I'll take the foot in mouth for that.
There are few things that feel better than things going wrong and being able to make them go right.
I don't really get this attitude. Not calling you out specifically or anything Odinel, more making mention of the fact that it's not "just" Chadarnook. That fight wasn't exactly easy back in the day, even if you knew what you were doing and had a group who was on point. Any kind of survival success in a situation like that is worth noting. I just wish there were more of them in non-end game content. That might be a futile wish, as SE wants everyone to be able to do everything, and I don't begrudge them that. It just sucks when the best tank feelings you can get are limited to a very niche type of content. Here's hoping Bozja Southern Front and the other upcoming relic stuff puts some more emphasis back on that kind of thing in a less limited situation.
I recall a handful of arguments I got into because DPS refused to use Diversion and insisted I should just go into tank stance. A Black Mage of all jobs made a HUGE deal about it so I used him as a cooldown instead. :D
Some part of me misses that if only because it forced some responsibility on the DPS. At least if you let them die. But really, it was a hassle that's better off dead and buried.
Ehh. Depends on the fight. If you weren't purposely eating Temporary Current in E3S, you'd be sitting on CDs since he does so little damage. This tier you can eat the AoE Garuda does with your invuln since most tanks will hold it until Conflag. That means it'll sit there doing absolutely nothing otherwise. Basically, you just need to know when eating mechanics won't cause issues.
I only feel like I'm a DPS when I'm on WAR, DRK, and GNB... especially GNB.
PLD is relaxing, and it does what I want it to do, which is also my preferred tank. In regards to being a DPS, I'd just hop on a DPS class.
Shield Swipe's block procs and Low Blow's parry procs were a factor, but Blood Price and Shield Oath were the bigger offenders during StB. Tank stance MP/gauge generation wasn't fully reliable compared to MP/gauge generation in DpS stance.
Where as Paladin's Sword Oath generation was a flat 120 per minute as long as you stayed in auto-attack distance, Shield Oath generation varied with the number of Holy Spirit casts and the number of block procs. This was a fairly major factor as Sheltron blocks were a significant portion of the Paladin's MP recovery.
While Blood Price gave out a fixed minimum of 20 Blood over 15s every 40s, it gave out additional Blood and MP when ever the dark knight was hit while the buff was up. This caused blood Price to be very swingy MP and blood generation. It was great when tanking large mobs but sucked if a boss regularly stopped attacking to cast something or used mostly avoidable AoEs.
Even as far back as ARR, depending upon the amount of guaranteed damage a boss inflicted both Warriors and Paladins were both finishing bosses solo after the healers died. Heck, in multiple runs of Amaurot I've kept both DpS alive long enough for a kill after the healer died on both the first and final bosses.
From all the tanks we currently have, Paladin probably feels the most like a traditional tank with his kit.
@OP: nope, sorry all tanks focus on their dps rotation and occasionally put up a defensive cd to deal with a mechanic. Otherwise master your rotation and learn your uptime in fights.
ARR and Heavensward might be the only expansions where you felt like a "tank". Everything hit hard, especially in Gordias, and enmity control could mean the difference between a party member dying or the mob moving out of an aoe lb. Tanks still had a dps rotation and tried to pump out as much dmg as possible but def cd was heavily emphasized since the tanks had wildly varying kits during those times instead of the standardized rampart, short cd 20% mitigation, 2 min 30% mitigation and job exclusive mitigation we have now. Boss stuns/silence were also common place during those times and you needed to do it to stop some mechanics.
I fondly remember when Ridorana was released and I ended up MTing Famfrit. I hit Blood Price shortly after the center ewer spawned and starting pouring water all over the place. That thing must deal damage in 1s ticks, because all of a sudden MP just came flooding in. From that day forth, if I ever was a DRK for that raid I made sure to intentionally sit inside those aoes with BP on, soaking up all that delicious MP. DM and TBN made it so I didn't take any real damage, but the Dark Arts, my god the Dark Arts. Literally every possible GCD.
I miss those days.
