Gameplay for Bard can be interesting.
The Storyline pre-50 was written, as were all the base ARR jobs, with a bit less panache than later quests, writing against a deadline for a game that many thought was already dead, had something to do with it as well.
The reason Dark Knight and Machinist, for example, have what appear to be better storylines is that they had two years to put them together after the release of ARR. The storylines for jobs became much more straightforward in each subsequent expansion.
I wonder at times if the reasoning behind the Role quests in ShB (and, soon, in EW) is because it was really getting difficult to fit so many different storylines into each expansion and still keep them interesting. One can put way more effort into four storylines over a two year period than 18 of them.
