Lag.
I win.
I don't want chocos in town because my PC already comes to a crawl in cities, even unpopulated ones. Horrible PC optimization + chocos in cities would just be wonderful.

Lol, just lol.
My PC is not set at too high of settings, nor do I encounter lag anywhere except cities. I still get lag in Jeuno in XI. Know why? Because SE freaking sucks at optimization for PCs. Amazing I can run other graphic-intensive programs and don't have a problem. Must be my PC though.
1 Choco won't kill me. The whole town on Chocos will kill every PC player.
He's going into troll mode because he's realizing it'd be stupid to have chocobs in cities with the current engine. It's his defense mechanism, just ignore it.
Anyways, lag is a serious problem and it's not just because of settings. It's because SE has reaaaaal bad optimization...memory leaks galore.
That would be pretty cool, I would actually prefer that, especially on mining leves or when delivering local leves or something.
But for them, they may not make things THAT easy for us, at first. You know how they tend to operate. Albeit, a good idea you've brought up, it doesn't really add to the idea of an instanced Chocobo Stable that I brought up, or the main topic of bringing the Chocobo into each city state. Elaborate on your idea a bit, I would like to hear more. :p
To be honest, I wouldn't mind having players walking their Chocobos in the city, as long as they stay on the main road. It would be kinda silly having them all fit through the door to the Adventurer's Guild. They'd all look like a box of Kentucky Fried Chocobo crammed inside there. LOL
But I can imagine players riding them throughout the main streets of Ul'dah and the main pathways of Gridania, and even the main, paved road of Limsa. Certain areas should be exlcusive to 5 main 5 races though, due to size and congestion issues.
Having your (personal) Chocobo, at a later date, would be neat to serve as both a portable retainer out in the field and should allow you to dismount and remount freely, as many times as you want when out exploring.
EDIT: Sorry about the above reply! I made a double post by accident!
i just wanna say no, but i know people will flame.
I want my weather in the city and the Chocobo stopped at the city entrance. Or at least up to the stables which is 1/15th the way inside town. I dont want to see giant birds running around town.
Uldah allows chocobos within their city limits. This can be seen in it's opening cutscene and others. I noticed chocobos walking the streets during a rank 20 pugilist cutscene. Allowing them in town (at least on the streets) once we are riding our own chocobos would be nice. At least as far as immersion goes.
I think the Chocobo rental should be split up in two ways:
First Way:
Single Chocobo to explore the unprotected lands within a time limit (Since it is a rental and all).
Second Way:
Chocobo carriage for the cities so that the wealthy do not have to walk and can smoke "Le Grand Cigar" that is made from a piece of the US Constitution. This would be nodal points that the user could pick and the carriage would drop them off there. Then make it a limit of 10-20 carriages to alleviate server load. I think people could wait to travel in style...
I think they should not be allowed in town and can demonstrate why very simply...
A picture is worth a thousand words.
Two is even better.
Replace all the mounts with Chocobos, and you get the idea.
No thanks.
Being able to ride mounts in the city in WoW made it feel like a city?
What city, exactly, have you been to that has people standing, walking, running around, blocking doorways, crowding walkways, etc. on large animals everywhere that would make it "immersive"? It's completely impractical.
And frankly, they're annoying as hell in cities in WoW. I would often deliberately go out of my way to less populated cities in that game just so I could actually see what I needed to interact with. Not being able to interact with in-game objects because there's several people on their biggest "look at me!!" mounts, completely burying them, is not immersive. It's annoying.
However "tame", they're large animals. They should be kept in stables outside the city or, perhaps, near the exit... but not in the city proper. It would add nothing to the game and would only give people one more way to be annoying, by blocking stairways, doorways, objects, NPCs, etc...
I could see it being useful for things like in parades (a la Ul'dah opening), or for "official" events where NPCs are riding them, etc... But for regular players? No way. You're asking for chaos there.
Emphatically: No chocobos in cities.
inb4 The 'bos are back in town ♫
The chocobos in Ul'dah's opening are for a parade. It's a special event. They're pulling carriages. In that capacity, they're beasts of burden, not mounts. Big difference.
You do not see normal NPC citizens, at any point, riding around on their chocobos in town at will. You don't see them being escorted around, ridden, etc. etc. You only see the handler standing with them at the stables.
It could just as well, and quite immersively be that the law in Ul'dah prohibits Chocobos being ridden or at all un-stabled or tethered in-town except for special events and, further, only by authorized individuals.
I guarantee you won't be able ride chocobos in towns, at least not with rentals. Mounts in a city is one thing, but mounts in buildings is another. Since we'll only be dealing with rentals at first, it wouldn't make sense to be able to ride around town, get to a building, and then get off and have to run back to the stables if you want another chocobo. So if you want to go from point A to point B in a town, you'll have to first make a detour to the chocobo stables to grab a chocobo, ride it to where you want to be, get off, it runs away, and...yay? Doesn't seem like the most elegant implementation.
Looks like riding chocobos in cities will become the new "jump"; all the same arguments are already coming out for it..
"More immersive!", "More freedom!", "running takes too long!" and so forth.
If SE were to lose their mind and allow riding mounts in the city, what would the next step be?
"They need to be able to fly! It's more immersive, allows more freedom and having to ride a chocobo through the city on foot takes too long! It's much faster to fly!"
And what after that...?
I swear, people are never satisfied.
I against everything involved with the word "limitation"
I think riding a chocobo in town is a fine idea, although you'd have to block access to the inner parts of buildings--that would be pushing it.
What if they were NPC's walking their Chocobos along the street? Carrying bags or pulling carriages?
I think I would enjoy that more than riding my own Chocobo through the streets.
Not so sure about access to riding chocobos in town, so much potential collateral damage! But I'd love to be able to walk alongside my bird in towns, like I am taking him for a walk lol Should only be able to go at a brisk walking pace so people only really do it for that sweet chocobo affection or to show it off to their friends or any random reason really.
I dont see why people say it chocobos in town would be faster, because if SE has any sense they will limit the speed, probably to 100%, which is our walking pace, therefore there is no reason except to lag us out and prevent everyone seeing what they are doing.
200% movement speed, which is probably what chocobos will be is just stupid in town, and if thats immersion then you are just as stupid, it would be the same as town speed limits for cars being 70 MPH (motorway speed, atleast in the UK)
HOLY HELL!!! /suicide (translation: I forgot how absolutely ridiculous and horrid it can be)
I'm not that worried.... Don't think they'll really allow them in towns, if you give it some though. Memory issues, especially for the PS3 version, once it's out. Otherwise they wouldn't bother with coply+paste scenery (which they said is to ease PS3 memory specifically) and characters & mobs vanishing from your screen at Japanese prime-time leve linking at Broken Water (which is in an open area even), stopping weather effects in towns etc.
I have to agree with this, in WoW, people get on their biggest dragon mount and park it right on the NPC that you need. it's annoying as hell. This doesn't add to immersion whatsoever. In fact, it detracts from it when you're FFUUUU'ing over not being able to turn in a quest, having to mount up and fly to another auctioneer, spend 20 seconds trying to gently move your mouse around in a game of hot and cold trying to find that one pixel your can click on that isn't being blocked by the mount.
You don't drive your car inside the mall from shop to shop... why would you ride a GIANT YELLOW BIRD in town? >.> just saying... it makes no sense
oh really? they rode horses on roads? i would have never guessed since i've never read a history book or anything in my life. people will be annoying with the birds, that's what they will do especially the younger kids who play who thinks it's funny.
Hmm I can picture Chocobos walking around Uldah and Gridania's main roads, just seems natural there for some reason. But I also can't picture chocobos wandering around Limsa O.o Don't know why, maybe because it seems stranger to see a giant bird standing on the edge of a bridge 100ft above the sea..
Whenever I enter a town, it should have to return to its humble sleeping quarters...
In my afro.
After I grow an afro.
Or you know the logical solution is to say that Chocobos are trained to not prance around in town, because those that do get turned into Beak glue.
Also that Chocobos are not idiots and refuse to run into cramped caves full of monsters with no way out.
Or you could assume it's "Bad programing" but people even "Walking in town" with chocobos would be tantenmount of horses jimmying around the sidewalk. There has to be a limitation to it somewhere. People would beat you senseless if you just strolled around the city with a horse where people are supposed to be walking!
The current cities don't have motorways or "Chocobo roads" to travel on. So lets say you want to stay immersed with your chocobo.
If you enter town with it you get a ticket from the gate guards or they just kill you for being an idiot. Either or.
