Cecil was actually pretty good DPS. It is also worth noting that KAIN was a better tank than Cecil at that point in the game and he was a gorram dragoon.

you can't compare a solo game and a mmorpg, if we was following the ff lore, most of the jobs will be dps... they needed to add class that are tank.
and sorry if you don't like this, but a big armor, with spell that cripples the enemy and drain them make it a perfect fit for a tank.
YES!!!!!!! I wanted to be a DRK tank so badly. It was the best tank job in FFXI for many years can't wait to tank on DRK again.
I just really wanted it to be dps so I could have a sword and shield tank and 2 handed sword or sword and shield dps. Now my hopes of being Dark Knight and Paladin together for different purposes is gone...
"Drk is the way it was in FF4, FFT, FF X-2, instead of the way it was in FFXI! I'm MAD! I want it the way it was in FFXI!"
No matter how its argued or prettied up, this is the view of people who are mad about it being tank.
Its not like SE is going back on their decision, you're just gonna have to deal with it.
I welcome Dark Knight as a tank class.
Too many dps classes already, if you want to play Dark Knight you need to actually have some responsibility in the party than just pewpewpew damage damage damage :D
I mean that in the most non-saracastic, sarcastic way.
I think it's intriguing that it's a tank. ROG/NIN got a pretty balling skill-set list, I'm sure they'll hook DRK up.
Very much this, i just wanted to actually kill things with a sword without having to tank. My group of friends i play with already have a huge problem with EVERYONE wanting to tank as it is.
I have also never played XI, so good luck trying to play that card with me.
Should be DD
THANK GOD IT'S A TANK.
Phew, that is a crisis avoided.
Imagine being a healer and having to heal someone with Blood for Blood on all the time and they only have as much health as a DRG?
That'd suck.
Also, I'm willing to be the Sword DPS job will be a fencer of some sort.
I just wanted a DPS option for the classes/jobs that wield the most iconic melee WEAPONS in human history. (Swords, Axes, etc.)
Hell, it's a GREAT SWORD for crying out loud. Anyone's initial thought with such weapon types would be to CUT THINGS!
Atleast I won't have to worry about gearing it up... Sigh.
Gotta love life sometimes... I go to re enlist, SE announces expansion goodness abouf the time i should be getting in basic. Oh irony lol
Anyways on topic: I vaguely recall it being said that the exapnsion would bring a tank, healer, ranged dealer and heavy dd (if someone had a link that'd be awesome, I'm at wotk atm) my predictions for new jobs are;
Dark knight- tank
Samurai - heavy dd
Ranger - ranged dd
And idk about what the healer will be.
There goes my dream of being a Drk again.
Oh well...
I was hoping DRK would have been a DD but oh well just another job I will level and slowly gear but not play beyond doing stuff in open world.
I lol i remember in FFX-2, all i did was DRK all the way through the game. Good HP pool and did good dmg lol
a bit surprise seeing it as a tank. was kinda hoping for Scythe DPS user. But Oh well. Keep going SE!
I will like to point out the reason why Dark Knight may not have a class is because it is a Advance Job.
Yoshi-P mentioned back in 2.0 he has plans for Advance Jobs that will require may be 2 Jobs to unlock such as the example he used being Red Mage requiring both Black Mage and White Mage.
Though I question how a Dark knight will work as a Tank since in past FF lore the Dark Knight was known for being a DD Job with tank like stats that was used to keep itself alive while it used its own HP to perform High DD level damage.
No, there initial thought would be to gain MASSIVE attention.
Greatswords also bring intimidation/attention to your enemies. In MMO words, HUGE AGRRO PULL! Plus your slashing at the boss, whats wrong with that when your a Tank?
Samurais would have little to no defense, given with parry's or not. There armor was not meant for the tanking type unlike full armor. At least with DRK, you could have different playstyle options. take full damage and attack to regenerate health, or lower health to deal good damage and inflict debuffs. Plus, these DRK's sound like they are going to be a bit different.Quote:

Why would they release another DPS class? We have plenty of those. Going back many years ago when FF2 was released, before we knew it was actually the 4th game in the series, on SNES Cecil was a DRK and he was considered a tank.
Wow, the Dark Knight as a tank who uses 2-handed swords was the job I was hoping to see the most and they delivered it! I'm so happy that they made this choice, I almost can't believe it xD
Btw Dark Knight was really the best option as a classic tank job: as a DPS it would have been a complete waste, especially since there are already too many DPS jobs (even more if you also consider rogue/ninja and a future gunner class).
The comment about it being a magic/parry/dodge tank worries me. Because that's what they tried to do with Rune Fencer in XI and they failed horribly because it struggles to survive physical based damage and the % reduction of Paladin's cooldowns/shields just totally outclass its resistance to magic damage. It could turn into 2.0 Warrior all over again if they don't balance it properly (Being different does not make you better, or even preferable as a niche case). Nobody is going to care if you're only taking like 1/3 of the magical damage from Megaflare or whatever if Ravensbeak is doing 2/3 more (Than a standard tank). Most of the attacks in this game that are actually expected to kill tanks are large or continuous physical hits (Death Sentence, Ravensbeak, Bahamut's Claws, Mountain Buster, Hood Swing, Double Wicked Wheel). Being resistant to magic damage more than physical damage doesn't help you survive any of that. The only thing it does help you with are reduce the damage to things like Earthen Heart, Mega Flare, Avatar Lasers/Mines in T8...none of which is really expected to kill the tank with the exception of some unfortunate mine juggling in T8.
Someone who actually uses their brain when reading that statement! And not jumping on the 'get rid of the classes/yay no classes anymore' train!
Sure, adjustments here and there will be nice, but getting rid of the current classes? You'll be butchering the lore and backstories of three city-states to the point that history may as well take a dump people obviously don't care for it. Asides from PLD, none of the jobs have ANY special history with the three starter city-states. Let's use Gridania as an example~
Gridania's lore involving the elementals will be utterly destroyed if Conjurer got removed. You can hardly say its easy to replace conjurers with White Mages considering their powers have a substantial difference, with White Mage already established a source of their power (Amdapor City) and how Conjurers have a deep history with interactions of the forest's elementals.. If DRGs were to replace Lancers? May as well cut out the entire history of Wood Wailers then, because Dragoons came from Ishgard, so congratulations, you just eliminated a third of Gridania's battle force!
I don't mind adjustments. I want jobs themselves to have more prominent features and skills, but cutting out the class system is not an option.
It's not hard to imagine why DRK may not require a class. Of Limsa Lominsa, Gridania, Ul'dah and Ishgard, Ishgard is the one city-state which ties a job so heavily into its history that it doesn't have a base class in its city of origin; Dragoon. Or if it does, it's expected by lore for Dragoons to lead the war against the Dravanian Horde, so it remains a big part of Ishgard. Seeing this, it won't be hard to imagine the expansion having other cities with heavy roots with jobs instead of classes.
great DK was a tank we need more cool tanks, and this is not ffXI so please people, stop to want this game to be another game
Maybe. Of the two, I'd rather have had DRK be the DD, I think; but time will tell. Honestly, neither of them make me think of tanks, but a lot of the posters here were sure that one or both (or neither) would become a tank. I'm not averse to the idea, so I'm taking it in stride.
Of course, there's still an opportunity for SE to make SAM a magic DPS job. :)
No base class? Could we finally get rid of the others then?
Shame about awkwardly shoving everything into the 3 role system. But great swords are a tempting offer.
no Scythe weapon? maybe will a add the scythe.
Makes what they did with Summoner and Scholar just appear awkward and forced at this point since it looks like they're going to just do away with the diverging class thing altogether at this point.
I love XI, but Dark Knights have always traditionally been sword users. Either one-handers in IV or great swords in X-2 or XI. Yoshi-P even said a long time ago that he didn't understand why they would use Scythes.
