Adding my support to this! I would love to see a female Hrothgar added in!
Like I said take it to the DMs of a platform if you wanna keep at it.
Pretty much. You didn't miss anything in the stream, they are very careful with their words when talking about what they're trying to do with Viera and Hrothgar heads.
They kept talking about memory limits and that has got to have something to do with the fur&patterns features. They really rolled the dice on that fur stuff and prob don't have the memory budget left to make hat-hair models for each mane and head but see the mane as too important a design decision for their vision of Lion Men to take away just to plop on a hat. Like how Viera selections of ears are the reason they can't wear hats ... as it stands they could give them hat-hair models but when it comes to the ears they would either just have to clip horribly, be turned off or they would have to make a solution that works for all 4 ears which may cross the memory budget or may be too much work depending on the solution.
Perhaps with more power they may be able rig up a solution to it some day, but they have made it clear it's not a promise.
Tis why I'm glad to see that the females are depicted as being bald, without manes there would be no reason they couldn't wear hats and as someone who rocks short hair cause of hate for clipping I know that hats do so much more for making your character look different.
Also finally found the artist behind this drawing (I try to credit everything and this one bugged me as it was nothing but a sea of pinterest links when I searched it)

They also made this (they seem to not draw Tabaxi much so that pretty much all the cat folk they have)

Maybe, but there's no practical reason Viera can't use any of the hairstyles available in the game either, yet here we are.
Aside from the reasons they've given and how much sense they make there's a very practical side effect to the situation for them; it saves them time.
If they can get male Viera and female Hrothgar out the door, make people happy about that and sell some more Fantasias, all the while keep saving that time through the same limitations? It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest.
The bar of expectations regarding these races is literally on the floor at this point, most people would be thrilled to just have access to them.
Hopefully they're not that dense though and they'll be able to tackle the core issues for both if it's possible.
Pinterest is a blight on Google image search.
The first statement they made about hair for both races in 2019 said that they would give Viera some of the old so at the very least it doesn't seem like a tech issue that keeps em from doing it.
Also, repeating these limitations is easily more work. Like, how many new hair styles are Viera players expecting? I'm guessing ... at least more than 1. Hrothgar manes, either they make mane(s) that all the faces can have or new manes for each type of face or they just add in another beast head with it's own 2 unique manes cause it doesn't seem like any face would get more manes than any other.
This seems like objectively more work than any other race option gets and if you repeat this decision to ignore shared hair for male Viera and this mane stuff for female Hrothgar you've now doubled the expectations. If they simply say Female Hrothgar are bald/ don't have hair but can wear hats and if they just give male Viera shared hair (and maybe different ears so that they can wear hats?) then they don't have to worry about making new hair for them.
In all, these limits are the result of compromises for design decisions that require a lot more work than any other race. Deciding not to give Female Hrothgar hair at all would be less work than making hair for them.
Right, that was kind of the point I was making.
There doesn't seem to be a real reason we can't have them, but we still don't have them because...
There would be no reason for female Hrothgar to not be able to wear hats if they were actually bald, but it's by no means a sure thing they would actually be able to because SE is SE.
If they were to release the other genders I could maybe see them moving the now complete races into their own category of restrictions that actually somewhat make sense from a technical standpoint where the Viera get access to the modern aesthetics hairstyles but no hats, and the Hrothgar get the hats but no modern aesthetics hair.
I can't see that going down too well either but even if they made more hairstyles for Hrothgar they'd have to de-tangle their mess of a CC first so people can actually access them without throwing cash at it or they might as well not be there, but unless they actually saw how it was received and listened to feedback (fingers crossed) they still intend to release more faces with different hair for Hrothgar.
honestly think the lack of hair for viera is less about viera needing slight adjustments because of where the ears are, but more so being pretty much unable to do the same for hrothgar and keeping the two races the same out of some weird sense of fairness.
edit: would fem hroths be considered bald even if theyre furry like all over?
Oh, I get what you're saying.
Yeah, I have no clue why something like this isn't given to Viera (has to be easier than making a brand new hair just for them ... wind caller also looks non-problematic) but I do think they have a reason, we just don't know it cause people rarely ask them about the finer details. I remember the first time YP talked about hair was in that Japanese Mag interview and it was spread everywhere because for so long people had been wondering wtf they would do with the hair yet no one in the West bothered asking in interviews ... so YP never talked about it.
I feel I can map out the reason Hrothgar can't wear hats by looking at how hats are different from everything they can and can not wear which leads me to think "no mane = no reason females can't wear hats". I can guess blindly at the Viera hair thing (Like ... even when he said that they would get shared hair he didn't feel like all shared hair would be possible meaning they have a concept in mind for what "works" on them or looks right. How many that would be? IDK ...) but I can't really tell
.
Either way, it FEELS like they recognize that they may have made a whoopsie which is why they keep talking about trying to find a way around this head gear stuff (never promising though) to help alleviate some of the pain for players as they know the players aren't happy about head gear at least. So yeah, they can decide to just "do " w/e they want but with their current tune I don't think they would ignore hats again if they do make females bald.
Anyway, been loving finding art for bald cat ladies. (seems like a western thing, can't do my West/ East thing too well with this one)

I don't know if it's because I have Elder Scrolls brain or what, but I would like my fem hrothgar to be "bald". I love the sleekness of the panther silhouette. Looks less SL furry oc and more fantasy cat furry.
People feet definitely does look weird - too bad females would have people feet too, better than no footgear, I suppose. Now bald hrothgar, sure that should be an option. I don't think they should all be bald, ESO khajiit aren't bald - they just can be bald. ESO actually gave them (and continued) to give them longer or puffy hairstyles - to sell in their cash shop of course.
I'm far from a good artist but reading through the last ten or so pages gave me some inspiration - it's rough and I'm obviously a furry, but it does encourage me to get better.
Keep it up, fellas.

Cute art!!
We're slowly creeping up on the reveal of 6.0 information and I'd just like to quietly continue supporting this thread. I don't actually expect any new playable races for the new expansion though, between an unknown amount of the team being put to work on FF16 and the pandemic, unless the devs pulled some miracles in the background.
At the very least I hope they can make a barebones female hrothgar NPC for them to use in cutscenes and quests. That every other notable hrothgar NPC has a dead wife or mother is uh, a pretty nasty narrative hole they've put themselves in. Like, I understand there's no models to use, but can't they just be out adventuring for once? Running errands for an indeterminate amount of time??
The FFXIV team created the Roegardyn women and the Mi'qote men, so I think they absolutely can create the Hrothgard women and Viera men models ...! When SE announced the two new playable races, I was happy to create male Viera, but when they announced the female gender lock ... I was just unhappy ... to this day I continue to play the male Mi'qote.
Coz IRL I'm male and don't want to be FORCED to play a female character.
That's fair! I'd be upset too, but it would at least be a balm over the 'we're killing all the women of this race, who have very prominent leadership-like roles, to hide that we don't have them designed' narrative problem. A barebones NPC would not need to have all the necessary player animations made for them, nor would they need to have thousands of armors fitted, so my thought is that it would at least be a hopeful kind of building block towards a fully playable race. Similar to how Merlwyb existed in 1.0, but female roegadyn were not actually in the character creator until the new team put together and shuffled out 2.0.
Granted, I don't know what kind of priorities or standards the team has in place nowadays, so this might just be wishful thinking.
Their absence in the Bozja quest lines was sorely noticed. They really do need to get round to adding them.
There is still a chance that they may announce the races in the next announcement events. Keep faith! :3
This event seems to have served mostly the same purpose as the American events in the past where it shows next to nothing, and we have to wait until the Euro and JP events for the meat. Maybe a bit more than normal but I think they're only doing 2 events this time.
So yeah, the moment I heard about a "MAY Fan Fest!" I prepped myself to have to wait until May for anything of substance or any confirmation 1 way or the other and sure enough we got mostly verbal info about a number of things and saw very little.
Also came across this lil Hrothgar art recently. She, like many, were hoping for info Friday.

we also got another Bozja zone in next Bozja update so probably there or nothing Similar to Fran in last ivalice raid
Yeah, that to. For the raid I remember a patch trailer having a sneaky short shot of Fran's foot before they revealed Viera at the Euro Fan Fest. Given how they talked about the timetable of making Viera and Hrothgar and basically completed them at the last min it's possible that even if they are making them they're just not in a presentable state yet. Perhaps a Female Hrothgar NPC can be shown Fran Style in the 5.5 trailer or w/e they reveal the new zone.
The cynic in me says, they learned their lesson with Viera so they'll be very delicate with it or just not bother. We got to go into an ancient temple below ground paramount to the queen and Bozja ether crystals with the only artifact being an exotic wildcat statue in NM and Savage(Which unintentionally brings up greek philosophy were the depiction/worship of nature dictating natural laws to its citizens. Meaning controversy with females if flat faced as the males would be closer to "gods" literal image, or the opposite where they see males as a "flawed" image compared to females, being the reason we have a matriarch. However, if the later was the case then you would guess the Shamans would always pick fem Hrothgars as queen). No early mural of exaggerated depictions of gods/races, not even copy/paste of the first mural in the ruins. You would think the devs are confident enough to show it more or give more hints in one of the hardest battle content in terms of accessibility. The next area will probably be closer to the main IVth legion stronghold away from exotic ruins. Maybe they will show another hint but I think it would be more effective if we got hints delivered in threes (one per added content patch)
They're just less comment than the men and other races don't see them often. Partly because of drama over Hrothgar homeland.
They're actually in the story, we know of at least 3 Hrothgar males who had reg wife-n-child families and the devs show us art of a Hrothgar queen and her maidens ...

They just are always written to be dead because they're not in the game. So they exist and are a known, seen peoples who just never show up as of now.
Also, people were really hoping for that announcement. Hopefully May is the day...

Males would be just as rare or even scarcer by laws of productivity(if "litters" do not exist) with only a few females especially when the race is figuratively and literally character assassinated if you follow the Bozja story. Maybe that's why Male Miqote, Dusk Elezen and Femroe got respectable PC numbers...they all got breeding harems with a single male
However...since Hrothgars="Furries"="Kinks"...I don't think the forums are ready for what a few "alternative methods" we can imagine happening. Have a Thicgar~

But they are prob just gonna use roegadyn female model as a "base" and change it.
Tbh female Hroths being rare just feels weird, specially considering the irony that irl lions have the inverted gender ratio situation. I pretend there are as many females as males, it just so happens that the few who travelled to Eorzea/we interact with in Bozja were male.
Either that or Hrothgars are treated as lycanthropy - Hroth dad + Hyur mom = baby Hroth lol
nah male hrothgar are cursed enough lol
Magnus (ShB story in Twine) has a dead wife, Radovan (Gunbreaker NPC) has a dead wife. Bajsaljien (Bozja NPC) also has a dead wife and kids, a number of Bozja cards mention dead parents/mothers (Marsak, Xeven, Stanik) and one hrothgar's card even mentions a dead great grandmother (Velibor). The card for the queen mentions that the majority to inherit the Gunnhildr queen title were also hrothgar, as they were the larger population in Bozja.
But again, there is no model made for them, so we keep running into the "they're dead" narrative excuse.
