List of Changes to the Gameplay of Samurai:
- 5.0
- The Removal of Ageha, an additional sub20% Execution Attack. removed alongside all other Execution Attacks except Ninja's Assassinate* (presumably because it's too iconic of a Skill/Animation to Ninja.. just like Kaiten to Samurai!)
* Assassinate became a 1minute cool down later
- The Removal of Hagakure
5.1
- The Return of Hagakure (with a way shorter cool down)
- Meditation Stack Generation through Iaijutsu, turning Shoha into a way more active skill as it was in 5.0
6.0
- The Simplification of Third Eye rewarding correct execution with 10 Kenki, Simplifyed yet still rewarding!
- Removal of Tsubamegaeshi Meditation Stack Contribution, reducing Tsubamegaeshi to a free Iaijutsu Spam
- Change to Ikishoten acting as an Ogi Trigger for Ogi Namikiri
6.1
- The Removal of Cone Tenka Goken for Circle Tenka Goken
- The Removal of Kaiten, fundamentally destroyed the Identity of the Samurai as a Big Buster Damage Dealer for a Spam for Damage, which only validation is the amount of attacks, not through thoughtful Resource Management
My Point with this list is that we had a lot of Changes that we accepted with Samurai but the Kaiten Removal is too much, even ideologicly.
The Lie of the Devs- I think it's thoroughly disgusting that they state Button Bloat but then "only" removed one Button.. and it happened to be the most import to the Samurai's Identity in FFXIV, that's just great
- In addition: A Lie wouldn't be harmful if no one believes it, yet sadly there are Believers on bothsides
- To clarify!: Merging Guren with Senei and Shoha with Mumyo Shoha, only turns the Samurai into a Dragoon, that's not a solution to aim for!
- My Counterpoint to dismiss "Button Bloat" as a lie is simple: No One had any Problem with Samurai in 6.08
My Suspicions for the Future of Samurai:- if they stick with the Kaiten Removal, Kenki will face a rework because even the devs may notice Kenki's Uselessness (which was caused by the Kaiten Removal)
- maybe they give us Meditation Stacks on lvl52, it's bonus attacks for every Third Iaijutsu
- though I have No Idea how they gonna rework Kenki.. I have the feeling that it won't be better than Kenki Management through Kaiten
Why do I feel that a Kenki Rework won't feel good? Because Kaiten worked, it was a Good Skill to learn and to teach the Priorities of the Samurai, thus creating the Samurai's Identity. The List of Changes so far shows that we stood up with a lot of changes but the Kaiten Removal, which made way to monotonous spam, which I thoroughly oppose. but if we gonna eat the Button Bloat argument.. just put Tsubamegaeshi on Iaijutsu, just like Ogi Namikiri.
My Latest Discoveries regarding the Importance of Kaiten and Samurai Gameplay
Kaiten made Kenki interact with Weaponskills, which granted the Player the Ability to boost Damage on their own. That's the Freedom that Kaiten granted you, to boost every Weaponskill you want, for just 20 Kenki. Just get to 20 Kenki and prepare your next Weaponskills BOOM!
Saying that Kaiten is restrictive is like saying that the Freedom of Choice is restrictive.
Every Job in the Game has Weaponskills,
No Job has an Active Skill that interacts with The Job's Resource to make their Weaponskills Stronger*
*which was Kaiten enabling to
In Order to make the most of it, the Player used Kaiten on the Biggest Weaponskills the Samurai has, which are:
Iaijutsu and Ogi
That isn't possible anymore, all Kenki is there for (as of since 6.1) are just the Filler Attacks like Shinten (for Single Target) and Kyuten (for AoE). For Senei and Guren we have Ikishoten to prepare for. Which contribute for Kenki and in turn Samurai to feel stripped and Empty, and most Samurai who were playing lvl52+ Content felt that!
This is the Learning Curve of Kaiten, to be prepared for the Next Big Weaponskill to make even Bigger! It's Unique to the Samurai and created the Identity to be able to strive for even higher Damage.
Now it's set Damage and the Crit/Direct Hit changes do nothing to give Kenki reason to exist after the 6.1 changes outside of gatekeeping Filler Attacks, which sucks.
If I would comply with the Button Bloat Arguement, My Solution would be to roll Tsubamegaeshi up into Iaijutsu (just how Ninja's Bunshin turns into Kamaitachi), since Tsubamegaeshi doesn't contribute to Meditation Stacks anymore I don't see the reason why it should take up a Button. But combining Shoha with Shoha II and Senei with Guren is not a good Change, Why? because that Skill already exists in the Dragoon's Kit, it's Name: Geirskogul and Nastrond, (while true those Skills are Line AoEs and the Samurai Skills are Circle AoE..) I do not want the Samurai to be redesigned into a Dragoon Circle Jerk. It's The Duty of the Samurai to judge the Situation to determine which Skills to use when, another Pillar of Understanding How the Samurai works.
Further Explaination of My Understanding of the Samurai, Part 4
It is Important to see how the Kit of the FFXIV Samurai emulates real Samurai principles:
Kaiten - Is to utilize the Breath, to breath into every attack to make it stronger
(which is why the Samurai since 6.1 feels so weak, they doesn't utilize the breath anymore to wind up.)
Single Target and AoE Variants that utilize the same resource:
Guren/Senei , Shoha/Shoha II - that emulates the spacial awareness, to see the situation and use the correct techniques to win. When I'm surrended, I rather utilize my resources to hit all my enemies and when I'm in a duel I let hell break loose with strong targetted attacks. There was an oddity brought up, how we only one skill per New Resource.. after thinking about it, I'd say it to emulate the Journey to discover new techniques and perfecting them with the AoE / Single Target Variant in the Next Expansion+ learning something new to repeat the circle of learning and perfecting.
Ikishoten - launched in Shadowbringers, I'd say it's a preparation stance, because Guren and Senei have the same Cool Down so it perfectly lines up+ ikishoten also activates the Ogi Trigger.
Hagakure - it's a Code of Honor of the Samurai and the constant awareness of death, which is why in FFXIV it flushes away all your Sen for additional Kenki. It's in my opinion the more situational brother of Kaiten since Kaiten takes Kenki and Hagakure gives Kenki, through the sacrefice of Sen. (sometime ago I had a conversation with a friend about Hagakure, though in the context of FFXIV it's to have presented as a Skill)
Meikyo Shisui - It's the shortening of Techniques to perform them faster. (Something my Aikido Master showed me long ago)
BONUS - recently I watched a JoJo's Bizarre Adventure Allstar Battle R Super Combo Showcase Video, there my Favorite Character: Gyro Zeppeli used Ogon no Kaiten! ... so you'll tell me.. that my favorite Character, who made me love Pizza Mozzarella also used Kaiten!
