What other MMO has done this, and why does SE think it's a good idea?

Not sure what you mean by completely different thing, the other person was talking about new players being left behind stuck on old low level content, the mercenary system is designed for the sole purpose of helping with low level content like dungeons along side the fact there is a lot of other elements which makes worrying about new players and old content less worry worthy.

I have no idea where you go that idea, it will be gated for all both prior and after launch of 3.0. There is no evidence it will be limited to anything related to pre-orders even in the links you provided. What we currently know is Ishgard is gained access through completion of the main quest, we know this quest will happen after completion of previous main story quest line related to Leviathan and Shiva which highly references Ishgard. We know the new jobs require being level 30+ in one of the current classes, we do not know where the new job quest lines will start but logically we do know it will start in a location that is safe for level 30 class characters to be.

I personally have not see evidence that Ishgard is just a safe bridge distance from Coerthas so I have no idea if that is the case or not but since we do know the quest itself required for unlocking the new zones is level 50+ then there would be no point putting a level 30 job starter NPC behind that locked content.

What makes more sense to me is you level your character or current class to 30, at that stage you can start the new jobs, that new job NPC quest line will need to start in a zone fitting for a level 30 character to be and we know you cannot gain access to the new expansion locations until after level 50 so logically that job NPC will be located outside of Ishgard. What will then probably happen is you will level that job from 30-50 going back and forth to that NPC to gain skills and more including continuing with MSQ as that job but after hit 50 and gained access to Ishgard that job NPC may tell you to go to Ishgard to finish your training where learn the skills between level 50-60. There may well be a guild relating to that job in Ishgard but it would be extremely unlikely you would start the job quest line there when we know the location will be gated behind being level 50+.

Story-driven.

I can say with Zilart, you need Rank 5. How do you get rank 5? Story missions. Don't finish story, then no Zilart or Dynamis.

Same with FFXIV. Don't do story, no progress in new areas.

Er, you sure about that? The only type of "mercenary" system I've heard SE talk about is one that helps players without FC airships get to the FC airship areas.

My major concern for gating expansion content behind story completion isn't necessarily how it affects Heavensward, but rather how it affects expansion #5 six or so years down the line.

Think about it this way:

FFXIV is a steady success and keeps releasing new content and new expansions as the years go on. Someone decides they want to pick the game up because a job in expansion 5 caught their eye. Now do they have to go through ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL the story content between 2.0 and 6.5 just to get to where the job they actually want to play lives? That's not entirely reasonable.

Now it's possible that job unlocks and things like that would be available in Realm Reborn zones, and that could be a way around this exact problem, but you still run into the problem of such a player needing probable years to catch up to where their friends are playing in the new stuff. Player turnover at that point would be a massive issue as new players can't replace old players quickly enough.

The Grand Company system that was spoken of in a live letter (iirc), where you take a squad squad of GC members into a dungeon to level them up. The other that I know of is the ability to go in there at you current level (not level or ilvl synced). This has NOT been confirmed though, they only said they are not ruling it out.

In the link I gave it doesn't say anywhere that it would extend beyond 3.0 either. Is schrodinger's cat dead or alive? Has someone from SE expicitly said it would? Can you provide a link to that? Everyone else is busy jumping to their own conclusions and basing it as fact, getting their own ideas on what may or may not happen. There isn't alot of information to go on at this point in time.

This is what is assumed to be the machinist icon in ishgard, it may or may not be the guild you are correct but it is highly likely. You are correct in stating that jobs dont have guilds but these jobs will also be different than any we have so i guess we will have to wait and see.

There is no evidence that either the current new jobs from the expansion or any future ones will be locked behind the level 50, 60 or future level caps and it is possible they will always be unlocked at level 30. As long as you buy the expansion and reach level 30+ you can unlock the new jobs, SE have said this. You only need to complete the level 50+ MSQ to unlock the expansion zones not the jobs.

New players will level from 1-30 like they have always done using a mix of main story and levels, dungeons, fates and such, unlock the new jobs and then continue leveling from 30-50 with MSQ, levels, fates and dungeons etc. Then at 50 will unlock Ishgard and level their new jobs or old ones from 50-60 using MSQ, leves, dungeons and such, with each expansion rinse and repeat to the new level caps. I fail to see how this is a bad thing, your still leveling from 1-50/60/70 cap the same way as before only at 30 you get a few new job options which can use for the rest of your leveling process.

I never said new jobs will start in the current starter cities of Ul'dah, Limsa or Gridania. I said new "characters" will continue to start in the current starter cities because SE said they are not adding a new starter city within the expansion which in itself makes sense given the level of the expansion zones is 50+ so it would make no sense to have a level 1 new character start there especially since SE said you have to unlock the new jobs after hitting level 30+ of which you would find pretty hard to level from 1-30 in zones meant for level 50+. I said new jobs can start anywhere much like the current bard job starts in a tree trunk outside of any city and it is far more likely the new jobs will start in the current 1-30 zones in this game not the level 50+ ones from the expansion.

I see a bridge, I will concede that is evidence there is a maybe bridge connected to Ishgard...I do not see any evidence that bridge does not connect to another zone in between the current Coerthas and the bridge itself though which is why I said I see no evidence you can simply cross a bridge and end up in Ishgard from the current Coerthas zone. I think it is possible there may well be a new expansion zone in between the current Coerthas zone and that bridge.

The way I see it, not even Yoshida is careless enough to mention the new Jobs being playable without a storyline lockout if there's much of a chance of it being proven otherwise.

Like others have said before, 2.55 story quests are level 50, and access to new jobs requires you to be level 30. It simply makes no sense to say "you have to be level 30 in a class to unlock this job... but wait, you need to be level 50 to even get to where that job npc is standing. But you still only need to be level 30 to unlock it."

(...Then again, on the other hand, they locked level 30 glamour prism recipes behind being level 50, too... Not just 'get one class to 50 to unlock glamour', but actually 'you have to be level 50 to read this book which contains level 30 recipes'. So... Meh. I guess it's possible, just... makes no sense.)

I think that we get zoned to the other end of the bridge instead of walking the whole bridge. So yes, it is a safe bridge distance away from Central Highlands ^^
But I also believe that the job NPCs will be outside in Central Highlands, not in Ishgard

The bridge begin behind the Gate of Judgement and I doubt they make a whole new zone with only the bridge in it ^^
It will be more like the bridge between La Noscea and Limsa Lominsa, where the players just skip the whole bridge by passing the zone line.

I'm actually glad its "locked behind story mode" When I played other MMO's i could just go anywhere and i missed out on a lot of content because of it and had no clue what was going on lore wise.

Can I just point out something I find interesting?

Yoshida said that in order to go into Ishgard we had to complete a storyline quest in 2.55, yes?

So... why are we assuming that said quest is at the END of the storyline? Couldn't such a storyline quest be interjected at any point?

Also, in FFXI, there were plenty of expansion areas that were gated by level. Aht Urghan, for example.

I wonder why you don't wanna finish the main quest, like you have something more important to do in the game (what can be more important than preparing for 3.0?well, that's up to you I guess)

You have like 3 more months before the expansion comes out, and you know that completing the storyline will be required to access Ishgard.
So you people that still need to do it, why don't you go to complete it already, instead of asking to remove the requirement?

Also, as others already pointed out, FFXI was FULL of quests that were needed to unlock new areas (rank 6 for dynamis, ZM12 for sky, CoP storyline for Sea access, and so on)

It's not even a long or hard achievement, many people already finished it, you can finish it too.
Don't always ask to remove any challenge/requirement in the game, even when it's lore related, this game is already easy enough.

I am interested to see how Gated Ishgard is, it makes sense why they would hold it back due to story cause the last few Main Story have involved Ishgard in some way as an imminent threat so needing to be aware of that to enter Ishgard does sound logical.

However I do find that perhaps the true motives behind this is to thwart RMT from advancing in on the market with speed,while they can take out RMT and slow them down, they just come back and currently in the game all you really need to do is have something at 50 to progress through it. They might of seen the effect of their simple change of "need to be past x Main story in order to do job quest" and decided to take it to the next extreme.

Those who enjoy the game in both story or progression will not mind having to complete all of 2.0-2.55 in the grand scheme of things it doesn't take that long in the sense that a steady pace of 2hrs a day and you can most likely complete all of 2.1-2.55 within the week if you only focus on the Main Story.Shorter for CS skippers of course but that's where the "gate" isn't such a big deal if you look at the "party instances" that take place after the last 8 man story it's the following:
Qarn Normal, Mog Fight, Levi Fight, Ramuh Fight, Snowcloak, Shiva Fight, Keeper of the Lake and another 8 man trial.

Other than all the talking and running around there aren't a lot of parts within the progression that slow you down making it quite easy to complete in perspective.

Is the story completely doable through duty finder? Does it include all high raid content as well? I dont mind the story requirements too much, and am sure I can catch up in time for Heavensward unless I need to find a good FC that just happens to be raiding and in need of my class.

P.S I think LotRO did something like this as well, IIRC.

It's actually pretty long for new people, no clue what you're talking about. Unless you're one of those people that just click through everything without reading it takes a considerable amount of time. Not to mention people don't usually have a whole day just to game, and also there is other stuff to do like dungeons, crafting, trying to make gil, etc. You have to remember that the main story at 50 has you doing duties, and unlocking more endgame content, so it's not like it's all "kill x amount of mobs" type of quests. It does take a while for those that are actually interested in taking the time to read the quests.

If it only takes you a couple hours... Your are obviously just face-rolling through it without paying attention.

The Binding Coil is right out, since it's entirely too hard for a majority of the player base. There is at the very least one event from CT involving the fate of a major villain from the Main Scenario that logically shouldn't be optional, but it remains to be seen whether or not that will affect future MS quests at all.

CT is already an all-but-mandatory gearing requirement to hit i90 for the latest MS trial (which was, for many, much harder than the World of Darkness). They may simply point players to that questline after Praetorium and say "you should finish this before completing the Main Scenario," with some sort of check before the end of the 2.55 quests. If they do, it's unlikely to have much of an impact on most players, since they have done it by now, and new players will probably have to do it before then anyway.

It wouldn't make sense to skip story and go directly to the after game content with yugiri and ishgardian au ra people.
Think of it as a bench mark... Like level 10 before you can switch class. Level 15 envoy quest to get airship and level 20 chocobo. This is just another prerequisite type of content.

Well it looks like I better catch up before June comes because I was too lazy to catch up with the main story after taking a break.

Can you possibly imagine within the CURRENT SYSTEM a new player doing the story mode and gearing up to continue through the 2.??. Again using the comment about gearing from Crystal tower in its current form is ludicrous for new players post 3.0.

Anything up to the end of Main scenario should probably be fine. I am seeing this as a weak expansion with level 50+ only content. So with no new pre50 content you would need to do MS for dungeon entrance, to get to 50. Also with new jobs they should be filled with people leveling jobs they never got around to and the new ones.

I am not sure why people at least vocal on these boards would want systems that would turn off new players. This should make the Relic players that think it should go on forever happy. This is inline with a model that 11 used to never entice new players to the game. It is not CoP questionable, but it might be pretty close. Unless ishgard is just a City/zone and the rest of the quests and content is available.

You're right in a way. The expansion should be better explained so new people don't think its a separate game.
There are plenty of things you can skip to get you to level 50.
Leveling your chocobo -skippable
Beast tribes- skippable
Relic weapon- definitely skippable

However the completionists will be having a really huge stress problem right about now.

Focus on one thing and you'll be bored with the rest of us in the tower grinds soon enough :)

Oh I should add... If you are DPs class get a healer or tank buddy asap.

Come June.. The que times that you think are bad now? Are going to become even worse...its inevidable with the majority wanting to try out machinist.

This was kinda my point.

People are also forgetting that there's a gear grind necessary to progress with the main story.

Keeper of the Lake and Chrysalis require what item level? Ok... and the quests award what gear? Hmm...

Also gearing through the CT raids post 3.0 is absurd for the simple fact that nobody will be doing them. You think the queue time for Labyrinth of the Ancients is bad NOW? Hoo boy. Check it out on July 1st and see what you think. At least the dungeons have a shot at being included in some kind of "Level 50 Roulette" or something to help new players out. The CT raids? Forget it.

There's going to need to be some serious overhauling to gear progression in a post 3.0 world to help speed new players through the 2.x storyline.

As for the relic? Doesn't matter. If someone wants to go back and build one for completion's sake, I'm sure that option will be open to them. But it isn't super important that it be made simple to do since it's unnecessary for post 3.0 progression.

Just my thoughts as a former hardcore player and now being more casual in my gaming life just from LIFE occurring in general.

As as hardcore player I would spend hours upon hours completing relics and whatever item I wanted in FFXI. I felt a great sense of accomplishment doing things solo and duo and very low man with a core group of good players in FFXI.

As a casual player I enjoy FFXIV all of the content is easily accessible in my honest opinion. I work a 40 hour a week job Monday through Friday and usually have stuff to do with my wife and kids on the weekend and I still had ample time to play and obtain gear from CT/Coil/Extreme Modes and do my daily roulette. *I stopped playing right before the newest Coil update and just recently came back*

I absolutely agree with the fact that you should beat the story mode to progress further into the game. What is the point in playing a game if you aren't going to well... "Play the game." I know this is a foreign concept to some of you maybe its just my age and that I grew up on games where I could not whine to a forum moderator that something was wrong. I think the absence of all the companies listening to what every little kid cried about made me a better player in general. If I want something and I can't do it.... I just get better til I can do it. I want nothing handed to me. Anything worth having isn't gonna be handed to you for free. This applies in games as well as in life, I mean no offense to anyone and I know everyone has different life issues but you cannot really expect a multi million dollar business to work around your college or work schedule its naive and incredibly rude to the entire player base that puts in the time to EARN their rewards.

Those level requirements only pertain to the hardmode dungeons and world of darkness.

I'm not sure how those gear sets will be incorporated. That's a ways off.. Since you will be starting over at level 1 again for any new class.
If you're skipping the new classes then yes you will most likely need ilvl 90 or better for the added dungeons.
New classes mean new gear sets just for those classes.
And don't forget..unlocking the level cap might mean you'll have to cap out before wearing your high level gear again. They really didn't specify the details on that.

I'm not sure what people are upset about or surprised about. So far main story progress has been more or less required. They put primals and eventually dungeons in it to make sure people completed it (since your roulettes are no longer accessible at that point). Most pre-50 dungeons unlock based on the story as well as a few other features (retainers, GC entrance/ mounts, inn use, CT, Coil, etc.). Reorganizing all of that such that new players can skip the story (which provides a lot of exp anyway) seems ridiculous, not to mention that fact that the story is important and pretty interesting.

It seems like they're setting up Heavensward to be more of a continuation of the current story anyway, so skipping it would be akin to starting a book in the middle. I'm not sure why anyone would even want that to be an option.

It makes sense from a JRPG stand point but less so from an MMO concept.

I really doubt it makes a great deal of difference, as long as they don't lock out the new classes from new players I see no reason to be concerned, that being said I can see why a new player may feel left out in partaking in the new content due to a lot of gated content.

I wonder if the problem is that people are failing to understand that MMOs have a pretty significant turnover rate. You need a constant stream of new players to offset the loss of those that leave. In an ideal situation you want the number of new players to be greater than those that leave but at the minimum it has to be 1:1 or you start to see a dip in subscriber numbers.

As an existing player it makes sense that the story continue but if I came in as a new player and someone told me I had to play through all of the old stuff that no one is doing before I can start the current stuff I'm going to be less inclined to even try the game out. I don't think most people would like to be stuck perpetually playing catch up which is what is bound to happen to newer players as the number of expansions increases.

In his interview with Famitsu at PAX East (one of the sections nobody thought was worth translating), Yoshida said he was expecting a lot of new players to join when the expansion hit, and because of that he planned this first expansion with the goal of having higher-level players helping new players through content. Before people cry to the heavens about gating, again, I'm pretty sure he just means there will be new incentives to go back to those old dungeons and trials. He also said nothing about this being the pattern for all future expansions.

At the very least, I think anyone going into the expansion expecting to never run a single piece of "old" content again is going to be seriously disappointed. Just because, no, precisely because it happened with other MMOs, you can expect them to be actively considering how to keep old stuff alive alongside the new.

This is very true, however I doubt it will be as bad as all that, this dev team have made a point of keeping old content revelent with roulettes so I doubt new players will have a problem completing old content.

The thought of having to do all that story content though makes me head spin, I don't envy new players, especially as much of it is running and teleporting around like a idiot on a fools mission.

I'm sure the roulettes will help but I feel the problem is as much about perception as it is about being able to get through the content.

I also think people forget how obnoxious it is to start the gear grind as a fresh 50 to reach all of those duty requirements. Hopefully they'll add some gear vendors like WoW did!

EDIT: Woah, hadn't noticed the edited OP. Sometimes this community can be downright disappointing.

As long as they make the rewards from those roulette pretty rewarding, people will still do the older dungeons and 2.0 main scenarios. A good way to revive all older contents is to add "new" crafting materials there, or revamping the reward from weekly Crystal Tower. They probably create another "book trials" on the 3.0 relic weapon that forces players to redo a lot of the older dungeons, AGAIN. Adding weekly tokens for completing X amount - insert older contents here - would ensure 2.0 contents still being played.

I doubt anyone is actually angry, if someone is actually angry about this then they need better emotional self control. Most people in this thread seem to have popped in to leave a message saying they agree with what SE is doing while some prefer it was done differently and none have posted anything angry in this thread about the subject itself. However what SE is doing is inline with what this game has done from the beginning and that is locking content and features behind story progression. Few people seem to have gone down the path of being a bit melodramatic about the impact of this story quest restriction but time will show that there is no need to worry about new players catching up or running older content. They should just wait and see how it turns out before they grab their torches and pitchforks.

I have had a new player friend join the game just today and they enjoy this sort of game aka one that is a heavily rich story driven MMO/game, so all this new story content they will have to go through would not in any way put them off, they like it more because of it. This game is not candy crush or flappy birds, it is a story driven MMO and as with most MMO's it is a heavy time sink...that time sink causing people to subscribe is what makes this game most of it's money. The fact that the time sink is quite so related to story progression instead of just generic grind of fates/dungeons and leves for new players/characters is a bonus for most people. In the end SE has from the offset gated content and features behind story progression in this game, they are merely continuing that tradition with the expansion of which myself and a lot of my friends and people who have posted in this thread appreciate.

There was nothing worng with the original post. It was poorly worded. I believe he was getting harassed on our server. Because none of the posts in this thread are very bad. I have seen some conversations in shout go south very fast when older players feel thier entitlement is being infringed upon. It would only take a couple to make a day miserable. I say if anyone sends a tell copy and paste links from urban dictionary in a reply :)
