From what I can tell, players want what seems like the path of least resistance - whether it's only in their minds or not. Seems easier to get an NPC to repair your armor with a few clicks compared to having to gain exp again. People simply don't logically rationalize to themselves what's actually involved in each penalty.
Everyone says the times have changed. But for MMO's they really haven't. The people playing the games have changed, that's all.
Applying realism to a Fantasy game is most certainly realistic. People just automatically conclude that once the game has something that's pure fantasy NONE of the game can be realistic, which is false. Some things it's not possible to be realistic, such as magic, but other things it is.
I personally have no issue with gear damage, or xp loss, or whatnot on death. As much as some types like to hate on them, they do serve a purpose.
I also remember endless threads complaining about exp loss back in those days so no matter what you have for a penalty it either will be too much or not enough or something :P
