I think that at this point you might as well just change class. It is extremely early into the expansion which means no major changes are coming any time soon. Things that change the gameplay of a class or change properties of abilities that aren't purely numerical are quite unlikely. MNK is also in quite a good spot when it comes to the class doing its job despite all of the complaints people have so as much as it sucks, there isn't much they can actually do for a while. Coming from DRG, I personally adore playing MNK. It feels really satisfying and I feel like I am rewarded for my effort. The kicker being that I like the way DRG plays but it is just shit quite frankly. People are already excluding the class from joining PFs and statics (pseudo try-hards most likely) and despite being a 99th percentile DRG, for most other jobs it is like around their 80th.

Stormblood was the chance for that overhaul. There isn't a chance at any real change for 2 more years now.

SB monk gets more disappointing the more I think about it. I don't care that monk is "meta" now because DRG got nerfed into the ground, I just want monk to be fun again.

That's not any consolation, it's an indictment of the Dev Team's complete failure to address useless actions on Monk during the action rework. Most of the changes Monk got didn't make actions useful, they were more like appeals toward the actions being useful while fixing none of the underlying problems. One Ilm Punch is now a stun, but it's infeasible to use because of how forms work, Tornado Kick had its recast reduced but it still has such a high use cost it's a loss to use, and Tackle Mastery and the Riddles try to incentivize not using Fists of Fire but fail because Monk is a DPS job so why leave Fire ever.

And frankly I doubt the devs will be held to task for this, the Monk player base is one of the smaller ones in the game so we can't make enough noise for them to care.

That's why I said I don't want more damage (Save for an AE Chakra dump). We hit hard, no doubt, but despite that, we just feel... rough, of that makes sense. At least looking at our whole kit. We ain't as smooth as we used to be (Less dots to Max out other dot ticks), and our new skills also either feel off or are just a little janky to use (I hate using Wind tackle by accident) with RoF slowing is down and praying for good RNG for our slowest ability to proc.

I did actually already jump ship to Samurai, i think i stated it in another thread. My posts are not to discourage people from playing the job or anything or the sort. But more to show that we do have problems and lost our job identity in the shift to 4.0. I still love monk, but i disagree with the direction they've taken it in gameplay wise. Monk is by no means bad by numbers, when I do play it i regularly get 95+% but from my experience it is in no way as fun at it used to be and the slowdown from RoF is a contributing factor to this. And brotherhood is not worth me changing back from Samurai to monk. for my composition it's roughly a 0.87~ raid dps gain for me to go Monk instead of samurai. but that still doesn't work out better than what I can pull on Samurai. The ONLY way Monk will ever balance things out with it's utility is if the job doesn't suffer so brutally from phase changes and Brotherhood affects the whole raid, not just physical. In a fight with no downtime I 100% believe that a Monk and it's utility will outdo a samurai. As it should do. But any fight a monk is forced to lose GL3 The samurai's pure dps will out do it and the utility it brought. In casual content Monk is perfectly fine. But my experiences are strictly from raid/extreme perspectives because that's where real balance and viability should come in.


I don't expect any groundbreaking changes to monk. But things like the slowdown from Riddle of Fire being reduced to either 5% instead of 15% and the damage scaled back to 20% instead of 30% would at least help a little. I mean ideally i don't want any slowdown but if i have to compromise I'd rather have less damage % buff and remain faster. than have more damage and be even slower because Monk doesn't feel good being so slow. that's just an example and something they could do with numbers. Brotherhood is another thing they can easily change to affec the whole raid. I'm not asking for an overhaul but I am asking for our job identity back and to not be the clunky mess it feels like right now.

To summarize:
Monk's DPS is perfectly fine, but it's utility needs to not be so restricting to physical. RoF needs %changes on the speed and damage to balance things out to not make us so slow. PB needs to have a reduced CD 90s maybe or RoE should instantly refresh GL timer upon use. Those are the quick fixes i'd make to monk as of right now just to make it play better.

Meikyo while similar is not a 1:1 comparison to PB. I would argue that if PB were on the same CD as Meikyo, it would actually be better.

the main comparison to meikyo shisui was that it directly benefits hagakure usage giving it a straight 90 kenki when both used together because they both align so well.

Whereas Perfect balance is so lengthy that we can't realistically use it to benefit Tornado Kick because generally mechanics force us to lose GL3. It was more about the correlation between the two but meikyo shisui has the added synergy with hagakure

I don't see how, as a burst cooldown Perfect Balance is kinda weak even when you take all Self buffs into account. Two Crit Bootshines at approximately 340 potency and a Tornado Kick at 531 while the remaining three GCDs get Monk Back up to speed isn't that strong. Compare Meikyo which is two 484 potency actions, a 411 potency action and a 1306 potency Iaijutsu with Kaiten. The reason Monk Needs PB's recast reduced isn't Meikyo, it's Blood of the Dragon and Enochian which are both on 30 second recasts.

PB's cooldown being so massive serves no point but to arbitrarily bar monk from getting up to speed when the boss Jumps at this point.

Only level 61 right now, but I can say that the job is now the most boring its ever been. The abilities which have been culled are the wrong ones. Why Fracture and ToD when they didn't pull One-Ilm-Punch? I even made a post requesting this prior to the SB release that they, for the most part, don't mess too much with MNKs abilities as the class has played very smoothly and perfectly for a very long while now that it needed very few changes to be put in a proper position. IDK, maybe I'm just salty right now but I'm really unhappy playing MNK, really unhappy playing SCH, and can't find a class that works well with me like those two did pre-SB.
