I was in a dungeon and it's the first time since i play FF14 that i /followed a dps cause i was bored to cast 1 damn single dot on 5 diffrent targets + my dps was so weak, i was just wasting my time.

So i autofollowed someone and my fairy has done all the heal job and it worked.... next time i'll watch Lucifer while my toon will play alone. It's just pathetic.

Scholar has mana issues but it isn't that bad. Why is everyone being so over dramatic? If they want to make us balanced they just need to lower the cost of our skills a tad and give us an aether dump. And Aetherflow outside of combat but I feel like that one they are gonna stand firm on to keep us from getting extra stacks in a fight.

Heavensward Bard all over again. Guess I'm not playing Scholar for the next 2 years.

That would be a good idea. Atleast if they want to streamline, give every healer a castable AoE or Single DoT like Aero 3 or Miasma. And please fix AoW. My brother is so angry about that skill he even uses it as a meme. It doesn't fit any looks horrible.
My brother was testing SCH today in DRs and after 1 Alliance Raid and DG he almost felt like stopping because it was just terrible. He was bored, he dmged over 90% of the time and did nothing else. The fairy was gone unnoticed and he even said that it doesn't matter anymore if she is there. After that he tested AST and WHM and they felt better. SCH is so horrible that he even thinks about hiding the job icon because he can't see SCH atm.
SCH was so killed by SE. SE seems to not know why SCH players play it. It's the fun of being able to DPS, manage DoTs, manage the fairy and be a tactician in the fight. What is SCH now? Nothing, nothing of it. You do nothing. I can understand people who do not lvl as SCH or even log off until changes come. Because how can you enjoy the MSQ with a job you loved which is pruned to death?

What was SE thinking btw about "balancing" and not bringing a 4th heal instead? This is balancing?? This is killing the jobs and the lore.
If they don't reverse a lot of changes, for example make the fairy a pet again and not this heal turret, DPS kit and AoW visual gone please and make it a DoT like Miasma 2, then I really don't know what will happen, maybe Healer in Need will be throughout ShB and there will be no SCHs there.

I tried to keep myself interested but I'm just going to stop at lv 74 on the MSQ and level Gunbreaker or something. At least that feels fun. They introduced QoL problems to SCH and AST (but they're at least addressing the queue problem on Play).

I'll use them for roulette fodder for crystals but that's it.

Piety just sucks in general, it's Tenacity 2.0

Not enough to make any type of difference.

600 mana every 3s out of combat with 1264 and 360 piety

250 in combat with 1264 piety.

202 in combat with 360 piety.

A whopping 48 mp every 3 seconds with almost an extra 1000 piety.

Tenacity used to be Parry. It was widely seen as useless before the change because of 1) how random it was and 2) how little it mitigated. After the change, you needed so much Tenacity to equal 1% of damage mitigation that it wasn't worth it to gear for it.

Just give us Energy Drain back. Let us do something with our excess Aetherflow stacks. The one we had with Stormblood, the new ED for SMN works differently now.

SCH ED = Deal damage and increase the Faerie gauge by 10. With or without the MP drain if it does/doesn't break the new MP management balance.

ED would also make Dissipation more useful as well.

I believe tenacity early in the patch cycle was seen as okayish, particularly for prog, but as soon as crit/det/dhit started scaling up, its relevance waned massively. But really, all secondary stats make such a little difference overall that it's kind of a pathetic joke, as this post shows. I've never really seen the point of them beyond worthless min-maxing (and yes, I still meld because it's what is expected of me, regardless of my personal thoughts about secondary stats being garbage).

Because "MUH DEEPS" would be my guess. The changes to SCH are nowhere near as bad as people are making them out to be. My WHM friend is reporting the same with WHM, and my AST friend, while disappointed in the cards, says the job isn't that different from before.

What possible benefit is there in not allowing me to refresh Aetherflow between pulls!?!? And it takes a full second before the game realizes that combat has started, so if it was still on cooldown at the end of the last pull, and I was out of stacks, I can't open with an aetherflow spell. How is this better!?!?

The dps of all three healers is pretty much the same as before. In sholars case it just got reduced to 2 skills (1 in aoe situations). Which such an amount of reductionary changes it was to be expected that players who liked the job before are disappointed.

Also the dps uptime didn't change in any way in the new dungeons.

Absolute clunk, no fun no damage, and the fairy isn’t even targetable in the party list nor can it even be prompted through macros to use Embrace on the same target as me. Really the epitome of fun now Yoshida, thanks.

They need to give us back at least energy drain and the ability to use aetherflow outside of combat asap cuz rn the class plays like a hot neutered mess. I’ve seen numerous more ASTs in DF than I have SCHs and seeing how badly AST was also handled that’s really saying something.

The lack of energy drain makes it super unpleasant to play (as mentioned by everyone else). I feel like if they don't want SCH to sacrifice stacks to dps, why not make dps linked to heals in some way? Like critting a heal allows you to do some sort of dps thing. Really, SCH needs SOMETHING to give it its own identity and make it fun to play.

The majority of my cohealers have actually been SCHs. I was just assuming that it was SMNs who wanted a faster queue. But I haven't seen many ASTs myself.

After playing through this early weekend, I think bringing back two things would help the most. We should be able to use aether flow OOC again and we should have ED back. Distant third would be to return bane, allowing it to spread our dot. That would give us the "AoE" dps option for an aether charge dump. Don't need Miasma 1&2 back, don't need SF. But something to burn AE charges and build that fairy gauge would be nice, without invoking a cooldown when people are at full health.

Granted the new dungeons and content are pretty good about not getting you breathing room, if you're undergeared. But hell, I ran the first dungeon in Anemos gear and didn't have an issue. Including the weapon. Once I actually have a slotted set of 390+, it'll be even easier.

It saddens me that people are leveling SCH to 80 and are trying to make it work. You can try all you want, the job is dead. And don't even think about trying to do savage raids when the get released.

SCH won't have any problem in savage raids performance wise, it's pretty powerful.

I leveled SCH to 76 before I couldn’t take it anymore. The class is incredibly boring. Who on earth thought having one main damage spell and a dot would be fun let alone fine when you’re soloing msq instances or job quest. Even the new healing spells feel to similar to be anything unique.
At least I was excited to see Lily get an upgrade but now I’m disappoint. I still wish Eos and Selene evolved in their own unique ways but yay for potential fairy glams?
Idk, SCH is such a mess now. Seeing the Healer in Need for roulettes is extremely telling.

Not gonna repeat what many said, I agree that the changes so far are pretty bad in almost all aspects of the class except healing potency, which is pretty good.

If SE really wants us to not use Aetherstacks for Dpsing, I think they should have give us a different way to spend then when needed. If ED is not an option, either some small utility like Increase Damage or reduce received damage for a very short period of time my have been interesting. If it needs to be only healing, maybe a small instant shield that can also be stacked with Adlo and can be spammed quickly to reduce the amount of aetherstack when needed. While you cannot heal more that the maximum health, at least you can reduce the incoming damage, while still retaining job identity. Also perhaps change the DPS a bit to differentiate it from the other healers. If it must be simple, make it so we have only one Instant GCD spell (make Broil III instant but with less potency) and change Ruin II to a DoT spell. While not necessarily more fun, I think that it will help gain more identity to the class if they manage 2 DoTs with a single spammable damage spell, making weaving without losing DPS easier, but having to be more vigilant of both DoTs. This mean that they have more mobility too (not that they lack now), so that could be its strong point compared to the raw power of WHM. I think these two changes would go along the "not DPS" philosophy of SE while still making the class feel less clunky. There are almost certain better ways to improve the class without reverting it back to SB, I'm just not that knowledgeable or creative to come with them, but you catch my drift.

I feel there are actually numerous ways of making the class feel fun to play without resorting to DPS, but SE seemed like they didn't care.

I've played SCH for 6 years and I will keep playing it because I am a loyal fool, at least until they shatter faith in fixing this current problem. Many times has SE changed things or given me what I felt were lackluster skills compared to the wham glam of the new AST or what not, but I always enjoyed my core class. I originally hated my arcanist, but as I gained levels I began to feel the identity of the class form and SCH was even better. I wasnt just a healer, I was a strategic mastermind who had to think about how to weave my heals and dps together, and I had little downtime. It was fun, engaging, impactful. Im only level 72 now but I can say that not once since the patch have I felt like I was playing a SCH. The heals are powerful yes, but I feel like I have had a leg and an arm chopped off without so much as a crutch to move on with. Its awkward, off balance, just wrong feeling. But most of all its BORING! I dont do ANYTHING except pound a heal key, whats the point of dps? it sucks up too much mana and has negligible damage. I realize that SE might be thinking of balance for end game raids and such, but I could care less if its boring. I felt much the same way as when WoW did Cataclysm and that was the expansion in which I lost all interest in WoW. So I'll give SE time, and I hope they hear the voices of everyone on this. The class is still functional, but it is such a boring and lame thing to play, so why play it when more interesting and fun classes exist.
I cant help but feel like this is all to help the level skip players be able to play the class, but its us long time mains who have spent years mastering this class who should be heard. Complexity and mastery is a fun mechanic, simplicity and complacency is only for the get rich quick.

Return ED, we need an aether dump and imo better mana recovery.
Return Bane and Shadowflare. They didnt do too much damage but they were fun to use and see
Give us back the ability to command our fairy, that was what made me choose SCH to start with.
Another DoT would be nice but thats more personal preference.
in a nutshell, let the classes have unique idenity and gameplay and not cookie cutter us all.


These are the humble opinions of a casual but long playing SCH main.

Also, I think it would be interesting to discuss MP management. The issue right now is that we have two options: spam DPS spells and run out of MP or do no or very little DPS to avoid running out. I think is perfectly fine for WHM to be the healer with the easiest and more efficient MP conservation, but the issues is this: the alternative to not running out of MP is to not do anything. This is the issue many of the people that seem to ignore right now. We have no MP managing mechanics to attend to beyond Atherflow and Lucid Dreaming. Nothing. Just picture it, do nothing but wait to heal people, specially awful if there is no really much healing needed because the tank is mitigating effectively. Just poping oGCD heals or on or two GCD spells and then wait, perhaps a dot. And we don't even have to go to extreme situations. If you decided to play the best you can, fill the void with as many spells you can, you will be punish. If I had to compare it to something, it would be like DPS having to slowdown so they don't take the Tank aggro without way to avoiding such situation. While not the exact same case, it is equivalent in the sense that you have to stop yourself from playing your class as optimally as possible to not be screwed.That feels terrible.

Here the flaw of SCH design is pretty obvious. While being simplified, they also lost tools used to manage their MP while upping their spells cost so the focus is on oGCD heals. It actually make the class be incomplete in the sense that there is no way to play optimally, no way to avoid the 0 MP situation. And the solution seems to be sadly to reduce MP costs or buff MP recovery. Yes, I said sadly, as this will be the only solution possible that fits SE current Healer design: instead of making MP management a more significant part of the job to give it more engaging gameplay, forcing you to play tactically, it would make the class harder to play, and therefore SE won't never introduce such changes. Also really doubt they will make big changes mid Expansion anyway.

Couple changes would like to see for sch;

1) Just give Energy Drain and the aetherflow trait, they'll help out with current sch issues like; mp, aetherflow dump, and dps.
2) I understand aetherflow having in combat only (to par with whm lilies) but please remove in combat on aetherpact, screws with dungeon flow especially when dungeon agro/combat is a bit wonky, even if tank pulls healer isnt in combat till they heal or hit. Use to using aetherpact as tank pulls, also personally dont see any reason why its combat only in the 1st place.
3) Seraph, more of a future change but overall Seraph is just a glorified fairy heal buff... Slightly improved heals is such a horrible incentive, would like to see something else rather than just better fairy heals. Selene's old aoe esuna and Eos' old speed boost would be nice, or just give a passive aoe buff 2-3% damage dealt while she's out...

Elegantly put, fix both issues in one go.

Healer re-balancing equated to excessive skill redundancy and a refusal to implement moderately interesting dps rotations.
At this rate I dont expect a new healer in 6.0 given they cant mange to create 3 uniquely playing ones.

I dont want to count myself as a good SCH. I only picked it up as my go-to healer at the end of SB. But here's my two cents.

1) Let me see my fairy in combat. Removing it from the party list but allowing chocobos to remain in the party list? Removing its name in combat DESPITE having the setting to allow it's name to be displayed while in combat? I hate losing where my fairy is if I'm constantly having to place it in range for its abilities.
2) MP in AoE. Art of War is cool and all in name, but man it hurts to use it too much.
3) Aetherflow. Not being able to use it outside of combat makes SCH feel so clunky that it pains me, especially since combat is triggered when you either attack an enemy, or heal the tank after they pull. Delaying me being able to play is poor design IMO.
3a) Not having anything to spend aether on besides healing spells? I'm okay with that. Not 100%, but I get what SE wanted to do. But when you're sitting on one or two stacks when there's no healing going out and aetherflow is either far off from using again, or about to be? Feels bad. Why'd quickened aetherflow trait have to be removed?
3aa) If Aether abilities fuel the fairy gauge, it'd make sense to me to want to use more aether abilities to fuel more fairy gauge. All of which is done for healing, right? So why are SCH being punished for using their abilities too much? Either I sit on stacks, or burn through them too quickly, and have to dissipate to get more stacks for more healing... except the fairy's gone while dissipate is up so I have to wait for the fairy to come back just to use the fairy abilities? SCH needs a way to spend aether when healing isn't needed.
4) Fairy abilities being treated as oGCD player abilities. This makes no sense for SCH. Being able to prep a heal, cast it, and while casting it order Eos to use Fey Illumination was satisfying to pull off those embiggened heals. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't SCH supposed to co-function with their fairy, not order it around like a SMN pet?
5) Biolysis. Instead of giving AST an AoE DoT, they... take away from WHM and SCH their AoE DoT? This beggars belief.
5a) Bane. Not having an AoE DoT is... painful. I hate tab targeting each mob individually to apply Biolysis to help mobs die if I'm busy casting a GCD heal. Being able to deal damage to every enemy passively if I have to use a GCD heal helps the party and the dungeon clear more smoothly.
5b) Shadowflare. Sacred Soil can still not be used while another field effect spell is in use... which there is no other one now. What? Removed to reduce button bloat maybe? I don't feel like I wouldn't be able to find room for it on my hotbars if it were still around or readded. Plus that it was passive damage that was only effective as long as the enemy was within its area of effectiveness.
6) Succor. Why does Sacred Soil no longer have a chance of proccing a free succor? Would it be because having SS as a HoT while popping a free succor shield to boot is too powerful? Why actively nerf a healer's ability to heal?
7) Largesse. Why? Why was this removed? Break had its uses for me on RDM if I died, but I get why it and most of the other role spells were axed. But Largesse? If you want healers to focus on healing more, why take away an ability that made them BETTER at healing??
7a) Repose. In overworld content where it would be used, the cast time is too long I feel. Beyond which, just keep running from the enemy til it deaggros you anyway. Why would I want to stop, cast a long casting spell, just to sleep a mob to keep running when I can keep running to wherever I am going? Waste of time. Dungeons? Everyone is using their AoE/damaging abilities so literally pointless and useless. Bosses? See dungeons. Raids? If it's going to wind up like the Omega raids did... refer to dungeons. If it were to be reworked to act as an interrupt, that would be cool. Having interrupts on Tanks/Ranged Physical is nice and all, but if anyone would want to interrupt an enemy from doing more damage a healer makes sense to me. Just make this an interrupt spell that shares a cast speed with physick/cure/benefic.

That's all I can think of, but man. Taking SCH through the MSQ has not been enjoyable in the slightest.

I've been having fun with it tho tbh. Almost 80! I think there is a lot of room for improvement but like 100% they are gonna add something back to the kit. I've mained this since launch and I believe they always give back to SCH at least if they do take away. It just takes a bit of time.

The changes are startling. It shifted from an icredibly fast paced healer with engaging DPS abilities to a really really slow snooze fest. If you try to always be casting you run out of MP so you can't even try to make the boring dps rotation fun. Fates make me angry because all you do is DPS but Lucid and Aetherflow can't handle the drain. I won't say that Energy Drain needs to come back but something similiar needs to be there even if it only gives MP to sustain your DPS and doesn't do damage or restore health. I realized that they are trying to force us to use Physick more to counter the huge cost of every other spell and that is also why Aetherflow can't be used outside of combat and the Quickened Aetherflow Trait was removed. The old system gave us a lot more Stacks to use and now hard casted heals are a more important part of the kit... But nothing about this is fun. It is easier I admit since you aren't weaving Lustrates and Indoms between DPS abilities as much but even though Scholar functions amazingly well as a healer it is just NOT FUN at all. The only positive I have seen is that the fairy tops any party member who's taken damage off instead of waiting until they are below 80%. I wish the fairy didn't constantly unsummon itself and disappear tho. Without it being in the party list I have to zoom in and look for it way too often since I can't target her. This creates so many issues. Marking my fairy isnt possible anymore and that really helped people stay in range during hectic fights where we were seperated. More than anything though Tanks were done so well. They feel unique and engaging while none of the healers feel that way. WHM feels alright but Scholar and Astro feel so dead to play. They are easier to learn but I can't have fun on them like I can Tanking. Something has to give. Scholar is lacking the tactical planning and high speed gameplay that constantly bounced between healing and dps. MP cost needs to be addressed somehow and at least one more DPS option to seperated it from the other healers is needed. Bane, Shadow Flare, Another Dot anything. Just make it more engaging. Nothing feels more dumb than spamming a dot and a filler spell in a fate and running out of MP while using Lucid and Aetherflow on Cooldown with no need to use a single healing ability so you just overwrite the stacks constantly and still have to wait for your MP refresh. It's really bad design.

People have already said it far better than I could but here are my two cents.

I don't think the new scholar is bad as a healer. The job isn't broken and it will most likely still continue to do well. But the main drawback is that it isn't fun anymore. Any form of control and decision making has been mostly removed. Every dungeon I have run after 70 feels like I am level synced and run Sastasha. Sure this is phrasing it a bit overly dramatic but this is how I feel.

Since other people already went over most of the abilities I just want to comment on something that I don't see discussed often.

I really am not a big fan of not being able to tell my fairy who to cast embrace on anymore. This feels so counter productive. Yes their simplified it but it wasn't necessary.
People who didn't want to put up with having extra control over the fairy didn't have to and the people who love to micro manage everything still could. I really don't get why this was taken away.

This is far and beyond the worst state healers have been in since the launch of the game. Even healing as a cnj/thm in 1.0 was more enjoyable than it is now. They managed to go from being the mmo where healing was far more fun and complex than pretty much any other mmo out there, an mmo where healers were actually not in that short of supply because of how fun and engaging they were, to now having the most boring and simplified design that I've seen in years.

I'm glad that I leveled everything to 70 in Stormblood, because I won't be playing as a healer anymore. Those days are dead and gone.

Yeah it's pretty obvious that they need to add something. The job doesn't feel complete.

It's just very disappointing that it was released in this state. It feels as if they didn't spend as much time on scholar as on other jobs. It's not like the issues are very intricate.

Other then naming it Sublimation out of a strong desire to reference ffxi scholar, this is the exact kinda thing I'd rather see added to the class. I'd be slightly worried about the amount of MP restored being too powerful, but otherwise this is nice.

Just adding my two cents now that I've hit max and had some time to process it all.

As with others, main takeaway is that Sch is now Exceedingly Boring.

I found that my enjoyment came not from playing Sch, but figuring out the changes (which passed quickly) and from the story-line and new dungeons. As I'm a solo player who doesn't care to maximize exp, most of my time was spent spamming dungeons. Most of my time in dungeons was spent spamming Art of War after briefly dotting most mobs up. That's boring. There's no pay off. Even the routine "Dots up + Bane" actually felt semi-rewarding each time you pulled it off, because it has a set-up + pay-off attached to it. Spamming Art of War with Lucid Dreaming up requires no thought at all.

The new approach to healing is something I think I can see? It's hard to tell now, honestly. People are still getting used to skills/etc so a lot of the healing is likely to go away as players get more streamlined. If it sticks around, I think that's fine.

But Sch as it stands is boring. Your optimization comes from rote-memorization with 3 buttons involved now.

Let me tell Eos whom to heal :( and whomever decided to make Aetherflow combat only needs to reevaluate why they chose to involve themselves with Sch design.

SCH isn't even remotely fun anymore, especially in dungeons. Either I'm scraping the bottom of the barrel and am completely out of aetherflow trying to heal the tank or I'm casting broil/art of war over and over again while overriding a stack of three unused aetherflow with three more because I have no mana and don't want to stand there doing nothing.

That's just a tiny taste of the problems with this redesign.

What were they thinking?

That's the issue. The Exceedlingly Boring element of it is purely a matter of opinion and preference. You have folks like me who are used to the more streamlined rotation and dont mind and even prefer it, from my own perspective the job feels about the same, you're still leaning on ogcd heals, and utilizing shielding and damage mitigation preemptively. It was just streamlined. One dot of a decent potency does the same job of two dots of a lower potency. As for the aoe, we did take losses in total potency but our kit is more streamlined. AoW is more expensive then Holy and Gravity but it's also stronger and instant cast.

But that's the other problem. What some people see as nuance and complexity can also be seen as clunkyness and needless busy work to others. As fun as it is to debate and discuss ultimately it's going to be futile no matter what the devs do. You're either going to please the people who want complexity and alienate everyone else, or you're going to please the everyone else and alienate those who want complexity.
