Mentors

Titel/status dosn't reflect or prove anything!

It may seems (most)Mentor = bad..
but That's because you're paying more attetion to them.
you're more conscious about it.

Start paying attetion to others too
and you will understad what i am saying.

I tend to find that battle mentors are competent and know what I expect them to know. For example, if I do bigger pulls they can normally handle it and if I do something that only experienced players would understand, they know exactly what I'm doing, whereas I might avoid it if it's a sprout because they obviously can barely understand basic telegraphs in many cases.

Sometimes that's the case with trade mentors but not always, it varies, because they are often sprouts in disguise or lack the same sort of experience that battle mentors have. So you'd have to be more specific about what type of mentor they were.

Also, do remember that battle mentors play a variety of classes/roles, sometimes just to challenge themselves. That being the case, it may challenge them so much due to unfamiliarity that they may mess up. This is really the case for any player too. Dungeon players are often just people playing/leveling alt classes they don't play regularly.

Naturally good and bad players distribute evenly in all stratum, but it is comical that someone wears the mentor crown while knowing very little about the game they've played so much of.

I usually have my mentor crown on when doing roulettes. I consistently give advice when people ask, and I tend to walk away with a commendation or two from each dungeon. Not everyone is terrible. Something something confirmation bias.

I think that's the best explanation I've seen. Look at the requirements: Complete role quests on Tank, Healer and DPS, complete 1000 dungeons/raids/trials and have 1500 commendations. The bar is very low. Nowhere does it say to be in the top 1% of your job. Nor does it say you have to complete savage in week 1.

When I hear mentors are degrading other players, I get disappointed. But, nowhere in the job description does it say they have to be a great player.

"Mentors are the worst" is something noobs say. I know lots of long time players with a full crown who don't remember how to play certain jobs, or know how certain systems work. They've just obtained the crown by playing for years. Some of these people are disabled, some have been gone for a long time and just returned, some are senior citizens, etc. I didn't see any specification as to which type of mentor was encountered in this run, and there's no details regarding the gear of tank or healer. So who knows who's to blame? For all we have been given, it's unclear who the real problem is. Blaming crowns cuz you had a bad experience and then got kicked just seems like you need to blow off some steam.

Why does it matter about the type of mentor, or gear? Trade mentors are often sprouts who didn't want to lose access to novice network chat. PvP mentors, don't need to explain that one. That, in addition to what I said earlier, are all various reasons that could be why you didn't get a kick ass healer who goes full ham on the pulls. Is your gear on par with that dungeon? What about the healer, and the DPS? Bardam's mettle is the gear check dungeon for SB, so if you try to w2w while lacking on gear, no matter if it is you or the party members, then efforts will fall short and wipes will happen. You need more than just aggro and heals to get through big pulls. If your dps hit like wetnoodles slapping a pillow, then you're gonna take a ton more damage and your healers resources will be spent along with yours. If you and the healer are undergeared, you'll be the one to melt. Seems that you didn't even look into the gear of anybody at all, and just went ham then got upset cuz you didn't win.

You gotta be attentive, and sometimes hitting the brakes and adapting is the best choice instead of fuming over a healer that didn't sync up with how you want to play the game. If you want better, focus on bettering yourself and your habits, your perspective, and be as helpful as you can to YOUR TEAM, not to your personal ideals.

Sorry if i seem like I'm shitting on you, it's not my intent. I'm just blunt, and offering you sound advice. Do what you will with it. Happy hunting o/

I figure I don't need the crown icon to be helpful, and MAN does it have a bad reputation. As a result, I only wear the mentor crown when forced to by Mentor Roulette. (I do that roulette because I actually enjoy teaching the ARR extremes when they turn up; I recognize this is probably a character flaw of some sort. Or masochism. One of the two. But wow is it great when you get to see a bunch of sprouts have mechanics click and clear a fight. ANYWAY.)

However, a couple of years ago I had an encounter where I helped three sprouts in a normal leveling roulette, and got told at the end "Thank you so much; you should really look into being a mentor, you were a huge help and that's what I had hoped mentors would be." And I realized that my reluctance to wear the crown probably only perpetuates that reputation. If all the folks who are actually helpful mentors generally only put the crown on when forced to by the game engine itself... then yeah, people are going to have the impression that the mentors are never the helpful folks.

It wasn't enough to make me start wearing the crown -- because, again, man does it have a bad rep -- but it did make me think that even the helpful/good mentors may be contributing to the existence of that Burger King crown meme, in a sense, simply by not representing themselves as mentors...

You don't need to be a great player to keep a tank alive for the typical pull of Bardam's mettle. That's asking for general competence, not savage-tier raiding. I swear you people bring out savage so much as a strawman it's so boring.

honestly, just move the achievement rewards out from the mentor achievements (put them elsewhere) and i'm sure we'll stop seeing... 'questionable' mentors as much as people do
