Are retainers even gonna be in 2.0? I thought they would change to something less scamy, like they want to do with the characters.

I know when the game launched they had delusional ideas of retainers leveling up and being more important but that went nowhere.
I just don't see the point in keeping them (other than the original idea "give them storage mules instead of actual characters because we don't have a mail system") if we're going to have houses (with storage I assume) and an AH that should on paper not need retainers to function.
I don't see any issues arising sharing U/U items between your own characters (Although you may be right in the case of quested gear they may need to add a extra tag to items to bind them to a character)
or perhaps certain items preform a check on your quest list not allowing you to hold them until you are finished said quest.

i..just...don't understand it...its as if your answering with a line that can lead you into complaining about something you don't like.
I shoulda known he ALREADY had a thread about it....
It really doesn't matter. Let Alt lovers love it, if your not into it, ignore it.
People will use Mules one way or another. This hardly needed a thread, nevermind a "NEW" thread.
And for heavens sake stow your ego and stop putting your name on the subject. Let your point stand on its merits and let a debate begin.
Preventing people from creating alts is probably the dumbest idea I've ever read on this forum. Charging extra letting you play with a different group of friends was a pretty dick move in FF11, and I was apalled when I saw FF14 raising this extra cost to three times more than it was in 11. I was thoroughly pleased to see the planned subscription models for 2.0.
It will no doubt encourage me to play level more characters on the same world, and also on additional worlds to play with a bigger array of friends. This will most likely keep me playing FF14 for a longer time than if I just got one character included in the subscription fee. And as said earlier, it doesnt' lead to server overpopulation because you can still only be logged in to one character at a time per account.
So.... Rokien,...when's your "Rokien's new locked Thread" about to be posted?

Also, there is a chunk of "Altoholics" who love creating multiple characters.
I'm a person who likes rolling a character not an Avatar. Coming form games where you can only roll one class and stick with that class, that sort of hobby has stuck with me in my gaming. In FFXI, no matter how hard I tried to pull away form it, Hyrist was always a Red Mage. I had to roll other characters to break away from the image that perpetuated in my mind.
The same is happening for Lin Celistine. Sure, I'll level other classes for her to help round out her skillset (especially if there are multiple Lancer jobs coming out.) But she doesn't feel right using anything but a spear. That's the identity of the character to me.
Having 8 character slots, lets me keep that habit. Group needs a Marauder or Warrior for a run? I'll switch to Labra, the Kitty Axe Murderer.
So yeah. I'm ok with having multiple character slots.
Now, the option to re-establish those 'white' blocks for slots there when you're not using them, I'm ok with.
But I remember my final fantasies having multiple playable characters, not just one. I realize this is an MMO, but some of us like having a cast of characters to play.
This is the dumbest thread I have seen since these forums opened.
I don't understand how anybody could be affected and against other peoples decisions to make multiple characters.
.. lmao
^Truth.
Seriously, let people have their fun.
Whatever alleged "exploits" may arise are pretty much irrelevant at this point in time. The game will change come 2.0 so saying what people could or could not do is kind of silly.
However, forcing people to stay as one character is just plain stupid and it should never, ever, EVER be implemented.
To be perfectly honest, using FFXI is a bad example because the biggest reason people made alts in FFXI is because of massive inventory issues. It still has massive inventory issues.
FFXIV on the other hand, starts you off with 200 personal iventory slots (compare to FFXI's 30) and on top of that you get x2 retainers with 150 slots each (compare to FFXI's no retainer). So that means that players have 500 inventory slots. Being able to upgrade to a total of 1000 slots via quest would be awesome. As it was pointed people should not be 500/500 unless you're hoarding (guilty as charged at times) or saving up mats to go craft, which is what I typically do.
So, to worry about the rather vague "exploits" is quite silly as people would more than likely create a character for the new experience of playing a different race and the lore that accompanies it. That is, since inventory is not nearly as big of an issue in FFXIV as it was in FFXI.
Some people just want to play a different race.
Sometimes people want a break from their main character, especially if they're in an endgame shell. I've known plenty of people in FFXI who leveled their alts as a break from their main.
Let people have their fun.
You do realize a dick move would be an MMO like WoW charging for extra characters, right?
FFXI and FFXIV has 1 character that can do everything, so charging $1 extra in XI for example was charging for the ID, not the character and if you truly needed or wanted a character, you will buy the ID.
You were restricted to the one you can take to 100 (prior to earlier this year), and the rest to 60 (generally more than high enough to do a lot of the synths that aren't main to 1 category, i.e cursed gear was generally fairly up there cap wise.)
Since we already know of one set of restrictions to come (lower inventory space since crystal wise it was temporary) but aside that there isn't much they can limit in this game besides if they do introduce a retainer sharing type system.
You have no idea how this could effect anyone? Really? There are many ways, especially if you can just reroll give all your stuff to your new char, all you would have to do is spend a week leveling up one class to 50. There are many ways this could get out of hand. I know, I play with a person who does crap to other people, and he will take advantage of this.
It can't do everything. One character can't let me play with people I know on two different servers. It would be a dicker move is WoW did it, yeah. Doesn't mean it isn't still a dick move in FF11.
What is the reasoning for charging extra for additional characters anyway if you "expect" players to do everything with one character? The hardware and management cost for an additional server is so low that charging extra for it is like charging extra for a paper tissue at a restaurant. It just leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
server transfer solves all problems
1 main, 7 mules. Problem?
If someone wants to spend all that time and effort doing that, it's up to them. Some people also re-roll for less malicious reasons. Out of hand though? Hardly. Other MMOs allow you to do this and I've never personally seen an issue with that. People are allowed to do what they want with character spaces.
Advantage? Sure but it's something that everyone can do. It's not against any rules set forth in the game or the ToS.
i like playing multiple charecter's even in ffxi i had 3 diffrent main's i played regularly and several alt's who i saved for when i wasn't feeling sociable/didn't want to deal with friend's/ls.
people like that are going to behave badly no matter what limiting how many charecter's isn't going to change that. some people just enjoy annoying or pissing off other people just black list em and move on.
blame SE for making too many servers with such a small population game
I don't plan on blaming them for anything. The issue will be solved in v2, seeing as they will at the bare minimum let you create a character on 8 different servers, and 8/40 for legacy and "full" subscription plans.
I'm just here to display my disagreement with Rokien's suggestion of denying people alternative characters.
"Some people might use them as alts for inventory space" how does this effect you?
"Some people won't be attached to all of their characters" how does this effect you?
"Some people might use 7 slots as mule accounts" how does this effect you?
"Some people might reroll and give all their gear to their new character" how does this effect you?
The only thing that could possible effect you is people making alt's to troll and this can be solved without the hassle of preventing people from enjoying the game how they want to - an option for blacklisting all characters from that account. You don't need to come up with these grandiose ideas that penalize everyone just because "some people might" instead come up with real solutions to problems. Heck, for you "inventory" argument you could just make it so that you can't mail things to your other characters (but I don't agree with that either, but it's a better alternative than "NO ONE CAN HAVE FREE ALTS")
In regards to every other point you made - it doesn't effect you, so don't complain about it.
Yet in XIV your inventory gets filled with unnecessary crap after even one session of grinding it's actually worse management than XI ever had.
Between capped native inventory, Mog Sack and Satchel, I have zero inventory problems even with gear swapping, and I played all of the mages ontop of Corsair.
Uh, and what other people choose to do is your business, how? If others want 8 characters (Most are usually family who wanna play the same game but don't care if they don't play together) why do you care? No one is forcing you to have 8. What is because of the limited inventory, people one a battle main, a crafting alt, and a gathering alt? Or what if people just plain want more than one character? (Maybe they wanna pretend to be more than one person? Maybe they roleplay?)
I had two characters in XI. One was a RDM as main, and also did other jobs, and my alt character was strictly a thief... Simply because I wanted to. It was actually easier than going home and swapping out inv/gear to change to a different job, because my alt was already dressed up and prepared for the job.
Still don't see the issue here.
Instead of the 'waah, people who aren't legacy have to pay for their extra inventory spaces'.
Whatever. People had their chance, and were given a warning when there was a deadline hitting. That opportunity to jump on a good offer has come and gone. Mailing between mules were just as much a part of FFXI's economy as it will be here in FFXIV.
And the fact that you're allowed multiple per server is just catching up with the business policies of today's mmos. Your griefing reports will be attached to your account, not just your character, creating and deleting characters for that purpose won't save you as that information is stored in their database. (Or should be, get on that if you don't, guys.)
So what's the real substance of these complaints, if any? You don't like multiple characters? Don't use them. I can understand complaints about the visual issues with the character list (Lin is listed as 2/3 open slots even though only one is paid for.) But not having multiple characters available? That's foolish complaining as usual.
Again, zero difference between this and having multiple mules in FFXI. (I had as many as three.) So long as the AH system works properly in 2.0 there should be zero congestion issues.
So what you're saying is because having multiple character slots might cause problems, they shouldn't let us? Well 2.0 might have some problems too, so let's just cancel that while we're at it.
I imagine the "Point" is to show what could happen and become the "Gold standard" of exploiting a system for more storage space.
Especially when SE is trying to monotize the whole thing with retainers to a extent.
