Because if you are patient, you get stuff like gear anyway, via dungeons/24mans etc. Repairs honestly do not cost much. Only thing left to buy is stuff for crafting which can be farmed unless you're lazy or a house? Assuming there are some available on your server. Apartments only cost 500k and you can make that in a day as I mentioned via Palace of the Dead atm. You could buy gear and penta meld it? But that's if you honestly care. There's no objective value to things to this game because whether you have things or do certain things or not do or have them, there's no penalty. You wont be excluded from anything in the DF and the only person stopping you from finding people to do stuff outside of DF is yourself and your ability to socialize.

There's value if vanity is important to you, but as far as doing activities in the game, gil does not stop you from doing them.

Name any other MMO that blocks you from doing a new expansion's content even if you are of appropriate level if you haven't completed all of the quests in the previous expansion.

That's a badge of uniqueness that FFXIV should not wear with pride. It's a horrible slog to click through hours upon hours of cut scenes - possibly wasting XP on a class you have ZERO interest in. I would really like to make a hyur machinist, but there's no way I'm leveling some other random class to 50 just to have the "privilege" of grinding fates and dungeons on machinist 30-50. It's absurd.

I agree that locking the classes behind the new zones was unfair (and one I disagreed with at the time they did it with Ishgard and Heavensward), but I 100% agree that keeping the new story progression behind the new zones makes sense. The area we are entering in 4.0 is occupied Garlean territory. A low level player who wanders into a Castrum by accident is going to very quickly have regrets; it makes sense that a new adventurer would be warned to avoid the Garlean territory east of East Shroud like the plague, no matter how cool the tales of red mages of yore from that area are. And even a seasoned adventurer who didn't know how to get past Garlean defenses would probably have regrets.

To be honest, I think the main concern for some is probably just the classes. If the new classes (for whatever reason) are stationed or move to 2.0 area (say Dancer gets a new expansion room in Ul'dah, Redmage perhaps in Limsa) then I assume most worries and concerns will be gone. Kinda how the initial class change was done and being level 10 first, lock these new jobs to level 30. 50-60 class quests in HW areas and finally 60-70 in Ala. However, I do agree in locking the new location by the story but classes, I'd assume that would turn a large number of people excited to jump in and play a certain job, only to find they have a LOT to do (or cutscenes to skip) to get to it

So? Warn them through the UI (already does with enemy levels ?? in red). I don't understand this obsession with policing where players go. It's a player's prerogative if they want to take their underleveled butt to a high level zone - whether it's to simply see things or to engage the community in those locations through RP or whatever.

It's true this is my main concern and nearly made me quit a second time. But I also disagree with so tightly controlling a player's every move by blocking them from physically entering a zone even when they've paid money for the expansion.

What reason would a fresh level 30 have in going to a level 60+ area? Other than running or sneaking to a town full of gear for 60+ characters.

With that sentence, are you advocating for or against the gating ?
If it's for, I don't see why you say this is unfortunate, and if it's against, the gating will precisely force people away from this mentality, which is a good thing.

Because if you want a story driven game there is something called Visual Novel. Zero gameplay, only story: no more no less. An RPG is still a game, where you play, and videogames have a priority on making the game "playable" first.
So yes, if a game is based solely on telling a story (visual novels, walking simulators, and stuff like that) I can call them niche because they don't cater to most players. Heck most of people I used to play with don't really care of stories in OTHER games too (fps, adventure, etc).

And what reward?I ask because there's really no reward that I know of (unless you mean cutscenes?).
In addition, new players will focus on NEW content, not OLD content. It's ok to keep old content somewhat "playable", but there will be a point where even the new ones will get tired. And I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one here.

For fun...?

When I played WoW, I ran my level 10 butt through the Plaguelands to attend RP events and meet up with other players. Did that for other zones, too. I've wandered around higher level zones in pretty much every MMO I've touched for various reasons that revolve around "for fun".

Death Knights aren't locked behind hours upon hours upon hours of story quests.

NONE of the three HW jobs are intrinsically tied to Ishgard. The DRK quest is literally just "let's do a bunch of terrible things in broad daylight to be as edgy as possible to go against all these stuck-up knights" which just as easily could have taken place elsewhere in Coerthas. I'm doing the AST quest right now and you aren't even learning Ishgardian astrology. The quest could be based out of the Observatorium and have NOTHING changed save for the location of the quest giver. As for machinist, they could have easily established a workshop just outside of Ishgard to serve as a player's introduction to the work.

There was no sane reason to lock those jobs behind Ishgard.
