Live hyurs probably... That thing looks menacing.
Iff hummer comes back with a result from his 80 berry binge we'll truly know if there's some sort of cap or not. So far from what's posted, feeding 20 berries nets a raptor blue, 30 berries+ 10 pears nets an othard blue. So the 'new feathers' being a cap may not be true, since this probably goes beyond that. But if it is then these amounts could of been halfed for the same effect.
Got exactly what I wanted first try, a Slate Grey choco ^.^

Not sharing what I did to get it though :P
Jkjk, I fed 21 O'ghomo berries (darken blue), 7 Xelpatol Apples (darken red), and 7 mamook green things (darken green). Only a couple darker shades of grey/black available, I'd assume adding a couple more of each would give you charcoal grey, then a couple more of each on top of that for soot black?
Edit: Fixed image link
1 Pear
25 Apples
2 Plums

As we are now learning, your bird was probably only affected by ONE food, the question is, which one, and how many? And the terminology is "deepen" not darken. Still not certain exactly what that means.... that's why we're posting here.
I'm all for single food experimentation and stopping at the "new feathers" announcement, so we can know the real deal here.
So, after wanting to end my life after my berries not taking any effect, I decided to try out the 6 hour window and see what I could do.
I fed an initial 3 berries and waited 3 hours (I took a nap) and now I fed him 27 more berries and 10 pears to get Orthard Blue (fingers crossed).
If the color is correct after this, that means that you can effectively add more fruit any time in the 6 hours window and still get the intended result, however, I failed to try and alter the ordering of the final fruit to see if it had any effect.
