If they have the helmet on the trashcan armor or the sugar loaf hat vanish people will be sad; that's a rite of passage we all go through.
I think I'm starting to understand the problem.
Because of 1.0 spaghetti code and the way character data is saved on the server, there is a limited amount of parameters that can be saved. It's the reason why Au Ra faces and horns are linked, they can't split them because they'd run out of memory.
So in order to open up more customization for the new races they repurposed the parameters for full helmets, face coverings and ./visor options. Regular coverings are still possible but with clipping.
So the trade off is Viera ears, hair and faces and probably more being seperate and more combinations being possible against headgear that would have looked bad or would have to hide the ears regardless.
Still. I hope we can get some more clear info on what will and won't be visible. I main SMN and the horn is too iconic. Same with Ninja and masks. Full helmets are an understandable sacrifics, many other options aren't.
I want them to actually make one that works. If they just go back regular head gears thinking people will just hide them, they'll never try to actually make it work. This hiding thing makes me feel optimistic that someday they will actually find a style that works. I doubt they'll hid the slot for these races forever.
I mean I know 1.0 was drowned in its over attention to detail. But like How gear had ears for Miqote and Elezen, tail hole/details for Miqote (which also now apply to Au'Ra) and other details like that were good! And Im sad they couldn't do the same for these races. Of course they haven't been working on these races for long so really they just need more time, and really should have started the races sooner!
According to an Impress/Gamewatch iterview, the head gears of the two new races will not be shown with the exception of those that can be done by "head replacement".
The "head replacement" is those like snow man gear, chocobo head, namazu head (Yoshida "err... It's not out yet...?").
As someone pointed out, adding new races means double the time to create equipments and they are currently at the limit of adding new races if they are to keep up the current patch pace with all the new corresponding equipments.
For Viera to be compatible with Miqote equipment, they would have needed to position the ear wider, which would not be Viera.
I'm glad you at least added in your title that Viera won't be getting head gear either.
The reddit post was incredibly biased, it didn't even include Viera.
Things that wont show- Helms/ Glasses
Things that will show- Hats/ scarfs/ full head replacement stuff like Fat Chocobo head.
In return we get some next level customization with these 2, from bangs to ears to animal faces ranging from Lions to Wolves and horns and such.
Plus they will add things to the "will show" list as time goes.
I'm fine with this ... I mean, I just hope the Chocobo Mask you get from racing is in the head replacement list or at least is high on the list of things to work on cause that's a hard earned reward.
This small bit right here caused a chill to run down my spine for some reason.Quote:
Q: Are there NPC Vieras that wear glasses?
A: Even if they tried to make them, I think I would've stopped them. It leads to players complaining-
Q: Will the plump miqo'te in the trailer be playable? Will we be seeing plump versions of other races?
A: *laughs* There are many different body types in the world, and before, we couldn't represent all of them due to cost. But now, we're starting to look into different body types for races, starting with the plump miqo'te. You'll be seeing them in the MSQ, so please give us your honest feedback.
Does this mean that we might be getting more customization options in 6.0?
Poor dev team working on Sundays not spending quality time with their family, working fanfests to have to read posts like this.
And here I thought they wouldn't be releasing new races after Viera and Hrothgar because it's too stressful to make all the existing headgear for a new race.
Why don't they just give them the same treatment as Au Ra, where everything clips as if they didn't even have any horns or tails? It's the players decision if they can live with the clipping or not.
I mean I've seen Au Ra with the Carbuncle Jacket where the Carbuncle on the shoulder is INSIDE the horn, depending on the face they picked.
If that's ok for the devs then why don't just let Viera ears stick through the helmets like Miqo'te and Au Ra tails also stick through everything? Ever seen the Faerie Tale Princess Dress on them?
It's a weird choice, maybe makes sense for Hrothgar if some of the heads truly are beastly looking, but the Viera look like they have normal heads, just with big ears on top.

They've even got a bit of fluff around the base of the ears, which should help cover up that no holes have actually been made in your helmet and the ears are just clipping through.
As someone who has been playing a miqo for a majority of my time in game I'm fine with it. I hardly ever wear hats because the ear slots look funny and a few hair styles i like look bad with head gear a majority of the time anyway.
They can't be serious. All that talk about how hard it was to make the race, and it's literally nothing but a hyur with bunny ears that can't wear headgear.
Wow. What work? What part of this race was more taxing than any other when it required less?
They didn't give us digitigrade feet. Just slapped ears on the stock body and called it a day. Saw the work headgear would require and decided screw it.
This is ridiculous. Can't even wear glasses? Why the hell not? Miqote wear them while they float in midair. What's the problem here?
It doesn't help that we now have multiple interviews about this contradicting eachother. One say no full helmets, other says only full helmets. One says hats with clipping, other says no hats at all.
everything he's said at the fanfests and the interviews just say that they're modifying every headpiece to work for viera and hrothgar and it just won't be ready at launch.
Can see that part even if you just google translate it
friggain forums have transformed into hyperbole land.
Not sure if anyone has posted this already since its 11 pages long now, but Yoshi-P had this to say on the matter as well.

Q: With the two new races' unique heads, how will their headgear work?
A: It won't be displayed, because those face parts wouldn't work in FFXIV's system if headgear were involved. Even Viera ears would've had to be moved down to where Miqo'te ears are. It would've been meaningless if you couldn't go all-out creating characters from these new races, so we decided that helmets wouldn't be necessary. You can equip them, but they won't be displayed. However, things that replace the head are OK, like the snowman head, fat chocobo head, etc. No glasses. Basically, the default is that it won't be shown, and only things that replace the head are ok. We'll make more things compatible over time, bit by bit, but they won't be compatible at launch.
So the other was just a bad translation. *sigh* I hope making more stuff compatible post ShB launch isn't just another empty promise to wait years for like egi glamours.
Absolutely nothing wrong with this. Devs can put time into actual content.
I for one usually never wear any head gears anyway as on races like miqote, soon Viera and Hrothgars, hats would look silly as heck xD
When people dont get things exactly how they want, stop moaning about it and just suck it up as a personal loss and move on. I have seen XIV gotten features and such I really dislike, but I am not asking them to remove those to suit my wishes. I accept that they are there and is most likely to other players happiness :)
Not being able to see a piece of gear you've earned on your character when a hide helmet exists for everyone who doesn't want to see it isn't exactly a feature. And wanting SE to fix it isn't the same as me saying "I hate eureka, delete it."
That being said, I wonder if you can get a discount on the mogstation if you buy a set for your >half-race and it includes a helmet. You're not exactly getting everything in that packadge if you can't see it.
I can't wear glasses on my hrothgar?? That's really disappointing. I hope them saying they will make things more compatible as time goes on isn't just them blowing smoke.
I hope we can at least wear the job-specific equipment with them. I'd like to keep using my Red Mage hat when (if) I switch to Hrothgar.
I can maybe understand helmets, and even hats, but not eyewear, something I almost always use. I was considering fantasia to Viera if there was a head model I liked, but not anymore.
Yeah, helms I understand, but glasses? Seems like it would only need slight tweaking compared to helms.
So let me get this straight, in HW we got 3 jobs and 1 full complete race. During ARR leading up to it we got a full job as well.
Shadowbringers is giving us 2 jobs, 1/4 viera, 1/4 hrothgar and leading up to it we got 1/2 a job. Wut!?
What happened? What is going on at SE exactly? "It takes time to do it the way you want us to do it cuz we have to make every piece of gear work" Then freaking do it 0_0 who cares how long it takes. Don't have time to do 2 races well, just do one well, hell they cant even do 1 gender of 1 race work properly with the gear. Show me who the hell wanted this?? I actually don't really care about gender lock, it was an evil I was willing to live with. But not headgear?
People saying that "they dont have the ressources" or "they dont have the time" -_- as stated above, they somehow had it back in ARR and HW time and the game is arguably doing even better now than back then. So the only explanation, is either they are getting complacent, and aren't doing things to actually please the player base, at least in terms of quality (what the hell happened to the Yoshi-P that was willing to put quality above all else) OR the money generated by the game is being funneled away from it.
IN any case, whatever the reason, this is a shitshow and needs to be fixed.
No glasses, no bunny for me then /sigh oh well..I have Dancer at least
When they were improving ARR, it was a matter of life or death for them - now the situation is stable, so I suppose that the amount of their workers isn't as big as it was when they were fighting to survive and had to change the entire game. They have their limits and they have to make wise decisions to invest their resources as profitable as possible. It isn't difficult to notice that adding new races was their last minute idea - that's why they seem to be unfinished. Of course, FFXIV earns now probably more money than in the day of ARR's premiere, but they're SE's money and probably only a piece of them is spent on developing FFXIV. Making a game is a very difficult and complex process, it involves many different people and forces you to make decisions you sometimes don't want to make. And because we really don't know what is happening behind SE's door, we just need to be patient and wait for the results of the Yoshi's team work. Maybe now they need our support more than ever.
I imagine that for helmets to work, it'd take a ton of extra work to accommodate the ears. If only limited existing headgear work to start and then any new gear is made wit the new races in mind, I'd be fine with that.
Of course, I tend to only wear glamoured headpieces anyway because my character has pigtails and I hate any gear that cuts off my hair...so this headgear issue won't effect me much. As long as we get the effects of having it equipped, I don't care much about if I see it.
I am well aware of the woes of game development. However, the fact the amount of worker has diminished or the money isn't spent on the game should not be a burden for the players to bear. We are expecting a certain level of quality, quality that was provided to us in the past from the same team. If releasing finished and feature content is no longer a priority, it should be reflected in a lower monthly fee or lower expansion price. The company should always consider themselves in a situation of life or death, you can't drop the ball and then expect players to be fine with it. Calling it as it is, a sub par product (as per information provided to us) is, in a sense, doing them a service. We are using our voice as customers to tell them what we tolerate and what we don't.
Doing one race and doing it feature complete should have been a priority. If Viera wasn't possible then pick something else and explain to players why it wasn't possible. I guarantee you, no one wanted a thrown together race. If it was a last minute idea it was a terrible idea. I don't want a vague mention of "we'll make some head piece possible to be shown over time", I want a definite promise that this is a priority. As customer, we have become accustomed to accepting unfinished products being released. Two half assed races as a feature of an expansion to be completed later is no different than having a AAA title release with missing or unfinished features and having to accept that it'll be patched in later. This is unacceptable, and is quite frankly insulting to your customer base.
I can see them doing something pretty bad with glasses like they just wrap around there head and just look awkward
Actually it would be easier for the new races. All they had to do was cut the space/polygons around the ear areas and done. They could do an ear pocket for maybe hrothgar but like yoshi-p said, not enough resources so this is the best course of action. The rest is probably hairstyle adjustment. No different from any other races.
