Honestly the worst part about this expansion for me is how I want to get invested. I want to see this new continent, how different its people are compared to Eorzea and the east. I want to see Erenville and especially Krile get some much needed attention they didn’t get throughout the rest of the games story.
I WANT to care.

But holy crap, Wuk Lamak, and the entire framework of the story around her is like being promised a well made medium rare steak. Something that looks like it’ll be great to sink your teeth into and enjoy And being given a literal raw slab of lamb instead.
For the entire expansion, my entire week was spent on this, and it’s just not good until you finally reach a dungeon. Which ends after 20-30 minutes anyway. And it’s like that for the entire expansion, and I’m not even at the last area, which is still gonna be more of the same anyway

At least the Bakool Ja Ja memes have been the best (and only) good thing to come off of Twitter

I'm seeing that square enix is trying really hard to hide their association with sweet baby inc. several threads mentioning it have been deleted. I don't care about politics, I just know that a company that sacrifices games to push their politics is bad.
People thought wuk lamat's voice was bad before it came out the VA is trans and I don't care about that either. I care about a good performance and wuk lamat sounds uncanny.
Maybe they outsourced some localization or english voicing to sweet baby and they hired wuk's VA based on politics and not skill.

Wuk wasn't the only reason the writing wasn't great.

Are people really using this valid discussion about the problems with a character to try and latch this to some fake outrage campaign that has nothing to do with this one character stealing the thunder of others? Grifters are the worst

Souls are established to just be aether like just about everything else in the setting. Functionally speaking, sucking the soul out of some random dude off the street is no different than eating a tainted apple. We know this for sure from the previous storyline.
By removing the memories from the soul all you've done is decontaminate the aether, allowing it to sustain any memory without the schizophrenic side effect.

When that company has a consistent track record of being linked to companies that write absolutely dog water stories, it's not exactly a fake outrage campaign to go "Is this yet another case of this happening?" A quick Google search would come up with several examples of how scummy these people are. And when your expansion's MC VA ALSO spouts the same absolutely abhorrent stuff on Twitter as they are, this goes beyond conspiracy to "What the actual hell are they doing over at SE?"

Like, let's be completely honest here. Nobody would give two craps if the story was good. But it's not. So people are going to go looking for reasons why. And since the company isn't going to say "Yeah... We hired people that are just bad at their jobs.", we have to go looking for underlying reasons... And there are massive red flags this expansion, that even if not true, have a lot of people going "Hmmmmmmmm."

In the very beginning, I quite liked WL.
Now that I have finished MSQ, I couldn’t stand her anymore.

I’m ok to not be the main character, that’s not the problem. The problem is she gets to do everything we usually do, and I’m referring mostly to world interactions and interactions with the scions too.

What it’s not us who Y’Shtola is calling by Linkpearl, but WL ? Come on girl, we suppose to be close after all these years!

And why, after a big Krile and, later, Erenville moment, do I have to “speak to Wuk Lamat” just for her to be the one to adress them about how they are feeling?

That’s disheartening to me.

I’m playing since 2016 so, even if I’m sometimes kind of fed up with the scions, they are supposed to be my close people in Eorzea, since WoL apparently doesn’t have a family.

Geezus, the things people get mad about. Wuk Lamat is fine. She's like 90% of every other character in FF14. I started the expansion very meh about the story. Interest piqued halfway. Went back to meh briefly, then was piqued again for the remainder. Which, if I'm being brutally honest, is similar to just about every previous expansion (Shadowbringers might be the only one that was interesting throughout most of it).

Is it dumb that we, the WoL, stand by and let various people die? Sure. But, it's hardly the first time. It's a fictional story in a video game. It's never been particularly sensible, and it just feels like nothing can simply be enjoyed on the internet any longer. Everything has to be dissected into problems because outrage is what gets clicks.

As far as the voice acting, it's hard not to think there's an undertone of racism involved, as it's easy to imagine if Wuk-Lamat had a European accent, all that outrage would vanish. Personally, I'm not blind to my own biases. I don't generally associate positive vibes to South American accents. But, the VA is good, my own prejudices over the accent aside.

Anyway, I never post. But, it just feels like everything everywhere is torn down through concerted fake outrage (that's so far down its own butthole that its essentially transformed into real outrage), and maybe normal people need to start speaking up so creators don't feel like the entire world has gone down the outrage vortex.

This is first time hearing this, are you saying the accent isn't fake? The VA isn't north american? Where does this racism come from? Literally first time I've heard ANYONE have this take, I can see your mentioned bias for sure. One of the most common complaints are that she DROPS the accent sometimes by accident.

Almost every negative review on almost all sites cites Wuk Lamat as the reason for that. I think that should at least tell that there might me a point in all that.
At least others here give some kind of reason why they like the story.

In a sea of criticisms from both sides spanning over 100 pages, this has got to be the worst take imaginable regardless of where your opinion falls on Wuk Lamat and Dawntrail's MSQ on the whole.

You cannot seriously be attempting to argue (poorly) that criticism towards the English VA is tantamount to racism? I guess we're simply not allowed to critique her performance whatsoever because, what? Hurt feelings? Putting aside the complete absurdity of such an argument, the character aspect is immediately refuted by the fact JP is equally critical of her. Could it possibly be she's an extremely divisive character a sizable portion of the fanbase simply doesn't like for no other reason than what they're voicing and not this ridiculous assumption? Nah. It's racism, guys.

One of the traits of woke entertainment is to swap out the main character for another so you can get people to watch your content without selling it. That is what happened here. Another symptom is DEI hiring that replaces talented hires, which also happened here. It's just symptoms of wokeness which we know Square has decided to explore.

I'm afraid to criticize the VA because people will start bringing other Kaiba trap cards unrelated to it to send me back to the shadow realm. But the VA does sound underwhelming compared to other characters VA *(mainly the scions). However I'd also say that it's not down to the VA themselves. How a character should sound, the accent, and how expressive they need be is down to the producers too. Most of the time the VAs are only given certain characteristics of how the character should sound and take it from there. So the producers need to decide what is acceptable to be in production. So it's a 50:50 situation. Having said that DT is the first expansion where I play with JP voice on and I don't think I'd go back now. Y'shtola sounds so good, I also prefer JP Erenville voice. I'd miss Urianger EN accent though. I was blessed to have witnessed a masterpiece of EN voice acting that is Urianger.

They want you to be afraid, that's what makes it so much more important to criticize before the momentum picks up and this game falls to complete woke ruin like so many other games and movies. If people think this is the end, it isn't. It will only get worse if we are silent.

Yes, the story is rough and Wuk Lamat the main issue behind all of it. I played with JP dub and even then it was a travesty. But guess what, Wuk Lamat's ENG voice actor was clearly miscast and made an already bad story even worse by having to hear a really bad voice performance throughout most of it. You can point fingers and try to shift the blame towards the voice cast director of whomever, but the performance was bad, and people took notice, and they also started wondering how such a subpar performance was allowed to happen in a game that often gets praised for it's amazing voice acting post-ARR.

The EN script changes a lot of nuances in the story. Has been the case since A Realm Reborn. It's the only localization that does it too, FR and DE are about as faithful to the japanese script as you can get. Furthermore the voice actors/actresses are not selected by SE of Japan. Each region has its own studio in charge of head hunting them.

Most of those changes affect lore, not the storyline.

The EN localization department and any other culture war scapegoats that people are throwing out are not the reason Wuk Lamat is written as an annoying teenage girl, not the reason the story repeats the same "we need to understand everyone!" moralizing a million times in the MSQ, not the reason Wuk Lamat got infinite screentime at the expense of everyone else, not the reason the story is written for 4 year olds who can't handle any stress,

Yoshi P himself said they wanted something lighthearted because the IRL world is on fire. Supposedly to them light-hearted = depth at the level of a half-dried shallow pool in the desert and light-hearted = resort to using shonen and slice of life anime tropes that only hikikomoris and 4 year olds enjoy.

So finally beat MSQ this afternoon and at least there was one momentary positive thing that happened. After winning the final trial I got one dialog choice finally that let me call BS on literally the entire last zone, the last dungeon, and the last trial by calling out the "big bad" for what they were. A pre programmed AI with it's hard coded decision making process based on a dead person that had no more agency in the story than I did.
