Where did the Lalafell hate originate?

Personally, it was initially because of Lolorito and Teledji...and much later Yuyuhase. I literally wanted to strangle those little muppets. Plus, as an Elezen at the time, I was always worried that if I offended Lalas, they would try to bite my kneecaps (old joke from FFXI). Even having several friends who played as Lalafell was not enough to convince me otherwise.

Then I met Cocobusi and his brothers, Pipin, Wedge, Tataru, the mining twins (I forget their names now) and of course Nanamo and they greatly realigned my dislike towards that race.

So yeah...I'm fine with what they are; and as for the people who play them, it boils down to the person's innate character not the Lala race itself.

I've never agreed with the idea that Miqo'te are inferior to Mithra, but I absolutely feel that way about Lalafells compared to Tarutaru. With their updated look, I can neither find Lalafells cute nor take them seriously. With Tarutaru, I could do either, depending on the situation. Whenever I see a Lalafell I just lament at how much better they could be.

It's not that race dictates behavior, it's that people who act certain ways are drawn to certain races. -shrug-

Oh, it goes back even before Teledji and Lolorito. The pragmatic, warmonger ways of the Lalafells is how we have Ul'dah in its current state. There is no worse enemy to a Lala than another Lala. So if you want to look at the originations of their hate, you don't even have to inquire outside their own race. Lorewise, anyway. Even the current Sultana became so at a very young age due to her parents dying in a horrible "accident", and oh how easily is a young mind manipulated. Everyone knows their deaths were no accident, and everyone discretely points their implicating finger in the same direction of a particular potato.

I think the general stigma towards Lalas ties more into just poking fun a them than actual hatred. If there is any hate there though, I would say their history in Eorzea definitely influences it. And how adorable the lot of you are really only makes the throat stabbing worse!

A few years ago, I made my main character and tried to play this game. This lasted all of a week and here I shall explain why:

On this last fateful day of play, I zoned into the Ul'Dah Aetheryte Plaza, whereupon I could hear an endless shrill sound, akin to the shrieks of innocent creatures being slaughtered, whilst enduring the lengthy loading screen my poor computer, in its Frankenputer dotage, experiences. I walked away during this loading, to make a nice cup of tea, and when I came back with delicious beverage, the annoying sound had not ceased. I steered my character away from the Aetheryte, only to discover the maddening sound was following me. "But why?" I wondered, "To what end does this incessant squealing assault and plague me? Oh Gods, make it stop!" It was then I looked down and to my horror, witnessed a small, potato-like creature gesticulating at me, painful ululations emanating from its tiny maw, chilling every fibre of my being! Wherever I went, it followed, signalling and bewailing its malicious intent. I could not escape! This monstrous creation, I latterly learned, was known as a "lalafell", and these terrors were borne like locusts upon the night into habitations all over Eorzea, terrifying the locals with such keening as this. For the nonce, I did the only thing I could:

I contacted support, blacklisted the eldritch abomination, and acquired a distaste for all things lalafell thereafter. I also quit the game until earlier this year.

I don't actually hate lalafells, I even have one as an alt. I also think Tataru is the one true god, and it's just a matter of time until we're all bowing down:

Ph'nglui mglw'nafh Tataru R'lyeh wgah'nagl fhtagn! (but not really, she doesn't fit in that sense).

There's the lore, in-game stuff, people playing the race being awful or just degenerate.

Depends on experiences among other things.

If you met with so many jerks, maybe the problem is with you, not with lalafell players.

I think associating a race as a point of a problem is just too short sighted. In my opinion there have always been jokes made about lalafels but it's always meant to be in good-natured fun. I can see where a player might reasonably see that there is a lot of lalafel hate if you haven't been exposed to the culture of XIV as long as some of the other folks.

I don't hate Lala's in fact I like them quite a bit, surrounded by potatoes, onions and carrots in my roasting pan.

Lalafell "hate" is just good natured ribbing just like Gnome Punting was a thing in Everquest and World of Warcraft.

I don't hate lalafell or those who play one but I'm a little creeped out personally. To me, they look like children, sound like children and emote like children. They sort of waddle around like toddlers. Cute, right?

Yet... some of the lewdest and dastardly NPCs in the game are lalafell. Adult mind, toddler body? I find it a little questionable but hey, that's why I don't play one. To each their own.

I've found that Lalafells are usually very good players - anecdotal, but it seems to be a regular occurrence for me when they show up.

Anything dealing with the founding of ul'dah. lv 30 and 50 cul quests. Oh yeah being part of the few who knew what was going to really go down at Baelsar's wall. Along with probably having a hand in the "accident" that killed Nanamo's parents.

Yeah SE was always heavy handed with which lala was the douche. It was clear for most of the time that Lolorito cares but is a businessman through and through. Teledji was just evil.

Every race has its evil members. Every race has its irresponsible members. Every race has its asshole members. No exceptions here. But that don't means that some race as whole can be labeled as "evil" or "good". That's just prejudice towards race.

But why you don't label hyurs as evil when Yotsuyu was sold to slavery, but you do label lalafells as evil because Pipin was sold to slavery?

Because while every race has its evil, for most races "evil" ppl are the outlier but for lala its the norm. You can always find exceptions to the rule like Yotsuyu for hyurs or Krile in the case of lala :D :D :D

Reading your posts though throughout this thread I think you are taking it way to seriously...another reason the lala taunting has gotten as far as it has.

For me, personally, I don't outright hate Lalas as a race. What I dislike is how some (key word there) people are so adamant about Lalas being cute that if you so much as show a sign of disagreement then you are somehow wrong, without question, and meanwhile I don't find Lalas cute at all (I prefer the Calca and Brina dolls, and Scathach, myself).

Beyond that, it's all too easy to make jokes at the expense of Lalas. But that's what they're intended to be - jokes. I can only hope that the jokes I make and share don't come across as malicious, as blunt and sassy as I can sometimes also be.

Also, yes, I'm perturbed at the number of Lalas that give us trouble in the story, main or otherwise. Even Tataru gives us trouble when she's one of the protagonists (to say nothing of her cheating ways when she used to play Triple Triad).

Lore-wise, they did descend from the Mhach, who were behind the War of the Magi that led to Nym's destruction and the Shroud's flooding. So there's that. <_<

Lalafels hit the point of Uncanny Valley to me in a way that just... makes them.. Creepy.

They have that intense and constant Child-like cutesness that just...continues... They dont grow out of it. It's like they're some freaky children's doll that came to life.
The worst thing about it is the idea that they are, indeed, ADULTS. I don't know, they just hit that uncanny childishness that makes them incredibly uncomfortable to be around, especially if you happen to find those ones that like to brag about their perverseness openly...like the gross little guy in Costa and his weird, creepy sister from the summer events.

At least with races like Dwarves, they grow in to an adult-looking humanoid.. but Lalafel... always look like children / creepy dolls. And i hate it.

Oh I know, but the person I was replying to made it look like lalafells don't have any bad apples. Also the majority of the Ul'Dah council are lalafells who all tried to kill Godbert at some point. We just don't have enough info on some of the past nations or single characters even from 1.0 to point out the various missdeeds of Lalafells. I'm not denying that hyur n elezen have a lot of bad apples.

Everytime I say people saying stuff like "let's sacrifice a lala" or something, I reply saying "let's sacrifice a furball or a lizard then"

I know the drill, but it kinda annoy me. In lore terms I wonder why lalafells are the aristocrats while fu... miqotes and other races are working for them.

Also, lalafells like tropical climate.

I dislike Lalafell on two merits. Firstly the forced cute demeanor while trying to also come off as mature at the same time. I find it very annoying and disingenuous particularly when i have seen many play up up-skir/ inappropriate erp... Secondly and most importantly. I hate that they are used for showcasing gear.... When models are deformed and textures smashed together the gear preview isn't much of a preview.

This I have to agree with wholeheartedly. I've always liked my characters in all MMO to be tall so I can see all their gear properly... I'm tall in real life so that must be one reason.

Don't hate Lalas at all, I think they can be rather cute. But some lala players can get over-zealous with that counter-hate toward other races. That's what I don't like.

Lalafell players are pretty much the only ones that seem overly invested in their character's race. Most of the time the "hate" are just jabs for fun. Like, most folks don't like pineapple pizza. They don't hate it or have any sort of ill will. Now throw in a friend that loves pineapple pizza and always brings it up. The friend already knows everyone else doesn't like pineapple pizza but they wanna keep trying anyways. In comes the "ew man, pineapple on pizza is gross" or "get some better taste in pizza." None of which are meant to hurt said friends feelings. Most of the negativity is geared towards the pizza and not the person. It's up to the person to see that and not be a sensitive baby.

In regards to lalafells it's pretty much the same. Most folks don't really care, another portion have formed negative opinions because players and characters in the game, and then there's the devote lalafellians singing their praises every chance they get. Most folks just like seeing if they can get rise out of people. If they don't outright have a fit it's generally considered acceptable ribbing. Like constantly poking fun at a friends main class, see dragoons and rezzmages. I've playfully called my friend an onahole on occasion.

I honestly assumed most folks understood that it was all in good fun. Like, I've seen folks getting offended because "oh no he made fun of lalas" before. Kind of assumed that was an outlier and the folks that took it seriously were pretty rare.

No problem. I think with the emotes they get noticed more when it's that one female lala voice. It's so distinct from the others that it's right up there with the cat girl voice a lot of people have a problem with. So when you hear the emote that shouts to anyone around that yes I chose THAT voice people zoom in on it and then notice the spam and mentally wish they could punt the offender. The person could be really nice, but that voice tosses that out the window.

For a long time i despised lala's, reason being 2 particular players. One was kind of the mother of all trolls and the other player was evil incarnate a vindictive a'hole.
Also the emote spamming lala's grate on my nerves.
My hate has softenend a bit after meeting a very decent caring player using a lala avatar.

But I like lalafells, especially for breakfast.

I just found a lot of lalas annoying. Not just players, but the NPCs through out the game/story too. That is not to say all players that enjoy their little potato are annoying/bad/whatever else, just a lot of what I've ran into myself. I've a few friends in game that play lalas and I'll poke at them for it, but that's about it. On a different note, I think Tera also left a sour spot on me with 95% of the population being those child like girls wearing some questionable things, so maybe a bit of it stems from there. Given the choice, lalas are 10000 times better lol.
