Everyone was new at some point and dying to Shinryu is extremely common. You should have been here when SB first launched. The menagerie was more like a graveyard with all the dead bodies (including many veteran players), not to mention how not BLM friendly that fight is. Don't sell yourself short, but if you do think you have room for improvement ask your friends for advice or look up some tips and tricks to be a bit more mobile while still doing good damage. This thread aside, my experience with the community is mostly positive and helpful. Heck, sometimes just a shout in Rhalgr's Reach may yield some unexpected help. After all that you'll wonder why Shinryu gave you so much trouble before.

Thanks. I've been doing a lot of thinking over the past 24 hours. I spend a majority of my time online either playing the game or reading/watching about playing the game. I try to read/watch as much as I can about the classes I play the most (BLM and AST); which rotations to use; what is the best way to go through this particular trial/dungeon/solo duty, etc. I think the room for improvement I have is just knowing the content and learning to time things. I've found that in these later areas (Castrum Abania, Ala Mhigo, and Shinryu), it's coming down to timing; when do I lay down leylines safely, when should I make sure I can cast enough Fire 4 before I have to sacrifice enochian by moving, can I safely stay here, use triple cast and fire out enough F4s plus a convert and another F4 and a Bliz 3 before I have to move, etc. I'm not very good with timing, which I think is my issue. I just get into the rotation that I found on Reddit for 4.0 and that I've worked at trying to memorize, but then I have to move, I lose Enochian because when I did move I was close to needing to recharge it, and now that it's gone I have to wait for it to come off cool down and so I'm spitting out Fire 3 like a newbie.


Which segways into the other thing: I am a newbie. Not just in terms of how long I've been playing this game (just since July), but in terms of how long I've been playing MMOs entirely. I may be 32 and I may have been a gamer since I first saw Mario on the NES way back in the 80s, but this is the first MMO I have played for longer than a couple of hours. Up until mid-July, I had no idea what "dps", "aoe", "cool down", "pull", "aggro", etc meant. The more I thought about that last night, and after talking with some friends (including Kacho! ♥), I really have been hard on myself. I'm the type of person who, when she gives it her all (as I feel like I have been) and still comes up short (or feels like she's coming up short) turns into her own worst critic. So, I'm going to try to improve on the areas I think I can, timing and my rotation, and remind myself that a) this is my first MMO and I'm still on the learning curve, and b) I picked one of the hardest classes to master in this game because it is, for all intents and purposes, a glass cannon.

And yes, this community has been IMMEASURABLY helpful. One of the nicest communities I've ever been part of online, hands down.

I have a story I've been hesitating to share, because I'm sure I'm being my usual petty stuff, but why not? I have nothing to lose. I started up a duty finder over the weekend solely for teaching players O2S. I like to be nice from time to time, and my server really needs to have more players in endgame - these days, it's mostly Balmung, Coeurl, Gilgamesh, and Mateus that I see. Plus, I was initially teaching some others that I knew.

It was a learning party, but naturally, we wiped over and wiped again. That's to be expected.

This is where my problem was. My PF explictly said 'Kaiva's Learning Party', and it was my discord hosting the voice chat. So why in the blue hell would people with around as much clearing experience as me come in, and then talk over me? We are not a raid, we are not a static - we are just a few members of an FC and a couple of folks I have gotten really acquainted with whom I teach in a way that they understand. Instead, I get talked over, again and again and again. Was some of it helpful advice? It was. But the rest? Speaking in raider language that I understand is one thing, but these are new players entering FFXIV endgame for the first time, so it ended up sucking all the enthusiasm out of my learning party. Pretty sure some folks threw the final pull.

I walked away from that pretty heated. I don't mind the occasional advice, but ...this is MY learning party. Not to sound selfish...but I know how to explain things to players who are just now getting into endgame. I walked away with a bad taste in my mouth. Hm...I suppose that would be petty. I don't like being talked over in my own learning party that I am hosting.

I've had to do some amazing kiting. Aurum Vale, Coin Counter boss, 50% HP remaining. Don't know exactly HOW I survived soloing that, but it gave me 3 comms(this was back before Heavensward, and my BRD wasn't even 50 yet).

Then another one, not quite kiting...but lots of soloing of Chimera in Cutter's Cry. Almost every time I went in there as WAR(had it for most of my WARs leveling from when I could enter it until 60). Usually only 30-40%, but still more than I liked having to do since it still took some time to down him.

Ooookay, so this just happened..

I queued as WHM in 50/60 roulett to get some fast and nice exp. Since the friend I usually do my runs with was not online at the time I thought, okay, just go alone..
I get Stone Vigil HM...easy stuff, right? I have healed this more than enough times by now, this being old content and all. So what could go wrong?

...a lot apparantly.

I get paired up with two SAMs and a DRK. i barely said hello and the Tank runs off. Mhkay...I follow. And it begins.

The tank pulls up to the first wall, the room with the big dragon. A pretty normal pull for me which I have healed more that enough times without any problems...but no no no no no...NOT this time! Because the tank does not know what cooldowns are D:
He was already half dead when he finished the pull...well 'pull'...he just ran through the mobs, only getting aggro of some, which made healing as good as impossible. In desperation I had to use Benediction when we arrived in the last room to safe his life though...which got me the aggro of some of the mobs roaming around, and I kissed the floor.
Okay...maybe that was my mistake. Maybe I could have waited a second (even though there was no time...). But I say sorry...and the tank starts spamming the crying emote. I sigh to myself and we try again.
Again...without cooldowns. Again without aggro. Though this time it's the SAMs who get attacked first.
This leaving me no other choice but to heal again and I get attacked too...we wipe for a second time.

Now I just have to ask the tank to pleeease use cooldowns. He replies with "It was impossible."

WHAT?! HOW?! Q____Q

Well...long stroy short, this run was an absolute mess which not only made me question my own sanity but also the sanity of my team members.
We had no wipes after this, but two more deaths because they wouldn't do mechanics, get debuffs and then die, while I dodged, attacked and healed while doing mechanics.
Ah, and during the first boss, I suddenly was told to use Regen from one of the SAMS as a comeback to me asking the tank to use cooldowns. But the thing is...I was using regen...

One of the deaths happened at the last boss, or bosses. One of the two SAM died due to being too cool to evade attacks. He then refused to accept my rez until the boss was frickin' dead, while the tank and SAM number two BOTH decided to play dead on the floor, leaving me to finish off the boss on my own.

Yes...happy, happy times...

More of a "tales from multiple DFs lately" but...

I fully understand that there are players out there who want to sit at max health all the time, I get it. These are very often the people playing "forum princess healers" and to that end I am generally unaffected by them (or have been) since I've done most of my playing as a healer.

There is one subset of these people that irk me to no end though and that's the famous self (or even party) healing PLD and RDM. I am aware that your health is not full. I know. I also know that there is little to no incoming damage and the boss is almost dead. I know that Largresse is up in six seconds and I plan to throw up a Medica II and let the ticks do the work.

I don't know if this has always been as prevalent as I've found it to be lately but when we are running literally any 4 man dungeon as a PUG I don't trust you any more than you trust me. That means I am not relying on someone's self heals to keep them off the floor because frankly most of the people I've seen in DF don't seem to have the sense of self preservation to use these skills in a pinch plus I am still the healer and (to an extent) your health is my job to maintain.

Ffs let me do that job.

I think at this point if I see a PLD or RDM healing themselves while they're above 70% I'm just going to stop healing them. Clearly they want something to do and I'd rather at least one of us prioritize actually killing the enemies.

To make my point exceedingly clear I am not talking about a RDM using Vercure to proc Dualcast or even to spotheal themselves when they mess up a mechanic. I'm also not talking about a PLD healing themselves to throw up their shield (Divine Veil? I think) or even during a megapull to allow me to DPS for longer. This is aimed at the players who use these moves in excess and ultimately to the detriment of their personal DPS.

I tend to ignore my health unless I see it below 25%, then I start to self heal. Or if the enemy/boss just died, and I have dualcast ready, and nothing close enough to cast on, then I throw that heal at whoever(sometimes even just myself though I'm at 100%). I do tend to trust healers more often than not...I don't get into parties that end up being the horror stories that people keep talking about here very often.

Been leveling up Mch, and got a wander's palace, tank asked the healer if they were okay with large pulls healer agreed. So the tank pulls to the first door, tank is rotating his CD's however we notice that the healer is not healing. Tanks dies after miss timing the heal. Healer then apologizes telling the tank that they are practicing clutch heals, poor tin can was kicked around many times that run. Never wiped so the idea of kicking the the healer never crossed our minds. Overall was a quick run though.

I do not heal, so I do not know if clutch heals is something one practices but geez I would think that is something you do with someone you know, not a random tank in the DF.

I specifically stated that my issue with this practice did not lie with a PLD using clemency to heal themself during a large pull as I have superior AoE on any of the 3 healers. If we are talking about single target though there is no way for a healer to outdps a tank if both are playing at a similar skill level with a similar focus on DPS, short of the burst a WHM can put out with a PoM+Cleric combo which doesn't last forever.

Basically it might be intended as a nice gesture by that tank but I think we're all trying to get through the majority of our roulettes as quickly as possible it is definitively inefficent for a PLD (much less a RDM) to stop damage on a boss to top themselves off.

It certainly isn't a 'clutch heal' if you're simply leaving someone not topped off when there is no incoming damage. Hell, in my example I stated this happening at 70% - if you consider that a clutch heal then I'm not trying to be rude but you are the kind of player I'm complaining about.

I can relate since one time I had a paladin use clemency to such a degree that it was turning my oGCD heals on AST into 100% overheals. He said it was to give me more time to dps which sure there's nothing wrong with that but he apparently got really triggered when I brought it up. Next to last pack of enemies in Skalla and he uses clemency at 80% hp or so (single pull since the second dps wasn't with us for the first pull but he single pulled for the entire remainder of the dungeon even when they caught up), earthly star is about ready to blow up on its own and it turned into a 100% overheal.

Clemency is helpful when used right. Detrimental if overused.

Clutch heals in my eyes are any heals that do not result in the tank dying lol I have a very cavalier mindset when it comes to clutch heals. Though I do wonder where some got the idea good healing is letting the tank get as low as humanly possible before they start to cast a heal. I get trying to get spending as few gcds on heals, but seems some peeps take it to the extreme.

The clutxh heal post made me laugh. If that healer wants to go practice clutch heals, the best place to do it is in raids, particularly with people who just started learning the mechs or are derping then. It's the most brutal training any healer will ever get. Nothing gets quite clutch when you only have a few seconds to make a healing related decision count. If you ever decided to raise SMN first because you know your dead cohealer had just used its mp mgmt cds before he died and the SMN has access to aetherflow and mana shift, congratulations: you just became a clutch healing master.

Its an extreme example, I know but the difference here is that the healer in DF is the one creating the circumstances for training in clutch healing. The real training is done when you're constantly subjected to clusterbomb situations.

I guess i learned an important lesson in Solo Duty Finder.

Boy oh boy! It has been a while since I met one of the fabled 0 DPS healers.

I have been doing Expert roulettes as a DRK for quite a while now and when you are tanking it is easy to note if the DPS is low or healing output is subpar.

Roulette threw us into Ala Mhigo and I soon notice stuff is taking a while to die, and even though our healer is a WHM I can't see a single Aero DoT marker on mobs and not even getting slightly annoyed by how the stun from Holy doesn't sinergize well with the DRK kit.

I was not really in the mood to start arguing now since my plan was to just be done with the roulette and call it a day, so I was just going to let it slide.

Until the WHM decided to call out the RDM for taking to much damage from AoEs. By now, after countless Healer DPS debates we know how much downtime a non-DPSing healer has, specially since I was doing a good job with rotating cooldowns, using TBN and DA + AD. This is how the conversation went:

Afterwards we got a great WHM that was instantly pulverizing stuff with Aero III and Holy, finished the dungeon with no problems. When I got out I decided to look at the contacts list and found out the healer that got kicked is from my server lol, and apparently the other DPS, that remained silent for the whole thing, is also from Siren. In fact, they are from the same FC, probably queued together for that. I still find it a bit funny that he decided against dropping out of the dungeon with no penalty while we were still looking for a replacement healer (but hey, maybe he/she agrees with me, idk).

A clutch heal is a heal at the last minute or a heal that turns around a bad situation. When something is "clutch" in slang terms it means doing that something under extreme pressure or as that deciding moment between winning and losing.

I tanked Sastasha on my leveling war and got an awful healer. I'm starting to think I have a curse or something- perfectly good parties all day but every time I tank the universe is like NOPE.

So I'm leveling a character for each class so I have to suffer leveling 15 times plus an extra white mage so 16 times. Im very familiar with these dungeons and almost every situation a party can be. (yes I know you cringed reading that)

Anyway- I get an astologian who pulls every mob early, in the beginning spammed only helios, then refused to heal me unless my health got to critically low numbers. I main astro so this hurts my very soul to see someone playing so bad or trolling. Then he said in the chat-
"I think Im scarring the tank" Dude you'd give any tank a heart attack- dont spam heals so all the enemies jump you then barely heal me when I'm almost dead.

The he states he rarely heals when he plays astro...okay...

The only good thing is one of the dps was on my side about his bad healing, and we killed the last boss very quick- got three comms in the end.

I must admit that since I started leveling AST (level 67 now), I'm guilty of letting tanks fall to super low health % in the early dungeons. But that is just because Essential Dignity is super OP on the early game and will get a tank from ~20% health to full, with a super short cooldown too.

Some runs of Sastasha/Tam-Tara/Copperbell I can even get away with using only ED and even skipping healing on some trash packs. Depends on how fast stuff is dying and if the tanks bother with cooldowns.

Not necessarily. You can plan a clutch heal out. I tend to do this on my AST in the 60 and below (especially the <=50) dungeons , since Essential Dignity is so powerful for them. It's super easy to let the tank drop to about 20% health and hit them with an instant Essential Dignity and Aspected Benefic then go back to DPSing my heart out. In all but a few cases this is more than enough to get through most dungeon content at those levels these days.

Heck, one accepted raid strategy at one point for a specific fight was to have most of the party eat a massive damage attack and then have the healer who sat out of it LB3 them back to life rather than try to actually do the mechanic. That's the epitome of planned clutch healing lol.

With Sastasha you mean the level 15 dungeon, right, not the Hard version? I've seen ASTs heal through it successfully before SB in full time Cleric Stance and nothing but Essential Dignity before. It's not bad healer play if no one dies and the healer is spending rest of the time on DPS.

I do not understand this mindset at all, I bet if you were to die that healer would have placed all the blame on you. I truly do not understand this let the target get critical low before casting a heal, though I do not play healer so maybe it really is a thing among the healer community. I get spending as few GCD's on healing skills as possible, letting the target in this case tank get critical in a random group especially letting a starting out tank always get critically low without telling them in advance does not seem necessary to me. Granted I am sure from the healers POV he was never at risk, but clearly the tank felt otherwise. Communication goes a long way. Like hey it may seem like I am ignoring your hp, but do not worry I got you. Have faith in da heals. lol idk

Essential Dignity heals more the lower HP the target is, and it also has really high potency (able to heal target from critical health to full in low level instances), so it makes the most sense using this particular ability like this. And Benediction too, of course. It's simply the optimal way to use these abilities.

Of course this requires that the healer is able to predict the amount of incoming damage accurately and doesn't let the tank drop so low that they are in actual risk of dying.

Being a good tank means also being familiar with different healer jobs and their abilities and vice versa. I do agree that in an ideal situation things such as invulnerability cooldowns, benedictions, limit breaks and other significant abilities are communicated between party members, but that rarely happens in DF. Usually tanks and healers just need to watch each other's ability use and adjust their own playing accordingly if needed. But "letting the tank drop low and healing only when needed" has been the standard healer playstyle in this game since at least 2.0 and I don't think it should be separately communicated (it's similar to tank dropping tank stance for bosses - I never see that being called out either). And as a healer, I'm there to do my job, not to babysit the tank and protect their gentle feelings. :D (Edit: I do play tank too.)

Oh did not know that, I do have macros for when I use my invulnerability skill, and I also do have a macro for when I am dropping tank stance just to give the healer a heads up. I figured that was the norm for tanks to have such macros for when they use those skills. Granted I hardly ever leave DPS stance now, but I do have the macro.

Please do not misunderstand me I do understand that maximizing dps up time as a healer is the optimal way to heal in this game, and as a tank I do enjoy it since more responsibility is placed on me as a tank, which is fun. All I am saying is that a little communication is far from baby sitting.

I do not think this is a matter of protecting ones feelings and more so communication goes a long way. Seems to me if the healer in question let the tank in on what they were doing said tank would not have felt they were trolling and properly the overall run would have been more enjoyable for everyone.

This exactly, though this healer did state he "never heals when playing astro" and he directly told me "I'll heal you...sometimes...maybe" (he mentioned this at literally the last boss, not the beginning of the dungeon)

I'm fine with my health dropping really low but the reason I suspect trolling was his overall attitude and that when I had aggro he would spam helios until all the enemies ran to him. (at the beginning of fights when my health was full)

I dunno, it was just a bad experience, there are good healers, not so good- it happens.

It's a level 15 dungeon so your dps are gonna chew these mobs up anyhow. Any healer's basic heal will also heal for half a tank's hp pool so why all this micro-management? I'd just keep it simple and throw my stones at monsters while tossing my tank an occasional cure and do just as much dps.

Had a funny, albeit a bit trying Keeper of the Lake run yesterday.
The first two bosses already gave me fairly good overview of what to expect at the endboss. Though they were all ~60 save for the Ninja who was 51 they seemed to have either completely forgotten about any mechanics or never learned them at all. I always gave a brief overview for our Ninja who ran it for the first time but it always ended up being really chaotic.

Kicking the cannisters away to have a safe spot worked more or less with a few hiccups.
But with Gunship things went south. xD
Gunship targeted me, I ran to the side - and everyone followed me and stacked up. Guys... that's not how this works. :')
Group took tons of dmg but nobody died. Next target came and the Ninja couldn't decide where to run and ended up almost grilling our Summoner. So between the Dark Knight tank taking lots of dmg from the boss and our Ninja und Summoner almost grilling each other constantly, I spent almost all my time healing left and right and still had to ress the Ninja at some point. I don't think I ever spent so little time dpsing in a 50s dungeon.

With Midgardsormr, things got really entertaining. Brief overview and off we go!
Granted, there IS a lot of stuff to dodge. But the first wipe was simply because nobody killed the add in time. :x
Well, lesson learned, next try. I gave a few tips regarding positioning, reminded them to kill the add and hoped for the best.
Killing the add in time worked (barely) but when the barrier popped our Ninja still stood outside. We told him to get inside but he didn't read it in time. Dead Ninja in 3....2....1...
Probaly the only time were Rescue would've been really neat.
Instead I just uses Swiftcast, waited for him to die and raised him. :D
With every aoe usually two people got hit, sometimes three. Lots of spot healing because they tended to spread out too far for MedI/II. The tank messed up the positioning of the dragons a few times and the fight took far longer than neccessary, the Ninja always died in the expanding aoe because he ran out too late and ate all three explosions and the Summoner always ate Outer Turmoil because she stood too far south (+ a few other aoes). Spent pretty much every second either dodging or healing and raising left and right.
It sure kept me on my toes.

But all three of them were really nice. Dodging wasn't their strong point but no nasty words were exchanged. They even thanked me for my patience when Midgardsormr finally fell.
I don't mind people who struggle with dodging or mechanics as long as they keep it friendly and respectful. It's only when people instantly blame the healer that I lose my cool, because they only see who wasn't able to smooth out the mistake and not who actually made it.

Serious derp in Kugane Castle today. Everything's going pretty smoothly, it's a standard run, we are all doing our jobs. We get to Yojimbo, after the second round of his ultimate the LB is full two bars. I'm on SAM so I engage the LB.

Then the butterflies start to come down.

I watch, fully aware of what's about to happen as I bladedance Yojimbo and three butterflies overlap me.

Yep. One-shot, dead samurai on the floor. The scholar gives me a pity raise and the bard consoles me after he finishes the boss off.

I have lost count how many times I had this exact conversation.
Besides, with shortcuts left and right it's usually almost as fast as a hardcast raise + waiting for animation + switching protect back in & recasting it.

Not everyone chats during dungeons so the best thing you can do is do your job as a tank and use CDs etc. healers have different play styles some like clutch healing some don’t want to see you drop below 50%. What I would suggest is learning what toolkit each healer has because that lets you know what is on CD and what they can still use. This changes the size and speed at which I pull packs in dungeons. Also don’t forget to check how much mana they have, did they already use lucids. Being aware of these things increases the chance of a smooth dungeon. (Use the same awareness about your dps too)

Oh, divine justice! Loved it! I thankfully never had anyone complaining about it. DPS dies when the boss has less than the 10% of their HP. No use to revive the dead body. I just start moving behind the tank as I say "Just release".

You know, I've been playing for a few months now and up until now I didn't actually know you could avoid the rez weakness by warping to the start of the dungeon instead. Granted, I usually warp anyway if I somehow die to trash since it's usually not a log way to catch up with everyone.

Have a fun story. On Ala Mhigo, the AST just spoke up about bringing shame. She accidentally spread Spire instead of Spear. Me and other DPS both made a comment about committing sudoku. We all had laugh. It was a pretty quick run too.
