Well to be fair, the East Coast does have double the population of the West Coast. I suppose more voices would make it louder. Honestly, they should have stuck it in Chicago or Texas, but I figure some money saving is related to the Sacramento choice.

Is this true? Do we actually know how many people play east/west of the Mississippi or The Rockies? If so, where can I find such information? Or is this all based on conjecture?

It's just conjecture if we're going player only basis. If we're going by actual population, the East Coast has at least 115 million residents while the West has about 50-60 million.

Don't forget about the eastern side of the central states, that a huge population too negatively effected by this, not just the the most eastern part of the USA. I would bet everything I own that there is a larger population that was mild to severely negative impacted, then those this helped. (Don't forget EU, south America, etc as well)

I'm on east coast playing on balmung.. I've had 0 issues with lag. Rotations are just fine, movement is fine, getting out of aoes, no issues.. Sounds like it's more a routing issue than physical location on the user end. Not saying it's the players' fault for the lag, but it sounds like it's something on their end opposed to on the data center end

To be fair, Comcast is the largest provider on the East Coast and their routing IS pretty trash. I can knock it down below 100 for me using vpns, though.

One thing is for sure, going from Montreal to Sacramento is one extreme to the other.

Extremes are never good, never a true resolution, compromises need to be made, it is time they look at the coding. No reason to wait eons for lusterate to work, and monsters get no animation delay.

Not entirly true, many bosses have animation delays, which is why groups dont wipe on ultima in dun scaith when supernova goes off just before he dies.

What I am talking about also exists as low as 35 ping (from who I talk to) and the people that seem to understand are calling it "intentional delays" Why are they there? what purpose do they serve other then annoying people that can see them that happen to increase in problems as the ping increases for anything over 70 ms.

I went from 100-110 to 200-220... Germany

The game feels "ok" while half america is still asleep and EU is at work but in EU prime time i can always count "one... two..." before i see anything happen :(

So I just checked my ping. 250-290. Game is still 100% perfectly playable, but then I never really experienced 0 ping so I have no idea what I've been missing~

Well... I first started FFXIV on the PS3, so my biggest issue was dealing with lag (hence my response to the Titan gif. That was frustrating). Then the PS4 version came out and I got that and my latency 'improved' and then I got a gaming PC and noticed even less latency (or it was all a placebo).

Basically, the changes I noticed were based on the systems I've played FFXIV on. Once I got on the PC, my latency seemingly improved and I haven't had any issues with anything in game (save for the occasional hiccup when everyone starts port-running and my Sharpcast buff doesn't activate when I use it). I also mostly only play BLM and my oGCD's aren't as frequent as other Jobs.

If things like this happened more often, then I would be VERY annoyed (this is the Sharpcast not happening despite it going on cooldown). This happened during a surprise lag spike.

Ah, that's what you meant. Yeah, that's just something I've learned to adjust to. It's annoying, especially when I'm trying to get a Swiftcast Bliz IV down but instead start hardcasting it (not frequent), but it's something I've had since launch.

I have many complaints with FFXIV, but latency isn't that high as it's something I expect (Australian). What will always stay at the top of my complaint list is the fact we have to pay our sub/Mogstation purchases in EUR and not in AUD (12.99EUR is $19.44AUD). SE plz

My latency actually improved from the previous location. I can actually dodge the second boss of Sohm Al Hard's claw swipes. Before, it was nearly impossible with my latency.

I don't know what it was before, but my current 88 is lower than what it used to be. I'm actually dodging more things I couldn't before.

Actually it's very plausible, the move hardly affected most of my friends, but when I ran with one of my linkshell members from Canada we noticed they were getting stuck in a lot more AoEs when previously they were a very sharp reacted player. If they are unable to play on that same competitive level then they will have to find a group on a lower competitive level where their ping doesn't matter as much. When these things happen, there are no spiteful or hard feelings, it is just business.

I don't play at that level but I have met who do, and they are always professional about those situations. The person being kicked may even stay friends with the rest of the group and may still party with them in less stressful content or share information at later dates.

tl;dr Just because a static kicked someone for high ping doesn't mean they are horrible people. There's a different behavioral standard.

As for ways of reducing ping, VPN's to optimize your connection. I did a pathping in the cmd and noticed that my connection was getting routed all over the US (it even went back and forth between two states repeatedly for some reason). My ping before the move was 70-80 ms and now it is 110-130. With a VPN, I can get it to 80-100 ms (I route my connection to a node in San Jose from which it then goes straight to the game servers if my VPN's data is correct).

As for my personal recommendation for a VPN, I use Mudfish since the price is rather cheap. It is pay per traffic with 70 mb costing a penny. I played for roughly 12 hours today and my balance went down by only 4 cents. So assuming if I were to play for 12 hours a day for a whole month (30 days), I would only be paying $1.20 a month. Compare this to my previous VPN, Wtfast, which charged me $5 a month regardless of how much I used it, Mudfish is a better value. They also give you your first penny free to test it out before you commit. Just make sure you aren't patching the game with the VPN turned on.

Oh, and I believe Mudfish is a South Korean company if that matters to anyone.

I get under 200. From Finland. The comparison to trying to play on potato was good one. To play internet game you need to have proper equipment for it which includes reasonable internet connection. If the server location they now have gives half a ping to a person double your distance, it's on you.

I think one of the problems with FFXIV is probably tick rate. Someone compared it to WoW here. I think that's the source of a lot of problems, and ping and packet loss just exacerbate the problem, because the way TCP works is that when a packet is lost, the server knows because of the sequence number and a timer so it requests the client to resend it. And then there's also congestion which may delay the packet or drop it at a router. That's fine for stuff like file transfers because you don't need the data right away, but I think it leads to problems in this scenario.

Why does OP say "business", when he just means "competition"?

And why are others arguing the fact that there are groups out there who joined this competition and have relativly strict selection criteria?

When I join a group by Chaos Raiding Central all members are not suddenly BFFs of mine and maybe we never get "close" at all. So ofc I'd get kicked if performance was an issue if group was advertised as a group who wants to compete with others for fast kills.

Funny is, People here are treating those few dozen "fast"/"pro" groups like an average group of fc members or other people you knowm like "OMG, you're kicking a best buddy just because he got minor ping increase? You're mean people and shouldn't play this funny, relaxing game!!!!"

They not quitted friendship, they kicked him out of the competition for not being competitive. Why do people mix that up?

I myself have a "serious" group consisting mostly of people I don't know on a "personal" level with my main and if I want to raid with my friends/fc (while lockout still in place) I use my alt.
If I get kicked with my main because of performance, I'd have to look for a group with lower standards, which I'd certainly find.

Bad for me, but certainly no "OMG, the world is so cruel and people are mean! *cry*"

Double weaving is more than possible with 100ms ping, which I had for all on 3.0. It's a slight bit easier with 50ms ping, since there's more wiggle room, which is what I have now since the server move. My 175ping back in 2.0 is when double weaving was impossible without clippings a bit. I'd wager that 150 is about the highest you can go and still be able to double weave.

As for noticing a difference, I definitely do between 45 and 90. That said, the difference is extremely small. The biggest difference is being able to stutter step at 60% of the cast bar instead of needing to wait until 75% without interrupting myself. There's also a smoother feel at 45 ping that feels a tad more responsive, but it never felt UNresponsive at 90 ping, so it's just shades of acceptable levels of responsiveness really.

If your not afk or offline, or harassing someone then its a reportable offense.

From Viña del Mar, Chile (South America) I had around 200-220 before, now I'm getting around 370-380.

To not take you to a raid?
If you cant bring 100% of what the class you play can do why take you over some one that can?
