How is this in any way far off from what Sentinel is now? I'll agree with you that getting the scroll was bad, but we don't buy/farm spells or abilities in this game.
EDIT: Also, the OP says GIVE IT TO BARD.

That other tank wasn't an option for 90% of content. Why couldn't the two types of tanks be equal, or at least as close to equal as possible, in all content?
Do you know why? It was because nobody wanted to level a Paladin, because nobody in exp parties cared to have a Paladin tank. Everyone wanted a Ninja, and it was directly reflected in the end-game population of tanks.Quote:
You do realize how hard it was to find a single Paladin when you needed one?
No, /NIN negated the other subs because Utsusemi was so far above the other abilities that other subs provided, that you would be f**king stupid not to take it. It gave you no-brainer, easy-mode defenses for tanks and exponentially higher damage for DPS classes. There was no other sub that you could use, because they were all s**t by comparison.Quote:
Perhaps it wasn't Utsusemi alone that negated the usefulness of other subs - rather, the uselessness of said subs.
Just because Sentinel now is another cookie-cutter skill that everyone has to have does not mean that FFXI's Utsusemi and NIN were any good for the game. It means Sentinel should probably be nerfed, and fights retuned so that they don't all depend on one single ability from one class.
PLD was the go-to tank for linkshells that didn't have a NIN tank that was well geared, and for the very few NMs that hit like a Mack truck and required a tank with high HP and defense.
And even for those, PLD/NIN was an exceedingly common tank. FFXI's NIN job saw more love and overpowered skills than any class in any MMO I've played.
Blood tanking or evasion tanking. The situation/enemy decided.
Possibly nobody wanted to level Paladin, and equally as possible that many had already done so.
Was Paladin not even easier to tank with? Flash > Provoke? Sounds pretty technical!
