I enjoy both your tanking horror stories, Februs. I'll noted to myself that the maxing vul stack for M2 second boss is 9, since I got 7 last time I did it sincce the MT got d/c and died due to tankbuster. While on M4, I soloed the boss from start to end. xD OT didn't soak Double Rocket Punch with me so I took it straight to the face and every time that happened, it made me feel so alive! :D

So there I was, running A1N in df. I was one unidentified bone away from getting my 210 relic and turning it into the 230 relic. I was in queue for an abnormally long 56 minutes before I got in. I see my co-tank has an enormously high 14k hp...rip. He says he's new, which I had already figured, and I'm just like "no worries." There was also a mch that was new but it was okay, everyone else had cleared before should be a breeze. The Faust pull proved me wrong though. We wiped...on Faust...in A1N...but i guess dots killed it. And then I realized: he had grit on the ENTIRE time. I'm like okay, it doesn't really matter I can hold aggro even without grit. Anyway, we get to the Oppressor, I tel my co-tank that the 0.5 will spawn in the north and just provoke it and keep it there when it spawns. So...the first set of alarums spawn and he provokes the Oppressor off me. I say to myself, "okay just a small hiccup I'll provoke the 0.5 then." So when the 0.5 spawns, I provoke it and try to pull it south since he's north with the Oppressor. Suddenly, he provokes the 0.5 off me while still tanking the Oppressor. I get the 0.5 back off him (they have about 2 stacks at this point) and pull it back south. He decides he needs to tank the Oppressor square in the middle and before i know it they both have 10 stacks and my co-tank is dead. I'm like okay, time for beast mode, I pop a CD so it's a little easier on them and BAM I died because I didn't get a single heal. So...that pull ends in a wipe. I'm just like "okay, obviously he doesn't really know what to do." But no worries, should only take a minute or two to explain in detail." And then it happened. Someone blamed the wipe on me for "not pulling the Oppressor 0.5." I'm just like, "oh hell no." So I stood at the beginning until 15 minutes went by and hit vote abandon, it goes through and I continue to cry to my friends about how not doing the 210 relic back when it was a thing was the worst life decision I had ever made.

It's exciting to solo things that aren't supposed to be solo'd, isn't it? lol.

Since I posted that story, I've actually gone beyond 9 stacks in that fight. It happened only a few days later. This time, the other tank literally ignored every OT job he should have been doing. He wasn't new. He just didn't seem to care. I got all the way up to 5 stacks before someone else (aside from me) started to yell at him in the chat box, and he still didn't voke the boss. He ended up dying by eating too many mirages and standing in stupid, and I'm pretty sure the healers let him die out of spite or because they were too busy trying to keep me alive. They did offer him a raise, but he ignored it. I was kind of hoping he would get up and pitch in by the time I got to 8 stacks, but he decided to just stay dead on the floor for the rest of the fight. Meanwhile, I'm got up to 10 stacks of vulnerability, completely burned ALL of my cool downs, and was waiting for the inevitable death on the next Tank Buster. Thankfully the Dps managed to burn the boss before he killed me, but I still had to wait for all that vulnerability to fall off before I pulled the next boss. One of the healers made a comment about how "10 stacks is impressive." I would have loved to take all the credit, but I can say for certain that if the Dps had been a little slower, or the healers a little weaker, I would not have made it to the end.

The other tank did, eventually, accept his raise so he could join in for the next fight, but he might as well stayed on the ground. He didn't do anything for the entire run. He made one, piss poor, attempt at voking the final boss off of me (while still in sword oath), but he wasn't fooling anyone. We all knew he was there for the carry (frankly, we should have vote-kicked him). Thanks to that, though, I can now say that I have solo tanked the entirety of the Midas raid from M1 to M4 without an off tank. Every Fight. Every boss. All by myself, and long before I was geared for it. I say that partly with pride ... and partly with a morbid sense of self-pity.

^This was your problem right here. It's moments exactly like these in which the game gods chose to screw with you, just because they can. It made me chuckle, because I'm pretty sure we've all been in similar situations.

The worst part is definitely getting blamed for things you didn't do, or when it's not your fault. Every tank has been there. The most recent situation for me was back during my Thordan Ex runs. I kept getting into PF groups with one specific person who seemed devoutly invested in blaming me for everything that went wrong, even when I very clearly was not the one who did it. The most memorable instance was standing in a conviction tower, waiting for it to go off, getting hit with it, and then getting blamed for not standing in a tower and paralyzing the group. That one kind of blew my mind a little bit, especially since the actual hit came from the polar opposite side of the arena from the tower I was standing in, which I had been standing in the entire time.

Void Ark on reset day... Couldn't even get past the trash without wiping... I'm done with people in this game

Beautiful day for express-farming precision gordian parts for 210 relic in a peak of hype. Yuni goes auto-MT to do not waste time on communication. We clear trash and proceed to boss section, insta-pull with 10 sec warning used when we were descending to boss section.
2 Power Slashes and Yuni drops Grit for additional dps boost.
<Horror music intesifies>
And then after 2 sec I hear <se.10> x 3 and healers using macro:
"No Grit/Defiance/Shield Oath - no heal! Use tank stance!"
"I will not heal tank not using tank stance"

Wipe in 30 sec.
3 dps leaving instantly just after reviving. Yuni curses the twelve for uber-scrub healers.

Note:
I didn't even have time to give them any reason to believe i can't use cooldowns properly.

From that moment i am scared of healers. And i don't trust them.

Well big thumb up for this healer for this awesome macro (i should take it and adapt it for defensive cooldown)

Well there is good and bad in both side
If you did not tell the healer you would drop grit, it's your fault if you're dead.
The healer is not forced to be here to help you if you're being risky. His job is not to spam heal but only to keep you alive
Dropping grit mean he have to be more vigilant of your Cute Ass, it's more focus on health bar.
No warning and you could have died because he was pushing his own DPS.

But it's kind of means to instantly stop healing without warning.
I usually ask nicely one time as healer, if the tank is a Dick. Then i will show him that healer rules and peoples follow...

So I would said that the worst are the DPS...
Miscommunication happends leaving for 1 fault is not a good attitude.

Yeah DF healers can be pretty cancerous. Protip for all you tanks out there getcha a good healer to run with. Its dangerous out there. And I have absolutely zero trust in a df healer

Thornmarch on Hard.

Our DPS was phoning it in, no focus, no correct order of adds killed.

We wiped to Momento Moogle. As MT, I pointed out that all the Moogles but the WAR needed to die ASAP, while one of the DPS was trolling by saying to leave them all with no health.

Rinse and repeat for 3 attempts before we end it. Had to down the boss with another group, wasn't even hard.

Ok here's another tanking horror which happened last M4 run which made me question my tanking skill...When Brute Justice showed up and did his raid wide aoe, I shield lob him, he still targeted my WHM, I provoked and rage of halone him, he still target WHM ( when I watched my status bar there were medica II and regen on me), did his tank buster to the party. We wiped 3 times to this....I never had any problem with any other WHM before.

Now here's the question, am I a bad tank or is Brute justice aggro on WHM because of the regen and medica II ticked after I provoked him the first time he targeting that WHM? Should I wait for that WHM to use medica 2 and regen after the aoe first before I provoke?

I tanked the entirety of Antitower no problem yesterday.

Don't see how this is a horror story? check my lodestone for which classes I DONT have leveled

Sounds like the WHM was the problem. Hitting Medica II prior to the tank grabbing an enemy means you have to aggro fight for the mob. Sounds like he landed it after your taunt but before you followed up with an attack. To avoid this, wait a half second after he comes down before doing Taunt + Shield Lob. All the healers are going to be spamming heals during that phase because of the landing damage, and since everyone is already on the hate list, they act as way stronger aggro generators than any tank opener; so let them get the heal off first, then turn their aggro into your aggro with Taunt.

I agree, but I do find it odd that he was unable to grab aggro back after the voke. A voke followed by a enmity move of any kind should be enough to secure enmity off of any other job with the exception of another tank. Not being able to grab it back right away makes me question what went wrong.

My first assumption is that the voke missed, somehow. It sounds crazy, but I have seen it happen before. I've seen it a few times where a Tank throws out a voke that has absolutely no effect at all (not even a wiggle on the boss enmity). I've only seen it a few times, though, so I'm not sure if it's a latency thing or a glitch or what. The other options is what you mentioned: A late AoE heal caused a wrinkle with the enmity ... But I still find it odd that it would generate that much enmity. A full RoH combo should have been enough to secure hate. Without seeing the exact sequence of events, it's difficult to speculate on what exactly might have gone wrong there. Sounds kinda weird to me.

Regardless, it provides for one of those rare instances in which Cover can come in handy until enmity is secured.

It is odd since gear isn't my problem. I was thinking the same. I used provoke the first time BJ targeted the WHM and RoH combo. Was it the combined tick of medica 2 from each member of the raid plus the regen tick on me was too high too the point of an RoH combo isn't enough? Keep in mind that the WHM has the same gear as I am.

Sometimes I find this to be a latency problem. It's more visible in trash pulls, where you lose enmity on a lone mob for a fraction of a second. I'll still hit it with flash/halone/whatever, but it will run alllll the way back to smack the healer (or bard) before running back to me, since I still have enmity on it. It's just in that tiny amount of time I didn't, it decided to hit someone else, and nothing I can do will change that.

Double Rocket Punch comes very soon after the jump, and if your enmity isn't solid by then, there's a small chance it will target someone else with it. And it -will- hit them, regardless of whether you pull it back before it lands, or even if they move out from in front of him. If you wait to provoke, this only makes it even more certain the tank buster won't be targeting you.

The jump really should be shielded before hand, then mass healing held off until things are settled -- the party isn't going to be taking any more damage before the double rockets. There is plenty of time beforehand. WHM should be using Stoneskin2 rather than Medica2. SCH have Adloquium and Deployment. I don't know AST well enough to say about them.

Having both Medica2 and Regen running when BJ appears is equivalent to doing the same during a long pull. The healer is just begging to get smacked. Unfortunately, the next smack is going to kill them. And one other person. The really sly WHMs who do this deliberately will stand next to the other healer when attempting this.

What you can do is Divine Veil and Clemency yourself while he's forming, then move closer to where he lands. Use Tempered Will to avoid the knockback and then go straight into the Halone combo, while punching him with Circle of Scorn and Spirits Within. Fight or Flight if you can fit it in before then. This should give you a better burst enmity lead than Shield Lob alone while running into melee range.

TLDR: It's a healer error. To reduce this risk as a tank, you have to be proactive. If you need to Provoke, it's too late.

This is definitely a possibility as well, though it's not necessarily a latency issue.

It's kind of hard to explain, but enemy attack rotations work the same way as ours. If they execute an attack on a target, that attack must be finished on that target, regardless of if their enmity changes midway. The way this functions is similar to the temporary target function used on Ps4. On console, if you hard fix a target (not to be confused with lock-on, which is different) and then tap the D-pad onto a new target, your character will generate a temporary targeting reticle on the new target without dropping their hard-fixed target. To hard-fix onto that new target, you have to confirm with the X button; however, if you execute an attack without confirming the new target, the system will execute that attack onto the temporary target before automatically returning your character onto it's first, primary, target. It's a strange little system they probably incorporated to make up for a controller's slower targeting potential (lack of point-and-click).

Monsters work the same way. If you lose aggro on a monster (meaning they are now targeting someone new) and they execute an attack during that time they are registered by the system as executing an attack on a different player. Because of this, even if the tank grabs aggro back before the attack is completed, the monster must complete that attack on it's original target before switching back to the tank. Hence, the mob will run all the way too that target, smack them once, and then run all the way back to you. Monster attacks and auto attacks are fairly infrequent; so it's not something that is too noticeable, but when it does happen it can be annoying, especially if that target is ranged and is pulled outside of your AoE's.

Whenever I don't Tank Thornmarch Hard it's a disaster. And honestly Tanking that is Easy as hell. They somehow struggle to get the GLD/MRD Moogles and just hit whatever they feel like hitting. I usually just end up Tanking the King and the 2 little moogles all at the same time.

And uncoordinated DPS...oh boy.

Mostly I agree. There's really no need to heal anyone right away, since only the tanks are going to be taking damage until after DRP. And sure, healing the tanks, but... I know as OT, I stick to Defiance through the pre-buffing/healing until after Brute Justice lands, and without any healing landing on me after the raidwide, I'm at max HP again when I switch to Deliverance. Meaning I've taken less than 20% of my HP pool in damage. So... yeah, it's not going to be that much of an issue during the first few seconds.

the M4 thing is very common in DF. honestly a whm healing after the drop is justified. As a PLD, Provoke -> Shield Lob -> CoS -> Fast blade -> continue on your business work everytime. The provoke will even hate baseline, whatever medica2 tick won't be able to offset your shield lob+cos hate. Tested weekly with same whm who's better geared than me (my pld is not main, which makes me sad)

I assume when you say "he jump", you're refering to the transition into add phase. well Spoiler alert: that is not proximity based. lol

I was leveling an alt last night as GLA(17?), and I was just thinking how I had the stereotypical worst party imaginable (not counting rude players) in a dungeon. I had two DPS going full force on different enemies and a healer that was spamming heals on me. Every time I took 30-40 damage, I saw a heal for 270-360. I was able to hold threat since I'm a veteran at this point, but it was just ridiculous how uncoordinated and inefficient that group was. I didn't feel like saying anything, which is probably a bad thing to do considering the next tank that if the next tank they come across is relatively new, that tank is going to have a very bad time.

Lol ok guess I don't have to worry and that. :p since I love finding ways to minimize dmg as much as possible so I could bored the healers out. XD

Casting it mid combat isn't a huge problem. Similar to casting Raise mid-combat.
Swiftcast is a thing.

I've not noticed any more damage, no.

Mostly everyone gathers together because Sacred Soil and AE heals are simpler that way.

What he meant was that stoneskin 2 cannot be used during combat. Only the single target stoneskin can be casted mid fight.

I've only been playing a couple of months and tried my hand at tanking for the very first in my first dungeon last week. I ended up grouped with 2 really well geared lvl 60 DPS, a BLM and a BRD and a high level healer (all scaled down of course). No matter what I did, I lost aggro on almost every pull. We didn't wipe and nobody complained, however, it wasn't a great tanking experience and I haven't tanked again since. It's time to try again I think :cool:

Don't worry too much about it in this case where tank is outgeared by DPS and healer there's nothing much we can do except try spamming flash/unleash/overpower, and RoH/PS/Butcher Block combo ( Hence I'm not a WAR yet, so excuse my WAR rotation) in order to get as much aggro as we can.

Honestly, its a scaling issue. it is completely normal for a synced level 60 tank to have emnity issues under those circumstances depending on the dungeon. you can imagine how much worse it is as a freshly/undergeared tank with little experience going into that. If it was any dungeon pre- toto-rak, its honestly so common that it's expected. I wouldn't be too discouraged over it. however, after level 26 (30 for warrior) and you get your 3rd emnity combo(rage of halone/power slash/butcher's block), that will START being less and less of an issue.

honestly for low level first time tanking, i would highly suggest drk if you have a 60. unleash+blood weapon gives you a very reliable AoE tanking base the other 2 dont have pre-30, and translates very well to gladiator with flash and riot blade

It's interesting you mention that. I really like the look and feel of the DRK, however, I was reading a beginners tanking guide that said it's was highly advised to learn to tank using one of the other tanks before switching to DRK. If that's not the case, then I'll certainly give that a go, as DRK was my end game plan for tank .

Running leveling roulette to finish up my PLD: A 10 wipe Sohm Ahl run with a MCH and NIN. 4 wipes on dinosaur boss because NIN couldn't target the damn blob for LB and their DPS wasn't high enough to burn him. Followed by 6 wipes on final boss because they couldn't grasp the concept of baiting the comets to the back of the room, then getting out of the way. Followed by an abandon...An hour+ of my time with no bonus XP. FML

i feel i should expand a little then. what i mean to say is... pre level 30, DRK is absolutely free to spam unleash (their AoE emnity generator).they have a skill, blood weapon, a buff that boosts mp generation and you also have syphon strike, a weaponskill combo that generates MP as an added effect. these stack. basically, you can unleash until MP is dry, blood weapon, and repeat the process. is simple. its easy. its hand-holding. thats why i recommend it for a first time tank. you can hold aggro and have your training wheels to branch out and learn.

This can also translate to gladiator/ paladin because flash and riot blade work in a similar fashion, though alot less effective since they dont have the MP generation buff from blood weapon. I've personally been able to hold AoE aggro on undergeared alts on different servers by spamming flash and using 1 or 2 riot blades in order to be able to flash again. though this might be more from experience rather than something i should be recommending to new tanks. riot blade itself doesnt generate emnity so its not a great tanking tool on its own. almost useless in sastasha levels, really.

however, that strategy starts to fall apart after level 30, especially so for DRK because their stances drain and limit your MP generation. so what you heard isnt exactly wrong either.
I find that recommendation comes from the fact that dark knight unlocks once you reach heavenward content. that is post-level 50 content. so you should realistically have your "main" up to that point be a tank so that you have the gear, cross class skills, and knowledge to just jump into DRK without needing a talk like this. i would also advocate for having the other tanks at least leveled. if not for the tanking experience, for the cross class skills. theyre not the greatest picks for DRK, but youre gonna need things like provoke or convalescence

What those guides are probably getting at is GLD and MAR both start at lv 1 and your first dungeon is Sastasha at 15 giving you 15 levels of practice before you can even get into a dungeon where aggro matters. DRK starts at lv 30 and you can immediately jump into a dungeon without having a clue, not only that, but you also run the risk of getting a (relatively) more difficult dungeon as your first dungeon if you go into roulette.

That said, the basics of tanking are the same between the three classes. Knowing how to pull, position, use cool downs, etc isn't specific to one tank class. If you know how to tank it doesn't matter which one you tank on really; its just a matter of reading your skills and learning how to apply them. If you start as DRK, just take some time to learn your skills before jumping into a dungeon and you'll be fine.

Titan EX. It's very simple, just requires quick reflexes to dodging AoE. Healers and almost all DPS were amazing. The thing is the tank kept dying XD i checked the other tanks gear beforehand and they clearly out geared me, as I was still using decent leveling gear. So I asked who wanted to MT. He said he would and went off to attack. Everyone reacted fast so it was no problem. After he got the third stack of vulnerability we swapped tanking. Instead of just doing dmg and helping DDs he stood by the DDs and kept using voke and all his tank abilities. Eventually the party would wipe cause everyone but me. Had vulnerability down and Titan made quick work of them XD

well this one was a while ago,

So just started the game and I tried most of classes then I stick with mrd, keep it up and get war. continue until stone vigil. I jump in and it does the new player thing. I comment to party that im new. and next thing I know the healer wasn't even around and taking damage!? so I run ahead to see him attacking shit, I quickly pull and hold hate. after that mob we rush of to the next one just to get killed cause of no heals. I run up again and start trying to hold hate. dies again, and every one just seem to keep going. So I ask the healer, yo what are you doing? you trying to speed run? ... yeah so hurry up! ... um I don't think us dying is helping us get through any sooner. next thing I know I was kicked out. and the best part the healer was a mentor.

Qarn. Every time. I hate tanking it.

You Should always start off on one of the other classes.I reccomend playing both gladiator and marauder up to lvl 30 before going near dark.
By just hopping onto Dark as first tank is just so wrong in so many ways.Leveling up both Marauder and gladiator to lvl 30 means you will have access to most of their cross crass skills you can use on Dark.Not just that but it will give you tanking experience with mechanics and dungeons before Haukke manor,By useing both classes you will also get the feel of tanking with a character who has strong aoe agro and one that has to focus more with use of single target skills.
