Age of Consent in Japan is 13. They're not doing anything wrong legally, especially since FFXIV is a Japanese game at heart. Not to mention FFXIV's age-rating going up from 12+ to 18+ with Shadowbringers launch.

Also. For the "it's fictional, so it's okay". Tell that to all the people who have been convicted of owning / collecting underage material made entirely of drawn children. Just because it's "Not real" doesn't mean it's not a red flag to notify the authorities.

You guys should channel all this energy into getting American child beauty pageants banned because those actually impact real children.

I feel like this has become something bigger than it should have been.

Yes they do, but this its own separate yet related problem which doesn't make it any less real. I've had people telling me firsthand stories about how they were groomed into thinking things like this are okay by other adults because this kind of behavior was so normalized.

It's almost impossible these days to shelter younger people these days from things like this, one day they look up some innocent character and next thing you know they're seeing things that they shouldn't be seeing and it's a very bad gateway to get into. I'm sure we can do better than that at protecting these people.

As someone that's pretty allergic to fan service/pandering in anime and other media, I barely even noticed this during the fight. I wouldn't have even thought about it if I hadn't happened upon this giant-ass thread.

Gods and Goddesses (and divine beings in general) are often depicted with little to no clothing in art/literature. Considering the halo that she had by her head, I'm willing to bet that was the look that they were going for and that it wasn't really about trying to sexualize her. Also, knowing what we do about Primals, I think of it more as Shiva and not so much Ryne, but maybe that's just me?

More to the point, I don't remember seeing much more than her shoulders, stomach, and legs. If that's really enough to make some people feel all funny in their pants, then idk. Some of you guys must really struggle when you see Classical/Renaissance sculptures and art.

As others have stated, I think that in this particular case, people are making a mountain out of a molehill. If Ryne starts showing up everywhere in a bikini then sure, I'll raise an eyebrow and wonder what's going on, but I doubt that this will be an ongoing issue.

Other than very few episodes Sailor Moon is never naked after transformation. If it would just be the transformation itself and the outfit afterwards (in savage) would be cute or saint like then there would be less of a problem. Sailer Moon is naked for the transformation but afterwards she wears something which does not show her breasts. Honestly next to the mini skirt all of their outfits are really modest. Ryne is half naked afterwards.

And yet somehow people that want to play underage characters (like those in Rynes or Alphinauds age) are looked down on this very forum and we dont types like that as playable because the devs are completely against it. The worst people could wear would be the beach wear but seemingly thats fine? Anything else will always fall under the lines of mods and its not like SE will ever be able to do something against that.

It's fine if you find it amusing like the OP, but if you actually have a problem with this I would say you're missing some fairly obvious differences.

The model of "Shiva" here only has one context - a fight. All this model will ever do is be a boss for the players to defeat. If they allowed someone to play as a younger character, then it would put that young character in a wide variety of both extant and future scenarios that might not be considered appropriate, especially for the official ratings that the game has already received. Consider the types of things Haurchefant says to and about the player character, for instance. There probably would be no issue at all if you were to outfit yourself in a bikini, but there is a potential issue with situations the game's story and quests put you in. Put simply, the potential problems with young PCs is situations, not showing some skin.

But really, the more cynical answer is that if they can't even figure out how to give viera some hairstyles and hats they're definitely not going to bother with checking twice as many options to have younger versions of every race. They can frame it as whatever excuse they want, and basically it's no different than "PS4 limitations."

This is not true.

The Children Welfare Act chapter 34 states that anyone 18 or older can not engage in fornication, harlotry or obscenity with minors. It is an overriding law in Japan that protects children from sexual abuse. Source

I am not familiar with law, but I do know that some laws act as a baseline, with the "minimum age of consent is 13" Japanese Penal Code serving as one in this case, and can be overridden with other laws.

Not too keen on her Hydaelyn form. The skintight suit parting for a boob window looks tacky, just like Ultimecia's.

Honestly, japanese companies don't really submit to the SJW, at least any I heard of.

Its the Western studio's that do more often than not, and its a dang shame because those people are not even the consumers of their product, the gamers are and they are the ones paying for it, because a bunch of SJW are crying about a girl breast being too big or dress being to revealing or heck, even if the girl is too pretty.
Its why ((at least imo)) most female characters in western games are usually ugly as heck compared to japanese games.

I'll admit, I didn't notice how low the neckline went when ShivaRyne transformed into HydaelynRyne at first, mostly because I was too busy trying to not get sundered like Zodiark was, as a tank. While I did notice her outfit was somewhat revealing as Shiva, and I was a bit caught off-guard by it, I see it more as Ryne channeling Shiva a la the Kurain Channeling technique from Ace Attorney, in that the spirit, or in this case, the power/primal, physically affects her.

So while Ryne is the vessel, I see it as not being her at the same time, but Shiva affecting her not only mentally, but also affecting her body, aging her up in a sense. While western players are most definitely not used to seeing outfits like that, the fact Yoshi-p allowed this in the game, seems, to me, that it's not as bad as people are making it out to be. It's still somewhat unsettling, for sure, but her Shiva outfit draws elements from both Ysayle and Ryne's outfits. Not sure what part of a giant crystal/cave painting the plunging neckline came from though.

Or maybe that was Eden.

I do not think she is ugly, her face fits her voice actress and character (personality) perfectly. If you want to talk about peebee, I think she fits perfectly with her character too - a tomboy who gets in trouble often. To get some perspective play the series from 1-Andromeda and you will see no real huge changes with their general armor or character designs. Again, in certain cases they actually got sexier Ashley Williams in 1-2 and her big redesign in 3. This isn't even to mention EDI If we are talking about themes sure, like writing.
