Assuming I don't play in full screen. I should be able to search for class/rank appropriate gear and compare stats without needing to leave the game and have multiple browser windows open to work around a poor interface. This thread isn't about the interface though so I'm not going to say any more about it here. I was merely stating one reason why I personally don't care about gear stats when I'm buying equipment and I'm sure there are others that feel the same way.
The combination of the poor interface and the fact that gear doesn't matter leads me to favor fashion over optimal stats. I don't really care what anyone else is wearing unless I think it looks neat and gives me ideas for my own outfit.
EDIT: If gear mattered, I would begrudgingly research it online before making my purchases as I did in XI. Or, if the interface was convenient to use - I would buy whatever I could find with the best stats for my rank. I just don't want to put a ton of effort into finding the most optimal gear when it doesn't make a difference. Buying for fashion is currently easier, more fun, and doesn't have an impact on my performance.
There's a fine line of having ok gear and looking decent vs gear that is slightly better and looking like a complete moron.
Seriously I wouldn't wear Harlequin gear it looks so stupid. Jester outfit no thanks. I'll take regular gear any day.
As far as the game is now, gear makes little difference in combat besides hp. Besides, part of an MMO is playing "dress up" with your character. That said, I'll dress my girl as lady or ho'ish as I please.
What anime is that
Easy to say something like this. But what if that person plays a major role in your party and you die a lot, waste time standing around only cause of that one person not being able to fill the role, cause he rather wants to wear this shiny Wooden shield with a nice little relief on it, rather than the plate shield which actually prevents him from dieing.
Will you have fun in such a party?
I will tell you this and that's based on my experience. The most fun I ever had in MMOs was when I played with people who actually cared about performing well in a group. That doesn't imply good gears only, just the fact that people actually cared about maintaining a base performance in the group so it does well. With groups like these, you are able to chat in between, cause it won't do much. With groups like these you are able to laugh about someone dieing rather than being grudgy about someones lack of whatever made him die. With groups like these you will remember the "good" times in groups once you will be part of a group that I set as an example at the beginning.
Fun comes from doing something that feels nice to do and is even better if your with other people that have fun as well.
Now tell me...which would be your prefered scenario.
1. Playing in a group where everybody is aware of what hes doing and tries to perform well for the sake of the group.
2. Playing in a group that looks all fashionable but dies frequently, cause they rather look good, than play a game.
If you tell me now, you prefer second choice, you are either lieing, or one of those stated persons who rather look good than play a game. If you prefer the first choice, which is the only reasonable choice IN MY OPINION(thats MY opinion, I'm not telling anybody to think the same way) that makes it the choice that is more fun to you, cause why would you choose something willingly, if it's not the one that implies fun with it?
@charliesheen: What are you trying to achieve with that post quoting me? I'm well aware that there are people out there who ignore everything else, as long as people wear gear they should wear. My statement is about you pointing at those players being selfish that think other party members should wear gear thats useful for their class, when in fact those not wearing gear thats useful for their class ON PURPOSE(I'm not talking about the best HQ+3 whatever crap Bullshit) are the selfish persons. I don't think people who don't wear gear thats not useful for their class are the devil or such crap lmao. I don't attack those players out of the blue just cause they wear something that's not useful for their class. But if those players don't wear gear thats useful for their class ON PURPOSE and join parties and expect everybody else to drag them along, then I will either ask them to change to something that's useful and if they won't(this implies they COULD) to leave the group. I'm not playing this game to drag other people along, we're playing for the same reasons(to have fun), if you think your fun is more important than the fun of the others in the group you're not even selfish anymore, you're just being an ignorant and arrogant prick. If we're playing together it should be out of question to do things that will help the group for everyones benefit, cause that's what I will do as well and that's what I expect of everyone else as well. This is in fact a dream scenario, cause there are people who are not likeminded, but if everybody would think of the benefit of ALL instead of just their own, this world would be a better place.
And before this argument even comes up....I know this is just a game...but you are playing with real people, and just cause you're anonymous this shouldn't excempt you from basic etiquette.
When stats have little to no effect, that situation can't really happen. Who cares about hypothetical situations, the fact of he matter is gear doesn't matter a whole lot in this game, and for that matter neither does death.
I think the distinction should be between saying 'Hey you can't wear that!' and 'You shouldn't be wearing that if you can't do you job'. the latter seems more reasonable and fair.
I haven't been sacrificing good gear for fashion and its been leaving me ho hum feeling about my gear. Cooler mage gear please. I do hate when someone shows up to a party in crafting gear because its "prettier" than their mage robes.
Nobody really denied that gear right now has little to no effect and I see no problem with people wearing whatever in groups atm, cause it won't do much anyway.
But I'm not talking about hypotheical situations, I'm talking about basic behaviour of people playing this game. There is a chance that those people will actually change from "fashionable" to "useful" gear once stats do matter, but chance also is, they still go with fashion and give a fuck about the rest of the group. And those are the ones I'm talking about. They have the possibility of gearing up(and again, I'm not talking about HQ+3 best of the best) but they just don't WANT to and even the neccessity of working together with other players(let it be leves, NMs, dungeons whatever) doesn't let them even think about doing something that would cross with their sense of style. That's the most selfish crap you could do. You rely on other people to do well, while you are handicapping yourself on purpose. I don't want such players either in my group and yes not even on the server. I don't want racism and terror on the world too, it won't happen, so will it not in the game as well, but I can still "dream" of perfect conditions I guess. Discussions like these are actually meant to make those players think and maybe think about what they are doing affects other players. If you want to be fashionable and be glamorous in your gear do so, but once its effecting other people, go with what the game is supposingly giving you to not handicap yourself. You can be all fashion and style afterwards again when you're on your own.
And we do know that stats and their effect will change in the upcoming patches, so very soon it's not hypothetical anymore(assuming SE manages to get difficult or challenging fights into the game)
I would beg to differ that gear has no effect, the stats that come on it like +pie or +dex don't matter, but the mag def and def on a piece do matter. Mag def is my best friend as a mage, its the only reason why i eat magic attack other than emulate. I think acc isn't broken either but I'd need verification on it.
please... take your elitism back to FFXI. gear means shit here.. I know ppl that wont wear a subligar on their male character cause it looks like tightie-wighties even though that subligar has maybe one more DEX than the pants. Your telling me that that one DEX is going to make or break a party?? The parties you're starting must suck.
*sigh* read all posts before making a ragefest please. You've completely missed the point and instead decided to toss the word "elitism" around like it's a toy.
Cuz ummm its true.
Honestly those guys and gals. I never seen or had gear make or break a party. It was the actuall skill. Stats on gear never meant anything in any mmo I played it gave just a possible 5% increase Which isn't truely needed. Here is the thing you guys like Crey etc use the term job in a literal sence, please don't. Its a video game stop being so Type A over other people. I played ffxi in the some of the best and worst gear and in the same set up as everyone else. I honestly saw no difference in my "job doing". People can ware the best gear and be level 50 or 100 in every class in mmo and still suck. Its all in attitude. Try to "solo in a party" and you will die because your not being a team player. Instead of kicking the "gimpy geared person" change up your routine maybe back off a bit.
All in all work for your party instead of making your party work for you. Or just gracefully leave. The only stats that matter is attack for weapons and defence for armor. Those + stats do not amount to much and only suppliment your base stats. You also should consider that gear in any mmo with a player created economy or relies heafty on a AH like thing such as market wards gear may be hard to come by on occassion. I've always had issues getting gear in ffxi either too $$$$$ or none were up.
( which is why i laugh at the AH bs debate AH are no better or wost then what we have )
I cant being to count the people I knew that had "town gear" in XI. I myself had certain pieces I would wear just cause I liked the look more so when i was strolling through town or out and about. As well I would ignore certain armor sets as I played the game because though they might be a bit better, if they looked ugly I didn't want to wear them.
So far in XIV I have hurried to get a different armor piece or swapped for something slightly "worse" just because I hate the look.
I refused to wear Hauberk and Haubergeon style armors because everyone else did, Instead I focused on full sets like the Sipahni and Unicorn set. I always looked bad ass in parties, and no one could ever say I wasn't doing my job because I never used normal job combos anyway.
LOL SAM/DNC And I'm main healing? Sure!
If you read my posts again you will notice that I never used the term job even once. I use the term class on purpose, cause that's what they are called. If they would be called jobs, as in XI, I would call them jobs. This doesn't mean that I'm thinking of a "class" or job with your words in a literal sense. But if you're doing something, don't you try to do it good, cause it will make you feel more accomplished(and therefore more fun)? That's what I do at least and this is what makes it fun to me. And every serious MMO has gear that makes a huge difference. FFXI had such thigns as well. Try to let a PLD tank Bahamut v2(not the zergfest, the way the battle was meant to be and done at the beginning) with less than 1600+ HP. Chances are, he will die a lot. BLMs in Bahamut v2 needed a shitton of Elemental Magic Skill+, cause his resistance was horrible. BRDs had a hard time Finale-ing Bahamut v2s Protect/Shell without the Skill+ Equip, or even a Gjallarhorn.
Try Dynamis Xarcabards Wall of Death w/o BLMs with a LOT of Enfeebling Magic+, cause chances are, if one Sleepga misses, the whole group will be dead. If you never played an MMO that had a real difference between wearing crap and good gear, you either played none of the major MMOs, or you never played the "hardcore" Endgame content, that didn't just expect skill from a player, but also gear.
And you seem to miss my whole point of the discussion. The people wearing gimpy gear ON PURPOSE(I think I need to repeat this like a hundred times for people to notice it) are the ones being selfish and that's all I really talked about. I never talked about gimply geared players being dumb, or bad, or got no skill or w/e. I talked about gimpy geared persons who wear gimpy gear on purpose AND joins parties, although they could wear better gear, are the ones being selfish, cause they put their personal fashion above the benefit of the group. And as soon as you join a group of players PARTY>SINGLE PERSON and if you don't think that way you shouldn't play an MMO in the first place.
Id also like to point out that I just went to the markets to buy a new frypan and knife and it turns out that a royal kitchen skillet is 150k+ while a bomb frypan is 90k (even saw one for 53k but wasn't fast enough:(). i also bought the mythril knife for 50k as opposed to an iron knife for 150k. are both these thing WAY above my rank? yes but they were also half the price. The price competition is ironically causing the high-lvl gear to be cheaper than the mid level stuff. the choice is obvious to me.
I have to step in here and say, in FFXI wearing good gear was the difference between your character being truly good, and not. That's not to say there wasn't alternatives to the norm as shown by cairdeas, but if you wore crap gear, chances are your WS would miss, or your debuff wouldn't land.
I think the whole point of this topic is that someone stated they think people shouldn't be "allowed" to wear whatever they want to wear, and implied that wearing anything that isn't the most optimal meant you would suck. For a IN GENERAL GAMING opinion, I think most people, even those who like to wear something cause it looks cool, would agree that wearing all completely crap gear is a terrible idea. But when it comes to this game in particular, as others have pointed out countless times now, the stats mean close to nothing.
So should people be "allowed" to wear what they want, in THIS GAME? Sure.
Hello my name is Krausus and I where Mosshorn Scale Mail instead of a Vintage Hauby I am a drag on my parties and an all around baddie because of it.
