Why are summoners so neglected?

Unless something changed drastically since I quit halfway through WotG, I don't think XI's SMN would be very well received here. XI's SMN was treated as a glorified healer that only brought out Avatars just long enough to cast a Pact before dismissing them again. Though now that I think about it, that's how the Summoner is typically portrayed throughout most of its different iterations in other Final Fantasy games: occasionally bringing out a summon for a big, expensive spell (that often times had RNG elements if you weren't using it with specific items or abilities) and otherwise they spent the rest of their time acting as support.

No they are no more privileged then any other job. Sorry to burst your bubble.

While I don't agree as a whole it was "neglected" but more of, just sorta strewn everywhere rather then trying to be completely cohesive. In no way do I think it's anymore privileged over any other job.

But you're more then welcome to keeping thinking that though, for some unexplained reason.

No other job(except MNK kettles and emperor fists which aren't even features) has a bonus, exclusive feature attached to them out of all jobs in the game. Not even SCH. How do you not see this????

In all fairness, Magic-Mal has a point. Plenty of people have been asking for a glamour system for the various pet classes and whilst it certainly took a long time for SMN to get their version despite it being intended earlier it is still more than what MCH and SCH have. This also isn't FFXI, so SMN is completely different to SMN in that particular game. Much like SAM is going to be different to how SAM was handled in FFXI. I believe this is the case with NIN as well?

I'm not comparing Summoner here to Summoner in FFXI. But I still personally think Summoner as a whole just wasn't that cohesive here period, just because it felt like they were going in one direction one minute, then BAM go into another one next expansion. Just how I feel about that though.

The only reason SMN's even got the glamour system to begin with though, was because they finally came out and said "We're sorry, but we can't/won't do new Egi's was an actual job skill/spell." So that's what they ended up giving SMN's to try and appease those who were miffed over no new Summons for Summoner. Which makes sense.

Why did the OP proceed to make a post quoting a line in an interview that addressed the "concern"? It was literally the first sentence. And even the last one. just because you don't like the answer doesn't mean you didn't get one...

You guys can argue until you're all blue in the face, but HW took a different direction than ARR. just like other classes did. For better or for worse, it happened. Like it or not, but SMN is probably pretty solidified for Stormblood too, at this point. (obviously without patches to change things at a later date)


Let's maybe, I don't know, see what Stormblood does to SMN? I mean... you guys with either get...

A) more summons
B) new glamours
C) a continuation of dreadwurm stance (be it more bahamut stuff or another primal)
D) another direction of SMN completely
and thats IN ADDITION to the abilities everyone else is getting, too


What's -actually- the problem here? Last I was ever told, SMN was pretty beloved in raid slots right now. I always hear about how hard they hit and the utility they bring. Sounds very neglected, yes.

Please don't mistake direction for neglect. Let's see where the storm blows them. it's in 3 months. Please, try to hold your horses. If Stromblood takes them in a wholly new direction out of left field that is nearly unanimously disliked, then perhaps there would be more to chew on here.

I really think they are just clueless when it comes to mmos. They are so behind the times and so self limiting. i agree, i wanted to see open world content for once in 4.0, but looks like Yoshi won't even consider it in his recent interview, because he says, people want to go duty finder and wait exactly 20 minute to go to the instance from their fc house and dont wana form a party to go out to the open world to pop a NM or hunt something. but guess what, why don't u give it a try and see if we like it or not. why don't we have hybrid content, some instanced and some open world.

The devs made XIV's SMN the way it is because they didn't want it to have the same issue SMN had in XI, where the SMN's pets did everything and if that pet is defeated, the SMN was at a loss ad had to rely on their subjob. They also felt controlling pets would be too hard for "less-hardcore" players... >x>

On the patch that implemented the carbuncle glamour option, it was the very first thing I unlocked when the servers came back online. In all honesty? The quest explanation was... disappointing. Here I was hoping that someone found a way for us to summon more than Ifrit-egi, Garuda-egi, and Titan-egi, but nope. When we call "Carbuncle" as a Summoner, it isn't really Carbuncle. It's still one of the same three egi that we're always had, just with a different "coat of paint." That means if we ever get to summon the egi form of Leviathan, Ramuh, and Shiva we won't be seeing them using associated water, lightning, and ice elements for their attacks. This was really the bare minimum solution they could have come up with.

Also this is something I've mentioned elsewhere, but as cool as it was to watch Summoner unleash Deathflare (Akh Morn) I couldn't help but notice that Garuda-egi didn't need to be in that video. I think what they did for Summoner between levels 50 and 60 was a step in the right direction, but I've just been waiting and praying that when we finally see the new abilities for Summoner at level 70 we will see improvements made to the egi experience.
