Oh. That sound. I disabled that together with the music. You can disable all the system sounds in one of the menus.
That
"KTSCHAKLONKKKKK!" drove me nuts after the first time I slew a marmot.

I study music too, extra-curricularly, so I guess it takes a certain type of person to dislike these things as intensely as we do. Quite frankly I'm amazed there are even those among us who would let this glaring flaw slide, but I suppose they are not left-hemisphere types.
Anyhow, considering that this sound effect is such a recurring element of the battle system, which incidentally, is the only thing in the game getting an overhaul right now, it seems both prudent and convenient to fix the sound effects now whilst they are still fixing the system to which the sound effects belong. After all, SE has consistently shown they are incapable of multi-tasking, so let's make the most of their fixation on this one task by suggesting fixes for it.
And just because a thread suggests a positive change for the game (even while doing so in a negative way) doesn't mean it's a troll thread.
And as to Gramul's suggestion of letting these faults remain in the game just to preserve the game's image... well to that I say WTF?
I mean, let's put aside the fact that SE's image has been dragged through the mud so much recently that there is little "image" left to preserve, and let's instead turn our attention to the fact that SE has given us so many minor fixes already, we might as well capitalise on this and get one small fix that people will actually enjoy, for once in our lives.
Like someone has stated you can turn the system sounds off. I do because it does annoy me ever since...
I agree it is terrible. I usually play with sound off, but one day I turned it on and found my ears being assaulted. It sounds much more like a "cancel" sound than an accept one.
Um, really? You're complaining about the sound chime in a menu now?
After years worth of memory selections in final fantasy games?
I really couldn't care less about it, this is not an improvement.
Bring back the calls so i can make a provoke macro and spam it!!

You know:

I'd take that octave-y selection sound anyday over what we've got now.
lol. Yeah I might actually go there.
I was a music major for a while too, so you might be on to something there. I think she thought for a second this was one of my hidden sarcasm threads. lol. I read the OP again in that light and I can see why. If this sound wasn't so amazingly disturbing to my ears it would have been a brilliant troll thread. lol.
Seriously? What file is it and what did you swap it out with? I might have to go there. Also, were you on the beta forums? There was somebody called Premium Neptune on there.
Assaulted, lol. That's the perfect analogy for FFXIV. You choose an action that's supposed to be affirming, and instead you get a "cancel" sound effect. lol.
call5? lol that was the worst one. I can still here it in my head. If there was any critical party content I would have to agree with you here!
I would be so down with that! Bring that on devs!!!
