This morning, I decided to run an expert roulette on SMN, and to my surprise, ended up in Thordan Ex. I keep forgetting that these EX fights still pop up in the DF, but what shocked me even more was that the moment I loaded in, Thordan was already casting Dragon’s Gaze. Needless to say, we didn’t make it far – the group died to burning chains.

When we restarted, I posed a question: what happened to the DPS I replaced? Whomever it was had suddenly dropped. One of the players said they had accidentally queued for this one instead of normal Thordan. The thing was…the only people who knew how to actually fight this battle, based on the next two pulls, were myself and a fellow mentor who was on a tank. I don’t think anybody else expected Thordan Ex to be as hard as it was – by the time we hit Ancient Quaga on each pull, there were at least three dead party members, one of them usually being a healer.

They even failed the burning chains mechanic.

I decided I was going to stick around and help them out. I had a mentor backing me up, and even though he wasn’t really helping me explain mechanics (asked him a few times on certain things for clarification, but he didn’t respond).

I told the group to focus more on mechanics and what I advised them on, and we’ll revisit things once we get past the burning chains + towers mechanic. Just as I gave the go-ahead, the other mentor told the group that they were going to clear this and they needed to try this in the PF…and then he left. He wasn’t exactly wrong…

…but I felt embarrassed. Dude, you’re a mentor. Don’t just leave them with that and abandon them like that. So I told the group I could try to requeue in as a tank – at the very least, I could handle some of the bigger mechanics. Told them to hold on, backed out, requeued….and could not get back in. :(

For those of you who were with me in that run, I’m sorry I couldn’t requeue and help you guys out. I was 100% willing to stay with you and help you with the fight. Also, that other mentor is not how we are…that was just a bad showing on his part.

This kept happening to me recently as well.
Did they change something about joining in-progress?

Someone in 24-man left as a DPs because he wanted to re-queue as a healer but couldn't.
Same thing happened to me, I left as healer to re-queue as a tank but ended up waiting..

Is it possible that if you leave you won't be joining the same alliance/party?

It's possible that either they vote abandoned, or another tank managed to get in

This mechanic is easy, just slightly confusing. So the god is giving out divine commands that must be obeyed. However, when he's the false god hes trying to trick you by telling you the opposite of what you should do. So for the blue eyed "truth" god, turn means be looking away when the timer runs out, and scatter means be moving when the timer runs out. For the red eyed "false" god you do the opposite - face him for turn(really just keep attacking normally since that already means youre facing him) and stand completely still for scatter(sheath your weapon and everything). Not too hard.

That’s not true at all. I’ve queued back into groups I’ve left with the intent on filling a tank or healer role. If you are removed from a group you can’t queue back into that group.

The sheathe your weapon part is important on this. You need to be doing nothing. Not moving, not attacking, nothing. I just hit ESC a couple times and that untargets and stops everything nicely.

My favorite one is the false god "look away". That's when you get to go full DPS.

done mostly lowbie DR stuff today as I'm leveling my RDM; my stories are about awesome WAR.
first, had the smoothest Dzemael Darkhold run in recent memory, big pulls, awesome WHM too, but I embarrassed myself when I fell off a cliff after I cast displacement xD took note not to do it in that area next time :D

then a bit of an awkward Hullbreaker Isle run, I was disappointed on our SCH. at the beginning he told our tank to pull more. but at 2nd boss he and SAM didn't get in bubble in time, then eventually I followed, so tank carried us :D next trash mobs, tank pulled bigger but I've noticed he only gets lustrate and we hardly get any heal apart from Eos. then it got worse when at last trash pull the tank died taking the rest of the party :P SCH said "can you tell I just woke up?" so I retorted "eh, you did say to pull big" his reply? "because I can" I just rolled my eyes and said no more

Oh yeah, a lot of people forget to simply untarget him for that. As long as you untarget, you don't even need to worry about sheathing your weapon as you can't auto-attack unless you've targeted an enemy. Fortunately, that mechanic doesn't throw people off as much as it used to. The worst part of that fight is getting people to place the swords correctly when they're marked.

Ah...thanks for the help on the false god. I know everything else...but when the false (red-eyed) god tells me to 'flee and don't stop', I just keep DPS'ing him. Didn't realize I had to stop all actions. That's the only thing I kept getting hit by. Thanks.

For me:
Blue Mask (true)
Play Symbol (or scatter): Tank, melee or bard, do attacks til countdown peeps, then move between two, one and zero. If caster you can do everything with a castbar, if using skills like instant casts (triple, dualcast) see melee.
Eye: Turn away at countdown peeps between two, one and zero. Autoattacks won't trigger the penalty.

I only get a penatly, if I don't pay attention wich mask was shown before.

So I resubbed to FFXIV this last week was having a GREAT start to the week, got back into raiding, doing dailies, leveling stuff all that, weekly reset today and I que into expert roulette I get...Ala Mhigo as per usual whatever let's go. I get in with a new group (3rd new group in the last couple of days game loves to troll me), we say hello and get to pulling except the tank isn't pulling anything just standing around spamming Total Eclipse missing everything and not holding hate ugh..Great!

I kindly say "Watch your threat! Flash! Halone/Balone!", keeps hitting Total Eclipse not saying a word, the SAM and BLM are fighting each other for threat while i'm healing them and DPSing they both say this is their friend and he's new, YOU DON"T SAY. I tell em can you at least teach him the basics of tanking such as using Flash and Circle of Scorn, oh man when I said that it opened a huge can of worms the BLM instantly says "if you don't like it then get out of the group please". Excuse me? No no no, this isn't how it works we're a TEAM in this dungeon and we're going to get through this i'm not eating a penalty you can kick me because this tank needs to learn how to tank, the tank does a /sit and starts typing that he's never had a complaint before.

Really...I find that impossible you've been using TOTAL ECLIPSE did the mobs just take 4 mins to die as they got tickled? Like really how is this possible, anyways the tank in turn on the first boss just stays in Shield Oath spamming 1-2-3 over and over and over eating every single AoE marker and everything. The BLM responds with "See he can tank :D! Now will you shut up?" I said good for him i'm glad he figured that out 10 minutes into a dungeon while getting hit by every AoE and not making any effort to move or do anything.

The arguing continues but I opened every chest so I wouldn't get vote kicked (teehee) and just kept doing my job of tanking DPSing and healing as a WHM, truly ahead of our times here I even face tanked the adds with the bugs and the giant cannon by kiting and the tank was screaming at me and /sitting not keeping hate or doing anything.

I don't get how this person has a 70 warrior, paladin, smn/sch, and a 67 monk but yet doesn't know or wants to tank if you didn't wanna tank then play something else because I tanked most of the dungeon as a healer while DPSing and trying to make the run go by faster, I was being bashed left and right by everyone because they wouldn't step up to do their jobs. I left with 0 comms and a "wish we could kick you" remark. Good times!

I had some special individuals who represented the "bad side of the community" unfortuantely quite too well:

Friend of mine hopped into O1 Savage as SCH, i joined out of boredom the same group as DRK (havent touched the jobs as much ever since SB hit but well, wanted to see if i can still play the job)
Just so u know, my Bud was fairly new to healing but he actually managed quite well in previous attempts (were people would not die left and right :P)

Anyways, the Grp got lead by a SAM and his buddy, a WHM, was also part of this Group. Pull was as normal, aside from the NIn in the party beeing a bit derping here and there and teh Tank sticking to glue to that "A" marker

Then the actual s**t show started. Aside from people dying left or right, my friend was healing his arse off, the WHM not supporting him in any way possible, not even after Alte Roite's Charybdis and AoE casts etc., so ofc we lose people here and there, i dropped at some point to during to the lack of healing, even had to use Living dead on a Tankbuster because i was so low life that a CD or two alone wouldn't have been enough to keep me alive. Needles to say, Walking dead killed me ofc >.>. Friend was busy healing as good as he could but the WHM didn't bother at all helping out with the low life people and the people who dropped dead on the floor after. The SAM apparently didn't know where his position was for some pushback actions etc., nearly killing or killing people with overlapping the lightning strikes.

We made it through thankfully but as soon as we left the Instance, my Friend left the Party (understandable at this point imo), well.. so i thought.. he complained about the SAM and the WHM for beeing incompetent to do Mechanics right aswell as the WHM literally ignoring the fact that he probably forgot that he has to throw some heals here and there (I am not a main healer but most of the mechanis u can heal through with Off GCD's just fine,especially in o1 Savage imo).

I asked if he left the Group and guess what? he did not leave it, the SAM just simply kicked him out, probably because his WHM buddy complaining for whatever reaseon (WHM screwed up for ignoring the fact that he is a WHM though)

So i asked this to the Party:
"Did the SCH left or did he got kicked out :o?"

SAM and WHM:
"He left"

(Yeah he sure did dude he just told me a minute Ago that u guys kicked him out because you guys are "special snowflakes")

Me:
" Sry but i know the SCH u just kickd out of the party, Be at least honest m8"

I think i dont have to say that they removed me from the party aswell, just confirming the fact that they got busted lying.

They reopend the party, but they were all alone so either they disbanded or the other people just left (i hope it was the second though but i am just guessing)

Welp, butthurt people that is all i can say... this a running theme apparently nowadays, people beeing in denial, and simply showing disgusting personalities, especially if u bust them when they lie to you.

My respond tbh was to warn people on my Friend list and the LS about those two people, to save them from this madness, probbaly not the best solution but some people have to hit the ground very hard to realize what they do sometimes. They might realize it if people start to avoid them :/ (Note: this was not the only incident, after "warning LS people and friends, some mentioned their names and confirmed their ugly behaviour of putting the blame on others)

today has been a day with special groups/individuals... queue in trials on my war and it's nidhogg (my personal fav). there's a bonus and immediately you see about half the party are either sprouts or returning players. my co-tank falls into the latter and he's in shield oath so i go deliverance and wait... then he goes to sword oath. okay cool, he wants me to tank! i pull, everything is going okay except... the pld is stacking with me and eating cleaves out the wazoo AND is back in shield oath. weird... progressing into the fight before the adds, people are dying but we all manage to get up in time for the adds. i get one, the pld doesn't get the other so i grab both, whatever, we move on and phase 2 is where i internally cry.

people are stacking on me (pld included) eating cleaves and dying and other people are dying to unknown things. it's a miracle we get to p3 and i should have known this was coming but nobody stacked for akh morn or just ran away with the marker. needless to say we wiped and i pull up my leadership pants on and start taking charge of this fight. it doesnt go any better tbh bc people are still stacking on me, the pld isnt listening when i ask him to stay in sword oath, people cant dodge anything, its horrible... i'm assuming my advice eventually stuck bc after we wipe a second time, we clear and i walk away with 0 comms whoo.

i decide to join a pf for leveling in doma on ninja, including another dps and an ast. we zone in, i check the tank's gear and they have a lvl60 weap and all 60 right side. needless to say we didn't even get to the colossus bc they melted, leading us to wipe and this happened once more before i suggest they pull smaller due to their gear. they fake dc (lol) and our party of three moves along, waiting for them to come back. personally, i wish we didn't kick them bc i wanted them to eat the penalty rather than flaking but whatever. :v

So I signed on for Trial Roulette last night as an RDM, and I spawn in to this in Garuda HM.

Yeah...I don't get how the PLD could miss TE every time...that must've been a bad tank. That being said, I haven't been running into any issues with TE spam, even in Sword Oath. As long as you establish hate with a flash, bust out 2 or 3 (or 4, if you're feeling risky) TEs, fire off another flash, then go back to TE, you really shouldn't be losing aggro to anyone. At least, from my experience, I haven't. For big pulls, I don't really even go into my single target combos until we get down to one or two enemies in a mob.

I wanted to share what happened in a party earlier this morning in Brayflox's Longstop Hard.

From the start, I told the group that I was new to RDM and that I had only done the dungeon on normal once back in July. Everything goes smoothly until the final boss. After we wipe the first time, the tank politely explained to me and the other DPS who was unclear with the dungeon, what we were doing wrong and how we could improve.

We wipe about 8 times on the final boss. I thanked the tank and healer for not quitting and they both told me "It's more fun teaching someone who listens and actually downing the boss". Not once did they lose their cool with me and the other DPS and laughed when they screwed up after doing what they explained we were doing wrong.

Really gave me hope that there are still chilled people playing MMO's

I had a weird event just now that left me confused. Sohm Al Normal, I zone in and tank says he's new, has a sprout. Fair enough, I explain the bosses as we go, he does well enough with no major issues. At one point between the second and third boss I'm examining people and notice an oddity. This tank has on Shire gear. That is, level 60 gear. Stuff you can't get without getting to a location that requires you clear said dungeon.

I attempted to ask him about this at the end, but did not catch him before he left. The other person left, a healer, commented that she noticed the exact same thing and was also confused.

Anyone have any possible explanation for this?

Only things that come to my mind is maybe they were new, as in new to tanking the place and wasn't clear on what they meant. The other is and I'm guilty of this too is I'll say I'm newish. Meaning I've done it but I'm still skittery with the place until I've done it maybe 3-5 times or such when I feel I'm confident enough to say I know the place by heart.

Also, easy way to tell, is that the Shire gear from a jump potion will have the character’s name on it, like crafted gear does. Figured that out a few days ago.

I actually have a nice feel-good story to add. And I got fully act like a mentor, yay!

So, randomly jumped into a Susano Ex clear party on PLD for reasons. My co-PLD was new to the fight, but said they saw some vids. I offered to MT it and they said go for it. Asked them to go into Sword Oath, explained that Stormsplitter was the usual mechanic for a tank swap, and advised them to not provoke until the second Stormsplitter. Pointed out that there were orbs they would have to eat during sword phase and set up waymarks for them, and in we go.

Given that it was the first time they fought Susano Ex, I kept an eye on everything they did, just in case they messed up. We wiped when the tank forgot to grab the second orb, and it was left to a SAM to try to hold it. At some point, noticed that even though I was in Shield Oath, I was quickly losing aggro to my co-tank, who was in Sword Oath. Come to find out they were spamming their enmity combos. Understanding that this was probably their first time tanking a tough fight in SB, I calmly asked them to use their DPS combos while in Sword Oath and we continued. We got down our tank swaps, told them about Susano's audio cue to move him during the stun lightning phase, and thankfully, the party was patient and very supportive of them.

I did everything I could to help out my fellow PLD with small tips here and there, and on our fourth pull, a new PLD had finally achieved the clear. I can’t remember your name, but if you were in that party earlier yesterday and you are on the forums, co-PLD, you were doing great, and I would love to pair up with you more for anything :D

So I'm trying out my baby war today and ran into amazing people. Told them I was new to everything as I am and the astro in my last party was happily pushing me to pull more in long stop as I was doing tiny pulls. I'm scared of messing up. who knew I could hold hate and actually tank. I ran it a few more times and got to a point where I'm pulling more than I think I can handle. Made a bunch of friends my last few runs of that dungeon. One dps said he doesn't believe I'm new all cause I used overpower and provoke. This is odd as when I started today I had a run in manor where I was dying left and right and felt so bad I almost quit tanking. That party didn't lose their cool and gave tips I'm following now. I went from dying and failing to mass pulling in less than 4 hours. I still got ALOT to learn but wow.... amazing what helpful people can do for a newbie player. Thank you all who had me as their baby warrior tank today. I only hope I keep improving.

I'm well aware it's better to just be honest from the start and as long as I am being spoken too (IE not shouted at in Caps) , I don't have a problem listening to more experienced players who have been playing this game much longer and at a higher level than I have.

Much respect for you doing that and willing to party up with the dude or dudet again. It's people like you who really help new players feel more in control when they are doing content for the first time. I can't applaud you enough!

Another awful experience from yesterday.

Tagging for leveling roulette as Whm, end up in sastasha, things seems okay until I notice that the monk, doesn't seem to do any damage. A quick check at his gear and it reveals that he has nothing but lv1 gear (squall outift).

This guy had litterally no hp, and did no damages at all, well as much as a lv1 is expected to do.

When asked why he only had lv1 gear, things went ugly. Turns out he "doesn't need gear", "don't care if carried" and that he has nothing to learn because "he has o4s on farm" (which proved to be a big lie, a quick research made it obvious this guy didn't even get past o3s, and performed poorly in o1 and o2). I told him to level in potd if he can't bother gearing up decently not to be a dead weight in dungeons.

Bad luck for me, turns out he had a friend who tagged with him (just as toxic as him) and they boot me out, not without taunting and insulting me.

This game needs something to prevent this, this is not acceptable that one can join a dungeon almost nacked. I had never seen that before and I really fail to understand what's in those people's head. We need Ilv restrictions for leveling roulette. Imagine if all 4 people do that ? everyone ilv1 in say, Haukke manor ? What will they do ? just wipe in chain and leave until they find a group to carry them ?

A simple fix : base ilv roulette on a min ilv based on your char level : example : char level 30, min ilv for leveling roulette : ilv 25, even 22 would be totally accepptable. But level 1 ? damn, he just had to clear the hall of novice to get decent gear in no time and for free ! The kind of laziness is just incredible.

Playing Brayflox's Longstop as astrologian. The tank is new, a bit undergeared, and not great at holding enmity, but that's not the main point of this story.

The first section goes wrong in every possible way, some of them my fault. The tank takes a wrong turn and doesn't collect the key. We go back for the key, fight the enemies and I run up the hill not realising someone else already got it mid-battle, and have to dash back to the boss room before the barrier goes up. I get in at the last second (and as the tank faints) only to be thrown back out of the room as the barrier appears behind me, and also drop to zero HP. Failure is inevitable, and as I'm typing an apology the barrier goes down and the revived-and-returned tank goes dashing back into the boss alone.

I warp back to the start, and we return to the boss. The tank is lying there waiting to be revived, so we start the battle with them in a weakened state. I struggle with healing, forget to reapply Diurnal Sect and make a complete mess of my cards - several bad draws, then casting a much-needed Ewer onto the tank by mistake! - wipe number two.

My luck is much better on the third run (when not being chased by a flock of ziz), and we beat it this time. We continue on to the next mob of dragons, and I notice one of the DPS names is greyed out in the party list. "We've lost Oddname*", I think to myself as I notice a blue spot on the map back in the boss room.... and also notice that Oddname is right in front of me fighting the dragons. And suddenly it clicks.

We have two ninja Lalafells called Oddname Something.

And only one is moving at a time.

I think I can see what's happening here.

They're not straight bots because the player has been responding in the chat window when I apologised for my earlier fail. While I can't easily watch what actions the individual melee players are doing, I can see from the party list that only one of the ninjas is using abilities like Bloodbath while the other just tags along (or doesn't). Enemies are taking a painfully long time to die.

The second ninja begins the Aiatar fight with Shadow Shift (a damage-nullifying shield) up, but dies shortly after, and somewhere between the principle of it and needing all my time and MP to keep the tank alive, I have to just leave them on the floor. The three of us scrape through somehow.

On a side note, the Longstop seems hard work as an Astrologian? It was one of the first dungeons I did when I'd unlocked the class, and I felt like I was struggling with MP management even without party issues. Maybe because the cards have unlocked but your abilities with them are limited.

Once I got the Dusk Vigil while leveling my SCH. Got paired up with a SMN, a MCH and a PLD.
All 3 were very kind people and sometimes we would stop talking about some stuff regarding the game.
Except at one moment, the PLD got hit by a huge lag spike when we were outdoors, just before the final boss. He wasn't moving at all.

I thought it would be funny to write this pun : "Looks like he's OUT COLD !"

The PLD got back just in time to see my pun and everyone shared a big laugh.

At the end I got all 3 comms.

This game needs something to prevent this, this is not acceptable that one can join a dungeon almost nacked. Was just about to come here to post something similar. Did the Aetherochemical Research Center (SP?) last night, and I kinda pushed through it pretty fast on DRK. At the end of the dungeon the SCH and the DRG (in there together) said "finally a DRK that knows how to play the damn class"

Very proud, as I am also super self-concious sometimes about my gameplay

Had two good runs today with great people...2 of which had amazing names

Ah, jump potions, that must be it. Well at least they know what they're doing and aren't playing like your usual horror story jump potion players

Queued for Bardam's as RDM and once in there's the "new person bonus" flashing across the screen so figure the run is going to be bit slower than normal. When the DRK goes and pulls only one mob pack at a time I figured it was them. Their threat management isn't great throughout the first set of packs and I'm using Lucid and Diversion to help out. Past the first and get to the big bird mob, the healer goes and grabs the other pack of mobs on their own. I figure since there's no real 2nd boss I'll just go ahead and LB this trash pack.

WHM down!

The SMN does a nice Swiftcast raise thankfully since I didn't have Dualcast proc'd at the moment, was mid Vercuring the DRK as he did that so just kept spamming my heal on the tank till the WHM came back. I thought it was great that the WHM died to their own pull when it's been pretty clear the tank isn't anything to write home about.

On the final boss, the WHM and DRK both got confused and I attempted to heal them but the WHM died so, Verraise them back up and continue fighting. Boss comes down with the wings and tell the SMN to LB cause I got confused and died :P only the SMN dies and while the animation of the LB went off and we lost the bars, no damage from it. Still left the dungeon with 3 commends

Kindof a follow up from my last post. I was worried I got cocky and would suck right after posting my last post. But fate has a heart I guess. A friend wanted to que for leveling and wanted tank benefits so they grabbed me and we tank and dps que. We get manor. Only this time no deaths, fast pulling, barely stopping like I never had issues there just under 10 hours ago. You don't get to actually feel the improvement on alot of things.. I felt mine today. As a sidenote. I'm loving warrior on my miqo. I've been jamming No more heroes " kill or be killed" song on repeat since last night and it fits. So good. I'm still worried about any and all dungeons AFTER longstop tho. Stone vigil being one I really worried about tanking. But never give up right? Cause there's no more heroes.

I've just gotten my WAR to 70 and my all-star move for dungeoning has got to be Steel Cyclone. You get it at 45 so Stone Vigil is the last dungeon you'll do (short of Dzemael Darkhold if you do that at 44) where you don't have it. During a big pull it's amazing not only for the self heal but the point blank threat generation. Warriors can have a harder time with that compared to PLD and DRK but Steel Cyclone is like Flash on steroids.

Don't get discouraged! Tanking gets more fun as you level up :)

Stone Vigil used to be a very harsh dungeon on Tanks.Mobs hit very hard and with the wrong dps composition it was a struggle pulling big groups and not wiping fast.That being said though chances are you'll end up dfing with an isynced healer and 2 isynced dps so they should be at the highest gear allowance for that run.This means there will be better dps overall and mobs wont last as long.
You should do fine but if you see the healer struggling to keep you alive go slow and pull max 4 mobs.
Watch out for one or 2 tricky rooms and patrols in this dungeon also that can get aggroed by accident and wipe the party.
