Oh my apologies, I took the question at face value, that make sense now!
One time I *did* get to commend everyone was when I was running Palace of the Dead 50-100 with a 'matched party' and kept getting the same three people each time! All working really well together (and I think we had a "standard party" setup) so I could give the commendation to a different person after each set of floors. :D
I had a party tonight with a rather... ah... troll-like individual. Among their various irritating comments were a number of messages along the lines of "go faster." Use Sprint, that sort of thing.
From the get-go, this struck me as particularly absurd, given they were using a level 68, i285 weapon in Hells' Lid (side note: can we all agree that sub-70 gear should bar entry to Expert Roulette?), but whatever. Then came the first boss, which we slowly whittled down, and again came the comment... "alright guys, let's hurry this up"... followed by this individual running the exact wrong direction out of the boss room ^^;;;
We eventually kicked them for the trolling commentary, but watching them run squarely in the wrong direction while telling everyone to go faster is a moment that I'll chuckle about for quite some time.
Yesterday got Stone Vigil with my DRK. Got a DRG, SCH and SMN as teammates.
DRG was new and told her I would explain all the bosses and she did really well.
But the other two were apparently together and wanted me to aggro everything. Now I don't mind trying big aggroes but I don't do that in that dungeon because of my experience. Whether I was a tank or not, it always ended badly (might be me though but still..)
So you know that big room before the first boss ? The SMN aggroed everything, while I was fighting the 3 mobs in the hallway. I aggro every mob except for one which killed him.
After the fight, and after he was rezzed, I told them : "So what did we learn ? Never do that ever again."
And they listened and never complained again. The rest of the run was smooth and the DRG was able to watch her CS and have fun.
So yeah, tbh, I had a grin on my face when they didn't try to aggro more, thinking they were scared of me letting a mob kill them.
Now for a story of my own: A couple of days ago I was clearing Deltascape normal on my WAR on Leviathan and the following happened in o4:
I zoned in and noticed that the other WAR had over 70k HP (in defiance), so I ask if he wanted to solo tank assuming the healers were also OK with it. He says okay and pulls. Someone quipped about me not wanting to OT, but the fight was started by then so I didn't respond (if I queue tank I'm always ready to tank if needed). Shortly into phase 3, the mt dies, so I immediately provoke into a bb combo...and don't get hate from the bard due to being in deliverance. I swap to defiance and use ib followed by another bb combo, but the bard dies before I can get aggro. Next thing I see is this:
(bard): you're a **** tank, erim.
I respond by asking him to examine me after the fight. Somehow, we wipe a moment later (about another full minute), so I mention that I'm i315 with an i310 weapon. Someone asks if that's good or bad, so I respond "mostly neutral". This pull goes better despite the MT dying at about the same point again (*glares at the healers for not speaking up about not being ready to keep a solo tank up in there*), and we clear.
No comms, but I didn't expect any after that mess.

Stop emergency healing and learn the fight so you can precast heals before the damage happens. If people are making the same mistakes repeatedly, remove them.
The ghost is supposed to take ages to kill as a healer. Either have your party cheese the ghost phase or let the ghost kill itself. AST especially cant burn it.
You were struggling with Prey, werent you? Were your tanks mitigating it? Divine Veil or Shake it Off isn't optional. Make them use it or remove them. Either skill can be available for every Prey with proper use. Proper mitigation saves healers gcds, which is raid dps increase. Unless you have a specific strategy with these skills this is a simple way to use them. Don't be that guy that never uses it.
So something that surprised me.
Got Titan Hard with my DRK. Other tank was a PLD and he went MT. So me being OT, I do my DPS combo with Darkside and Soul-eater and stuff.
The fight went really well and at the end I got 4 comms and I honestly don't know why...but in a good way.
Maybe it's because I did a good job ? or maybe because I rushed to save the people imprisoned into the stone cages ?
I dunno. All I could say was "waoh..." when frankly I didn't do anything amazing.
Got Cutter's Cry on the roulette this morning as a Dark Knight. We had a Bard that demanded we do a speed run and kept pulling enemies even though I was the tank. Ended up dying first in the corridor leading to the first boss because he pulled the second group before I was ready for them.
Got past the first boss but in the next area I go to pull the first mob and Bard tells the rest of the party to ignore the mobs and run for the portal, after I have started the pull, and they end up pulling a few more enemies in the process. I try to catch up with them but when I go to click portal the pop-up keeps getting canceled because of the mob auto-attacks and since it is eight against one I end up dying since the healer is in another part of the dungeon. End up back at the starting point with all the mobs between me and the rest of the party still alive.
How do you deal with something like that?
I haven't healed o5s on AST but I generally clear with a Noct AST and myself on WHM. The big thing she does is gets off shields prior to Acid Rain or Prey and preplaces Earthly Star so it has the 10 seconds to mature before healer and tank prey combos.
She places Earthly Star in the top left corner, tank drops his prey in the top right then runs to the group stacked at the top left. Prey goes off, Earthly Star detonates and heals everyone up before the following Acid Rain.
This way no one (apart from the healer with prey who tuns to the back) has to disengage and tanks don't have to swap or be healed through successive Connectivity pulses. You have to be on point as the healer up front with the group in healing the tank up between Doom Strike and Prey detonation but it's still easier and more dps-friendly than a tank running all the way to the back of the train.
Good luck with the future!
Either by telling the bard to stop being so whiny or by kicking him because he's the wrong here. Or leave if you can't deal with that BS.
I had my share of toxic bards and first I start by warning them and if they continue, I try to kickvote. If that doesn't work I quit.
Oh, I told him to stop. In fact the bard suffered the same fate I did in the second lake area and got knocked out. So I say in the chat that maybe you shouldn't pull half the dungeon to the portal and then just go on through without killing them since it almost guarantees some of the party won't be able to follow immediately, wiping out whatever gains you had in time. The bard replies with something along the lines of "How about you just let me have the aggro". Then he proceeds to do the same thing again. After getting knocked out the second time I guess he finally realized that he wasn't getting his speed run and quit pulling enemies.
For somebody wanting a speed run his antics probably ended up adding a good 10-15 minutes to the time it took to complete the dungeon.
Wait...he wanted to have the aggro of every mob he aggroed ? That's hilarious

I normally don't speed run certain low level dungeons as tanks becuase in some of them the enemies hit really really hard for their level, like Brayflox.
Funny you should mention Brayflox. Twice this week I have ended up as a replacement tank for a party in progress that was still in the starting area of the Longstop. I asked the other party members what happened to the first tank and both times it was roughly the same thing. My predecessors tried to pull everything in that area before the bird boss and when that didn't work out too good they left.
Just tell them you want to do it properly, if they don't agree then vote kick, if that doesn't work then leave I noticed a comment and...
I'd like to encourage you not to be this person, "I refuse to do my job because of xxx person"
Tiny Rant of my own I guess (duty finder)
I went into a Totorak on leveling roullete, the tank just ran through everything failing to pick up all adds while I were somehow keeping them alive (Lightspeed)
my partner pulls Titan, some tank pet too you know try and help with that.
the tank continues running dies...(yes after I died) and is like...
"If you want to tank go ahead, I'm not going to tank" though I would have preferred to settle it peacefully I just kicked them and said nothing, not being in the mood to deal with it.
Like please if you have a problem with an individual then make it personal 1 on 1 don't pull everybody else into your mood swings, I shouldn't have to suffer while you don't have a problem with me >_<
Well, in the case of Brayflox, it's more 'most DPS don't even have a proper AoE rotation yet' and 'healers don't have access to any off-GCD heals/regens yet unless you're playing Astrologian'.
I always laugh at any tank that tries to mass pull in early level dungeons without the presence of a ranged DPS.
Oh, I have never actually left a duty or refused to do what is expected of me because of issues with another member of the team I am on. Thought about it once or twice, even threatened to do it once, but I would feel bad about doing something like leaving two dps sprouts on their first run through Stone Vigil just because the healer and I were not getting along.
Agreed, I am the kind of person who would rather spend an extra ten, twenty seconds killing the dungeon trash then risk a potential one or two minute delay because some party members luck didn't hold on this trick. Besides, xp is xp.
My guildhest went spectacularly awful today, and it was entirely my fault.
My alt-character arcanist has just graduated to scholar. (Despite being a Lv70 summoner I've barely used scholar, and intend to learn it properly with him.) Went through two early-game dungeons where Eos handled 90% of the healing, so still not really used to thinking of my previously-DPS arcanist as a healer, and decided to try a guildhest to get something higher-level but not high stakes.
What could possibly go wrong?
Got "More Than A Feeler" - probably my least favourite guildhest. DoTs on the morbol, try to pop some bubbles that are getting through (preventative healing, right?), realise the tank is dying because I lost focus.
Panicked healing but I'm too slow to save them - I cast Raise but now everything's onto me instead so it's my turn to die.
And so begins a revolving-door effect as we take turns to die, respawn and draw aggro.
The morbol is out of the swamp and up on the bank where we start.
I've lost my faerie and hit the wrong button trying to re-summon it, casting my raise macro-and-announcement on the boss instead.
I am feeling terrible and I don't think I ever got it properly back under control, but it seems that guildhests (without the 'boss room lockout' in place) don't necessarily wipe and start over like dungeons do - although the boss's health seemed to reset as some point.
We make it through anyway, somehow, and I can only grovel and apologise afterwards. Got sympathy pats from the tank, and somehow a (probably also sympathy) commendation - I certainly didn't earn it with my battle performance....
(Oh, and Tiroro has different dialogue after a performance like that - something to the effect of "that was brilliant, I love watching dramatic battles!")
Maybe not appropriate for this thread since this was PF, not DF, but I need to vent and I have nowhere else to do so.
I joined a Byakko EX kill party for fun and to practice PLD a bit, I ended up having to MT despite the fact that we had a WAR roughly as well geared as I was.
I noticed we also had a NIN in our party so I thought I could get away with not doing my aggro combo as long as I did Holy Spirit + Goaring Blade in Shield Oath, but much to my surprise I did not actually get a Shadewalker and as a result the boss slapped the DPS around for a bit before I got control of him again, but that didn't stop the condescending comments right afterwards about having to stay in tank stance, doing my aggro combo, stop pretending to be DPS, etc, etc...
One of them even boasted about their iL even though it was the same as mine (and I'm using crafted accessories on my tanks).
I keep the aggro on the boss roughly the whole time after that with some help from the WAR who was gracious enough to Shirk me once in a while, and we proceed to kill him in one pull in spite of the difficulties at the start, yet despite of this after we clear they're STILL chastising me for the loss of aggro, and I just want to add that I didn't see one Shadewalker or Smokescreen, not that I'm blaming the Ninja but you know, it would have helped to use everyone's enmity abilities.
They even told me that I was lucky to have an off tank that Shirked me... I thought that was meant to be common practice? Like isn't that what the ability is there for? I don't get why using hate control abilities is considered a luxury when all it does is help raid DPS and make runs go by faster...
Anyway sorry for the rant, again I just needed to vent about this, it might have been a small inconsequential thing but it triggered me more than it should have I guess lol
Queue up for Bardam's Mettle, my first time with my PLD alt, working on getting her through the story.
I queue in prog 30 mins, on the last boss and I do what I always do when I queue in progress. "Hello, having trouble?"
There is a MNK and a BLM.
The MNK types in say chat "Yeah, the healer was awful."
I don't say anything else after that and we wait and get a healer. We get a 70 healer that says it's their first time.
XD It didn't go smoothly at all, the dps was slow.
The MNK would run across the room and away from the boss for every aoe, I'm just rolling my eyes.
The heal gets hit by the confuse every single time, and I'm doing my best to keep up with heals on myself and the party.
I die. The healer dies. but it's at like 1% and the DPS manage to do it.
Either way. I have a feeling it wasn't just the healer that was the problem in the run before.
D:> I don't know if it's cause it's the slow down between patches, but I've gotten a lot of awful groups in content over the last month. Like much more than usual.
I have a PF story, only this time I'm the one at fault here. I feel so bad...
So anyway I organize a Byakko ex farming party, and we que in. Throughout the fight, the RDM keeps dying and I have to keep raising him over and over. Eventually we wipe. Now it was probably the fact that I was farming Byakko ex all day that was causing me to be a little irritable, but I said in chat, "(RDM)... I'm sorry to say this, but you have to go."
Commence everyone leaving duty, and back in the overworld, salty comments ensue. Half the party leaves, and one person says something along the lines of, "the RDM kept dying because no one world stack with him. I assume he just gave up after a while lol."
At this point I realize his deaths were MY fault because I forgot I was paired up with him. I thought I was stacking with the other group.
If the RDM I'm talking about is reading this, I'm so, so sorry. Please forgive me :(
Decided to run leveling roulette as AST to get that cracked cluster and ended up in Sirensong. Got a PLD, BRD and RDM. There were no hellos, I got the feeling they were all together from the way the RDM said brb and the tank said k. After we got off the ship I started funneling the cards to the RDM because I saw them casting scatter and the BRD didn’t even keep straight shot up. This ended up being a bamboozle anyway, they probably hit scatter on accident because it was single target the rest of the way.
I’m throwing out gravity’s like nothing else and my MP is dropping. I’m giving myself ewers and using lucid on cool down but it’s not enough, my MP is on life support the entire run.We get to the last couple packs when I remember the DPS could be helping my MP situation, so I asked if they can throw me a mana shift or refresh? Radio silence. One last attempt - “if you don’t have them, you should. Your healers will appreciate you.” Nada.
At that point I just shrugged - 3 can play that game. We are at the last boss now. The DPS only got residual heals from me casting aspected Helios and I ate all the cards myself. The BRD died while casting LB near the end of the fight, choosing to finish it instead of moving out of the AoE. I chose to stand on their corpse casting malefics.
Petty? Sure, I’m fine with that. :) They were from the same server, I found out when I checked after leaving.
I decided to level Pug/Monk from 15 to 50 (plan to do the other melee DPS next) and I've heard that damage dealers usually don't get comms often. I wasn't swimming in them from 15 to 50, but I got several, including at least one double commendation; yet, it was all just running basic dungeons and I never did anything heroic (or so bad to earn a pity comm). Someone I mentioned this to told me they thought it was because I used things like Arm of the Destroyer and Rockbreaker, but I suspect it was just random or because they were not happy with the tank or healer. Is AoE from Monks really that uncommon?
I thought I was the only one....I started leveling a monk myself...and I've been swimming in commendations.
All I've been doing is spamming /bstance as I love the kick my char does and just making sure I don't get turned into a smear on the floor. AoE's and other crits when possible.
Maybe we're a rare breed? not sure.
Could be my glamour lol...not sure.
Incredibly, in my experience. I'm usually surprised when most DPS (aside SMN) actually AoE appropriately. This feels like even more of a rarity among melee DPS. Plus, back when I mained MNK (I do kinda miss it) I remember reading a lot of threads about AotD being useless and how MNKs shouldn't use it, etc. It's not our prettiest skill, but given the right conditions, it actually should be used in AoE situations.
If I were partied up with you and saw you AoE'ing like a champ on your MNK, I'd definitely comm. you!
I always feel like quoting this kind of comments because I'm still shocked with the high amount of DPS that will never AoE.
Last night I was spamming Skalla on PLD, because I needed a couple of glamour pieces from there that I thought I had. Out of the 8 runs I did I had both NINs and MNKs that would never AoE. A weak AF RDM that was doing 3k-ish DPS on big pulls (No idea how) and 1.4k on bosses. The last 2 runs, I asked a SMN friend to come with me, feeling bad for pulling him into this DF hell -.- He was doing great. On the other hand, I had 2 BRDs that would never EVER AoE at all, or use Refresh or Tactician. We were on Discord and my friend even noticed that one of them wasn't even using regular songs. I also had the mandatory 0 DPS healer that was just standing there spamming Benefic on me, even if I was using Hallowed Grounds.
I switched to RDM when stormblood came out and recently made an alt to play WHM on, and so far every red mage I've seen while running expert on my white mage just... didn't aoe properly. It hurt my soul to see the tank gather together a big pull, then while I'm spamming holy this guy runs up and does a single target melee combo on something.
Just, ahhhhh! Use enchanted moulinet! It's a dps gain over single target melee combo at 3 or more targets!
Got Rabanasty for alliance raid roulette
First bad indication: the tanks all sat at Mateus waiting for someone else to get in tank stance. After sitting there for around two minutes like lost chickens the DRK who was still in the ilvl300/290 job gear pulls. Kudos to you lil guy, even if Mateus did squash you into lalafell jam several times. Also since the tanks were playing aggro pingpong my bard's mana/tp song was constantly on CD since the PLD from C tried to tank in Sword Oath after the DRK got pancake'd.
One very chatty RDM from Alliance A said to kill the aqua bubbles in an order of "b then a then c"... I have never seen this before? I play Aether data centre and all the other times each alliance just.. kills their own bubble no issues. I main bard and I don't mind helping other alliances with their adds once mine is killed since I'm ranged and it's less running for me, but it seems odd to the melee players run from one bubble to another.
Next up was Hashbrown, Bringer of Breakfast (he's ready with your order!). The PLD in C finally decided to MT for the raid, except the Lalajam DRK who was res'd at the end of the Mateus fight (instead of just releasing) left Grit on but not Darkside. Aggro wasn't an issue this time thankfully but again there just seemed to be overall low raid DPS and a lot of people dying to very obvious mechanics e.g. towers falling on lots of people's heads, or people just really wanting to lick the giant orange floor puddle.
Rofocale was where it just got totally ridiculous. The Dark Geas (spelling?) skill, where you have to click the circles away - the raid wiped because people just ran through them. I'd maybe understand if it weren't for the fact that the circles all have text over them, i.e. you can interact with them. I'm pretty sure that's the main indicator that you can interact or click on something (since it would be easy to miss the mouse icon changing if it hovers over the circle), and also the fact that the circles don't disappear if you just run through them.
The main annoyance for me was one of the WHMs from Alliance A. One was well geared, mostly 330-340 stuff. The other? Had some 330 bits, a 300 Arhat helmet, the WHM 350 Anemos wep which was all fine to me but... they were using the Makai 235 top. And I'd just noticed in the Chimera trashpack before that they'd set their char just to run at the gate for the adds to die. I did run up and /slap them at this point and they went and ran in a circle for a bit before going back to running at the gate.
I wouldn't necessarily mind someone using garbage gear if they made an effort to fully participate in the raid. I do think the Makai top is silly considering that your 70 Job quest hands you 290 gear on a silver platter and since they had the Aymur Anemos, they had clearly DONE the 70 job quest... so I just don't understand why they were using the Makai top. It annoys me that you get handed the 290 ilvl job gear and people still go into level 70 content e.g. expert roulettes, 70 raids etc using level 60 gear. I don't want to carry someone through a raid or whatever just because they can't be bothered (?) to use the job gear until they get better stuff or even willingly handicapping themselves for ??? level 60 gear. If you're messing around in a 4man/8man with your FC or friends then fine but don't do it in a random party...
I could read rants from you all day, that made me literally lol - he's ready with your order! of salty death
Anyways- also Rabanastre. Multiple times now things have... been fine? What?!
Seriously - I'm going in several times a week so I have a stockpile of coins for upgrades in 4.3 and I keep getting groups that know what they're doing, don't have (egregious) dps deficiencies and don't let me die to unavoudable damage.
In this last run I had literally nothing to complain about. The biggest mistake made was me - I didn't pop Diversion and took a Crippling Blow as a RDM leaving me with 28 hp but the tank yanked the boss off of me and healers topped me back up before I could say Vercure.
If this is the trend in 24man raids... yes please, let's keep this train rolling.
I really truly wish I had raid groups this nice. About the only time I get something that goes smoothly is if Void Ark comes up in raid roulette - not crystal tower since I'm still getting raids who wipe to Behemoth/Phlegethon/Amon/Cerberus.
I haven't done Rabanastre in a while, so I don't know if I truly noticed a decrease in player quality or if my memories of running it for the Lost allagan coin upgrades are just rose tinted. They probably are since at the time I was mostly running them with my boyfriend and other FC members whereas now I'm often just pugging them. I get that not having things like voice chat means PUG groups will never be as smooth though. Did have a tank actually yesterday in WCoM who wanted to do that fancy schmancy "turn Calofisteri so the raid doesn't get cl-" [entire raid gets cleaved] and this continued throughout the fight and the tank messed up every time. Hoo boy.
 I try not to let things like raid drama or wipes get to me too much.
There is one I have just remembered which I thought I had shared but I guess not.
https://i.gyazo.com/9704056cd7dab2a7...fab7ed6141.png
Context: World of Darkness. Raid wiped on the first group of trash. Literally right of the gate, wipe. Our tank had been overeager and after the wipe, proceeded to blame my FC mates who were on WHM/SCH for not healing her. The blue text is alliance and green is my party chat since I changed the default colours. White is me, Red is FC RDM, Green is the SCH. The PLD had no oath and yes, as you can see, was wearing level 29 ornaments and some NPC 40-50 gear. They had the Ironworks helm at least but again... the 45 and 50 job is like free candy, why wouldn't you just wear it?
I never use that Shield Oath macro, partly because I don't believe in using obnoxious macros outside of FC groups where we're all in voice chat and therefore not reading Party chat, but also I messed up the formatting and I'm too lazy to fix it.
They got kicked after we all revived and everyone had a good laugh about it since they were being obnoxious in alliance chat instead of just sticking to party chat, but idk, this one really just sticks out to me.
Melee dps that use AoE in your average duty finder party are somewhat rare. Though I think part of the problem is that many classes don't get their AoE attacks until around level 30 or later; some like Dragoon don't get it to 40 or later. By that time your average player could have easily have sunk thirty or forty hours into the game. When your first experience with the game is single target dps for dozens of hours on end it can create a mindset that might be hard to break. In fact, Bard and Black Mage are the only dps classes that I can think of off the top of my head that get an AoE attack below level 20.
I wanted to have a perfect challenge log week just once - had some time this week so why not now, right? Everything went fine - until I started queueing for Astragalos...
Why? Just why did I have to unlock that?^^
I tried, really - queued for several hours several times...it's...just...impossible...giving up now... XD^^
Astragalos queue ruined it...
Still feels good to have all non-pvp completed though, so I'm only half as sad as I used to be by now :D
Nevertheless I hope that Astragalos gets more popular again some time - I haven't even seen it once up to now...
P.S.: Edited that several times - sorry about that, it's my first post, i hope the link to the screenshot is working^^
RDM, BLM, MCH, BRD, and SAM all have AoE at level 18 which is early enough to use in all content. BLM even get it as early as 12 with their second one coming in at 18. And even though SMN doesn't get proper AoE until 30, it still does okay AoE early on even with just hardcasting DoTs on each mob. MNK gets it much earlier than people tend to think at 26, and DRG have to wait until 40. Meanwhile poor NIN has to wait until 42.
The one thing I always think of when the topic of AoE comes up is that poor ASTs don't even get their one AoE ability until 52 making it not able to be used in any 2.0 content at all. I really wish they would adjust that somehow, since I always feel super useless as an AST in 50 capped content.
