum and transition really give your character that extra hook and makes everything feel all the more alive. This isn't a concern to be stifled, but it isn't one to balence your expectations for the total quality of the game either.
We don't know what's going to happen, so keep those concerns coming, but keep them in check.
To be honest, if the animations improve by the time the game goes into beta, then we will have you and the other people who are making this argument to thank. Sure it may sound like negativity, but she's just trying to get the point across. They made it this way because that was their idea for it. If no one disapproves then they have no reason to change it. I'm sure they have lots of other things planned that they would rather spend time doing.
It may seem like you're arguing against everyone, but I support your effort to try make all aspects of 2.0 worthy of praise.
