No, they won't. Dedicated DPS are gearing up too. I'm so sick of tank damage being compared to bad DPS, as if to say all tanks are DPS masters and all DPS are filthy plebs.

Also at full i240 +a8s weapon with melded accessories DRK/WAR AP is only going to be 1086 (41 points higher than 3.1 i210 STR). Granted we'll deal a lot more damage than that number suggests due to inflated Det, etc. But again DPS are seeing these same gains across the board.

For comparison, DRG at the same ilvl will have 1319 STR/AP.

Who cares about them? The issue at hand is that with that 1086 AP, all the old tricks are going to come back into play. If the goal of the nerf was to eliminate stance dancing as the preferred playstyle to keep tank dps from gating content, then they failed. The world firsts are all going to come from the same groups using the same tactics as last time.

Tank damage was nerfed.
But after ensuring your survival, you should still be maixmizing the damage output you're doing, because that's what indicates being good at this game.

The way the game is designed, swapping stances will never not be a part of the game, unless they remove the damage penalty from Grit, remove Sword Oath and remove the damage penalty of Shield Oath, and entirely change how WAR plays.

No it was never to eliminate stance dancing. It was to eliminate pulling in tank stance and then spending the rest of the fight in DPS stance while doing within 50-100 DPS of your group's actual DPS jobs (which you can't attribute to AP alone, tanks have significantly higher uptime and are responsible for (generally) fewer mechanics than DPS jobs), which is NOT stance dancing. People who consider that stance dancing have likely never raided a day in their life, casual, hardcore, midcore or otherwise.

The changes were to nerf STR gear, make pentamelds no longer "BiS", (which they aren't now, although they're certainly ideal during early prog which is another can of worms), widen the gap between tanks and DPS of equal skill/gear, and make tanking in DPS stance harder. Not impossible, but harder. They've, for the most part, succeeded at all of this.

Most tanks aren't getting above 8-900 DPS in fights with actual mechanics. On average they're doing less than that 7-800 at most, until they've got the fight on-farm, while the DPS are doing 1100-1400 (again depending on mechanics).

No, they failed at numerous things with that list of yours. Pentamelds were never BiS. Slaying was. Pentamelds were only BiS during progression and they still are. Aside from the earrings, pentamelds are unarguably better than anything but i240 gear. Even compared to i240 gear, the difference is small and if you're melding (partial) Vs, it's basically a wash -- pentamelds are better for DPS, i240 fending just gives more HP. Hmmm, I wonder where we've seen this before...

I find this idea of "actual mechanics" to be dubious at best. Does Sephirot have no mechanics? Does A5S have no mechanics? Does A6S have no mechanics? Soon A7S and A8S will have no mechanics with this logic. During early clears in pre-3.2, tank DPS was also lower. Optimizing play takes time. On Sephirot I'm consistently ~1100 DPS now. In our second A5S clear this week I was ~870 with conservative play. Could I easily crack 900 if I wasn't as considerate to my healers? Yea, easily. In our A6S progression I am usually around 800-900 in progression. Just look at WAR parses on fflogs. They're 200-300 DPS behind BRDs despite this being progression. Look at early 3.0. It was no different back then. As people get better gear, get more comfortable with fights and drop their tank stance more / get better optimization out of their Berserk / stacks, increase their up-time even further, and shorten fights, you are going to see that gap shrink just like it did before. Tank DPS scales much faster than DPS does. In early 3.0 A1S progression, it was reasonable to expect a WAR to be around 800 DPS. By the end of the patch cycle, they were breaking 1400.

People act like 100% DPS stance tanking was easy in 3.0 progression. It wasn't. Will it get easier as tanks get more gear? Yea, just like before.

People will cry but I don't feel things have changed much at all.

Pentamelds haven't changed at all. They didn't fix anything. If you are serious about progression you buy the accessory and you meld it. End of discussion. This hasn't changed at all. They're still BiS for progression and no longer BiS when stuff is on farm. They did not succeed at changing this. They have not changed at all. The only thing that changed is that other jobs also need pentamelds now.

As for DPS stance tanking, that was also almost non-existent in 3.0 progression. You're comparing the state of 3.1X tanks who are done with the progression cycle to 3.2 early progression. It is a flawed comparison and your conclusions are flawed, too. Nothing has really changed. We've just reverted back to the progression meta rather than the farm-status meta. I know plenty of even PLDs that have really high SwO up-time while MTing. As a WAR, if the damage intake allows, I am in full-time Deliverance after 1 Unchained BB. It hasn't changed. Again, they didn't succeed at anything in regards to this.

Against equally geared and skilled DPS, you weren't closing the gap in 3.0 progression either. Like I pointed out, the relative gap between tank DPS and actual DPS was not that far from where we are now and will shrink going forward.

My understanding is that the gap between tanks and DPS will only increase as more gear is accumulated. Primarily this being due to each stat being worth less - damage wise - for tanks than it was before the adjustment.

If tanks are doing around 3.0 DPS in ilvl 240ish gear (as someone claimed? I'm not sure, but I think they did; I somewhat doubt), the gap between DPS and tanks has widened without a doubt. For comparison, my MNK gained 200dps from 10ilvls alone (from 208 to 217). I imagine a dummy parse for a MNK in pure BiS would be almost 1.8-1.9k. A WAR would be around 1.3k with BiS? I'm not sure though. However, the gap was definitely not that big during 3.0, in absolute nor relative terms.

This is correct.
It'll be similar to that one MMO about Orcs and Humans fighting that's been out for a decade. Warriors in that game scaled much better with gear than most classes; so in the early parts of an expansion their DPS would be lackluster, but as time went on in the expansion cycle it got astronomically higher.

Having started to main WAR on this new patch, I may not be as affected as long time WAR mains, but damn those fell cleave crits while on berserker are still delicious to contemplate, somehow overall DPS on WAR feels right and being able to moderately stance swap for fell cleaving and berserker while maintaining safe margin of aggro is still doable and satisfying.

Your experience is what people need to remember: The playstyle of shifting smoothly between dealing and mitigating damage. The damage numbers were just lowered, and not even drastically.

I dunno as i find DRK even more Zzzz when you are in MP building phase, that is literally good ol 1,2,3 with random ogcd due procs. Not to mention DRK animations feels slow as hell >_>

I think DRK was animated that way so that the combat would appear as seamless, nonstop sword strokes. Much like how Paladins "stab, wait, stab again" is masked by their frequent blocking (so we can assume the PLD is taking a moment to watch the opponent and counter their blows.) War gets to appear slow because its an axe.

PLD also has quicker autos, so in-between their 123 are sword pokes that make it seem more seamless. DRK is just a million oGCDs, then you run out until Low Blow resets or something comes off CD, at which point you look a bit slower. WAR is generally slow moving as we only have one real oGCD and our autos are slow (but strong).

I can confirm 1,000 AP with ilvl221+full party+food buff, its actually exactly 1,000 on PLD and 1,010 for WAR and DRK as they still get 10 more AP than PLD. When solo without any buffs its approx 957 AP or so.

i realy dont get why people hate this. before the change my PLD only had like 720 attack power while in VIT build and about 840 in STR build. after it jumped up to 850 attack power in VIT build.
so i got more powerful while keeping HP up. top it off my clemency heals more now then did in either build before the change.

in game stats, not parse.

Before the uplate I had over 1k ap on my warrior without food or party buff, but that jumped down into the 800s after. But, iirc, SE tuned existing content to make up for the fact that tank dps got nerfed...so even though we now do lower dps the content we had before requires less dps. If that's true, you could almost say that dps classes and healers got a dps increase instead of tanks getting nerfed. ;D

These are positive changes indeed.

Seeing as how there is 'WAR' and 'DPS' in the thread title and I don't really feel like starting up a whole new thread; I'm going to take this opportunity to seek some advice.

Currently as a WAR main I've noticed that I am greatly under performing these days(hurdurwhenwereyounotunderperforming)and feel like I'm several hundreds of DPS behind optimal play.

My general play is essentially, opening unchained+zerk etc and your run of the mill 'optimal' ezmodewardps4lyfe. Y'know, things like Fracture when on high stacks, or using FC after heavy swing to minmax those abandon stack crits, essentially perma-deliverance outside of opener. My opener as OT is generally slow build into 3FCZerk or straight into 2FCZerk if TA is thrown out early.

So for example, on SephirotEX, since that's the only thing I have the time or energy to do these days, I am able to achieve generally 750-870 with 870 being my highest recorded recently as MT, with no food or pots(I'm2cheap4pugs), and with my current gearset, which is more or less 120's with some IV melds and accessories with STRV and a sprinkle of lore pieces but only an upgraded Parashu(210) for weapon.

My concern is also exemplified by the fact that I dummy parse WAR and DRK fairly equally(we're talking 1050 vs 1050 respectively. No food, pots, and party buff etc) despite the latter having no access to a slashing debuff. I'm also a terrible DRK since I'm still learning how to not find myself clipping or running out of MP in actual content and all that.

I beseech you! Friends! What secret have I missed out on these past few months of absence? Did we discover some ultra 4FCzerk?! How are people doing these 1-1.1k averages on Sephex!

It could mostly be because of gear discrepancies but I'm not confident about my rotation based upon the results and appreciate any chance of improvement.

I struggled with this problem as well when I switched to WAR not long ago. After some experimentation (and deep loathing towards A8S dummy) I found that if I weave in fracture twice (preferably at 4+ Wrath stacks) + infuriate Fell Cleave as soon as it's off CD, at my current SS it means Berserk is up on my heavy swing after the fourth stack. That means I can go ape the moment it goes off CD. Once my skill speed gets high enough, I'll probably alter my rotation to drop fracture and fit in an extra Fell Cleave. Mainly because I'm lazy and fracture is a button I really ceebs pressing.

Given the options you presented, I'd just sac the two stacks to the wind. Holding Berserk will give you a terminal disease (unless you only get one more Berserk until the boss dies, then ya it's ok). EDIT: I think I was wrong here.

Thanks. But the SSS trial is kinda short so it's much easier to keep track of how many stacks you can gain so I can drop those two stacks (similar to in seph ex p1) without dropping a fell cleave. Also it ends right there so there won't be any implications to later phases.

Now the question becomes how many gcds I can hold berserk, or how many stacks I can waste (like using combos when I already have 4-5 stacks) until it becomes an overall loss compared to using it immediately without doing triple cleave rotation. For comparison, since I also play DRG, the DRG guide thread mentioned that holding BFB even for one gcd is a dps loss regardless of where you are in the rotation. Of course there are differences like the 5s pacification and berserk being a bigger dmg boost %-wise, but there should be a breaking point.

The Fell Cleave though is an instant gain and so would building 4 stacks before Berserking (assuming the same time-frame of 7.5 seconds). I wouldn't mind someone a little more experienced at this (Paging JackFross) weighing in though, I haven't given this enough thought (clearly).

I was actually under the impression that holding BFB for a single GCD on it's first reactivation was the correct decision so as to ensure Chaos Thrust gets the tail end of the buff. However, I played DRG in 3.0, when skill speed numbers weren't as high, things may have changed now.

Hmm I mean, it's easier to calculate it for isolated short fights like SSS, for example (just a random number) if the maximum number of stacks you can get during the whole 3 minutes excluding infuriates is 48, then you can safely "waste" 2 stacks by doing an extra eye rotation while having 4-5 stacks since that wouldn't cost you any fell cleave. Obviously during 3 minutes you have 2 berserks and 3 infuriates/internal release, so holding berserk by ~7s won't hurt you. Surely we can do the same thing for any length of fight, but it doesn't seem very practical considering there are many more things to consider (moving bosses, dodging aoes, doing mechanics that may or may not always make you move from the boss, etc.). I guess for now the best conclusion we have would be that it is fine to hold it for a few gcds as long as it won't reduce the total number of berserks in the fight or make the 20s duration clip into mechanics/phase changes that make us unable to hit the boss.

As for BFB I'm not sure but I think my second BFB would never activate before chaos thrust, I think it's somewhere between the 4th skill and phlebotomize (or chaos thrust and 4th, can't remember exactly), but admittedly my DRG play has been a bit messy recently due to massive changes in skill spd while switching gears. I think the guide mentions in the cd management part that you shouldn't hold BFB even for one gcd for any instance other than the opener.

Saving Berserk will only harm you if you're:

1. Losing a Berserk
2. Pushing your Berserk back to a place where it becomes unoptimal later, IE later into a phase which should've been a burn but it came up too late to get the full duration out of it
3. Similarly, pushing your Berserk back so it no longer lines up with party offensive buffs

Another thing to consider is if you'll end up in a situation soon where you can OP spam and Decimate your heart out, in which case saving Berserk a bit for that is usually worth it. I haven't done Seph as WAR yet, only DRK, but I can't imagine Berserk really going too well in add phase since they die so quickly anyway, but it'd probably be worth considering on the adds in the last phase. For SSS you should only get 2 Berserks, so you definitely want triple FC there - I open with the pre-Infuriate pull, extending with Vengeance, and using RI for the extra stack which lines it up for when I need it later. Also allows for an extra stack with Vengeance, think I use that in a case where I'm at 4 stacks after SE/BB so I can HS -> FC, but can't remember off the top of my head.

Anyway, Berserk is finicky, just try and plan out when it'll be back up and see what you can do with it from there.

If you are potting with "very good" food and babysitting from an AST, you can probably parse for 1300+ these days. The top fflogs parses are ~2+ weeks old (though they do have stacked comps) and most people stopped caring about and doing Sephirot EX. My parse of 1143.5 from a week+ ago from a partial PF group hit that in a 9 minute kill with no potting, no food, no AST, and no on-demand pacification removal (the SCH might've removed it once).

To answer the actual question with more than a pat on the back, the biggest determining factor for WAR DPS comes down to 4 things. When I compare parses these are the key things that I look at when trying to improve.

The first and biggest influence on WAR DPS is Deliverance up-time. The numbers in question are an MT parse so your Deliverance up-time is probably lower.

The second is general up-time. Lost GCDs are a big hit to your DPS so your goal is to maximize up-time. Up-time optimization is fight specific -- in a fight like Sephirot, there is some nuance to this like lost GCDs during p1 movement for re-positioning and green / purple, Holmgang usage, timing pacification to correspond with orange if you are not using green stacking for melee, add management, etc. Look at a top parse and compare their aDPS up-time to yours.

The third is your stack management. Find a comparable clear-time parse with better DPS and look at how many FC / IB / Decimate / Steel Cyclone uses they are getting. If you are lower, chances are you are holding stacks or messing something else up.

The fourth is your buff management. The biggest contributing aspect of buff management is your Berserk up-time. For Sephirot EX, you can use 2 full 9GCD Berserks every p3 cycle on the same rotation but most WARs mess this up. When judging a fight, pay attention to the duration of phases, the timing of down-time and maximize your Berserk uses. There are some exceptions to this like Hummel (where there is an actual downside to getting 2 Berserks vs. 1) but generally you want to keep Berserk as close to off CD as possible while not sacrificing its up-time or buff synergy (using it on 4-5 stacks with Infuriate or syncing with buffs like Balance, IR, TA, BL, etc.).
