Context is key. The post I was responding to said they didn't agree with the information being stored locally. If it weren't stored locally in some fashion, the server would need to do regular checks to make sure they were current, which would increase the server load. That's not the same thing as being able to store backups on the server (like you could do in FFXI), as the server would only need to check the backups when specifically asked to.
I always forget that option's there, though I'm not sure what all it saves. Does it keep your gearsets, too? It doesn't mention those. Back when I had need of something like this, I went through and copied my character file and put it on a thumb drive, which preserves pretty much everything.
Yes, if they were only on the server and not locally. But if they were kept client-side while playing (cache memory style, I guess), and only updated to and from the server when logging out or in, it wouldn't tax server load that much, and it wouldn't matter when playing. It would potentially mean not having to suffer quite as much from corrupted character data (unless it would mean the update to server got corrupted as well). And, it would potentially not matter if you logged in from console or PC, as long as you used the same control system (keyboard+mouse or controller) on both.
And it was the "keep it local while playing, just update to/from server on login/logout" that Waliel suggested =) Perhaps not the perfect response to the context your response was in, but it was a suggestion of a compromise of the two.
That's actually what I was referring to, yes. You can settings over that way. But to do that with your hotbars and gearsets isn't very user friendly because the game doesn't do anything to identify which character file is which—they're identified by a string of numbers, and if you have multiple characters, it can take a bit of sleuthing to figure out which is which.
Compromise is fine. It was their flippant tone ("What am I reading?") that I took issue with. There was no need for that.
Solution to transfer between clients without hurting server load. Allow an export / import settings option that saves your settings/ui/macros etc to the server that can be imported on the other machine.
EDIT: read a few more posts and saw the backup thing in the launcher. I didn't even realize that was there. That's good, but I think it would be better to have this option in-game, save to the server and be usable on ps4/ps3/pc.
Posting in support of the option to have our UI settings, Hotbar settings, Gearsets, etc. saved server side so that we can simply download them in the event that we would like to play on a different PC/Console.
Not exactly the same but,
