I think the fly in that ointment is that the person who gets the code can then sell it for gil in Limsa.

All the RP venues won't be pleased since many them have prize giveaways for things like costume contest and other events. Their big draw was the mounts and glams from the online store as prizes.

True, which is why I like the 'must be on friends list' part of it, and mailed directly as the item rather than a code.

And it won't stop the venues from doing it. It'll just cause a 72 hour delay in rewarding.

Makes me think this is going to actually drive RMT gil sales UP, since the venues won't have 'items' to give away instantly.. they'll just buy gil to giveaway instead.

I have bought more gift codes for friends than I have items for myself, I think.

That seems like a huge loss.

Yeah our FC had our Christmas Event and Glam Contest last year. We gave away 4 mounts gifted from the online store. This year it won't be the same. People have so much gil already, they want what is on the online store that gil doesn't buy, but they can't afford themselves and now as FC leader I can't do that this year.
