ARR/Heavensward Fishing RNG could use a nerf.

And this is that this class is the only one in the game where you can't. It's the one class outside of the norm where choosing to expend effort into reaching the current max level does not help you.

Maybe if there was a way to make repeat catches easier perhaps so the challenge exists mostly for the first ever catch of the fish?

The best way I can describe fishing's RNG is this.

I know someone who was doing lucis weapons for all 3 of his gatherers. Sure he had to get gear good enough for the unspoiled nodes (and at the time he didn't have SB/HW bought, only ARR).
Miner unspoiled nodes? Done, fairly easily. Lucis acquired in like a week.
Botanist unspoiled nodes? Done, fairly easily. Lucis acquired in like a week.
Now for fisher you have to catch a big fish.
Got the gear, had a hard time. Got SB expansion, raised level to get even better gear, tried again. Still nothing. He was at it for days, he did the research on when and how to catch said fish and all of that. Nope. Gave up for a while, came back to it.
It has now been a few months, still hasn't gotten the Lucis fish despite being well above the stats to catch it.

That is the power of RNG that affects fishing but doesn't affect miner/botanist. The other 2 gatherers can up gear to overcome difficulties, but fisher is still reliant on a secondary RNG.
I get that people did it in the past, and I'm glad they were able to succeed, but fisher is definitely more unfair because of that extra RNG and the ARR ones somehow feel like the unfairest RNG of them all.

The only thing I'd like to see changed is the removal of the upper limit on the catch rate on older fish. I recently did the "Feast Of Famine" quest with Lv70 gear (not because I care about fishing, but just because I'm completing all side-quests), and I lost my Namitaro catch EIGHT TIMES before I managed to pull it up the 9th time I hooked it. I don't see any reason why content this old still has these catch rate caps, when the stats are so much higher these days.

For a fish where I have to wait for a weather condition, pull up fish with a ~2% hook rate, and then I have a 1-minute window to catch the fish I'm really after... I'm fine with that RNG upon RNG, but that last bit of having such a low catch rate on top of it all is a real kick in the balls considering how old this content is.

They've nerfed the supra/lucis tools. You can buy all 3 tools directly from calamity salvager if you've done at least 1 tool.

I was wondering the same after I spent 50+ windows on sea butterfly, which I think the hardest to catch fish in the game with low bait and catch rate, and there are only 3-4 attempts every window with a lot of preparation for short intuition buff. Then I finally caught it and read it's description
"Though oft referred to as king of the skies near Mok Oogl Island, to claim this floating mollusk is elusive would be a gross understatement. So rare are these mollusks that seeing one is widely believed to bring good fortune."
You see, some fish have low catch rate on purpose, because you need to catch it once in your lifetime and move on. If you can complete all fishing log in 1 week, you'll have nothing left to do in this area, and devs obviously don't want it. It's an MMO and players should always have some things to do. When they don't, they unsub.

I'd be happy with Veteran Trade working with regular fishing, even if it's timed. At least I'd be happy until I found something else to complain about.

Didn't know that, but I hardly see how having a way to just buy it outright is somehow relevant to the point about catching that fish.

It still doesn't change that he still has yet to catch that fish, which is also used to complete the fishing log. By contrast it's a lot easier to finish getting all the checkmarks for miner/botanist, especially with higher level gear.

There's also another fish, not related to any weapons, just for the sake of completion, he has yet to get from ARR despite spending a lot of time trying to get it but the RNG catch rate is so bad and the windows being so small because of time/weather just make matters worse, but I can assure you he's gotten all of the miner/botanist ARR items with ease.

Here's the thing, you hooked him NINE times. This tells me you were using Patience/Patience 2 and hooksets to give you more opportunities in the given window. Take those abilities away, and you might not even get an opportunity to catch him. That is how it was before those abilities were introduced, and Namitaro was a hated ARR fish prior to HW because not only did you have to catch Giant Takitaro, he needed to be HQ as well. Now, the only thing that makes Namitaro difficult IS the catch rate. And you want this reduced also?

If I was a dev, I would have actually decreased the catch rate so he can still live up to the name "Legendary Fish."
