I hit on everyone.
Your mom is a man-girl.
...sorry, somebody had to say it.
Ummm... I play a female miqo'te because there isn't a male. Which is why I'm excited for 2.0 so I can strut my girly boy butt.
I play by only one rule: "You are a man until proven otherwise"
G.I.R.L = Guy In Real Life
(Girl gamer here) I've played a male character only once in an MMO. His name was Big Al and he was a very very big and fat character made specifically to sit on my friends when they AFK too long making me wait. :3
I don't really get the big hate towards guys who play as girls (or the other way around, but I never see that happen ever). Maybe they are just jealous that they aren't secure about themselves enough to play what they wanted so they harass others who do. Idk, that's just my guess lol.
I actually don't mind people who think this because they are usually the ones who are first to hit on you. ^^;
From my experience men can get really nasty when they find out that you are without a doubt a girl.
Yup, that's bound to happen.
I thought hard about which sex to roll. I was contemplating a female lala, but decided against it. In XI me and my gf were unable to get married because I was a female taru and she was a mithra, and SE didn't (doesn't?) allow same-sex marriage (SHAME ON YOU SE!)
Though, if Viera come out in ARR... It's going to be tough not to roll a female one of those.
Hey, I'll have you know that I'm a model gentleman when it comes to hitting on everyone
Real talk though: I only joke around with friends.
Topic-wise, I may play as a girl if one of the following is going on with the game in question:
-Gender-based stats
-Phantasy Star MMO
-Guys look terrible
I play a girl, because armor looks better on a girl.
From time to time, there are people who will use the anonymity of the internet to pretend they are someone else. I've witnessed this happen a few times through the years of playing FFXI and FFXIV. It's always creepy and I don't really understand the purpose of it. For this reason I "always assume dude" unless I hear the person's voice. There is voice augmentation software out there, too, so you can't even always trust that. Red flags are usually things like not wanting to get on voice chat, or getting on voice chat "only to listen" and being a loot-hog.
What I do find somewhat unfortunate is how well defined the sexes are in 14. I managed to keep my sex completely unknown in XI for years.
Only way people ever caught on was if I invited someone to a party or certain emotes. It was hilarious sending an emote that revealed sex to someone who had known me for years and never noticed.
I find female characters more likeable than males in most MMOs. Male chars get boring fast. Kitties are pretty, adorable and more versatile in terms of fooling around with emotes (which i do whenever i have to wait on people or timers because it amuses me).
I never pretended to be a girl behind my kitty. The way i talk (chat) usually gives it away quick. I have people use my name "Max" because its shorter and easier to remember than my character name. It creates a split between me and my kitty in the eyes of my ls mates. They talk to me as a "he", but will refer to my character as a "she". Its always funny to see a kitty posing and playing with yarn, but with a serious and manly voice on vent :P
Hey welcome to the forums and don't trip on people who flame you. I will do my best not to.
I share your perspective in many ways because I am a female whom almost exclusively plays male characters barring some rare exceptions related to seasonal events and retainers. I am entirely bored with playing female characters and refuse to do so 99.9% of the time.
I play out my role as a gay male character and I feel it makes the game more realistic to be my character in-game. It is often hilarious when men in real life playing male characters find out that my gay male character is being played by a female. They might be put off at first by the character being gay but the moment they find out I am female in real life, they feel less intimidated. In any case, no matter what my role is, when some one is offended, I do my best to leave them alone and respect their choices.
My personality in real life is almost identical to my character and thus is carried out in my male characters but I tell people who I interact with that I am female in real life, whenever the subject leans to people referring to me as male in real life.
In other words, I role play to an extent and act my male character out as male but when people start referring to real life personalities I immediately reveal that I am female out of honesty.
-This is like in a linkshell when I'm with some people who refer to me as a male in real life by using male nicknames like 'Hey bloke, hows it goin' or 'Dude' or "What's up man?" as to refer to me in real life, I don't get offended by it but I think it is fair to let them know that I am female in real life.
Generally the LS will start correcting this person or making silly references to tease me by letting them know that I am a female, if not I will do it myself and say so. I think it is perfectly fine to play a gender not your own, after-all, none of us are Elezen, Roegayden or Lalafell but we play those characters and it is fine. It is a -role playing game- so I expect people to play roles.
What I do think is unfair is when people start real life relationships and trick people to the point of actual deception where real bonds are anticipated and assumed, where real friendships are created and carried out into real life. For instance a woman who is engaged to a guy online and plans to meet him only to get stood up because it came down to finding out that the person was not a guy.
This person can be emotionally harmed in real life. Some people can say that it is their fault for forming an online relationship without knowing or by trusting without knowing for sure but I believe relationships are a partnership of dual responsibility and both are equally responsible for their own actions.
I have had women actually fall for me in real life through my male character, knowing that I am a woman, still felt the same and strong friendships remain but I kept it honest. They sometimes just prefer role playing with me being male in character because that bond gives them joy in real life. Experience and bonds can be real and some times bonds transcend gender, I just believe honesty is essential.
Many people just like the idea of playing a different gender in real life and in character for the fantasy aspects of it but not out of intent to deceive, it is just that to be authentic, they have to retain their fake identity.
Like in the above situation, I don't see harm in playing a gender not your own if it is strictly in character and the other person does not anticipate ANY real life connection whatsoever.
Still, even then, the person you play with might be insulted or offended to find out that they played with a different real life person than they thought. If you think a real life connection is being formed based on the idea that you are not the gender that you are, it can be difficult to carry on. I personally cannot do this as long as I know that the other person anticipates a real life relationship or friendship is taking place with the gender that I am not.
When it comes down to it, if you are concerned then ask. If their real life gender matters to you then ask. Give the person an opportunity to tell you the truth.
Enjoy the forum and if you meet me in game, it really doesn't matter to me what you are in real life. If the situation arises for some reason, where it does matter, I always say so..openly..clearly.
What does being a loot-hog have to do with it :p
Kinda reminds me of those eps in Welcome to the NHK when the main char starts playing an MMO suspiciously like FF11, then 'falls in love' with a 'mithra' only to find out later that she is
actually his male neighbor...
In a fantasy game, why be something you are in real life? Why not be something/someone new?
I primarily play female characters.
I understand this way of thinking..it is fun to be something you are not IRL XD However..I always try to make it look like me because I like who I am RL ^^ Not implying others don't or anything by any means lol
And yeah Tahldon I agree with you 100% also, well said :o
No need to get your panties in a bunch because you don't agree with my views. I swear there are so many nazis out there. "If you don't agree with me then you are a stupid horrible person." I never said there was anything wrong with liking a strong female role, there are plenty out there. Like I said as well, I am not going to give people crap about there choices even though they are choices I would not make. Yet for some reason you have a problem with this? O_o Are you serious?
When interviewed back when this game was new, Nobuo Uematsu himself said he would pick Miqo'te as his race if he were to play the game, because he would want his character to be as unlike himself as possible, since he spends every day of his life as himself. I think that was on the making-of DVD that came with the collector's edition (or might have come with every copy, I don't remember)
There's a real simple answer to this.. Just don't flirt with people online! Its a game, so you should be playing a game. Its not a chat room to cyber and flirt, that's sort of just pathetic. If you want to find someone go out in the REAL WORLD and meet with people, not behind a computer screen.
This I mean is for the men who want to buy female characters presents and flirt and such and complain that they might not be real women, then just DON'T DO IT! lol
~That is all ^^
On another note, you shouldnt feel obligated to play someone of the same gender if you dont feel to do so, as long as your PAYING for your subscription, dont let anyone tell you how to play your game!
If your looking for a hot date for Saturday night, go look on e-harmony or what ever dating sites tickles your fancy. People should be free to play the gender of their choice, no questions asked.
Unless the other party is paying for my sub, then I do what I want and others should do the same.
Referring to the part of your post that I put in bold: I understand what you mean but to be honest, often people who I have encountered who develop personal relationships in real life through playing an mmorpg with some one, are friends first then things go on from there. What I mean is that their goal in playing an mmorpg was not to get a romantic partner or cyber buddy, it just so happens that they engage with a person over long periods of gaming time and a relationship forms.
These relationships can form whether a person is single or not, looking for love or not. It just so happens that some times people form bonds when playing mmorpgs for hours on end over long periods of time and find that they have compatibilities in real life. This is what can make the community aspects of xi/xiv so enjoyable, romance or not.
-Having online friends you return to in a game and sharing experiences together in that game environment.
It also just so happens that sometimes those bonds can be romantic. In that aspect it is indeed, just that simple. Some people are completely incapable of forming online romances, but just the same, among the similarities in compatibility that draw a person to play an mmorpg in the first place, there is the possibility that two [and sometimes more than two, oh dear!] people can form genuine connections whether they planned to or not. Of course with that comes the possibilities of all the variables that happen in real life encounters, which means deceit, heartbreak, lies, love, infidelity, friendship, lust, friends with benefits, cyber buddies.. all of that.
The best way for me is to be open about it from the point that I think something like that is starting. Still, some people don't recognize it is happening until it is totally blatant and obvious.
I'm a guy, my character was recreated from my second character in FFXI. (same name and all) My first was a male hume rdm, (Sigurd, later Barthandelus when I transferred from Fairy to Sylph.) but I had a lot of difficulty just getting geared up for my playstyle, so I made a mithra thf to try and make more money ingame. Ironically, the cat's stats worked better for my playstyle, and what was originally meant to be a mule wound up becoming my best, being a hi-lvl character, having all jobs unlocked, and more than half of them between lvs 60-89. (primarily Rng, Nin, Dnc, Smn, and Cor.) When I moved to XIV, I opted to make a Miqo'te since I had become kind of partial to my character in XI.

lol watch that clip
Lol Vina Teelo
Sounds nothing like Vana'diel

Long story short, only shallow people think any of this stuff matters (Trolls use it as bait).
I'll just repost what I said in another thread; I've bolded the important parts:
Some guys do it (play as females) because they know they'll get phat lewtz over other people if they're presumed female. Don't say that preferential treatment nonsense doesn't happen, because it does, and it's terribly degrading to everyone involved.
A player's sex doesn't matter in a video game, but for whatever reason both sides seem to throw it out there like it has merit.
You're either a terrible player or you're not; anything else is irrelevant.
I say place a gender symbol when I use check command on someone. the /blowkiss emote is a gamble.
