This "what if" question is the biggest wonder of mine. Even if Yoshi makes a half-decent MMO out of FFXIV by doing what he thinks is salvaging it, I can't help but wonder if Tanaka would have been able to make a better than half-decent MMO just by sticking to the original vision. You know?

Yeah I am wondering that too. I know Tanaka would have made a good game eventually.. the only question is was his head stuck in the sand so far that the basic problems we're seeing addressed right now would have gone unaddressed?

I think what I've decided from reading this thread is that Tanaka = vision but bad manager, Yoshida = great manager. I do like the idea of them working together. I wish Tanaka would be in charge of content development or something with Yoshida having the final say in relating that content to gamers.

Tanaka had his chance and blew it.

If you read you would have new the reason FFXIV fail was because the CEO hurry up the team. So yes Tanaka fail only because he did not have enough time.

i'm sorry but did none of the big wigs see any of the beta feedback? did tanaka hide it from them and keep it hidden trying make this game fail? was he an undercover agent from another company trying to sabotage se?

the answer is, no, i can bet anything they knew how bad it was before it was released and said well we are going to release it anyway because it needs to get on the market now. people will love it because it has final fantasy on the title. they knew if it was ok when it hit the shelves and people accepted it they could finish letting tanaka make the game the way it was going. the problem was it tanked so tanaka became the fall guy because they could say we didn't know it is this bad.

can you honestly say if you are a higher up in a company that produces games you have no clue of what condition the product is in before you sign off on it being released? i would have been over his shoulder everyday checking on the condition of the game and seeing what progress is made. this is especially true if i looked at the beta testers feedback and seen how horribly it was received. can you say you would have never even checked the beta feedback to see what those people thought about it?

i don't know if tanaka would have made a hit out of this game or not, but i liked the direction alot better than we have now. aggro icons, ! over npc heads, horrid side quests, 4 foot tall rats, and auto-attack are the ideas yoshi has instituted in the game since he has been here. are these the kind of fixes we think will make the game better?

sure being able to start a battle and go into active mode then go grab coffee while auto attack beats the mob is exactly what this game needs. we now have our own square enix approved farm bots.

the choice is easy for me and it is tanaka's vision to be completed instead of trashing the new systems that had such potential.

yep Tanaka vision would have been best, if i remember when he was doing interview everyone was like o.o this sound great can't wait. Top of that remember Tanaka play the game but everyone else who was working on it did not because they feel it was taking a spot from players. I think tanaka knew this game was not really but was told to release it.

I think Tanaka was inbetween a rock and a hard place when he took on FFXIV, he is a good producer but maybe SE pushed him too hard and he had to cut corners here and there. Don't forget they had to develop this game with PS3 in mind and the limit on the memory was a huge stumbling block. The fact that a lot of the staples of FF titles were not available from launch further justify's that Tanaka simply did not have enough time to implement everything he wanted too. SE pushed for the release and then got a huge pile of fail for there efforts, It would be a good guess that Tanaka knew his job was under threat before launch. Tanka's vision in my opinion leans more towards a mix mash of old MMO techniques and new ideas which didnt really seem to work at launch, we dont know that full vision and we never will so who's to say that with another year or so Tanka might have been able to make a master piece. Yoshi-P however now has a sinking ship and a bucket to keep it afloat, it would be resonable to suggest that he might consult Tanka on his vision and ideas and encorporate them with his own. Yes, Yoshi has a more modern mmo experience but who is to say he cannot use that experience to make something new and exciting while keeping the FF feel, he himself has already stated the game doesnt have a FF feel and he wants to put that back into the game. This game needs something to drag it back from the brink, I have faith in Yoshi he seems connected to the players along with having a strong feeling of what FF titles should be. The mild-mannered person in me would have to agree with this. But as much as I would like to give Yoshi the benefit of the doubt, the stuff he has done so far forces me to do otherwise. Only time will tell, I guess, as to whether he will take the game somewhere as new and exciting as was promised. I will always be checking back, I'm sure. So we will have to see.

If he make this into a wow mmo i'm going to give up on MMO FFXI was a awesome game played it for 6years but could not stand the cap 85-99 idea. When i found about FFXIV it give me hope for a new game and hoping this would be something like ffxi but something new all together. The idea of adding raids and dungeons got me really thinking this may be come WoW game. I know that FFXI had dungeons and some type of raids but it was not named that and that what made it fun for me. As long as the raids and Dungeons are not like WoW because sadly i played wow for 2month and am not even playing it any more -.- am sick of the same thing over and over each time. the PVP really lack and it's lame if you don't have BoA giving a person a item that you can only get when you 85 really make me sick because it does not help new players at all. Top of that can't stand wow players everytime there a fight they pull out who doing best dps -.-

Anyways back on topic as long as FFXIV does not become WoW i'm fine with it. At the release wow players would flooding in FFXIV and calling there char toon lol i remind them it's "Char not toon"

Anyways i'm still hopeful for this game but so far it not looking so good for ffxiv.

Tanaka.

Hell, i must say that the core system from FFXIV is what made me love it. The game was (when Tanaka was kicked) in a raw way (still is) but the quality of the core systems and ideas behind it were unique and, if he had more time, i bet it would be superior in every single aspect than FFXI when we reached septemper (first anniversary).

I support Yoshida since now he's the one in charge...but if i could chose i'd stay with Tanaka in a heartbeat.

I think at this point i prefure Yoshi altho i cant say i ever had any personal perference and Favorites for many or any producers or directors, yoshi does seem to be trying to base the future desicions on players inputs on all the polls hes been throwing out with enough of a choice for clear direction ,i can say its kept me checking back all the time for new posts wanting to discussing the future growth hoping for a kickass feature to get stuck in the game via what we as a whole decided towards.

If they delayed this mabey by a year or close i think tanaka would be there still without the slight stigma some people may have towards him now tho, being in pressure from higher ups to push it out fast was ultimatly why he got pushed out overwise im sure he'd be on the projext for a longtime to come with a great game on his roster.

For now Yoshida's biggest achievement has been due to his PR abilities. The increased communication is something everyone of us can appreciate. However i can't help feeling it's mostly a way to keep us busy and interested by discussing on these forums and doesn't serve the purpose of asking our opinion about how to improve the game.
No one asked for aggro icons, after all, yet they were implemented over and before many things that were being asked and are still being asked on these forums.

We also have to admit that on paper FFXIV was quite the innovative mmorpg, and the graphics are excellent. It all comes down to the lack of content, bugs, and badly implemented features (due to lack of testing). These are huge mistakes, but anyone can see how they are all due to an early release and not a misguided direction. The true causes of this are only known to SE and it seems that they judged Tanaka responsible.

At the same time, no one seems to realize Yoshida isn't some directing genius called to the rescue, but as he said himself, a fairly unknown PR stuntman who has always worked behind the scenes. His job is to keep us happy. The fundamental changes in the dev team lie in the battle system developer, concept artist and lead programmer, plus other related figures as stated here (http://lodestone.finalfantasyxiv.com...d5253e4362e17f).

In conclusion, what SE did was simply to change development direction, adding some of their most experienced figures to the team. To discuss which director is better by associating the whole state of the game to one of them or the other is pointless, in my opinion. There are multiple factors that contribute to making this game what it is.

On my side, having to chose a director i prefer, i will always chose the one who actually directed and produced more games that i love. In this case, it is Tanaka.

For all you guys know, this could still be Tanaka's roadmap. Yoshida might just be tweaking it here and there, and changing the priorities around.

Or better yet, perhaps Tanaka is working "behind the scenes" and Yoshida is here just to make people smile. ;D

OR... OOOOOR.... Perhaps Yoshida and Tanaka are girlfriend and boyfriend. ;D (okay, that might be going too far in the conspiracy)

Pitchforked by the player base who doesn't understand the project's goals and doesn't really care to. I'd wash my hands and walk away with a few choice curse words then either go to Mistwalker or retire.

To me, you don't get Tanaka if you can't sit your ass down and shut up for a minute. And we clearly can't do that as "empowered gamers."

Tanaka doesn't make your game. He makes his game. He's done with this, man. Empowering gamers to call the shots as a generic collective is incompatible with Tanaka's style.

Tanaka would not have stood for a single update since he stepped down. Agro icons? MP regen? He would backhand whoever pitched those in front of everyone and make them sit on the floor in the development meetings.

Tanaka's the guy who added fatigue to everything to give most players a shot at keeping up with the teens and addicts, knew there would be utter riotting, and didn't care. He's not calling the shots any more. You can already tell he's gone.

Damn. There is more truth in this than what i can possibly accept. Then again, releasing the game in that condition that soon was a lapse in judgement and could only have this consequence. His doing as he pleased either went too far, or was met with the incompetence of his colleagues.

You can't blame us, the mass of ignorant players, for their failures. If they said "we release in three years" instead of two we would have waited. If they said "we release in two years but will do six months of beta test", we would have probably been overjoyed. This is someone's failure and it surely isn't ours.

Yoshi. Tanaka tried to hard to make it completely different from xi, when a lot of people wanted common elements from xi upgraded in a new setting, like most mmos that make sequential titles. Yoshi knows what those of us from XI want, we don't want XI recreated, but we would like some of XI's features we felt were crucial to our mmo experience, and he's giving us that. Plus I like that post about auto-attack, its not Yoshi, but it is the new devs he was like "deal with it, we're adding it, you complained about the other stuff so deal with this", i like that, don't listen to EVERYTHING we say lol.

Well - I want whats in the Letter from the Producer III also. It just seems like there has been little update to that roadmap in the last two months (and I understand that there was a major catastrophe in the middle of that). But I appreciated the use of the roadmap, and showing progression against it. Sadly, Yoshi seems to have abandoned what I found to be a useful tool to follow the status of development activities. Letters from the Producer seem to have degraded starting with "musings from the airplane" and gone downhill from there.

We've definitely crossed some items off both the Nov Tanaka list and the February Yoshi list, but it's a lot harder to see what the expectations are for the team when we just get the "trust us, new stuff soon" type of thing in the last few letters.

The Grand Companies do seem quite interesting: perhaps a more party-oriented story-scenario feature? But I wonder if they may end up just as more forgettable NPC quests in reality.

Time is pressing on and FFXIV still fails to really offer much beyond the armory system and nice graphics. Hmm.

From what i see in this patch Tanaka -.- bring his ass back too the front line this guy is crazy not even wow is not casual.

Are you guys serious? Tanaka didn't get call in September telling him the deadline is in a couple weeks, he knew long before, so the failures of the game fall on his shoulders. Furthermore, this game has been released for over 6 months now and it still has no content, so on top of the fact that the game was buggy, lame and generally crappy at release, they didn't even have much in the works for it at that point in terms of content - this tells me that they realistically thought that people would be completely happy with guildleves...they're delusional and I still hate guildleves and how central a role they play in the game. Tanaka sucks, period. I loved FFXI but he didn't make an FFXI he made a broken and a half of a game that is FFXIV and I don't want to play any more of his games no matter what they are.

On top of this, I don't care who is at the helm to be honest (apart from Tanaka). Yoshi-P isn't the second coming of Christ, he's not special because "he connects with the fans", he's a SE employee and he's doing what's told of him. Trust me, the old dev team and the new dev team are one and the same save for a few people and any additions to the team over time (which happen whether Tanaka or whoever was leading, not because they needed fresh faces) - you can bet that Tanaka is still very much involved with this game. Anyway, you guys need to be patient, this game is in beta still and the one time you can truly judge it is at PS3 release.

ya playing it quit few weeks ago got bored of it. :( i don't know why we can't meet somewhere in the middle here causal are running the show i get it but i bet if they add hardcore stuff casual would be like hell no and SE would make it more casual then it just mess the point of it being hardcore

Most of that five years was finishing up the engine. Nobody can say for certain how much time they truly had at their disposal.

But anyway, I just wanted to say that I agree FFXIV did meet total failure upon release. But the release was of course rushed, even Yoshi said so. The FFXIV at release had massive potential. Now, under Yoshi, that potential seems to shrink. Don't you agree?

I can lol 2years at best FFXIV was only 50% by E3 of 2009 and then 60+% ish in gamescom everything else took 5years to make the crystal tool just to even make the game lol.Tanaka had no dam at all to make this game i blame the dam CEO thank you -.-

I got the impression by the letter of apology way back that Tanaka is still going to be on the team, but wont be director/producer anymore. I am sure there was some sort of turnover where Tanaka handed over his gameplan to Yoshi-P to study, consider, and decide on a best course of action. I highly doubt they just straight up kicked Tanaka out and put Yoshi-P behind his desk with a pile of stuff on it. There had to have been a turnover, and if Yoshi-P decided that perhaps changing the course of the game slightly or deviating from Tanaka's original vision, then I would rather put my trust there.

Tanaka was responsible for the launch of FFXIV, and he failed. Sure it probably wasn't entirely his fault, but he was responsible for it. I trust Yoshi-P to decide whether that original vision is something that can be delivered in a timely and productive manner or if they need to deviate from the original vision. The one thing Tanaka did well pre launch was hype the game up to be super amazing. Nobody ever saw even half of his ideas even slightly emerge in alpha, beta, or even release. So who's to say he ever would? It was all talk, and he couldn't back it up.

I like Yoshi-P, but I do hope that Tanaka is still there somewhere, because he obviously had a plan and I think it's important not to deviate too far from it, but Yoshi-P is doing a great job.

To sum it all up, people don't know what the hell they even want anymore. Instead, they'd just rather whine and complain about what has already been implemented, no more than 24 hours ago.

Its one thing to whine and complain, but I've seen some major disrespect around here. Even wanting to bring Tanaka back? Wasn't he the cause of the new dev team in the first place? Let alone he is still working on the game anyways, so wtf people.

Anyways, this is like slapping Yoshi_P in the face after he just tried to give you a better game. Quit the hating and provide some actual feedback! Stop whining, and instead, throw in what you'd like to see changed. Is it that hard?

I should make a thread about closing the forums down, but that would just be one huge oxymoron.

So far Tanaka has given us XIV and great things in IX and XI. Naoki Yoshida however has yet to prove himself with anything else than a quick tongue and fondness to write long posts with no concrete info.

Tanaka also gave us Yoshi_P if ya wanna put it that way.

And let's remember that Naoki still isn't a game designer on XIV Tanaka however is. So basically all the new systems are still designed mostly by him and not N.Yoshida. I can tell that none of the videogame projects I've been involved with has had a producer that had any say in the gameplay mechanics. Yet people seem to assume that he's almost single handedly designing all the new stuff being added to XIV (maybe someday just wait a little longer etc.)
