I'll probably be the only guy riding a Salamander if there was a mob mount...
I just hope SE doesn't do what other MMO devs have done when they've given out special things as "loyalty rewards"..
After a time, and enough complaining from people who felt "it was unfair that they were "punished" (yes, the the word punished has been used) for not starting the game when those who got the reward did.
In a number of those cases, the devs eventually caved and made them available to everyone, completely undermining the point and value of them being added in the first place.
According to Reinheart's translations (who himself says to not take his translations as 100% accurate), those mounts are not neccesarily the ones they are giving as a special mount. Or for that matter, if they are giving a special mount at all. Yoshi-P is asking for it, it's not a definite thing.
There I am fine with mob mounts - for specific class only !
but if everyone could ride mobs, it would be weird. Ok, here goes.... Beast tamer maybe ?
I voted no for mob mounts,
However... I would vote yes in the case taht mobs will be mount-able only for specific class - like Beast Tamer or something.
Edit. Sorry for double post, mistake.
Yoshi please give us Ifrit and Shiva mounts and I also want a cash shop to buy multicolored mohawks and afros from.
I can't see these mounts completely eclipsing Chocobos in any way so I don't see what the problem is. Especially if there's enough of a diversity of different types you wouldn't see people all riding around on the same thing, as some seem to have a problem with. Honestly you'll probably see them around a lot for a week or so, then everyone will go back to riding Chocobos outside of showing off their different mounts.
To me, it makes less sense that we can't ride them. There's no lore saying we can't throw a saddle on monsters that are big enough and use them as mounts. It doesn't conflict with the current story or lore at all. I honestly don't see what the problem is. I don't see why we can't have Chocobos AND other things, I mean aside from people wanting to control what others do because it "annoys" them.
Also since they've pretty much finished the system and put all that money/work into it, it's going to come whether you all like it or not.
These are aggressive beasts, with no established facilities to domesticate them. That alone should be lore enough. It is possible that when the apocalypse happens, we capture some tamed Amalj'aa drakes, and then use them as mounts.
Otherwise, like I said, they aren't domesticated animals. Ever try to ride a feral animal?
That's something they could easily add into the game though. Just as easily as they added materia into the game. Some guy who has mastered this technique pops up, teaches adventurers, fits in with the game now. Also I think there was some mention in, I think it was the last Pugilist class quest, of tamed beasts in Ishgard.
Haters gonna hate.
I want a dodo mount!
I think it'd be really cool to have a drake mount, with different colors to choose from! Also, a white chocobo!
Well if recent patch history is any indicator, you'll do what you need to get the mount, and 2 months later it will be obsolete, and you'll have to do something else for the new better mount, so 2 months later you can do something else for the new better mount, so 2 months later you can do something else for the new better mount.....
I can't disagree that Yoshi is VERY influenced by his WoW years, from the "whole server can join in and kill your mob for you" mechanic, to the "work your ass off for a new version of the item you just worked your ass off for" end game ad nauseum WoW update model, to the whole creature mount thing.....
It seems he really DOES think the playerbase at large is looking for another WoW clone with the FF name attatched to it.
I will get a Goobue and name him Snorlax.
Except for the whole One Character = One Job, Skill Tree, and loyalty polarity thing... the other 80% of the game. He's just trying to find a balance in what people enjoy in their MMOs and not have it undermine Final Fantasy. It's a difficult task and, imho, he's going about it gracefully; I'm glad I'm not the one it was given to - no matter what he does there'll be anger.
I'm fine with monster mounts. But I think it should be limited to a pet class like beastmaster and I'm sure the developer team has also thought about this.
Maybe while riding the monster that will be the beastmaster's main dps by mounting the monsters and giving them orders. If the beast master is knocked off the monster he loses control of it. The beastmaster will also have a limited amount of time when it possesses a monster.
Think People, because the whole "bawwwwwwwww it's turning into a wow clone" is getting old.
I'm getting kind of flabbergasted seeing all of the "This should only be for Beastmaster" posts. I dun get it - so you want the little "Hey, thanks for having faith in us." reward for staying through the Seventh Umbral Era to 2.0 to be something only one job that we don't have can use? Or that maybe they can reward us with a L50 BST? Or are you saying that you reject their offer and would prefer something else?
I, for one, think it's a profound gesture to break that chocobo tradition for a very small community and say, "In 5 years, when many players have come and gone, and the game is stable and all of this is so far behind us it is barely remembered, you - survivor of the calamity - will retain a mark left on the world. You will have learned to tame the un-tame-able."
This wouldn't be the first time a Final Fantasy characters power was exhibited through a powerful non-chocobo mount.
Literally the only thing that could make this a bad idea in the long term is if the community who DIDN'T STAY, who DIDN'T INVEST, who said it WASN'T WORTH IT decided that they wanted it too and bitched and bitched and SE said something OTHER than, "STFU, you didn't earn it. Learn to deal."
I'm more surprised at the fact that there are people who don't want this implemented. It's just like the response to jumping. If people don't like something they'll think of any excuse to have it cut from the game or to try and prevent it from being implemented just so they don't have to see other people with said thing.
If you don't like the new mounts then don't use them.
It's embarrassing how childish some members of this community can be. These threads come up every time a new addition to the game is announced, and then they disappear once said addition is implemented.
Honestly... I'm torn... which is surprising as i was all owww!!!! till i thought about it more..
I'm not hugely keen on mobs being used (especially ones that are aggressive at least), unless there is some sort of quest to save a young/raise one with it all..
It's going to look so crappy with loads of people standing around on different mobs i think..
As a Perk for Vets, maybe but then id like to see them linked to the GC's and areas they come from and limited but still.
I think i prefer everyone having chocobos, just seems right to me, an would look better.
Colours PonyBirds ftw really.. Give us enough armour and get the breeding minigame right and it'd be much better.
That's the main thing that bugs me about the BST argument. I don't think the people making that point read the interview where Yoshida laid out his ideas for BST - he basically said that he'd like to see a greater BOND between the BST and his pet - that he might even be considering a singular pet from beginning to end that you develop and expand. The BST in XIV will probably be quite different than that from XI -- and, if so, I wouldn't be surprised if THAT PET would be mountable, as well, which would already give BST a unique mount.
Exclusive Goobue mount for players who pay to play til 2.0 I am down for. Can still fight on the Chocobo only i'm assuming/speculating/opinion/not-a-facting.
Personally, as long as they are not faster than a chocobo then I don't mind. That includes flying mounts. Nothing should be faster than the chocobo!
Hoping for no flying mounts at all. Hovering like an Ahriman is ok, but no actual flying. Even Blizzard knows they made a mistake with flying, and have to put a random reason in every expansion that you can't fly until you hit the new cap. Save the hassle of random c***block, and keep us on the ground.
TALKING ABOUT TRADIONAL AND THEN THIS?
Everybody is talking about "traditional" if it comes to dragoon not having a wyvern pet to his side in TRADITIONAL Final Fantasys.
And what about traditional when it comes to mounts? THERE have'nt been ANY other mounts except the chocobo ever! in Final Fantasy History.
Ok well me as a lalafell i want to have a fluffy pinky unicorn please to ride on... oh well no... let me ride on a mechanic like the gnomes in WOW. woah... i never saw kind of these mounts in any other mmo! *sarcasm off* make a standard MMO out of FFXIV! and give them the fluffy mounts they want to have like in any other shit mmo.
smoked anything? ;OX

let the KITSCH BEGIN
i thought this have been final fantasy, not any other standard MMO implementing any fluffy mount everybody wants to have.
As a reward, I'd prefer something to augment the mount I already have. How about chocobo armor? For myself I'd like armor that's dark knight-ish fashion. There exists an evil (or disgruntled) moogle, why not let me make my chocobo look evil too? :)
Chocos in FFXI:

with that and different armor stuff ... but maybe that will be only an option for chocobo knights. who knows.
I want them, but I voted no. I feel Mob mounts will not fit in with the feel of the game and will destroy immersion.
Not being able to use those large creatures as mounts is destroying my immersion. Your argument doesn't really hold up well.
^THIS, especially the last bit. I just don't get how one could not want additional features that aren't hurting anything aside from maybe their own personal tastes. Guess what, the devs aren't here to appease a single person. Judging by the poll on the front page, more people want monster mounts and they've already done a vast majority of the work to get the system functional.
I'm just not getting this argument about how Final Fantasy mounts featuring Final Fantasy mobs are supposed to destroy immersion in a Final Fantasy game. People are all for big bulky Magitek mounts, but as soon as someone wants to ride something alive besides a Chocobo it's absurd and will somehow destroy their game experience?
It doesn't fit the Final Fantasy feel? How are you defining this? Final Fantasy games are all over the place with fantastical and crazy elements, but somehow riding a monster defies this? Too unrealistic? Good, this game needs more fantasy in it to make it interesting. Doesn't fit the lore? The lore for these mounts hasn't been written yet, and there's nothing in the current lore that directly contradicts the possibility of them existing.
Also there's the argument that because other MMOs have living mounts, that somehow means that FFXIV shouldn't be allowed to have them because they'd be too similar to said aforementioned MMOs. Really? Are we going to deprive FFXIV of interesting features on the sole grounds other MMOs have tried similar things? Might as well scrap any notions of introducing an AH, housing, or guilds so they don't destroy immersion by being too similar.
C'mon, the game needs exciting additions and fresh thinking more than ever if it's going to survive. Don't stifle the game's creativity and promote blandness by arguing against every interesting new idea that Yoshi comes up with. Let the game grow and stop trying to contain it in a little box of things that have already been established. Let's establish new stuff and make the game a bit more colorful.
There's only one way I could see this implemented that would make it all right with me.
First, that chocobos remain the fastest mount, and the primary mount for travel.
Second, that there be a wide variety of mounts, and the bigger/cooler ones be somewhat hard to obtain.
I'm against these cheesy mounts unless they are only being designed as the reward for staying until 2.0.
I'm not against mounts other than chocobos, magitek armors sound great... but I think it'd look tacky if these tamed wild monster mounts are made into an every day common item when this goes mainstream.
The argument against them is due to Yoshi pushing the game to feel more FINAL FANTASY, not just generic fantasy. If there's 2 things that make a game Final Fantasy, it's a guy named Cid, and Chocobos being the main (granted, not only) form of ground transportation. Magitech is also acceptable because it's an iconic thing from a previous game, and we already have established magitech in this world as well.
I understand wanting a huge variety of creatures to ride, but that doesn't make the game feel like Final Fantasy, it just makes it feel generic.
For example, in uldah's opening scene, in the parade they are controling a gobbue through magic so that it won't go berzerker on the people and they showcase it as this wild odd thing people will be amazed to look at... They fail to keep it under control and it trashes the place.
And now we are supposed to be okay with a bah-zillion players ridding them as mounts?
That's exactly what these example mounts represent.. A reward for players who played before 2.0.
So you're saying that FFXIV can't implement things that haven't been in previous Final Fantasy games because it won't be Final Fantasy enough? If SE followed that logic from the start we'd still be playing strictly the classes FF1 and moogles wouldn't exist. Everyone is too afraid to try new things. Sticking to the same old same old every FF game will just make the franchise stale. And really, SE has made each FF addition pretty distinct from its predecessors. Why shouldn't this game be?
Chocobos and airships will still be the primary mode of transportation. Chocobos aren't getting replaced here.
Even with that aside, these aren't random creatures from real life or other MMOs. These are Final Fantasy mobs. Ahriman? Goobbues? Are you trying to say a Final Fantasy mob isn't Final Fantasy enough for FFXIV?
One of the problems with referring to lore is that these mounts are coming in 2.0, AFTER this huge world-changing catastrophe. Who's to say this won't be a million times more plausible when that time comes? Yoshi knows the story and he came up with this idea. He's been doing a good job so far.
On the Subject of Mount's We have had and always Had "Chocobo" whats wrong with that? Why complicate matter with Different mounts as you may expect to find in WoW or Lord of the ring's. This is Final Fantasy. We have Chocobo's nothing more. There has been a time in one of Final Fantasy Console Game where we Mounted Magitech , Which is what Yoshi-P has planned or in mind to do Which I think would be interesting, But its Still Final Fantasy. Lets keep it that way and not complicate matter's ;-)
