Do people on these forums only complain endlessly?

OP might want to check the subreddit. Endless circlejerking how wonderful the game, community or some content is. Or maybe art commission or a new player writing about their first hour and calling ffxiv the best game ever without realising they are still on their honeymoon time

It's the best, but it could be better. There also isn't much competition out either. I personally hate ESO, if it wasn't for it being "Elder Scrolls" I'd never have accumulated so much playtime in it. Funnily enough, as people have said, I didn't care much about the game, barely used their forums.

I don't have a lot of other outlets to vent about things. And it's a lot easier to complain about nothing than it is to praise something that's excellent.

ESO was my main MMO home for many years before I reterned to Eorzea. I really love how it delved into lore that the other Scrolls games rarly did, even if some Chapters did lean a little too far into nostalgia. I would honestly play it more had the 'Subscription' for it become so nessary for things like DLC and item managment haha.

Do people on these forums only complain endlessly? Now you’re doing it too.

It’s a little concerning that these days complaining is consider ‘trolling’ people. While there are some genuine trolls messing with people, it’s like people aren’t allowed to like a game a game but also be able to express what they also don’t like about a game. Things really aren’t that black and white.
Some of my favorite games are the games I complain the most about because I love them deeply but wish they could do better. But I guess that’s just ‘trolling’.

The lore in it is pretty bad, and that's saying something for a game set in the ES universe. Although, the questing is still semi-enjoyable if you are an ES fan. That's one of the only MMOs where I have characters with their actual racial naming conventions, just like I do in the single player games. My high elf main is actually named as a high elf would be. I primarily played that game for the questing and story content. Some customization too, I will admit I bought into the FOMO of outfits multiple times from the cash shop. The lootboxes really kill it for me though. Oh and the housing system is pretty good too, better than this game for sure, other than how heavily monetized it is.

Always has been. Even if someone isn't presumably "trolling", if it is an opinion that is averse to many in the FF community, it is seen as that.

It hasn't always been, it's just difficult to remember anything else. Prior to about 2001 the default assumption when you saw a nonsensical or super-provocative argument on the internet was that the person was just an earnest a-hole, not that they were posting in bad faith to try to get a rise out of people.

If you wish to find positivity, check subreddit /ffxiv

If you wants to find negativity, check anywhere else.

Even though some of the posts are kinda meme, this is probably the only official path to bring up your issues or suggestions with the game so those kinda get highlighted.

It's all in the delivery of the message. If someone can highlight the problems in a polite manner and not resort to things like name calling and accusing people of lying, while also remaining open to what the other side has to say, a conversation can take place and an understanding can be reached.

If not, then it drifts into the realm of trolling and just shitting on something. Sadly, a lot of people just like to do that. Any excuse to try and tear someone down, whether it's a 1 star review somewhere or what have you. They can generally do it without repercussion. People are used to talking a lot of shit and not getting slapped for it. At least here, someone will answer back. :)

No matter how straightforward or polite one tries to frame their message as, it seems there are always individuals who are unwilling to entertain new ideas unless they come from Yoship himself. Nevertheless, I think it is in the best interest of the game for its areas of improvements to be openly discussed.

There's nothing polite about your approach, especially when you accuse people of having this devotion to Yoshi-P. Meanwhile, you refuse to acknowledge any possibility you didn't come up with yourself. It's funny how you know what's best for the game, yet it appears to be doing well not following that path.

A 680+ page megathread criticizing the story and not a single patch since EW going down smoothly is doing well? With the WoW refugee boost gone this game isn't exactly set to retain even its current playerbase unless they start producing better, longer lasting content and a better story arc moving forward. I'm willing to wait and see what they do with the MSQ, but I am extremely concerned given the quality of EW's writing and the disaster that was 6.1.

If "doing well" means betraying the players who joined in during the Heavensward and Shadowbringers era who expected a well crafted story worth getting invested in so that they could pander to those who consider the likes of Island Sanctuary, Tweetingway, and the many slice of life/humor moments in the MSQ to be well done, then I suppose the game will continue to self select for those sort of players while those like me move on.

OP seems lacking in self awareness

opinions are like butt holes. everybody got one but they do not think there stinks.

Truth be told it all depends on how you look at it. Some make valid points, some do not. Some use logic and link creditable information some using feeling and what they see.

New data centers for a 10+ year old MMO is not something I've heard of. It usually goes in the other direction over that stretch of time.

Patches not going smoothly comes with the territory of an MMO. Some things are beyond our control and it's much more peaceful when you just accept it.

You continue to claim to speak for this overwhelming majority, yet you have no real impact on the game's direction. 680 pages of tears is nothing in the scope of the internet. :p I doubt even half of those posts are from unique individuals.

I don't know what a "tweetingway" is, but I think a big problem in the story itself is that they rely way too much on the lighthearted comedy, and fanservice nowadays. They are known for writing decent stories, with a serious tone, and a lot of that kind of gets in the way when there is so much of it now, in my opinion.

Of course I love the genocidal mass murderers; that's hot.

I just wish people would be honest about the genocidal mass murderer on their side, too.

Understood, sorry for any offense caused, but there does seem to be an aversion from some to anything the game may do that is not ‘serious’ such as the now infamous G'raha Burger scene. Sure Tweetingway was an obvious marketing scheme, but this is a video game. They happen, and honestly I think FFXIV has had some of the better ones compared to other franchises. I love that they spent a week live streaming from a London petting zoo for example. Hope they do it again next time Island Sanctuary gets a big update.

No worries, I'm not offended. I just think it's worth remembering that a lot of what the game passes off as 'humour' just doesn't vibe with a lot of us. Sometimes it's arguably poorly timed - imagine if, instead of taking the time to honour the dead slain in Ala Mhigo the game just skipped that in favour of Loporrit style stuff immediately afterwards.

There's also cultural differences to consider. A lot of marketing gimmicks are very 'in one's face' in a way that isn't common where some of us live.

I'm personally in the camp where I'd prefer the marketing to focus on remembering that Europeans exist since we're still left in the dark as to whether or not we'll ever get access to some of the promotional mounts/emotes that have been readily given to American and Japanese audiences. Which, I suppose, is another reason why the feigned attempts to be 'down with the players' rubs some of us the wrong way.

Fair. Like most things it the game humour is subjective. Personally I think the game normally handles the Balance well, but each to their own.

Oh as a UK player I can understand that. I want/ed the Chocorpokkur mount so bad... I would bet pesky contract and license issues get in the way, which really sucks. Its the same with other franchises I love like Star Trek where European viewers and fans always get left out and forgotten about. Certainly and issues where we need to make our voices heard, though I doubt the poor Internway controlling the tweets had anything to do with it nor those doing the live stream.

The FF's in general are a variety in this way, though. Take something like FF6, and it was definitely a "serious" tone throughout. On the other hand, FF9 still ultimately told a serious story, but the feel of the entire game was a lot more lighthearted and humorous. FF14 seems to be more of an FF9 approach in that way, and frankly, the fanbase for FF14 far and away loves the fanservice and the feel.

Frankly, it's meaningless. When you consider that much of that thread is either just the same small handful of people posting repeatedly or other people disagreeing with the thread and praising the game, the length of it means next to nothing. If anything, when you consider the long-time negative echo chamber on these forums, it actually speaks to how positively EW is viewed because there's a larger number of people who thoroughly enjoy it finding their way here and pushing back against the negativity.

It's also important to remember that this mythical "a lot of us" doesn't really hold any sway. When you have a game with hundreds of thousands of players, there will be "a lot" of people taking practically any opinion on anything. It doesn't mean they represent any substantial portion of the playerbase, though. Like with this. The clear majority of players show in polling that they enjoy the humor, they like the Scions, they like EW...all takes that show up anywhere you go except these forums.

I find it part-amusing, part-disappointing that some people will say they come here to complain because it's the only place such sentiments are tolerated, yet at the same time act as if their views are widely shared. Evidently, there are a plethora of subreddits and other sites that are overwhelmingly positive and shut down "criticism," and this forum is the "only" place such negative comments exist, yet somehow these naysayers insist they must represent the majority of players. Common sense would point out that the enormous number of positive-sites compared to one negative site demonstrates that the negative opinions are far and away the minority.

A while back, the FFXIV twitter (EN at least) was "taken over" by Tweetingway for a day. It was a fun / cute interaction with the followers. (It reminded me of when GMs would appear in older MMOs like Everquest 1 and 2.) The game trends pretty much daily, so I don't see it as any sort of marketing gimmick.

I just think they have taken to relying on it too much nowadays, like I was saying in my post. It's not really that the game has lighthearted comedic moments, or fanservice. It's the amount of it, and when/where it's appropriate to be used.

I wouldn't wish that on them.

FFIX did not glorify suffering or use humor in such a heavy handed and inappropriate way and I am shocked that there people who would compare it to FFXIV. In any case, I suppose that the more time passes and the game loses us more serious fantasy fans the more the reddit, twitter, and other sites will come to be populated by these new players who don't seem to want or care for a story that actually balances levity and seriousness.

I cannot recommend Endwalker to those of us who liked stories like FFIX, FFX, Dragon Age Origins, Elden Ring, so on. This expansion did not respect the game world nor its characters and upended 10 years worth of lore and storytelling to tell a story which fell apart in too many peoples eyes compared to even the likes of Stormblood, which at least didn't push its message in a way that was as badly received as Endwalker's.
