Man, 80C is too high. You are slowly killing your GPU. You'd better set your graphics fan(s) to higher speed. I know it's a lot of noise, but unless you are prepared to buy a new graphics card every year, you'd better get used to it. I doubt any warranty will cover breaking of overheat.

It is made so that it heats less and is cooled better, therefore it will work longer. With my old GTX260 I always had to set fan on max to keep the GPU close to 60C.

80 degrees actually isn't that bad for a GTX 470. If it goes above 90 I would look into getting another fan.

with the error message that was posted I wouldn't be suprised if this was a hardware problem having nothing at all to do with FFXIV

that's 80C not 80F, 80C. 80C = 176 F

at 176 degrees your video card won't last long

An old generation card, yeah.

New cards can handle temps in excess of 90 degrees Celsius without breaking a sweat. Even some of the 200 series Nvidia cards can safely run above 90.

At the bottom of this page you'll see the max operating temperature for the GTX 470, which is 105 degrees Celsius. http://www.nvidia.com/object/product...tx_470_us.html

I'll say it again.. a GTX 470 running at 80 degrees Celsius under full load will have no negative consequences. It's lifespan will not be shortened to any noticeable degree.

ok, i felt for trying something new yesterday, i set up my settings in config menu, i really loved the graphics, so i didnt set them down again, no lag or anything :P Well, still havent had the black screen (two days, kinda much playing). Also, i completely turned of sleep mode, it might have helped actually, thanks ^^

for those wondering, even though this IS a laptop, it is also a gaming computer, even though the specs arent that great, fffxiv is running smooth. (Btw, was 64c* degrees last time the error popped up, so it wasnt overheating, as that happens at 120C*)

Of course, if the screen goes black again, il post here again, but before that, thanks for all help ^^ I might try some of the other stuff said here to, just to be certain it wont happen again :P

Man, Maximum GPU Temperature (in C) 105 C means that it will automatically halt its operation at that temperature, not that it is good to operate up to that temperature. On my old computer GeForce 6600GT had maximum GPU temperature around 120C. After I overclocked it to play Oblivion, it started to heat to those 80C. After several months it started to heat even more. After a year it started to heat to its max on every game, not only Oblivion. On heating to max it always halted, resulting in a freeze and then a blue screen. I had to purchase a new graphics card.
But it's your card, so it is for you to decide how to treat it.


Medura, good luck killing your so called "gaming" PC. I looked carefully at the specs you posted. It is anything but gaming. I have no idea how that graphics card of yours can run this game smoothly, unless you turn your settings below average.
Even for my GTX570 to run it smoothly I have to choose: either I want 16xQ CSAA or general drawing quality set on 10, but not both. For 16xQ CSAA I have to set general drawing quality on 8 to have no lags, above that I'll have to turn anti-aliasing off completely, or else it lags. Even with general drawing quality set to 9 the game doesn't run completely smooth with anti-aliasing.
