[REQUEST] Can we have a more original race next time?

One thing i have yet see through all of these post is anyone simply stating the uniqueness this game already offers. Hear we have a great series I love completely, every race is detailed, amazingly animated, and simply fits well with established lore, races, equipment, story. Any of the oft mentioned/ referenced games brought in to this discussion i feel have those option some have been asking for. The end result would be to make this game like those mentioned before, by this reasoning is that not attempting to ruin the established unique nature of this game? Erozea/ Erozeans have and are of many races's all of which by The Twelve, Hydaelyn, some other as to yet be named power, ect... They fit a certain look and feel to this game, the aesthetics are just as important as any number of aspects of the over all presentation.

A feral, bestial, savage race say something to the effect of this:

Now simply recall the events of the 2.0 story line quest. Picture these characters in those situations, every animation, gear made to fit.

Now do either of these seem to likley want to unlock the secrets of Allag? Be embroiled in the politics of the GC's or the city states for that matter? Would they have access to all of the dances, mounts, emotes, limit break animations, genders? Would they not look out of place being invited in to Ishgard proper, House Fortemps?

There comes a time when wanting diversity for the sake of uniqueness becomes very unoriginal...

Wow, saw this mentioned once then never again, even though it's the by and far obvious reason why the Au Ra are just another flavor of miqo'te. Right now every piece of equipment is built on scalable models. It's the same model, but the scaling applied changes depending on if Derplander wears it as opposed to PAL-Roe. If you have a race with a wholly unique body shape scaling ceases to be an option, you have to make all new models for every piece of visible gear in the game with maybe an exception or two like earrings. That's a lot of equipment, and not a small time sink either. Remember that they've been developing Heavensward along side content for every patch and event in the game thus far. I doubt they would have had Heavensward ready as soon as they have if they'd gone with a more unique look for the Au Ra.

If we're going underwater, or having a Sea based expansion, it'd be cool to have a race somewhat resembling Zora's.

For reference, for those who don't know (shame on you). To be fair though the game already has a nice spread of races. Subtly carried out, and very believable while still being fantasy based.

It's only in overall shape that new races have to resemble the current ones, near enough to wear the same gear. That basically just means they have to be bipedal, with two arms and two legs in more or less the same positions a person has. A snout, for instance, would actually be far easier to accommodate than big ears or horns are, since those require adaptations on hoods and most hats and helmets, whereas a snout would only require adjustments on a tiny number of closed-faced helmets. An animal's claws/talons on hands that are shaped enough like a human's to hold a weapon wouldn't take much if any adjustment. Having limbs that are proportioned differently than a human's wouldn't require any more adjustments than lalafells already get. Having fur or scales wouldn't require any adjustments at all.

If you're going to talk about the bonuses, talk about the penalties as well. While FFXIV doesn't have bonuses, they don't have penalties as well.

Ogres and Trolls cannot wear much of the gear in the game due to their size. Iskar can't wear plate and their AC 'bonus' doesn't make up for that. All of the races listed also have severe CHA shortage making buying and selling cost quite a bit more.

All of these penalties are mitigated later. But so are the bonuses when the other races have access to them either through gear or AAs.

I could go into what their 'extra' stats actually give them. Because you know.. more STR doesn't translate to more damage. At least not linearly. But I think I've proven my point.

SE has all the statistics on what races people like. It shows that people like the cute human looking races. Mi'qote females taking the #1 spot as most popular race/gender combo. People like 95% human with 5% animal characteristics. Given that they went with lets make a cute girl character that is like 95% human and 5% dragon looking, for our dragon themed expansion. Then a lot of people liked the race and want to play them in HW.

Sort of. They have statistics on which of the currently available races people like, not on what else they might have liked better. As for people playing human looking characters, it's because that's the only thing we have to choose from. When it comes to things like how many of the people playing Miqo'te are doing so because they're cute versus how many are playing them because ears and a tail as as near as we can get to a more bestial race, nobody can do more than guess at that. SE seems to be guessing they're the most popular because they're cute and moe, and there are certainly some people who play them for that reason. I for one would much rather my Miqo'te looked more like a Ronso, but that option just isn't available.

Well, the guys that played horde did identify better with what they called the "ugly" races. Others are pulled in by the faction leaders and notable characters attached to that race (all the Sylvannas fans rolling undead, all the Thrall fans rolling orcs and so on). There's also the guys that stayed horde since vanilla and originally rolled their characters for the overpowered racials and never race-changed into anything else.

What I'm getting at is that I doubt an "ugly" race would pull those guys here from WoW. It may, but I find it somewhat unlikely.

No game will allow a player to play anything that isn't a Biped (or a vehicle.) This, as stated multiple times is because the animation system (eg how legs and arms work) require it to work that way. Likewise the monster animations for the human-sized beast tribes are all essentially the same.

The detail in FFXIV goes above and beyond. Take a close look at the earrings and necklaces... any other game and those wouldn't even be shown.

1) "Ugly" gritty, dirty, western-style characters. So many WoW-clones do this and quite frankly I can't figure out why anyone would want to play a WoW clone only with de-saturated colors. Yet the TESO fans really really wanted to not look colorful like WoW

2) Japanese games almost always align with cute, even when they are trying to be gritty:

So there's your different body sizes, and in this game every piece of gear "fits everyone" but they are all model-specific. Which also means that there is very little unique gear other than these special cash-shop costume items. Wizardy has nearly no non-combat animations (all cutscenes are just your character doing the idle wobble pose.) In fact, asset reuse even applies to dungeons.



3) Korean games tend to not really care:

Every race wearing the same outfit. Tera's animations are essentially identical between every race, even though they have more variation in the actual shapes. Tera's conversation (eg with story/npc's) system is non-existent and last time I played it was just text boxes.

Here's GW2, same idea... essentially every animation between every race is the same. And for whatever reason people love to compare Tera and GW2. I never played it, so I can only comment based on video/screenshots.

Then there's Archage. Which the game models are actually pretty capable, if not terribly unique looking (The Firran IMO are rather awful looking) but just about everyone in the game looks the same, because there's not a very much variety in gear. What is really awful are the cutscenes. While they are certainly better than say, Wizardry Online's "stand still and wobble", they seem to only serve the purpose for the jiggle physics, and most players just turned the "cutscene style conversations" off.

Aion, only has two races. But they have the most tunable models among all the games (you can create your own face/build.) But they still only have one animation set. So... less races = more customization.



4) FFXIV's customization starts and ends with clothing dye.

Like... when you look at every other game, at least FFXIV's races have uniqueness to them. It would probably be better if faces had more tuneables and we could have different age/weight builds, but then there are other things to consider, like how cutscenes work (Lalafells get some rather messed up videos during the Hildibrand storyline for example, where as on every other race the objects being thrown go in a straight line.) FFXIV's cutscenes are the best cutscenes I've seen in any game i've played to date. Mabinogi was the only other game that the cutscenes were actually interwoven into the storyline using the character models, and not just a series of one-sided conversations with a faceless NPC.

So the point is, the reason we don't get more variety in races is because it's not just a simple substitution. Everything has to be considered.
- Gear
- Cutscenes
- Animations used in and out of battle
- Voices (when present)

At some point in the future, when the game assets can be streamed, and players aren't being gouged by their ISP's for data usage, maybe we will see games that have far more variety. But today, I don't think you're going to get much support for a game that needs to ship on a 1TB hard drive.

Scales, fur, tails, fins on the head and more obviously animal faces would work. Long claws on both feet and hands.

Hell, Aion Asmodian tail is actually a mane down the middle of the back and they wear "heels" because that spike is actually a claw.

Miqo and Au Ra are human girls with tails and ears. Vanguard did similar (human body, animal head) and folks complained there too.

What people are asking for is something that isn't very obviously a Hume with different ears/tail/skin color.

Now maybe if Au Ra were completely covered head to toe in those scales, making them look more alien, they'd pass.

There is the matter of scale. Female Draenei are almost as tall as male night elves (the tallest alliance race) and have the 4th tallest model in the game (behind male and female tauren and male night elf). I can say they do have an aspect of cuteness to them while also having their own degree of sexiness (hence /waggle).

I guess you could say they do manage to look cute but have a size advantage that makes it less "offensive" and can even lean towards intimidating depending on how you customize and gear them.

I'm sorry but you are fairly far off the mark. Snouts would require major modification of anything with a mask in addition to closed and open faced helmets. Hats without masks are pretty much the only thing that would not need very much modification other than for ears/horns. It would also take even more modification to make non-vertical necks work.

If a tail is anymore substantial than the ones for Miqo'te and Au Ra that requires major modification on both body and leg pieces.

Digitigrade feet (it is what most bestial races traditionally walk on) require completely new boot and shoe designs unless their feet are more "normal" and they walk more like they are always wearing high heels. This doesn't even get close to the design work required for cloven hooves and bird feet.

If you just look at it by faction I'd say the uglier the race the less played with the Pandaren being an exception, of course they are the "fat" race so perhaps that's it. I don't think dwarves or gnomes come off as particularly pretty or cute in wow art not like say Lalas.

The realm pop data also does not subdivide the races by sex. I would not be surprised if Draenei characters were mostly female.

Most digitigrade is handled like heels in games except woe and eq2.

In wow, trolls, worgen, tauren and draenei do not have a foot to their boots. Ankle/calf yes. Hoof/paw/trollfoot doesn't fit in boots.

Sarnak in EQ2 had specially made helmets and boots(dragon men).

Are there even high heels in this game?

I'm not quite sure why you started with "you are fairly far off the mark" when you're not really disputing much. Well, ok, so you added one item, the game's one and only mask design, in addition to the closed-faced helms that I'd already mentioned.

But as I pointed out, things like cat ears and horns, which clearly are within the range of what SE is willing to adjust for, need adjustments to nearly all hoods, hats, and helmets. A snout, on the other hand, would need adjustments to closed-faced helmets and that mask, but not to most helmets, nor to any hats or hoods. (The only other types of headgear in the game are things like circlets and glasses which wouldn't need adjustments in either case.) So overall, a snout would require far less adjusting than what SE agrees is reasonable.

[EDIT: Oh, and I forgot, there's also a scarf that covers the lower half of your face. That one would require adjustment as well. (Still doesn't change the real point, though, that most headgear doesn't cover the lower half of your face.)]

I don't particularly like that tail design, but what I dislike isn't the tail itself, but the fact that the rest of the character doesn't match. It comes out looking more like a girl cosplaying a tailed creature rather than like someone who actually has a real tail. Just giving Au Ra actual scales rather than a few odd little patches here and there would have mostly taken care of that problem. It would help the tail and body to match.


As for the rest of your post, the fact that you can come up with a few things that wouldn't work as easily has no bearing at all on the fact that, as I pointed out, there are lots of others that would work just fine with little or no adjustments to gear. (And even your hardest examples could still be done. Digitigrade feet would require special adjustments for shoes and boots, but at least that adjustment could be done once, rather than eight different hat/helm adjustments to accommodate all the different Au Ra horn styles.)

Most games have the horns/ears stick through supposed holes in helmets...

I'm afraid you just do not get how many there are and pretty much every one would need adjustment.

And as for what I mean by a substantial tail, look at the Amalj'aa and Mamool Ja. Their tails are not an add on to the human form, but a major part of their bodies.

My post is going to be a bit off topic. I've been playing around on Korea's Black Desert and my ranger is a sort of elf/humanoid. This game makes me so excited for the future of character customization.

Lets look at it with faction in mind then. Both factions have at least one pretty race to choose from.
Horde: 71% of characters are of an "ugly" or bestial race
Alliance: 48% of characters "ugly" or bestial (including dwarfs and gnomes) or 32% (excluding dwarfs and gnomes)

What you are ignoring is that the number of western players who would happily play as an ugly/beast race is not negligible. When split into separate races it may seem that the non-pretty are less popular, but that's because there's 8-10 of them to choose from and only 3-5 human like.

One of the reasons why people pick the monstrous races on Horde side is because they are given the misfit role:
"Misunderstood and cast aside, these diverse and powerful races strive to overcome their differences and unite as one in order to win freedom for their people and prosper in a land that has come to hate them. In the Horde, action and strength are valued above diplomacy, and its leaders earn respect by the blade, wasting no time with politics. The brutality of the Horde's champions is focused, giving a voice to those who fight for survival."

Even earlier in this thread someone didn't find it believable that a monster could successfully serve the grand companies and meddle in politics. No matter their culture, advancements or heroic deeds, non-pretty races would be lumped together with beastmen by both player and NPC. But that kind of hardship is precisely what attracts some people to choose those races. I think that if a playable beast race was ever introduced in FFXIV, the story team would have the skill to consider all of this and make it believable.

I would like to emphasize that my criticism for FFXIV races is mainly towards the female designs. With males they did an excellent job. Miqo'te and Au Ra males look borderline beast races already and the rest are very distinct from one another.

See, that's the problem. They'd have their own story. In games like WoW, the EverQuests, and the like, it's perfectly fine for races to have their own stories.
However, this game already has its own story, and it's not about a beastman overcoming adversity to become recognized by the people of Ul'Dah...only to be branded a criminal again and have that all be for nothing.
Which creates another issue: We are the enemy of the Monetarists/Syndicate. They want reasons to kill us. "Being a beastman" is precedence enough for them to give the WoL the boot for...being a beastman. However, since we're not a beastman, they can't use that as a pretext.
In short, the story of this special beastman would overwrite the story of the Warrior of Light. You'd basically be required to rewrite several DOZEN quests as well as create new ones wholecloth just to justify this character's existence.
In addition, you'd need to alter several SIDEquests, such as the Moogle Mail quests.
Basically, they would need to introduce an all-new scenario for this race...
A new scenario in a game that rewards you for putting all your focus into one character.
Rather than a playable race, it would be MORE interesting if these beastmen were your Adventuring Fellow/Path Companion and you got to play through their story through their perspective as side missions on your main character.
But as a full on playable race? It's simply not practical from a lore, design, and monetary perspective.

Also something just started bothering me: All the suggestions for new "original" races are using games that already have a variation as precedent.
I mean, at least ones like Nu Mou has only technically been done in another final fantasy game...but asking for an original idea and then pointing out something that already has it strikes me as odd.

My issue with this is simply that is not what Erozea is about. Your example firstly sets the stage of a two sided faction one of which are "misfits cast aside" this was to aggravate a state in the mind set of a player base in to a world of war(craft)...

Erozea is not that place, open world pvp is not encouraged, barely is it even insinuated. The example given calls for a group to be ostracized in order to band together. As it stands all city states are calling for peace and unity in order to defend themselves from Garlean occupation. The introduction of a race specifically made to be "hated because they are ugly" sounds like very lazy writing to me.

I honestly hate people who tell others to go "Play something else, this obviously is not the game for you". It is small minded, rude and plays into a sense of entitlement they honestly have no right to. By this example you seem to be telling me the game I enjoy as is, with the direction it has been going, needs to change... I dislike that very much.

Your emphasize i will not fault you in, I truly feel an opportunity was missed with the Au Ra females, if the Xaela, followers of the Dusk Mother had their gender heights reversed (females larger more feral in appearance than their male counter parts) I feel it would have struck an amazing balance between the two tribes.

I have made many post on this thread, the subject of which stressing the technical aspects that would go in to what many can safely argue would be service for a minority, who even then may very well not bother actually using the race but only want it as a background option for others (they are far to attached to their pretty race and would not change)... I'll not claim I am an expert in any way shape or form, or that I know of the vast amount that goes in to creating all that is necessary to introduce a new race. I will say as a long time fan of both FF series and WoW, they are not the same. They only share the fact that they are mmo's set in a fantasy setting. Comparing them is like comparing gasoline and water, you don't use water in a gas tank, you don't put fire out with gasoline. Their player base is different as vastly different as their country of origin, this does not mean one person can not enjoy both, only that fundamentally that same person will enjoy them for different reasons.

Created in the Heavensward benchmark (that has dropped my 11k score to 6k. Weird).

Not Au Ra gatortail looks the way it does so they don't have to alter armor(already tiny hole for miqo til) and yet look like thicker tail.

The heads look like Barbie. The hair reinforces it. That's the biggest turnoff for me. Can't even give them sharper features, they're all soft and sweet. The tribal difference is color palette.

A great many people seem to be regarding the request for more exotic features as wanting something ugly. I for one don't want an ugly bestial character. I want a beautifully feral and exotic one.

(Not meaning to pick on you in particular Kisai, just picked a convienient example from all the references to "ugly" characters.)

They should add some beastmen races as options (the friendly/neutral ones, at least). I could just imagine all the excess of Qiqirn players running around. I'd imagine it could even rival the bikini cat girls that are running around currently.

As many have already said, lots of people just want something that doesn't look like a high school Halloween party.

They don't have to have extra limbs in weird places to be feral, or savage looking. Nor does feral equal ugly. They took races that were already distinctively feral and watered them down to horrible cosplay.

Galka lost their tails, and slightly altered porportions. They used to have much longer arms and shorter legs making them almost gorilla like, and the tail. They were DISTINCTLY not human, but now are just body builder people.

Mithra lost the cat nose, peach fuzz over their entire bodies, and their facial marks look like bad tattoos now when they used to be more like natural stripes.

When people say less human we don't all mean jump immediately to something without 2 arms and 2 legs. Just with some damn attitude and less salon hair.

I tried to recreate my mithra from 11. It just didn't work. At all. So I just made the fiercest one I could come up with. SE can have all my fantasia money if they just add something that isn't just human + headband.

I would like propose the addition a quest line that for twenty four hours, gave a buff in game that would lock a characters appearance in to that of a beast tribe model. Basically one would go to a friendly beastmen encampment ask four a glamour of that race (one which would be available at a low reputation level) and take the form of that beastmen for a full day without the option for turning it off. No new animations would be needed, no new lore, fights would work the same way as always just with the glamour on, just a quick quest. Something to the effect of "A mile in their shoes (claws/feet?)". Make this an event to measure just how popular a feral, ugly, vicious race would actually be, hell make a two day buff only obtainable at level 50. Just to show the developers their hard work would not be in vain.

What alot of people are missing here is that for all the races that have been mentioned, unique models had to be made for all the armor they can wear. Draenei all have unique head and foot wear models. And Mass Effect dodges the issue altogether by just having the aliens fall into the 'Standard Uniform' trope, allowing only the main character to change appearance whenever. The Au Ra only really forced them to make unique head wear models, their legs could easily be set to use existing miqo'te assets and scaling applied as normal.
