This is the real world we are talking about, the director in this case was under direction from his superiors (His boss) to make the game totally different from XI. I'm paraphrasing this article you do need to read between the lines a bit but it's pretty obvious overall.

Interpret it however you like but it's pretty plain to me at least that he didn't get to turn the game into what he wanted.

Which makes me somewhat believe he wanted to make it something like XI. Although, he should have just laid down the law and prevented the whole debacle in the first place (if it was released completely done).

You would have to be pretty new to gaming to even consider playing a half finished product. Seriously.

The problem with that was the exec's above forced him to use Crystal tools for the engine because they used it to make a CGI preview of the world.
which for the most part was scrapped. Crystal Tools was fine for a single player game which it was made for, just didn't work well at all for an MMO.

@topic yes just for the story, I didn't get to play 1.0 either but I lurked youtube and some gaming forums when the game was still up, and was seriously considering subbing for at least a month until I realized I hesitated too long :/

I do agree that even as an outsider--a mere spectator--1.0 has more FF vibe than ARR, the design aesthetics was what got me interested initially, and I hope someday we'd experience similar textures in ARR. gameplay-wise I don't think I'm patient enough for such meditated combat. I longed for my other games when I learned I couldn't double-tap dodge my way during battles, but I can adapt :3

I wouldn't play 1.0 if a server was created for it even if we assume that the most glaring gameplay issues were fixed, those being the lag in every action you performed, be it in combat, crafting, or even purchasing an item. That said, there are many aspects of 1.0 that I do miss and wish were incorporated somehow into 2.0, one of them being the vast maps of 1.0, despite it's blatant copy pasta.

You could get lost in the zones and every so often there were nifty little landmarks you could come across, several that were actually incorporated into 2.0. Being that the game was released bare, a lot of the zones had no purpose but they were still there, full of tough enemies waiting to be given a use (i.e the area around Moggle Mog's fight entrance). 2.0's maps have a lot going on, sometimes too much as it feels like you're always a stone's throw away from civilization. If SE could combine the variety of 2.0's maps with the the vastness of 1.0, I'd be happy.

I still hope that we somehow see the return of a portion of the old Black Shroud, except as an actual maze, not just copy pasta pathways going up and down.

Only one thing I'd like to see return from 1.0 is the graphics for the gear. No, as I call it, stairs on texture, edges were smooth as butter.

I got to play part of the 1.0 beta years ago, but it lagged so horribly on minimum settings that I never picked it up due to it being beyond the capabilities of my gaming rig. And now that I have a good enough gaming rig to run 1.0, it would be nice to see what I missed.

People need to get it through their heads that 1.0 is not 1.23 is not 2.0. They are basically three different games. 1.23 is as different from 1.0 as 2.0 is from 1.23.

1.0 was hemorrhaging money because it was broken. They fixed it, made it an enjoyable game, and then destroyed it. It is also pretty hard to make money when they don't charge people for it. They went months of f2p service during the patches leading up to 2.0. If they had released 2.0 with the 1.23 mechanics on stable servers, they would have had a quality game that people would pay to play.

I never got to try 1.0 so I'd at least check it out (now that I have a computer that could run it).

1.23b yes, only if they opened up all those unused dungeons and areas like The Fesse or Hengr's Crucible, which would never happen anyway.

I would not go back, but I would take XI with ARR graphics in a heartbeat lol. Not that there are not things I would get annoyed with, but overall I prefer that type of game over what ARR is.

most certainly would. Much better game than what we have now IMO.

I would, if only because I became interested in FFXIV while 1.0 was thriving. I missed the sign-up cut off by a frustrating 2 days, so I've only dealt with 2.0's version of Eorzea.

They did a poll at the end of FFXIV 1.0's life. The majority did not want the servers to remain open. As for me, nah.

There already is a poll for this, it was called the open market.

I think folks are more attached to the memories they made in the past iteration of the game; the adventures, the friends, and whatnot.

Once you take off the nostalgia glasses, it was simply a bad game. Sure, there were a few quality gems of things here and there but all in all it was just not up to the job.

Nah, I wouldn't play 1.0 again.

as a 2.0 player who pre-orders the 1.0 ps3 version, i would go on to have a look of 1.0 but then return to balmung on 2.0 and play with friends

I just have to wonder...if 1.0 had better servers, better graphics optimization and endgame at launch...would we be here discussing this?

I loved 1.0 and I think it would be cool if the game was back up. They introduced a lot of patches that made the game very fun to play, and the battle system was much better than 2.0's imo. Don't flame me, just my opinion.

Yeah I probably would if it were pre-jobs. The thing I loved about 1.0 was the cross-classing system and how the focus was more on "i like this type of weapon but these types of abilities so i'll cross them over and play like this!"

I agree if they did something different to FFXI and got rid of the ps2 support and 360 support then moved them to next gen consoles and did little tuning, graphic enhancements changes or even a overhaul keeping the models then adding some more races even keeping the world as it is but updated with new things to do.

I probably be interested though SE needs to throw out a guide you can get lost in that game if you are gone too long.

THEY (SE) don't have to. If you Google it - you will find that the game is actually still up (although on a private server and not 100% complete - but it can be played/visited again.)

Correct.. a lot of people said they didn't want to log in because they would want to do things, but nothing they achieved would be saved. I know many of my friends and myself said the same thing. Logged in a bit but it was boring because I knew if I tried to actively go out and do things, it wouldn't matter and wouldn't reflect on my character. Because of SE doing that it was boring and pointless to be logged in.


Would I play, sure why not? I actually enjoyed 1.0 in the later months, and the community was very nice/helpful/supportive for the most part. :)

What I suggested a while back was they should do what ffxi did and make a past you could go into and try to fix the past or fight in the war. Same maps, same hard mobs, same old dungeons and primal fights etc... even the mobs that could 1 shot you because they were 70+ and you were 50... everything the same. It would be fun and allow 2.0 players to see what 1.0 was like, add a ton more story, zones and challenges and would be easy to make seeing they have all the old information~! :)

This would be actually kind of cool, they could even use the calamity and the damage done to the earth and ether to explain why the mobs where stronger back then, and how they got weakened, also, as an excuse to add stronger world mobs in the future as Eorzea heals itself.

It's a pity that may other of the great mechanics and aspects that were great from 1.0 won't come back, but that travel to the past would be really neat.

Everything I've seen of 1.0 looks super boring.

There was propably lots of good things in 1.0 but the main thing i do not want to see from it is the combat, slow menu based combat was reason i never pickedup XI nor would i have ever tryed XIV if 1.0 stayed as it was. That kind of gameplay fits for singleplayer RPG's and not for MMO's imo.

I'm impressed. FFXIV ARR has only been out for a year with no expansions, and already there's a desire for people to go back to the vanilla experience.

Absolutely hands down gimmie! Preferably before the combat changes in 1.23. I miss playing my ghetto red mage lancer.

I'd definitely give it a run. I'm interested in this private server mentioned earlier in the thread. I wonder if its something SE is ok with. But I'll admit I didn't get very far in 1.0 until yoshi-p and co started fixing the game up. I never quit I just kept taking short breaks, and playing other games. I do miss a lot of the animations. I think some of the animation in 2.0 could be a little bit slower. Things are so fast you just don't even care what it looks like. Except for maybe the LBs which surprisingly are slow so you can enjoy them. I think it would be cool to have slower animations in general, just scale the damage higher, and make sure there's no animation lock. If you have to move to get out of the way, then you still do damage it just simply interrupts the animation, kinda like interrupting a emotes. But again for OP I'd definitely would play it if SE brought it back online. It was kind of bad in the early days, but the last few patches it was a very enjoyable game. With very little "lag" issues. They even fixed the markets so you could search retainers instead of having to go ward to ward, retainer to retainer.

Also idk if people that claim they'd never go back, did you guys quit before the game ever got patched by Yoshi-p's team? If so you guys have no idea what you missed I'm afraid. After the first couple patches they made, you were salivating waiting to see what the next patch would bring. Because every patch they would make there were leaps and bounds in making the game much better then it was before. Hell bringing the choco-plague to a end finally after a year was a awesome start lol.
