Greatswords work perfectly. No need for Scythes. Botantist use those already anway.
Not to mention ... Do you see how bad-@ss that greatsword (likely relic) is???!! I can't wait.
As for other conversations about tanking properly. If you're going to level up a tank job, then you have to tank... that's uh.. kind of a no brainer.
Before it was actually announced, the idea of a Dark Knight tank made me rather angry. But that was because I was picturing it as if it was a secondary job from Gladiator (and thank god it's not). I couldn't see Dark Knight using a small single blade and a shield either.
Well both of those concerns are now properly laid to rest with the confirmation slides we've received, and though it's still a tank and not a dps... I can handle that. I'm excited to learn how it will tank and become a darn good Drk tank. I have already amazed players with my Gladiator and Marauder tanking skills at the lowest level dungeons where it's a real challenge to tank exceptionally well. So, I'm good. The description of Dark Knight works well enough for me. They look bad-@ss, their weapon looks bad-@ss and they use dark magic. So they tank instead of full dps, I can deal with that now.
Yeah, I know. Just would like the option. I wish more jobs could equip different weapons. That being said I do love great swords too...
Final Fantasy IV
FF4 PSP Cecil Darkness
Darkness, also known as Dark or Dark Wave, is used by Dark Knight Cecil. Darkness has a Charge Time of 2. It deals non-elemental damage to all enemies by consuming his HP, but flan-type monsters are immune to it. If Cecil uses it too much he can KO himself when low on HP. This command was removed from the North American SNES version but during Cecil's encounter with his Dark Knight copy during his Paladin trial, the copy still uses this move.
In the remake of Final Fantasy IV for DS and iOS, Darkness is a completely different ability that empowers physical attacks at the cost of the user's HP.
Crisis Core -Final Fantasy VII
Zack can use Darkness by equipping the Darkness Materia. By sacrificing 12.5% of his HP, the player may damage all enemies within a radius around Zack, ignoring vitality. The ability costs no AP to use. The Darkness Materia is obtained as a reward for missions 4-4-2 and 8-4-6, and is dropped by Demon and Horned Devil, and stolen from Land Malboro.

Doesn't mean Cecil isn't a tank. He has the option of sacrificing HP, but as a character, he was still tanky. And yes, people have argued Kain was tanky too, but that doesn't mean they have to ignore that vision for Cecil. I'd say he worked as either a DPS OR a tank. SE just went with the latter.
On a slightly unrelated note, I think it would be cool if DRG was a bit more tanky. Oh well.
Why is it that no one got bothered that WAR became a tank in FFXIV too? Aside from FFXI (and still WAR was better as a DPS on that one too), WAR has always been a top DD class, with a lot of dmg increasing abilities (if any) but no one complained. I'm sure a big axe on your face should be more dmging than some punchs from MNK and a few dagger swipes from NIN but everyone is ok with that.
DRK uses heavy armor, have a lot of HP and is somehow a Dark Paladin. It fits. Paladin is just Knight in JPN so a "Dark" Knight wouldn't be so different. DRK will most likely use the "power of darkness" to tank via debuffs of some sort, by making the enemy weaker and crippling it rather then just blocking with a shield.
I always kinda saw Cecil as a tank...because like most tanks, if he fell over, you were pretty much screwed. Rydia pls
