Far from the worst installment in the series. Far from the best, but far from the worst.
The worst and best title of a series is completely opinion based and varies from person to person. Doesn't mean much when in comparison to other things that are good. Such as I think strawberry jelly is the best with peanut butter. And grape is the worst. But grape jelly is still good. Another pointless artical by IGN.
Edit: in case people don't understand the jelly analogy. The worst of a series of great things isn't necessarily a bad thing.

FFMQ was the awesome! *vampire-retreating-from-garlic-hiss*
I think FF7: Dirge of Cerberus would have been 100% better had they released the FPSMMO to the English side instead of killing it the day before US release of the game. I got the Japanese version of the game but I was not able to do much for the FPSMMO because of my only partial understanding of the language. It did think it would have made SE a ton of money had they released it in the states. And in that I agree it makes it the worst FF title.
I was looking at their comments over at IGN and a lot go back in forth on FFVIII, I played the Japanese version and almost beat it before US release. I didn't like the US release because some of the feel of the side characters were lost in translation. Namely Zell. He was using damn it almost every line of text in the Japanese version. the US release did have an upgraded draw system though that made the game easier.
I feel it is poor sport of IGN to slander this game. To imply it is the weakest and "...and one you should probably avoid." (taken from the title of the article) hurts us and this game. How can anyone judge this game when you have not played entirely through the game. The game isn't entirely released yet, even from a 1.0 standpoint. It would have been best for IGN to not mention 14 at all.
For me, FFXI will always be highly treasured for a number of reasons. The first being that I got to play my "own" character through the story, not some other character. Second, I also feel that the story itself was far more epic (I beat everything but WotG at 75 far before Abyssea) and larger then any other FF game has been. #3, my friends have seen me play it on my computer and say the game looks awesome. It for more or less is a PS2 game.
I actually hold high hopes for FFXIV to surpass FFXI in greatness.
"MMOs are long-term investments and perhaps once Square-Enix makes enough changes Final Fantasy XIV may live up to the brand's pedigree. Either way, Final Fantasy XIV remains a powerful lesson of how even the biggest names in gaming can crash and burn without the proper care. "
Fair enough.
This is all just opinion, I love all the FF games, numbered or no. I don't think one is necessarily better than any other. I do have favorites though (FFIX and FFX). But, that is just personal opinion.
Why do people think II was so bad?
(And we are talking about the actual FFII right?)
I actually enjoyed Mystic Quest quite a bit. Compared to other Final Fantasy instalments, it's certainly lacking, but I found it to have a simple charm that you don't see in many RPGs.
Who cares? do you let critics form all of your opinions for you? I don't. I like this game. I personally feel like FF9 was the worst FF ever.
In My opinion 13 is the worst of the series. I gave it a chance, everyone telling me it gets better at chapter 12, it doesn't.
The characters are forgettable, 3 of the main characters are only interesting. Lightning, Snow, and Sahz.
AI is stupid, *enemy is very susceptible to deprotect* Vanille/Hope spam fog...
Battle system, STUPID! I want full control of the party! Party Leader dies = game over, most the game is fought with two member parties. Summons, I never even used them unless the game forced me to use them.
The story line, ruined by the annoying Vanille's monologue. Tidus was better at it. I get better emotion from characters who don't even have voice acting. (Aerith dying, Vivi getting pissed at the 3rd Black Mage angel).
Comparing this too FFXIV, I feel better playing this game and buying a collectors edition than FFXIII at all.
Ysh'tola, Thalcred, and Papalymo are incredibly interesting characters. They rival the fighting prowess of the Black Wolf. Seeing how they are connected with the story is pretty cool. (Something Vanille, Hope, and Fang lacked. Minus the ending they almost had no purpose to the story)
Battle system is better to me than that. Players may make mistakes the first few times, but they'll learn making the experience that much better.
The story is incomplete, but no dumb ass whiny voice saying "We knew there was very little chance to succeed, but we had to keep moving on" every 15 minutes! The moon is possibly going to hit us, and we have to stop it!
The game is improving, where as FFXIII can't. FFXIII-2 not even gonna bother. The battle system is still the same. That's already a big enough problem for me. Still no full party control = stupid to me.
Whoever gave the review that 13 is better than 14... let me have your job. That's like giving DMC2 a better rating that DMC3 (Looks hatefully at X-play).
This isn't really any surprise, the launch of this game was terrible and, while things are miles better than they were back then, they're still not up to standards yet. I doubt IGN hopped on anytime recently to see if the game was suddenly awesome anyway.
As far as my personal opinions, it's hard for me to say. I love FFVII, VIII, X and XII especially, but FFIV-VI also hold a big place in my heart. If i had to pick a "worst EVAR", it'd probably be FFI-II, just because I was only like 5 when FFI came out and didn't have a chance to appreciate it in context, since I played it like 15 years later. Especially in the medium of games, it's hard to like an older title when your first time playing it is in modern times, since game mechanics have come such a long way.
I'd like to make a special mention about FFXIII. It had issues, to be sure, but I personally really liked the combat system for remaining fast paced and exciting no matter how many fights I went through with it. By the latter parts of some of the older FFs, especially the pre-PSX ones, I was bored to tears doing the grind or most fights except boss battles. I think FFXIII gets a lot more hate than it deserves, especially since I could clearly see that they were trying to keep the game fresh and relevant in a market that is quickly leaving old school JRPGs behind.
This is nearly an exact replica of a conversation here about a year ago after FFXIV was in similar catagories on the same list.
Oops, I did not double post and to prove it :

Bahahahahaha, Bender as Vincent. Genius!
I just hope they review it again when 2.0 comes out... And SE lives up to the hype of 2.0 and doesn't burn... GO GO YOSHI-P!!!
Worst FF ever? Clearly someone never played FF IX!
I kid, I kid, I just really hated Zidane
What ever.. ign can suck my #kupo#.. Swtor got awsome reviews and all my friends are leaving already.. media seems biased
The article seemed pretty fair to me. The FF brand has deteriorated a lot since the days that made it famous, and the botched launch of XIV showed that. Also...
Bender? As VINCENT? The quiet brooding character with the dark past? Someone was drunk when they made this. Cid is a much better choice.
Are people really angry over a *positive review* of XIV's current state?
"It has improved greatly since those days and the plan laid out by the development team for version 2.0 shows promise."
"MMOs are long-term investments and perhaps once Square-Enix makes enough changes Final Fantasy XIV may live up to the brand's pedigree."
What's to disagree with? I think it's more than reasonable and fair to say that the launch was bad, and it's a reminder of how even the biggest corporations like SE and the biggest franchises like FF can falter if not careful.
In all fairness, they say it has nothing to do with the story, but rather that the game was released in an incomplete form, and released in a horrible fashion no less. Thier issue seems to be that XIV is the worst because it shows how SE got complacent in game design over the years. They do seem to have a positive outlook for 2.0 however, showing that SE is learning from it's gaffes.
seems like a fair enough assessment, for IGN anyway.
The story of Final Fantasy VI, told elegantly from multiple perspectives, embodies just one of the many elements that make it great. An unparalleled battle system beats at the center of the experience, fueled by character-specific skills and Magicite that empowers each hero with spells of the player's choosing. Exchange Magicite for Paradigm and spells for abilities and what game do you get.... I'm starting to think people hate FF13 because it isn't FF6/7/5/w/e remake. Oh nostalgia, why must you be so nostalgic.
I know people who are around the same age as I was when I played my first Final Fantasy, and they say the game is the most amazing game ever. I've asked them to try the earlier games and "it sucks" according to them. I don't really care about reviews. The only useful review is if it breaks your system or if it has extreme glitches that make the game unplayable. When will people realize that your opinion on if the story is good or not is exactly that, your opinion?
Oh, and -1 for whiteknights.
What IGN has to say about FFXIV:Regardless of your opinion or IGN's opinion on what is the worst FF, everything they say about FFXIV is true. The game was horrible at launch and they even mention 2.0 and the better direction the game is taking. Theres no reason to hate IGN for that. Dont defend the game blindly.Quote:
