fate of emperor varis at the end

I'm not writing him off as dead just yet considering that we've seen people survive worse plus he could easily get some swift medical attention.

Though if he is, I'm hoping that Garlemald will be fully aware of Zenos being the perpetrator and that he doesn't somehow manage to shift the blame to Gaius/Estinien (Surely they'd have video surveillance in the imperial palace if their castrums scattered about regularly come equipped with it) for the sake of breeding even more animosity towards Eorzea.

The Empire pretty much hates Zenos as it is. It would take a miracle for him to convince the other high ranking officers - let alone the politicians - that he didn't murder his own father in cold blood. I doubt he'd try anyway. He's too much of a nutter to care about maintaining appearances. If anything, he'd probably go on a bloody rampage through the Empire if they even considered trying to stop him.

Varis is dead. Zenos has no interest in becoming emperor he said this himself all he cares about is the hunt so Garlemald will be plunged into a bloody civil war.

Well, they did say we'd be settling things with the Empire this expansion. Another civil war would provide just the opportunity the Eorzean Alliance and their pals in the Doman territories need to bring it down.

I do believe that Varis is death and hopefully will stay death.

Zenos is not known for keeping those alive that he wants death so I am quite sure that he did a blow that should have killed him. Varis suriving that and somehow making it out there somehow would just be strange.

There is also no hint ingame that he took part in the echo project and if he does not have the echo than he simply cant come back.

At the same time, they have the technology to become immortal. Who wouldn't want to be involved? What's stopping the artificial echo from being distributed to every high ranking member of the Empire?

Pretty sure they explained that the procedure had a high chance of killing whoever they're attempting to make Resonant when Zenos gave Fordola the offer... I imagine that alone would put off all high ranking members of the Empire, until the procedure if refined at least, but we killed its lead researcher so...

Even if the lead researcher is dead, it's still immortality. Everyone would be interested in learning all they can. I know the writers will probably try to pretend the immortality technology doesn't exist anymore, but logically it would be the Empire's greatest asset. Who would care about Black Rose if you had immortal leaders?

They don't know it causes immortality, though. Heck, we don't even know it does... One mad lad is not a good sample size, we don't even have enough Resonant to form a good sample size for this, we could pop Fordolas head off to see if she's immortal too, but that's about it. I'm incline to think other factors are at play with Zenos reviving, even if it is just the Resonant there is no saying it's 100% immortality, it's already 1% to even survive the procedure, could also be 1% to gain immortality from it.

Still, Garlemald in general had no idea Zenos even died at Ala Mhigo, and nobody even knew he survived until moments before Varis was cut down. I doubt anyone has any clue Project Resonant can grant immortality, it would only be seen as an artificial-Echo project to help combat Primals, with an incredibly low success rate. I doubt anyone in power remotely cares about the project at all, soldiers lives probably mean little to them so having them survive tempering or not matters little. The project probably died in Ala Mhigo because of that. Pretty sure it'll just remain a plot point to explain why Zenos is as powerful as he is, and nothing more.

Just how incompetent can the Empire be that they develop immortality, invincibility in combat and the ability for their race to manipulate aether AND NOT EVEN KNOW ABOUT IT?
This is bigger than the real life Manhattan Project and you can't just make nuclear weapons disappear by killing one researcher, that would be so stupid.
