I kinda think we should get like a fish market where you could sell fish to npcs for more gil than the basic sale value with maybe different fish in demand for every day or ability to trade fish for food/other items.

I got my shark today... Neat.
The sad reality is that Square-Enix are too paranoid about inflation to EVER make fish be worth anything. The only fish that actually have any value are the ones you can trade in for levequests, that players leveling their FSH will buy for convenience and faster leveling. Which is ridiculous, TBH.
They need to come up with a new system that makes fishing valuable and worthwhile. At least gathering and mining have ties with many of the crafting jobs. Fishing though? It's a joke. Something to do when you're bored with the game, after you've capped your weekly tomes and done every raid tier, that'll ultimately give you nothing in return. Sad.
Excuse me buddy but they're called "collectibles", and you can exchange them for yellow/white scrips. Oh what's that? You wanted to make ACTUAL GIL with them? HAHA good luck convincing Square-Enix and their paranoid anti-inflation brigade. They're more worried about making sure players don't get more gil from the game/NPCs, than tackling the real issue with inflation - players having too much money but nothing to spend it on.
I can only shake my head at those that can only see ocean fishing being dead content in the future. Can people not see that the current system is set up for expansion with 2 or even 3 more ships?
The Endeavor is the simplest lowest level (and likely lowest scoring) ocean voyage they have planned. They likely intend to have future ships with level requirements to access where getting scores of 10k, 16k and higher and getting the various "What did [Fish type] do to you?" bonuses will be far easier.
Spearfishing may be one the easiest way to get gathering white scripts as the Unspoiled Teeming Waters are easy to spawn and farm for white script fish.
Oh I know, I was trying to be sarcastic. Like, if you try to bring up that idea to SE, I'm pretty sure they're gonna reply with collectibles and how you can trade them for scrips.
Also, what sort of unique items would you like to see being able to be obtained from fishing?
I mean, sure, but whats the point? If the rewards stay in the same vein, its a very short lived content bite by design. Once you get your achievments and leveled fully, it IS dead content. The only long term benefit for doing it is white scrips, which is both extremely unreliable, and low income compared to other sources.
Not to mention that the higher level ones might invalidate the older ones if the mount / title is shared between them.
I mean I liked it, but now that I got my mount, I really don't have a reason to stick with it.
I want to give my perspective on this content from someone who has engaged with it quite a lot. I've managed to get the Ocean Fisher title, have caught 3 of the 4 five-star blue fish, and have earned over 10k points on at least 6 or 7 occasions. While there are things I enjoy about Ocean Fishing and it's probably the most fun I've had with fishing in a long time, I do think there are some problems with it. I haven't read the thread so I'm probably just echoing the sentiments of a lot of people here.
The core problem is of course that the potential for your score is completely dependent on the boat's ability to trigger spectral currents, which is 100% RNG. If a spectral current triggers, you stand to get 2000, 3000, even 4000+ points at a single location depending on your luck and how well you use your GP. If you do not trigger a spectral current, you will probably only manage a few hundred points, maybe 1000 if you are extremely lucky. When you need to finish with around 6000 points to stand a good chance at the mount, not getting currents is simply unacceptable.
Because all the main rewards from this content (the minion, mount and title) are tied to your score in a single trip, players are extremely pressured to try and trigger a spectral current, even though it's pure luck. If you don't get at least two spectral currents in a single trip, then your chances of getting the mount are virtually nil. For the title, you want three spectral currents. You could theoretically get these achievements with fewer currents, but the probability is so low as to not be worth thinking about.
Because of this, if you can't get enough spectral currents then it's ENORMOUSLY frustrating because you've essentially wasted your time, the trip is effectively worthless. The scrip payout isn't great and it's not like the content is fun on its own when the results are completely out of your hands. It's literally like playing a slot machine, just pulling a lever over and over hoping to hit the jackpot. Only if you fail, you've just wasted 25~ minutes of your time and must wait 2 hours to try again. It's so bad that a common strategy is that if the boat doesn't get a spectral current on the first stop, several players simply quit the duty and queue again to get on another boat for another chance.
(It doesn't help that the fish which trigger the currents have an obnoxiously high escape rate, even with my 1889 Gathering stat, tugs which I assume to be spectral fish get away at least half the time, meaning I assume their catch rate is capped at around 50%. This is extremely frustrating especially because these fish take so long to bite.)
When you're continually abused by things that are totally outside your control, it's maddening. Rather than being fun, it makes you absolutely hate the content.
It's hard to simply enjoy ocean fishing for what it is when you're so pressured to maximize your score while being completely at the mercy of RNG. You can't really just chill out and accept whatever happens, because what happens directly affects whether you can reap the rewards of the content. Plus you only have 7 minutes per location to maximize your points, so you are under extreme time pressure and can't afford to waste a single second, which only makes the content more stressful.
After getting all the rewards I'm interested in, I find that the content is actually reasonably fun on its own when you're not concerned about getting 10k or 16k points. But most players aren't yet free of that and will simply get more and more angry as they are continuously beaten down by bad luck.
On top of this, even if you DO have all the rewards already like me, you still want to get spectral currents for several reasons. Firstly, more points means more scrips. The point values of the fish outside spectral currents are so low it's insulting. Secondly, there's not actually much FUN to be had outside a spectral current. You can go for the intuition fish, but this is again 99% luck, your input makes almost no difference. These fish are not even worth much, and the amount of white scrips they award for catching them is truly pathetic considering how hard they are to catch. You can easily get 5-10x that amount with 30 minutes of gathering mining/botany collectables. Inside a spectral current though, there are actually things to pay attention to like trying to isolate the tugs of the high value fish versus the low value ones, and using your GP accordingly. This is what makes the content fun. Outside a spectral current there's nothing to pay attention to since all the fish are garbage, you just keep hooking and hooking and hooking trying to land a spectral.
Imagine if there was a raid where before players could go in and fight the bosses, they first had to win a dice roll game. If they lose, the bosses are locked away and the players must wait 2 hours to try again. How stupid would that be? It's not fun for anyone, all you're doing is holding back people from the good part of the game in an excruciating way. That's basically what Ocean Fishing is like.
There's a few things I think SE could do to help make the content better, but knowing what they are like I expect that nothing will be done, especially so as not to disappoint people who already worked hard for the rewards:
1. The point values of fish outside of spectral currents should be GREATLY increased. They should be worth at least 70-80% of what spectral current fish are worth. This includes the intuition fish.
2. There should be high-value fish outside of spectral currents (besides intuition fish) which skilled players can attempt to isolate to get more points. This makes the overall experience more FUN.
3. Intuition fish should reward WAY more white scrips if they remain at their current rarity. Landing an intuition fish should be worth at least 180 white scrips, more if you get them in HQ. This makes it more worthwhile and rewarding to get these fish, because right now they don't feel worth going for.
and while I think there's no chance of them doing this
4. The main achievement rewards (particularly the mount) should be tied to CUMULATIVE points across all trips, rather than the points earned in a single trip. This would mean that it doesn't really matter if you don't get spectral currents, you will get the rewards if you just keep gradually working towards them. This would be MUCH more fun, MUCH less frustrating and MUCH less stressful for EVERYBODY. There can still be some rewards tied to maximizing points like titles.
Failing that though, they should re-examine the system of spectral currents. Either the chance to proc them should be increased, or the way they are triggered should be changed. Like maybe its tied to total points, total fish caught, or some skill-based thing rather than just being a complete dice roll. I would even go so far as to say it would be fine if any given voyage was guaranteed at least 1 or 2 spectral currents no matter what happens. Because right now this content is just too frustrating for people. You know you've messed up on making something good when people just leave the content part way in because RNG screwed them over.
Switching the achievements to cumulative would be great, because I can only do 1 fishing trip a play session, so soon my window for getting the achievements will rapidly close as people ditch this content. I don't mind grinding for things, so long as i can make slow, steady progress.
Switching it to cumulative would be the best, but drastically upping the rewards of non-spectral fish could potentially do the trick as well. As mentioned in PangTong's excellent post, regular fish outside of spectrals are functional worthless and if you don't get spectral procs then you could be real unlikely and barely scrap 1k.
That can be said for pretty much anything though. Ultimate is pretty much dead content once you've cleared it too. Old Savage-Raids is dead content unless you still want some glamour (but, to be fair, they revived it with BLU a little). How often will you visit the current 5.2 dungeon once it rotates out of Expert Roulette? There are level 50-60 Dungeons I've seen only like 2 or 3 times and spend less time in there then on the fishing boat, because I haven't been around ingame when they were endgame-dungeons.
The issue isn't unique to ocean fishing, but it is a lot more glaring, as it only gives leveling and a few one-off rewards. For instance I often visit the duties you listed for alt gear, tomes and glamour. Ocean fishing gives nothing after dinging 80 FSH and the point rewards.
I mean, even if it gave some guaranteed small amount of white scrips, it would already be enough for some people to join in every now and then.
These are the entry level voyages and mainly added as a way to speed level fishers. Scripts are there so that new fishers have easy access to the level 58/65/70 gatherer gear. Others will be sticking with Endeavor to complete their fishing log and it will be there for all the new fishers to level/gear up with. This is fine. Long term benefits need only be added to any 50+ voyages rather the Endeavor's level 1 voyage.
Which will not happen. Once the Endeavor is out leveled and log completed you moving on is fine as long as the Endeavor still exists for those just starting up fishing. This ocean voyage is not for max level fishers and anyone who thinks so is missing the point. The Endeavor will only get invalidated if a new piece of fisher leveling content is added that gives superior XP and scripts for the same time commitment. HoH does not invalidate PotD, so a higher level ocean voyage will not invalidate the Endeavor. The risk is more that a level 50/60/70 ocean voyage gets invalidated by a level 80 voyage even if all 3 share achievements.Quote:
Not to mention that the higher level ones might invalidate the older ones if the mount / title is shared between them.
The boat adjusts to the number of people that enter with you, so you'll still get a shot at the achievements each time. Had a run the other day with 5 people on the boat (no one left, that was the total the whole run). Three people that run got enough points for the mount.
I am criticizing the current content, not some alleged future one. You seem to have it figured out, but I don't recall them going into great detail on how they're expanding the system later.
If they wanted it to be a leveling only instance, then sure, they succeeded. Doesn't change the fact that it has very little retention rate, and leveling fishers can burn through to max level in a week tops.
Given their history with experimental content such as this, I think its worth pointing out. Might be moot when a new iteration comes out, but until then, its valid feedback.
EDIT: basically its the same as the current state of Ishgard restoration. Sure it might change in the next iteration, but the place became a ghost town in a few weeks (and I'd say it had arguably more to offer than ocean fishing).
I think the biggest disappointment to me has been this isn't working out as a fun social activity as the dev team implied it would be when they encouraged us to queue with our friends.
Normally my FC is a pretty chatty bunch when we hop in Discord to do content together. That was not the case for ocean fishing.
The Discord would go almost completely silent. There were the groans and disappointed sighs as someone missed a catch, had the intuition window close without catching the intuition fish or caught yet another Momora. There was anger when someone got a legendary tug just as the boat changes zone so they never knew what they would have caught.
**Please - don't make it take longer than 30 seconds to catch and hook any fish when there is a hard cut off due to the zone transition.**
There was almost never any moment of excitement to share. Everyone was focused on catching as many fish as possible to maximize their score to get the minion or mount because when they failed to do it, the trip was wasted and they had to start over from scratch the next time. If someone finally got the score needed for the mount, it was "so glad I don't have to do this anymore".
Note that all of this was listed past tense because we're pretty much given up doing it as a group. There was no point when it's a silent, stressful experience instead of a fun social one.
What might change it for the better? As PangTong said, make the point-based reward achievements cumulative instead of trip based. Even if you don't get a great score on one trip, it would still count toward getting that reward in the future instead of being a wasted trip. Everyone would be more relaxed because the time pressure would be removed.
Add in a party scorecard in addition to the personal and alliance scorecards. I don't care how my score compared to RandomPlayer@Balmung. I'm interested in how my score compared to the friends I queued with. It would helpful for creating FC contests with prizes that aren't reliant on getting a top score on the boat (get a final score with a 3 in it? win 50k gil, etc.).
Not related to the social aspect but please change up the desynthesis tables. Getting almost nothing but Fine Sand and Water Crystals has made fish desynthesis very boring. Add in a small chance to get different items from at least the spectral current fish. Untradeable fishing/beach glamours (1-2% chance) and useful crafting materials (5-10% chance unless something rare like Waterproof Cotton Cloth which should be less than 1%) would help in sustaining interest.
Also, there needs to be a more consistent way for level 80 fishers to get white scrip outside of the RNG heavy intuition fish catch. Even getting 3% of the final score as white scrip would help without making it more lucrative than what we get from normal collectible gathering in the same time period.
I've caught multiple spectral fish in one spot never triggered a rainbow. Was kinda mad.
I get that max level folks might not like it- and I certainly support the changes proposed, but I am loving this content. I would never have touched FSH without it and now I am even considering trying to level my other trade skills. Gathering is incredibly time consuming and without it, leveling crafts is cost prohibitive for many people. I wish they had content like this for botany and mining as well. It would really make crafting more accessible to me. Frankly, gathering is so taken over by bots, making content like this to engage people in leveling gathering is incredibly helpful for sustaining your crafting growth and not having to shell out to bots.
They are still pretty easy to level if you take advantage of GC turn ins and leves, though in my opinion Stormblood content is where leves start to really matter. They aren't useless up to that point but I feel that you get more for your time starting then.
As to the topic though I do like the content, but I do think it needs a fair amount of work. A lot of the suggestions I've seen in this thread and elsewhere would be a good start.
After having seen the requirements for the titles, those really should have been just your own count, and over the course of ALL runs in the ocean fishing. That way you have something to work for in the long run, and you don't have to jump through unnecessary hoops if you want the titles. Because I'm sorry, 200 catches in a single instance across your entire party? That's absolute insanity.
The only part of it I dislike is the heavy rng on top of rng. Every run with 1 spectral currant (which has been most of mine) is a wasted trip. You arent finishing any achievement, and theres no worthwhile cumulative achievement, so any time it happens, you just lost 25+ minutes of time.
So I'm starting to get really depressed about these 5-star blue fish. How are people catching them? I've been doing ocean fishing NON-STOP, every waking moment of the day, getting very close to 500k achievement, and have yet to get a single bite on any of them. Right spot, right time, right bait, intuition buff up, getting two casts in each buff, even using surface slap after first cast to increase chances of 5-star biting. Nothing. Gotten probably over a hundred casts during intuitions with everything right and I can't even get a single bite, yet I see people catching these things left and right now that the req's are known? What is going on, cuz I'm about to give up here, and I've never given up on anything fishing related. This is really bad content, man.
I keep trying and keep failing miserably on ocean fishing.. my best personal run had me at 7.3k and everybody else on the boat was between 13k and 17k, I was the only person below 13k on a triple spectral voyage. :(
Even the level 37 who was leveling on the boat ended up with 14k so I have no idea what I am doing wrong. I use the bait that people say to use and double hook during spectrals only but I still ended up getting a horrible score.
My most recent run had me at 1200 and the rest of the people were at 7k+, it has me so frustrated that I have logged off for the rest of the night on both occasions. :(
I am soooo in favor of going to a cumulative system rather than this mess of a system. Its making me hate fishing and to a degree, hurting my desire to play the game. I don't mind RNG but this is hurtful and making me feel awful.
I have all 4 party titles and I hope they'll give us more of similar challenges in the future. It was really fun and satisfying gettting these titles in the end after numerious attempts and hours of frustration, blamig RNG and weather. These titles should belong only to those who went through all this effort to get them and I can see them remaining rare and respectable.
I know fishing is about RNG, so I get why people defend the way it is, but when the entire boat gets either really good RNG or really bad RNG, that's far too broad to be fair. I always think I'm doing crap but I'm always in the top 3-5 in score at the end. I do the best that I possibly can and every time I get screwed. How is that fair? People should be rewarded for their skill, not their ability to play all day every day despite failing every time. No other content is like that. The rest rewards you for being good and learning what you're doing. I could fall asleep while ocean fishing and do just the same as I have been, it seems.
A fair amount of people must be getting lucky too. I've seen more than a few flying around on my server. They might be rare-ish now since the content is new, but I doubt they will be rare at all a month from now. In the few attempts I've made, there has been at least 1, 2 or even 3 people meeting the requirements. I just haven't been one of them, though I was close once. 9785. I think what this piece of content has going for it is the fact that people can level FSH from doing it pretty fast. That will keep it relevant for awhile. That and the easy yellow scrips.
Spectrals really should be more common then they are because there's still a huge amount of RNG involved in getting valuable fish during a spectral current.
The trips don't feel fun if they don't trigger because barring extremely good luck with intuition fish, your score is not going to go anywhere.
Fishing 200 of a specific type of fish yourself isn't a lack of effort. It means more effort is put on yourself, since YOU have to be the one to fish all those sharks, octopodes, jellyfish, and seadragons. Instead of you getting lucky with an instance and with a full party that could get you the title, it's all based on your own hard work. So how about you stop asking for others to carry you to the titles and start asking that it be a singular fisherman's job to get them if they want them.
It will be just an easy, grindy achievement with 1/10 difficulty done in 1 week by anyone. Like numerous existing 'catch X fish in this location' achievements out there. All you would need is to spam a few voyages without ever worrying about lures, weather, food, hi-cordials or maximizing your double hooks. I was personally getting 33-34 sharks per trip, so any comparible as challenging solo version of Shark Hunter would be 'catch 40 sharks in 1 trip', not 'catch 200 sharks ever'.
I enjoy it. However like most have stated, if it doesnt get updated rewards during this expansion then it will become forgotten.
Hopefully before next expansion they will add new routes, fish and prizes. Perhaps long term goals which include glamour, housing items, chocobo barding, etc.
You know what else it would be, less impact on the people not hunting titles because right now there's an issue where some groups of title hunters just up and leave if the RNG isn't what they're looking for. I'm fine with the achievements being made more difficult via an increased volume in exchange for being made solo achievements because folks would be less likely to leave. Ocean Fishing doesn't replenish it's ranks so when several title hunters jump ship...that's a bunch of other people that are now at a disadvantage. I'd rather the achievement get changed than some sort of punishment get handed down.
After I got my FSH to 80, I've been taking 2-3 trips daily in attempt to get the mount. It's been 3 weeks now. I have consistent runs of 2 spectral every time I got into the boat. But getting a !!! to appear during spectral is extremely rare for me. I could count with one hand how much it had pop. The irony is I used to get them more frequent while I was a low level fisher. Only yesterday I managed to double hook 3x !!! in one of the spectral currents. And that nets me with 9.8k points with 70% bonus! T_T (sigh)
It took this long but people are starting to drop out when there's no spectral in the first stop now. I will keep trying in hopes RNGesus will bless me someday.
Make sure you're paying attention to the time of day for each stop. All the big point spectral fish are time-specific as well as bait-specific, so you need to do your research to know what fish you should be going for, as well as what bait they bite on. For fish that have the same bite strength as other fish in the pool you need to know how long their bite times are to know what to double hook as well. Just going in blind and waiting for !!!'s is not going to take you very far. Many of the big point fish are not !!! fish at all, nor do they use plump worms as bait.
This is the go to spreadsheet I use and have seen thrown around most often, and might as well be the "official" guide to what fish bite where when how and how much.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...ring&sle=true#
Well, I gave it another try. I'll forgive it taking a full fifteen minutes to get a group after queuing up since it was 4am at the time. At the first destination we didn't get a spectral current, though we did get one on both of the other destinations. I managed to snag 8855 points in total though it does seem like you need to get a spectral current at all three destinations to qualify for the mount.
Is it possible to see multiple spectral currents at the same destination?
