Seriously, if you're new to a raid and clearly haven't read or watched any guides on how it works - DON'T TRY TO MAIN TANK. I just got out of a Void Ark where the tank of my party seemed convinced that it was their job to pick up EVERYTHING regardless of mechanics. The morbol wind tunnel? In spite of someone clearly marking where each alliance needed to go, he ran away and tried to gather up /EVERYTHING/ in the room - leave myself and a DPS to mop up our party's responsibilities. Not once did he ever come into healing range either, so he was clearly still fighting for aggro on the mobs he had no business tanking. Sawtooth? He fought for aggro on Sawtooth and then tanked him SIDEWAYS whilst trying to also tank the tree, inevitably wiping because /hey/ he didn't seem to get that once the tree started glowing he needed to wait for the right moment to hide behind it. The rest of the trash mobs went about as well, with him trying to gather everything up in the middle of each arena, even the snakes that the last boss splits into. At some point before the second to last boss another tank got fed up and started MTing, but it was honestly astonishing watching the bosses constantly rubber banding between the two tanks as this one refused to yield.

If you don't know a fight, tell people. If you're not capable of dodging mechanics while MTing and someone else steps up, let them do it. I know it's old content, but seriously just watch a quick video or ASK. I won't say my own performance was stellar, but by the end I was just laughing out of sheer disbelief. Especially since half the raid kept on dying to simple and very telegraphed mechanics. I can't even imagine how bad Dun Scaith is right now...

Got a recent one.

Went into Hullbreaker Island (normal), tank is wearing mostly ilv 50 stuff. Search says he's lv 66 so, I rolled with it. It's just Hullbreaker, so no biggie. Gets to the first group and ONLY throws tomahawks at one enemy. The entire time. I ask what he's doing and get no response. Second groups goes basically the same, though he starts spamming heavy swing on a single target occasionally as well. No stances up or anything, just tomahawk and heavy swing. After this group I realized he was a Marauder. Not a Warrior. A Marauder... a lv 66 Marauder. That was the only class he had leveled. We wiped on the next group since he had control of nothing and I vote kicked him. Got a new tank surprisingly quickly. Finished fine after that.

I pray that was a troll, because I cannot even imagine what it would take to get there otherwise.

This morning I decided to run Lakshmi EX to see if I could get lucky even though I already had 99 Lakshmi/Susano totems. Well, the group cleared it 4 times and 2 mounts dropped but my 83 wasn't good enough. So they decided to do Susano and I say "sure, why not" and off we go. We clear Susano 5 times, I roll 48 on the second mount that dropped. About ready to leave before rolls finished because how could 48 win? I'm glad I stayed, because I did indeed win it. :)

Had the weirdest copperhell nm run yesterday.
So Im brd, casually waiting for lvling roulette to pop. I get an in-prog pop with 2min since start timer. I lol and accept. Upon seeing my party being already halfway to the first boss I send my thanks to Yoshi and run to meet my party in person. Here's the weird things started: mid-second pull healer leaves without word. We wtf and chill till another healer joins. After killing 1st boss we all go to the lift but our new healer seems to be afk in boss room. We call then wait for a bit, we still had item on roll so no kick. Turns out healer dc'ed. We've waited till he logged back, said wb, no answer, no movement. We waited for a minute or so more. Healer didnt seem to want to do anything so we sigh and kick. Soon enough we get 3rd healer and lol about uncontrollably. Rest goes well, 3rd time is a charm anyhow :D
It honestly felt like this run was cursed.

Let's have a positive post for once.

Yesterday I was in the best pug in a while. I was spamming Ala Mhigo for verity and I came across a tank that stated they were new. My guess is that at least one of the dps were new to the dungeon as well.
We get to the bosses, I explain the mechanics for each one, no one rushes in before I finish, we lol at the soul extracting mechanic of the second boss.
At the last boss everyone pitched in and we discussed the mechanics and how we can go about not wiping. There were 3 deaths and the dps was a bit lacking(noticed at the swords where I had to go all out to kill them in time), but we pulled through and cleared with no wipes.

Guys if you're reading, you were great, loved being a part of that run!

Had an Omega 1n party yesterday, should have been warned by the fact that invite was an in-progress 20 minutes in. Get in to find they're down both tanks (plus of course the dps I replaced.) Long story short, we did win once we got our tanks, but only after having to use healer lb3. Because neither healer could bother to aoe heal after charybdis. I mean really...

This started the way it always starts - queueing for Trial Roulette and getting RM in progress by 16 minutes.

I'm on WHM with an AST cohealer barely breaking 25k health, then I see the tanks. One is a WAR with 70k+ health, cool. The other is a PLD at 15.6k... What? Aren't there ilvl requirements?

Before I can say more than "hi guys, hows it going?" my cohealer says that his armor is broken from trying this multiple times and never clearing and that her previous cohealer wanted to kick him and when she couldn't get it passed she DC'd to get kicked herself. Apparently everyone still present was okay with trying to carry this guy.

I am pleasantly surprised; decent humans in DF? Who knew!?

I am fairly secure in my ability to solo heal this fight so I say sure I'll try. My cohealer seemed on the ball with her explaination and even if she doesn't have a ton of stats if she has a good reaction time and just doesn't die a lot we should be okay.

I was wrong. So wrong.

I have my triangle marker/hat on for new people to follow me and it's going okay because between provoke, Shirk, Ultimatum and a NIN boosting the PLD's aggro he is staying above me on the list but when we get to the other floor it all goes to hell. I am second on the list then the WAR dies by falling right before an Ahk Morn which destroys me then wipe.

I have a habit of checking out people's search info in my downtime and our DRG has two tanks at 70 and the other at 60... Hmmm... I ask him if he would throw on some Vit accessories and he seems to get the idea, we are making a new tank.

This actually works! Everyone had their explainations before we started, we had a bit of a mess during ad phase and I was scared we might wipe from not killing them fast enough but I couldn't stop healing but then my lovely coheal steps in with some Gravity while I'm keeping our 3 tanks up and we make it. The downstairs (upstairs?) is not bad either. There are times that I'm taking a few auto attacks and it's a slow ass run because the DRG is doing less damage and so am I. The PLD is dead a lot because he gets oneshotted but our BLM is manashifting us fairly regularly and at one point my cohealer throws me an enhanced Ewer which I have never had before.

Point is we did it. Suboptimal AF but we did it. Other than expressions of joy I think everyone at the end said something to the PLD about never entering something with broken gear again.

So yeah... Kinda a positive story? Happy ending at least.

@MoroMurasaki: Every successfully completed RM run is a happy story in my book :D

No, but seriously though. Lately I've had some very nice teams for this instance in particular (I'm trying to get the card).

Just yesterday, out of the three times I got in, all three were clears!
Granted, a big part of both teams were >ilvl 310 and that obviously makes things a lot simpler - but it can still be tricky with new members, so I'm kind of surprised at how many unbelievably nice people I've ran into?

Or maybe they're just average nice and I'm just too used to people taking a look at the instance and leaving right after - or sticking around being turds until they get kicked.

I swear, this place brings out either the best or worst in everyone that lands in there.

Still a fun fight, though!

EDIT: Okay, um.
RM related. Just got out of a run where my keyboard stopped working for some reason - I spent the whole run manually clicking all my healing spells (all run until 1%, because at that point we wiped). I couldn't get it to work and I panicked, so I jumped off and left... to find out I had two mice with conflicting keybinds connected, which probably caused the whole mess. To the team I just bailed on, I'm really, really sorry D:

Pretty close to levelling my WAR so I queue for MS. I get another WAR. I hit Defiance, he hits Defiance. We're Lv50 and don't have Deliverance. I start to pull and he fights me. So he wants to MT. I let him have it. He stops. Okay, so I grab the group from the other light. He runs over and tries to pull aggro again. Its like this for the rest of the run. Every time I start pulling, he tries to take it. On the bright side it was a little amusing to watch him go full ham against Lucia to no avail.

So, you'd think not much can happen in a guildhest since it only takes like 2 minutes but this just baffled me a little - I'm trying to finish the weekly thingie for my RDM and queued up for the morbol-guildhest (since thats giving me a bonus too). Its a level 31 guildhest, just as a reminder.

We load in and... nothing happens for a minute or so. Tank just stands there, healer turns on diurnal, but doesnt cast protect. Its a level 31 guildhest, we dont actually really need protect - and we certainly dont need to stand around waiting a minute til everyone figures that out.

I mean... its by no means a big deal but neither is protect. I left the time-stamps in because seriously the whole thing took 2 minutes - 2 minutes one can go without protect. I also sort of always believed that no one seriously types like that. Or rather hoped...

Finished my roulettes on MNK, so I queued for some of the higher dungeons. Healer d/c'd in the middle of the last boss fight, so we wipe. We decide to give the healer 5-8 minutes to log back in before we kick. The time comes and goes and I'm waiting to hit yes on the Vote Kick window when I'm suddenly kicked from the instance. It was probably a mistake, but I had waited an hour for that queue...

Just had a great leveling roulette on my MCH, I get Haukke Manor with a Whm/Nin/GLD, we all said hello and started pulling, right off the bat I notice the Whm is using 1 Cure every like 10 seconds while the GLD is dropping mad. We get to the 3rd pull in the hallway and the healer lets the tank die and then starts attacking them saying "you should be a PLD in Haukke Manor wtf man go do PotD".

I defended the GLD by saying well they're new and probably don't know what it is, we get into it and they start talking about how there's "rebalanced entounters?", to which I replied it's the same as it's always been just threat has been buffed aaannd they left which is fine since all they did was complain about the tank which I told em that most people walked in here before their jobs as it's level 28.

We continue on and have no issues, taught the nin some stuff about returning to the front entrance, the tank about running behind Void Fires/Lightnings to dodge them completely and everyone was grateful for the experience, walked away with 3 comms to felt great, I had a lot of fun if anyone from the group reads this you guys were awesome and i'd group with you any day! Love your friendly neighborhood Hyur <3

I was getting my weekly clears for Omega normal a few days ago. First run of V3 ended with a wipe due to reaching enrage. I honestly had no idea normal mode had an enrage timer.

He probably went in with broken gear. Someone like that certainly is not selfless enough to take the penalty to help 7 other people.

Some groups definitely do the direction the boss is facing as true north since it can help DPS with positionals.

I am of the opinion that it can be a little superfluous on Alte Roite (we just let the DPS with positionals hang out in the middle), but it does feel pretty helpful on Halicarnassus.

What is it with tanks who let the other tank pull, but then suddenly decide they want to tank? I did MSQ roulette and other tank goes into dps stance which, in my mind, is the universal symbol for "you go ahead other tank." So I go ahead and pull and do my thing etc etc all the way up to the first boss. Suddenly I'm fighting for aggro the rest of the dungeon.

Just say you want to tank now. That's all you have to do. Don't let the other tank tank and then decide you think you can do a better job without saying anything.

To be fair, in lvl50 dungeons I usually go OT cuz I always see the other tank (war/pld/drk) going ASAP MT, but when we start to fight me without voking the boss end up getting aggro and even after the other tank voke the boss.

Sometimes it happen. Better ilvl gears and the correct dps combo can work against the enmity of the other tank. May be they should consider to go OT if they think that can happen

Had a Stone Vigil run with three sprouts. We sadly died on the very first pull, but I noticed some things: healer was spamming Cure 2 and running out of mana, and tank wasn't exceptionally geared and not using cooldowns. After we rezzed, I offered some suggestions for both of them, and they both seemed extremely receptive to the advice I gave. Sure enough, while we had a couple of wipes on some of the harder pulls, everything pulled together, and by the end, the two were indistinguishable from any tank or healer at that level. It always feels good when you have a couple of new players who want to learn and improve. :)

You know, had a similar thing happen to me yesterday in O2. Me and the other tank load in, I give them a min to choose a stance, they don't so I go in Grit. They choose the WAR OT stance. About 3/4ths of the way though the fight, I'm suddenly fighting for aggro, and I see they put on their MT stance, and pull old tentacley towards the party just in time for all of them to be hit by the cleave. I try to grab back aggro, they're having none of it, so I just remove tank stance. Got better things to do than have a pissing match. Amazingly, when I removed my tank stance, they decided that no, they don't want to MT and put their OT stance back on.

Apparently according to some of my fc members, not the first time they've heard of other tanks doing that. Sad.

Not sure I have a bad story. if anything I'm someones bad story. This is the first time I've ever played XIV and MMO so I'm still new to a lot of things
Doing a dungeon,toto rak?, as tank and as my first time, taking my time and no idea where I'm going just forward which is right so far. I have a dps who decides to run off on their own and as he has been getting ahead of me a lot, i guess they have done it before so maybe I missed something, maybe they just followed the more confident player, Im now alone and got caught by some monsters. Dead.
The healer came running to aid and the other two DPS soon follow behind. Thing is, I was in the right place as once we beat the monsters we just carried on so it's not as if I took a wrong turn.
Probably my fault but as it's only my third dungeon, my perception of behind me isn't great as I get nervous I'm going to run into some monster or die if I look back, let the party down as they need me to tank.
I am new, I am learning lol

Clearly the Off Tanks fault that you can't hold hate/aggro in tank stance. So I don't think that he wanted to tank, but sadly you didn't give him/her a other choice if you can't keep the mobs together and glued to yourself. Now I could have understood, if he/she was switching tank/dps stance every 3 seconds and using provoke, because that's something that's not new in DF. Maybe you should consider playing OT right from the start, or tell the next off tank that you get, to not use any stance and go afk for the first 15 minutes.

Yesterday I had a more or less interesting run in Gubal NM.

To help a friend level her SAM to 60, I wanted to q as tank to shorten the waiting time. Since I already leveled my preffered tank class (PLD) to 70, but still wanted to take the chance of getting some easy exp, I decided to go as WAR...a class I haven't touched for ages,but never really had any problems with in the past.

So we get in very fast. I see that we have another Samurai as a dps, which I like because SAM dmg is usually pretty good, and an Healer (AST) with the same surname. So you know they belong together. 'Oh well, no problem, it's cute', I think since my friend and I share the same surname too and start pulling after gettin protes.

The first few pulls go very well for me. I'm kinda absorbed in my rotation at this point, but it goes nicely as I can stancedance to do some extra dmg while managing my cds. There seem to be no healing problems at all, but after a while I start noticing that things die at a very slow pace...even though my friend is dpsing her heart out. I find this kinda weird, but don't wanna mention it, until my friend tells me over discord that I should check the other SAMs gear...and oooooh boy....

They were wearing mainly lvl 50 gear. A few Garlond pieces , but mainly the stuff you get from the lvl 50 SAM quest when you unlock the job. On the right side there were some crafted lvl 50 accessories, and a freaking lvl 5 ring.

As things seem to go well at this point however, we keep it to ourselfes and after finally killing the first boss which seemed to take forever, as the healer didn't seem to know they can attack too to help out a bit but rather just stood anround or ran in circles if they had nothing to do, we move on downstairs. But again, I don't say anything because, you know...as long as they don't let me die and so on..

So then things start to get really annoying. The other SAM decides to take pulling into their own hands and just runs off. I'm a bit taken aback by this but follow. The first time, it works out. The second time, it doesn't. I take aggro immediatley, but the healer doesn't do anything to heal me up, instead doing the /cheer emote towards their friend. After we respawn I just have to say something and ask the SAM not to pull for me but let me do it, since big pulls are normally okay for me but not in the case when the dps is clearly lacking, to which they replie: 'Shut up I learn [teach] you how to tank'

...yeah...right. I'm just about to explain to them again why I don't think big pulls are a good idea in this case, when my friend informs me that they wanna kick me..
...and out I am. My friend leaves shortly after.

I play this game for almost two years now and have never been kicked before. I never imagined it to happen because of such a stupid reason. But oh well...I guess you just can't help it sometimes. :( My friend and I went in again and this time it was amazing, our heal and second dps were doing their very best and I could pull big without any worries, since the mobs just melted away :o I know I'm not the best WAR tank out there, and I am always ready to learn something new, but getting both commendations at the end of this run really felt good after the disaster before that. :o

I don't think primal seems particularly receptive to the idea of WT this morning after maintenance. Leviathan extreme, easy right? Wrong.

First party queues up synced. I back out. Wait 2 minutes to silence and no requeue so I leave party.
Second party, unsynced. This is good for WT. First time they activate the generator too early and everyone that isnt a tank dies. Second generator activation also done too early, tanks take 40k damage. Run cleared but I feel like I should just solo it (because I can, and quite easily if you have a level 70 class).

I am going to bed. Maybe partying won't be so bad if I sleep it off.

Nobody anywhere knows what to do in Leviathan/Ifrit/Ramuh EX when it's unsync. There is, 99% of the time, at least one wipe because people push too far without killing the adds/nails/spheres. It's gotten to the point where when we queue up I remind people to kill any adds ASAP, and if they don't we will wipe.

Until all our tanks and healers are leveled (so a while from now still) my boyfriend and I queue as tank/healer though we don't share the last name or indeed any resemblence to each other as he's a Roe.

A few times over the past year or so we've had a DPS who likes to pull for him and he's said something and gotten kicked. Whenever that happens I just surprise them by popping out as well, enjoy waiting for a tank and a healer guys!

I once had a level 70 RDM who was *brand new* to Sirensong Sea who ran away with that stack mark and refused to stack with the group when we had the stack mark.

For some reason, I did that too when I first played Sirensong Sea. To this day, I have no idea what crossed my mind to run away from the group when the stack marker came up on me. Needless to say I died, and got carried in that fight...

I was the healer.

Ok so I'm starting to get really mad at people and frustrated lol. I did Susan Normal on WHM with another WHM. All the other healer did was use Medica 2 every once and a while and that was it, no dots or anything just chilling. We wiped at sword phase because OT didn't do mechanic no biggie. Next time near the end of the fight, no one has died, I'm healing and making sure to aero and do a few stones when I can. "MoonFluff can you stop dpsing and focus on healing pls?"

"Uh what? No one is dying why..?"

No response. Okay I guess I should just sit there in fights and do nothing then but overheal. :/

No no, clearly they expected you to stand there and twiddle your thumbs and contribute nothing in between occasional medica II casts. :D

I'm learning WAR and make mistakes. I've been taken it slow and keeping my tank stance. Doing Bardam's, I was feeling adventurous, and I grabbed the birds and rock monsters. I mistimed some stuff and wiped. One of the DPS just leaves. There was no problems before that and I grabbed small after that. Finished pretty quickly too. Went back in and finished that run before that one DPS's penalty was up. So what was the point? If you leave at one wipe, when there were no problems before. You just took a thirty minute timeout, on top of your DPS queue times. Why? That's a huge waste of time. A lot more than the few seconds it takes to run back.

Oh that's rude. They think they're right and you are wrong, when results show obviously that their HP is in the healer's hands. I guess the best solution is to just follow for this one run to avoid fights. :/

You have all the rights to be less perceptive of the situation as you're still a beginner. Those DPS running amok on their own is showing a bad example. This shouldn't happen. Thing is, In Toto-rak ONLY, the dungeon has multiple paths which turned out to be a bad design. On my first run there, I am just as confused as you are... if I were the DPS, I would always beckon to the newbie to guide him / her through the right path. I recommend asking in the Novice Channel for help. :)

I can't believe your healer was using just Medica 2, jeeeeze... if they comfortable healing in there and doing nowt else, that's flippin' lazy.

I finally went into Susano normal after three weeks of not healing in dungeons lol, was a bit rough. My fellow co-healer might have been a first timer too, she was an AST, the only quibble was I wish she'd thrown a bole or two on the tanks during Stormsplitter, not necessary though. Only cos they were squishy :/ DPS were dying everywhere, me and her must have raised about several thousand times :p We beat the blighter though, I was surprised I got four comms and I'm hoping she got the other four :D

Edited to add: Shisui of the Violet Tides, level 60 tank doing mass pulls, barely keeping them alive... and complaining when people aren't rolling on drops, because they were in a cutscene :) Aaaah lovely DF, such wonderful people :D

I was doing roulette expert now as bard and a ninja started to complain about I was not using Quick Nock. Well, particularly prefer to put dot in each one of enemies and to use Rain of Death when available. As I foresaw that I was going to be kicked of instance, only said Sorry and leaves by own wish.

Me two years ago: Oh, Shikuchi doesn't make you immune to ground AoEs.
Me five minutes ago: Wonder if I can Onslaught through this minefield?

Ok I'm glad I'm not going crazy. It helps me to type it out here so I'm less stressed about it, because for some reason these thing stress me out a lot. :S

You handled the confrontation with another player well, if you knew a vote kick was going to happen.

The pull, though, not so much :/

Putting up dots on every single target in big pulls takes a LONG time (you mentioned expert so I'm just assuming tank was doing mega pulls), it's inefficient as they'll wear off targets by the time you get back to them, and prolonging mob lifespan takes heavy tolls on everyone else:

The tank, who's going to run out of cooldowns/TP/MP/HP fast
The healer, who will likely run out of MP fast and thus won't be able to do much healing nor DPSing
Your co-dps - as a ninja they'll be spamming high TP cost aoe skills, and will run out of TP fast

Well, I always played this way and does not seem to interfere too much. For example, doing Lost Canals of Uznair with 2 friends and we finish last week. Was warrior, white mage and me as bard (only 1 dps in party). And I always use Tactician and Refresh for help MP/TP of party members, besides Palisade and Nature's Minne on tank :/

Funny thing about that. You can Onslaught through Black Holes in both Normal and Savage, provided you clip all the way through. Our WAR tried it for giggles. The game thinks you're still at your starting spot until you connect with the target. It's rarely ever worth doing but no less ridiculous.
